  1. We have better players now, no doubt. It will take some time to work them all in together. The issue isn't this year, it was last year when they had a miracle season and won 11 games while being outscored. These things tend to even out hence the idea that they will be better than last year but the record won't be close to as good. I happen to agree with all of that.

I think the Colts are like a professional card player who has a better hand than last year when he won the pot (playoffs) on a bluff....but i honestly think Luck is a generational player that doesn't come along that often and I think the quality that will make him so special in the long run, compared to those that right now who look like his peers, is that most QB's have incremental improvement but Luck is going to demonstrate exponential growth and his end point will far outdistance his current peers. In other words, the Colts are the card player holding the Joker and they know it.

  2. We have better players than last year and we will not take a step back, we will be a better team at season's end than we were last year. I've yet to hear one expert say we have less talent this year than last. We are upgraded in so many areas. The experts always give some vague/lame reason as to why we will fall back (no chuck strong momentum, they lost Arians,  soph. slump for Andrew, harder schedule, etc). Expert "well, I just think they'll have a hard time matching last year's win total"..then tell me where they are a less talented team that will cause the fall down! Is it  0-line...no, D-line...no, receivers....no, Safeties....ha ha ha ha stop you're killing me..you get my meaning.

  3. I watched all 4 Raider pre season games start to finish. Keep Pryor in the pocket, keep a QB spy on every down, drop into coverages, mix the coverages, make him beat you with his arm he cannot make accurate throw after throw for a sustained drive....do that and he has no chance. Let Pryor play Ben Rothisberger and run for first downs and complete passes off broken plays and he's much more dangerous. The opposite is true with Flynn if he plays heavy pas rush on every play he is extremely immobile and was sacked over and over in the preseason (he will literally fall down or dump it short if he senses any pressure) and he does not have the arm strength to throw deep.

  4. There is no magic to the 3-4 but when we played the 4-3 we had the same look every down, 2 edge rushers with a hand down every down, LB's in very predictable spots for blocking and the balance of the formation makes blocking patterns more predictable. More than that we played 4-3 Tampa 2 so much of the time also very predictable and the MLB has to cover very deep in the middle of the field in obvious passing downs when in zone. It's not the alignment of the 3-4 that is superior but  its as much the fact that it emphasizes bigger d line men, a changing front look with more overload blitzes, player assignments that are more interchangeable, a stop the run with bigger bodies philosophy, a nose tackle big as a house who's job is not to be moved, and as already mention it can easily morph into a 4-3 at any time. Its the flexibility of the defense that offers some advantage.

  5. After viewing Peerman's 22 yd run on NFL.com it looked like Rayford and Harvey did an excellent job shutting down the right side of the defense. Guy and Werner took bad angles and were run around. By cheating inside Werner also left himself open to a crackback block. Butler's missed tackle also did not help. To me Matthwes seems slightly ahead of Guy in the evaluation process. Werner is a good athlete but a work in the process. Looks like Rayford has actually outplayed Werner this preseason and could make the roster as the 4th OLB. Next couple of days will tell.

Rayford will never be as good all around as Werner (he doesn't change direction that well but compensates with his long wingspan) but when they both become used to the system Werner will be better. Right now Rayford's a little ahead of Werner because his good plays are difference makers. You can see already that everybody is always going to go at those super long legs of his when blocking.

  6. Depth is a problem when we have a serious injury that will sideline one of our first 3.....it would be an extreme problem if we had 2/3 down or were down 1 and lost another during a game. I guess if we got to that point in an emergency I would favor moving a Fleener into the slot or outside spot or a running back on a temporary basis. The Colts shifted Lenny Moore from running back to receiver for a whole season and used him alternately at both positions in some seasons. Practice squad receivers and other teams 4's and 5"s are not usually very good ( think Hank Basket....). Every team is a little thin someplace but then I also have a very high opinion of Whalen.
