  1. I'm very serious! We were on at least the 30 yard line about 3 times today, and came up with no points. The drive did not stop due to sacks. They stopped due to drops

the one avery dropped was terrible, but the others were in tight coverage or a little off target. luck's passes were rushed into tight coverage or off target because of the continuous quick pressure he was getting. watch other games yesterday and today, those qb's had time to scan the field and step into throws. luck has to step around and throw over linemen, sometimes while leaning backwards.

  2. I think it is unfair to grade Castonzo unless taking in all factors.  Luck, I believe, threw the 4th most passes in the NFL.  Luck also runs around a lot and holds the ball a lone time.  If Peyton Manning was the QB getting the ball off in 2 seconds, Castonzo would be a Pro Bowl tackle.  I think he is good. We need shorter routes and better guards.

    i couldn't disagree more.

luck doesn't run around a lot, he moves in the pocket to avoid rushers like the top qb's do. so luck should get destroyed until he is able to make reads as quick as manning? your reasoning would mean that just about every team has an pro bowl lt, all they need is pm as their qb.

  3. we have nothing at rt, and ac is not a good lt. he wiffs far too often with speed rushers. i was hoping to see improvement by now, but i just don't think he is capable of being a good lt. move him to the right side and hopefully get a good lt somewhere. the most important thing is to keep luck healthy for 10-15 years, and that won't happen the way things are now.

  4. Guard play and LT play when Justice is out has been poor. Curious to see if  ijalana will be a good guard he looked ok at tackle last year but could be better at guard

    2. SS - Don't have any quality starters that can make this defense special.  Betha is getting old but should be ok for a year or two  but that's it

    3. OLB - did ok today but setting the edge has been the problem with this team all year and that is the responsibility of the OLB in the 3-4

    4. CB - Davis is good, curious to see if butler or powers could step up next year.  but if other issues are addressed a corner would be nice

    5. DE - Redding is solid and looked like Moala and Nevis were playing well before they went down for the year.  So not a priority

    6. WR - Hade too many drops today.  Overall good young group and if whelan can play in a real game like he did in pre-season we might have even a better group... great hands seems to catch everything.

Don't need a NT.  Johnson has played well and with Chapman as a young stud and McKinney who played well before his trip to the IR we should only look at this if something falls in our lap we can't pass on.

i agree, and welcome to the forum.

  5. we should take it easy on the cb's, they aren't that bad. top safeties should have been there to intercept those high hanging passes today. ed reed would have had a field day with passes like that. fans have been screaming to play more press coverage, but you have to have capable safeties to take away the deep passes. the colts don't. also, sometimes top wr's make great plays.

  6. 1.) OG - Our interior is the worst in the NFL in pass protection IMO.

2.) RT - Justice is inconsistent and we have no one behind him.

3.) OLB - Freeney simply doesnt fit this defense. He is still horrible against the run and doesnt get the pressure he used to.

6.) S - Zibs isnt very good and Joe is a backup.

7.) WR - Just not a fan of Avery personally. He has inconsistent hands and is generally a soft player. I love Hilton for the future but we dont have alot behind Hilton and Wayne and Wayne is getting up there.

both ot's are big pass protection problems.

    i completely agree about freeney!

    i completely agree about zibs!

i agree about the wr's, but they are pretty easy to find. i wouldn't spend much money or top picks on this.

  7. I want to say offensive line, but fixing the defense isn't far off. It might even be ahead of the offensive line.

You look at all of our losses, Hou, New England, Jets, Jaguars, Chicago, Baltimore

How many of those losses was truly due to the Offensive line? Can you really point to the OL and say "That is the main reason for the loss"? Defense got gashed in the second half of the Houston game, gashed and burned against Chicago, burned against New England, Gashed against the Jets, and burned at times, Burned on the last play of the game against the Jaguars and gave up 100 plus yards to Jones Drew, Gashed and Burned today against the Ravens.

If we had a decent to very good defense this season, even with the O Line problems do you think we would have lost 6 games?

I don't think we would have at all. I'm not saying we shouldn't do anything about the O line, but the defense to me is almost hands down the higher priority.

the o-line is more important because that is protecting the most valuable part of the team. without luck, the colts are cleveland.

  8. i started on the indy star forum (i can't remember how long ago) and hated every change. losing past posts (it's like wiping out your entire history), having to get used to a new site, and some posters that you have gotten to know going to other forums or just getting frustrated and quitting is a huge negative to me and i am sure others. hopefully the people in control get this and keep the same site with just minor changes to enhance the site.

  9. Makes me wonder if some team is going to pay a #1 pick to San Francisco for Alex Smith.

And, of course, if more than one team is interested,  it could turn into a bidding war!     Hello!

And the rich would keep getting richer!     That's how you play the game.....

p.s. -- not saying Smith would be worth that....   but some team sure might considering how weak this draft class of QB's is now viewed....   Law of Supply and Demand and all that....

smith and all the qb's available have shown that they are terrible on bad teams and you would have to pay them big salaries. some teams might take a flier on one or two of them with a late round pick. it's much cheaper to take a shot on a college qb late 1st, 2nd, or 3rd.

  10. i like Baker Steinkuhler(sp?) as well

i don't. he only looked ok when jared crick was playing next to him. i didn't think crick was as good as people were saying for the same reason, he was much better playing next to suh. as a colts fan i was hoping suh came out as a junior and the colts could get him late in the 1st, as a husker fan i wanted him to stay. he was by far the most dominant defensive lineman i have ever seen in college football!

  11. Today my big TV broke.  Bad.  Blew a bunch of capacitors on the main board.

But don't worry, it's happened before.  Feb 3, 2007.  The day before SB XLI.  Which we won.

And this shall be a sign unto you.

i was excited, then disappointed when i opened the thread. i thought you were announcing you were putting your old site back up. i miss it!

  12. I think you are going to see a draft like two years ago, when so many quarterback needy teams tooks quarterbacks in the first round who should not have gone first round. Cam Newton, Jake Locker, Blaine Gabbert and Ponder, all in the first 12 picks. The only justified pick was Cam Newton.

In this draft, due to all the QB needs, we are going to see the same thing I expect. As Brian Billick says "need is a terrible talent evaluator", but it usually wins out when teams are desperate. Geno Smith and Matt Barkley will definitely go first round. I would not be surpirsed to see Mike Glennon, Tyler Bray and and Tyler Hanson all go in the first round. Need trumps a lot of things, and teams without qb's want to give fans hope many times. It is not the right move usually, but it is the NFL way it seems. Once the combine is over we will have a much better idea, but if anything, I would expect many of those names to move up the board after the combine as teams convince themselves they are players who can help their teams.

it could work out great for the colts if teams want these qb's late in the 1st round and trade up with the colts to get the one they want, giving the colts extra picks.

  13. i just want to say i have been a huskers football fan since 1971. burkhead is the only player on the team that i really like in the nfl this draft. i really like their wr's feel they would be great late round picks, but they are underclassmen. i feel bad for them because they have an absolutely terrible qb throwing the ball (despite what tv announcers say during games) and i am sure it will be the same next year. they could be nice late round finds in future years. i was hoping the colts would draft lavonte david (i REALLY liked him and he is the 8th leading tackler in the nfl), and in later rounds safeties eric hagg and dejon gomes (both on nfl teams and a position the colts need help at along with special teams).

  14. Good stuff from my guy Gary Brackett.....I've always felt we stopped the run better against power O's than the cut-back O's like Houston. Glad to see he's still staying in Indy, and I'd love for him to be some sort of LB coach here.

'As many times as we tried to rest guys, to prepare for playoff teams, that works occasionally.'

    ^^^Truth

i would like to see him in the media in some way. i love to hear the opinions of most ex players (not the ones that just talk to talk), scouts, and coaches, rather than the opinions of someone that never played and just went to journalism school.

  15. from the Indy Star...1-3-13

    GARY BRACKETT

On what the Colts' defense needs to do to win.....

“Attack (Ravens quarterback) Joe Flacco. When you’re not a mobile quartberback, you don’t have the chance for double moves. How many times have you seen (this season) where (Colts cornerbacks) Darius (Butler) or Vontae (Davis) jumps a route? It’s a pass defended, or they get a hand on it, or they take it the other way. With Flacco, he’s looking at you, he doesn’t have time for that guy to beat you. It’s a three-step drop. If you’re a cornerback, you’re told to play aggressive. Give yourself a chance to make a play. Be special. You have guys behind you, why not play that guy tight?

On the Colts' success against the Ravens while he played

“Our thing with Baltimore was, when their defense was a top-five defense, it was, ‘Hey defense, give us some time. Let us figure out what they’re doing defensively, then once we get it, we’ll win. That’s why you saw that 15-6 game in the (2006) playoffs. Just five field goals. You have those games, like the 20-3 game (in the 2009 playoffs). Baltimore is not a team you’re going to beat up. It’s an ugly game but if you stop their run, you’ll win.

“We’ve always been good against power-(offense) teams. What we’ve always struggled with was teams that can move the ball. Those zone reaches, where those running backs and linemen are moving, they’re cutting guys, and that running back finds a seam and cuts back against the grain, that’s what our defense struggled on.

“And that’s what (the Colts) still struggle on even being in a 3-4. In the past, Baltimore did the power-(offense). They just said: ‘We’re gonna run at ‘em. And we dominated them. When you don’t have a plan B – like Pittsburgh, when they beat us in ’05, they had a plan B. They threw the football. We were not prepared for them to throw the football. Our defense was predicated on them running the football. So when they threw it, we were kind of scrambling a bit. (Former Colts safety) Mike Doss was kind of caught up in a run-game mode and a couple of times they ran past him on pass plays.

“Baltimore has a coach, (Jim) Caldwell, who knows this better than anyone. He watched the Colts’ defense for years. It might not be the same scheme, but it’s the same personnel. He knows players’ weaknesses. He knows where Dwight Freeney is vulnerable. (Freeney) is so astute as a pash rusher, if you give him a pass set, and it’s a run, he’s probably going to just go into pass-rushing mode. Those are some of the nuances you might see in this week’s game just because the knowledge that Caldwell has of the personnel still here in Indy.”

    On the importance of film.......

“My last couple of years, I was guilty of losing a few steps. But I was a good player because I could bring other players along. A (former Colts linebacker) Clint Session, who was still fast, strong, physical, I could teach him what I’m seeing. I could tell him, ‘Don’t take those false steps because that’s a false run read. Even (current Colts linebacker) Pat (Angerer). Just use his No. 1 strengths. This is how you approach the game, this is how you should play the game.”

    On playoff momentum..........

“I think the playoffs are all about momentum. What team is coming in on what streak, who’s hot, who’s not. As many times as we tried to rest guys, to prepare for playoff teams, that works occasionally. But Indianapolis is coming in hot. Beating a good Houston team, playing their all-around game of the season. I think it’s going to be an emotional ballgame. I would go with the Colts this weekend. We can put up points. Our offense in the red zone, we can score with a lot of teams. It’s just a matter of our defense holding up and having a game plan together. I like (the Colts to win). I think it’s somewhere in the neighborhood of 24-17.

    great article!!!

i give a lot of credit to him for not holding back on his observations of colts players and coaches weaknesses and mistakes, even himself. i would love to hear more from him.

everything he said backs what i have been saying for a long time. freeney is only a pass rusher (not deserving the money he is getting), brecket lost a few steps (not deserving the money he was given in his last contract), and dungy not being a great coach.

  16. Depending on what we do with Brown and Carter, RB might not be a position of need.  Burkhead is also considered one of the better RB prospects, so he would take a higher round pick.  I'd rather see us spend that high round pick on a position like OL

he isn't rated that high, probably around the 5th round. i really like him, but he is a gamble with the injuries he's had although they haven't been serious. i would definitely take a chance on him with a late pick!

  17. I guess I would agree that given a choice I would rather build thru the draft. However, given the circumstances of today, we have a ton of  money to spend and a ton of holes to fill. In this case you do it with both the draft and FA. Grigson hopefully will get it done.

i am sure there have been some (i can't think of any), but signing high dollar free agents rarely improves teams. they are usually older,  that isn't a good thing in the nfl, and if they don't work out the team is screwed on the cap for a couple years.

  18. I see a bit of a contradiction in this post, and I'm trying to understand the perspective - so forgive me.  So on the one hand you have issues with resigning existing players, and then close with it's very hard to draft in the late 20s and replace impact players.  This is the exact point to me - a GM has to balance those exact things.  It would be hard to deny both truths regarding a player like Sanders.  He had as large an impact on a game as any defensive player the Colts have had in years.  And, he had a history of injury.  In hindsight it is easy to say he didn't "earn" his last contract.  But no player is paid for future success, they are paid on past results with hopes of continued similar or improved results.  Anyway, if you dislked the signing of existing players, and also don't expect much draft success at later parts of rounds, then what is the solution?

the problem is overpaying players that can be replaced with comparable players like happened with all the players i mentioned. the colts have done a good job of drafting comparable replacement players for most positions. the draft comment was regarding fans that think every 1st round pick should be a pro bowl player and later picks should be starters just because a starter was picked after their team selected (always after the fact). sanders was injury prone before he got that big contract, so i would have never given him that kind of contract.
