  1. Because he not only possesses elite stats but he also passes the eye test and any other test you throw at him... You're arguing that he is not a 1st tier OLB, and i'm asking you why? Everything points to him having already become one. He is with no question our "guy" and out Leader. I honestly don't even know what you're arguing with since Mathis is playing better for his position as a rush 3-4 OLB than everyone not named Justin Houston.

You're basically taking a SMALL sample size and using it to prove your argument which is unfair. I know the stats, but are you gonna really line Mathis up next guys like ware and say he is better than them?

He's not 1st tier(yet) because he hasn't become a disruptive force against the run. When he starts smash ball carriers consistently in the backfield, when we can put him on a tight end and not worry, then he'll be that known force.

  2. He is the guy. He is tied for the lead in sacks with 7,5. He may not get the attention of some other because he don't feel the need to over celebrate very time he makes a play.

Just think it's premature. If he keeps it up then yes, he will be.

  3. His production/stats was his opposing qb ratings, targets & completions. He was a "shutdown" corner, hence he "shutdown" his man... 2 completely different positions which use different stats and "eye tests" to measure effectiveness.

You just said it yourself, it's more to it than just stats.  So why use just sacks to gauge Mathis' elite status?  That's the point we're trying to make.

  4. I love Mathis, I just called dude a trendsetter and future HOFer in another thread.  But when he becomes an ELITE threat against the run AND pass, then he'll be THAT/OUR guy.

Oh, and when I say pass, I don't mean solely sacks, I mean able to drop back and keep up with a TE.

Right now, he is very good, not yet elite, but if he continues to dominate the pass rush and starts to cause havoc against the run, his name will be spoken in elite circles soon.

  5. In this league production speaks volumes more than reputation. If you don't believe that than it shows your distinct lack of football knowledge.

Huh!?  So you're telling me, while Asuogmha (sp?)was out OAK, he was not considered the 2nd best DB to Revis just because his stats didn't say so?  Please, not hearing about him says something about his production.  Production =/= Numbers

  6. he is tied for 1st in most sacks after 4 games and Suggs and Ware are tied for 7th.. Allen is tied for 9th .. watt and wake are not in the Top 10... I know it is early, but Mathis and the rest of the D is getting better every week.  So He Is our GUY.

I love how our D is playing and I agree... without Prior we would be a Top 5 on the Run D/ rushing per game

Sacks solely doesn't make a OLB/DE elite.  That's actually saying he's one-dimensional, which he is not, but according to your argument a OLB/DE's sole purpose is to get sacks and that is not so.  If Pag wanted that, then Dwight would have been signed.

  7. Because there's a difference between being just a pass rusher and being great at your position. Mathis is confirmed to be good at pass rushing, especially against bad pass pro. O-Lines, but that's about it this season.

Don't confuse that for being a great OLB, there is far more to it than pass rushing, and being only good at that makes you one dimensional, and actually a mediocre 3-4 OLB.

    This.

  8. Mathis is that guy

He is BECOMING that guy.  I love Mathis just as much as anyone, but when I think of that 1st tier of OLB/DE, I think Suggs, Watt, Wake, Ware, Allen first.  Mathis is 2nd tier to me, not saying he isn't good, but you know what I mean.  But if he continues on his tear, no doubt he will be that leader on defense and around the league.

  9. Depth.

Green Bay had 16 guys making $1M or more when they won the SB. And they lost a bunch of players to injury that season.

As I recall we had 9 when we won and our tenth highest paid was our long snapper.

Forever thankful our D & running game got hot, and thanks for R Grossman too. ;-)

Once Bob came back, I knew our defense would look different, but man I did not expect that!  I still remember jumping and busting my behind when Bob made that game-making tackle against the Pats.  I was so mad because it was 4th and 1 and we were playing off.  I'm screaming at the TV like "wth is going on?  How don't they know it's gonna be something short.".  Next thing I know Brady throws a checkdown and I'm like game over, but then here comes Bob crashing down and he hit him so hard, dude couldn't even gather any forward momentum to get across the sticks!

Sorry for the trip but yeah, we have a TEAM.  Can't wait for Landry to play this week and knock some beast out of Lynch.

  10. You know what impresses me the most, that we don't have that 'player' but we are still very good on defense.

Ya know, the ravens have Suggs and ngata, texans have Cushing and watt, cowboys have ware.

But who do we have? Who on this team that we have when you say there name you say to yourself "that's our guy! That's a guy known around the league for being vicious." Don't get me wrong, we have good players but do we have that guy? That speaks wonders, we have a good collection of players, adding that guy will propel us.

  11. While the odds are certainly against him getting in, what Hall of Fame voters and fans in general should realize is that this is the first time Mathis has played in a defense that best fits him.

And not to only mention, this dude came from an HBCU.  Nothing against them, but it's not often you hear players from HBCU's tearing it up in the NFL.  Robert is a trend-setter and I see no reason why he and Dwight shouldn't be in the HOF one day.

Robert is having a great year and moving him on the defense is looking to be a brilliant and cost-efficient move by Pag and the front office.  Bravo.

  12. Can't blame Joe for getting paid 120 million, blame Ozzie.

But yeah, Flacco looking weak without Boldin and a defense that gave him the ball.  Defense for the Ravens stepped it up in the 2nd half, but Flacco failed to.

  13. 360 :D  Just got my hands on it. Don't think I'll ever pick up IV again!! I am blown away after one day of playing!

Bradford puts up good numbers too with the small things he has, that's what is impressive. If it's Alex Smith or RGIII, people act like they are the next Moon and Aikman, but if Bradford has one bad game against a top tier team, he's "overrated".

Ahhh 360 smh.  I'm PS3.  But yeah, the game is amazing and the online hasn't even come out yet.

  14. Yep. They look like the Alex Smith niners. They will not make it back to the SB this year. Both Seattle and Chicago are better then them and probably the Saints too depending if their D holds up.

I'm not a believer in Chicago yet.  They do this every year, start strong and then fizz out.  I do believe Seattle is better, especially when Percy Harvin comes back.  Saints are definitely going to contend but I see them on the same level as SF, that's a wash to me.  But I do agree, them going back to the SB is looking harder than what it looked like before the season started.

  15. This is what I expect to happen.  Jacoby got a little to hands on and the girl probably rejected his advanced and he became disrespectful and then took a bottle upside his head.  Always one guy at the club or at a big party that might get a little to hands on with a girl and Jacoby was probably that guy that night.

This is not that big of a deal.  Only reason we are talking about it is because the cops were called.

Yeah, it's not really a big deal.  But ever since the "Party Boat" incident, a lot of things have been magnified. lol

  16. Thoughts on game:  9ers are going back to traditional football.  Really didn't see any trick plays or Pistol formations, just straight up line-up and punch em in the mouth football.

  17. I'm glad I put in GTA 5 tonight and skipped this game, talk about a snorefest.

I don't understand the hate Sam Bradford gets. If that kid was on the Packers or Saints who have an arsenal of offensive weapons, he would be putting up Kurt Warner type numbers. Plus not much of a run game since their war horse is living out his final years in Atlanta. Hopefully one day he gets the right coordinator and it does happen, if anything he's underrated.

    PS3?

And yeah, I don't get the Bradford hate either.  He has played for a team that has been rebuilding forever.  Really hasn't gotten a REAL weapon until this year (Austin), lost his running game and never really had a defense to depend on either.

  18. I think it took the failure of BP to put a complete/balanced team on the field to change the philosophy of Colts management.  If BP would've adjusted after a few years, then I feel that the Colts would've had multiple championships with Manning.  BP was stubborn and unwilling to change.  If Luck ends up with several rings when it's over, then it will validate management's new vision of the team.

I really don't think that the new philosophy will turn Luck into a game manager - he still may get his 4000 yards each year.  The difference will be that he'll be able to it without throwing it 40 times a game.  A solid running game will make Luck even more dangerous and it will also allow us to run out the clock late in the 4th quarter more often while protecting a lead.

BP would still be here if he had just adjusted.
