a lot of the recent super bowl winners had game changing tight ends bowers would have been a nice addition but i like who we got, imo an a plus draft

the thing is, our game changing TE may be on the roster in jelani woods.  He just has to stay healthy.  Remember that stretch of games where he scored a touchdown in every game he played in until he got hurt?

idk what injury bug bit him, but I hope it doesn’t bite him again this season.

  2. Great episode!  Gotta couple notes here I took:

    - confirms we were indeed looking to trade up.  My gut tells me it was definitely for one of the big 3 WRs or bowers based off Ballard remark “Let’s try and if it doesn’t happen, we’ll let the draft play itself out.” (Paraphrased).

    - they were interested in Latu but didn’t think he’d be there.  I don’t think anyone thought he’d be there at 15 lol.  Don’t know where Latu was at on our board but he was obviously toward the top.  Also can tell he was toward the top based on Ballard reaction “we got the best pass rusher in the entire draft”

    - I’m guessing WR was definitely on the top of our board.  Ballard mentioned wanting speed at the position.  AD falling into his lap couldn’t have played out any better.  Also, good to see Reggie happy about his new toys in AD and Gould.

    - No side remarks or mentions of any corners.  I’m going to stick with what I said before the draft and that corner was never on our radar.  What also makes me believe that more than ever is that we had the option to choose between the top 2 corners and even in later rounds other corners and we chose not to.  I’ve said it before, Ballard is straightforward.  If he says “I like what we have” he’s not drafting it unless there’s a player that you can’t miss on.  If he says “this draft is deep in ___” you can bet that’s what he has his eyes on and will most likely double dip.  He said he likes our corners, didn’t draft one.  He said this draft was deep in receivers and OL, we drafted 2 of each.

Mitchell is going to need watching after by grown-ups. He had a low level response to where he was drafted. And Ballard passing on him tells me AD has issues and they are known in the community.

I think that’s because he fell so far.  He went from being a 1st rounder to being selected in the 2nd round.  Many rankings had him as either the 4th or 5th best WR behind the big 3.  And big part of it is what was being said about him.  Who knows if what was said is true or not.

i think since we chose him we’re ok lol.  It’s him vs the league, and I honestly love it.  Means he’s motivated.  That hunger should translate well into hustle and grind.  And if he doesn’t start right away, I hope he takes it as a sign to get better,  not a sign of slight.

Maybe throw a 5 WR set out there with Gould (since this is his thread, lol)

Id say even better, line up JT on the line.  Run the no huddle.  Anytime we want to run, just motion JT next to AR and either hand it off or keep it and run, or run an RPO, or just run a pass play.  Keeps the defense on the field and guessing.  I can’t wait to see the stuff Shane does with this offense.

If Alec Pierce is our WR4, God help NFL secondaries.

I think we have a good WR room.  Could be VERY good depending on development.

dont get me wrong, I want Alec Pierce to succeed.  But I’m not among the people that think he’s going to be good just because AR is going to launch it to him.  Alec has some growing to do and AR does as well.

And I may be wrong.  AP might become an absolute monster and Moss defenders on a consistent basis.  But I’m just going off what I’ve seen.  I know what the stats say regarding his separation and what not, but my eyes tell me different.  All in all, I hope for the best because I want us to be the best.

It’s not.  Again, a lot of people think Pierce’s struggles were related to the QB play.  If that’s true Pierce could explode with Richardson.  We shall see.  We are also assuming Mitchell is going to work at the NFL level because he’s the newest player.  That’s not a given.  Campbell and perhaps Pierce were both second round picks that didn’t and haven’t panned out so far so Mitchell is not a sure thing.  He’s going to have to earn it and he has the skill set to do it.  There is also nothing wrong with making him earn it.  For the record I want Mitchell to work out and I want Pierce to explode because both are best for the Colts.

Yeah, we’ll see.  I think Pierce has to develop his route tree because he doesn’t have that burner speed.  Yeah, having AR launch it to him will be better but if he isn’t elite at catching 50/50 balls then it’ll be for nothing.  Pierce with an improved route tree would be fantastic.  But Pierce just running go routes, I don’t know how long that’s going to last.

He’s got to beat Pierce out before he’s a starter.  He’s going to go to camp number four on the depth chart in all likely hood.  A lot of people think Richardson will finally unlock Pierce so if that happens Mitchell will be a fill in guy who slowly sees his snaps go up if he performs.

I think him beating out Pierce is a given.  Idk man, I just think Pierce doesn’t have the speed to get separation at an NFL level.  He excels at 50/50 balls so I think we will see him closer to the red zone, especially with what he brings in the run game.  I think he’s a better fit for this offense as a WR4.

  8. I’m not going to lie, up until the draft I was focused on us trading up and getting one of the top 3 WRs or Brock (or BTJ at 15) and going corner in the second…but I have to say I’m actually happier that the draft played out this way.

    - we got THE best pass rusher in the draft who was ranked 10 by PFF and got him at 15 (thank you falcons lol)

    - we got the WR we needed in the second round, who was ranked 22 by PFF and most say the 5th best receiver in this DEEP draft behind the big 3 and BTJ

    - we got probably the best returner in this draft in the first year of the kickoff changes…which I think will become such an important part of the game.

Without including the rest of the draft, that’s THREE possible impact players alone.

If we have money for a FA, IMHO it should be FS, then CB

The back end is so so important in THIS zone that the Colts play 99% of the time with big (but a touch slower) CBs spec

The FS cleans it all up

Thats why I think we should use any remaining cap money to bring in a decent FS

We could use a stud CB, we have limited cash

I find myself agreeing with you a lot!

Definitely agree here.  I mentioned in the past that In this defensive scheme, DE and FS are probably the most important positions.  The DEs (and DL) apply pressure without blitzing and the FS keeps you from getting beat deep.

we now have our DEs, we need to get our FS.  I would LOVE for Ballard to get Simmons.  2 or 3 year contract and I’m set.

  10. - Downs backup

    - possible gadget player for certain situations

    - return specialist.  He’s going to be super valuable with the new rules

    - developmental project

I’ll tell you one thing, loving the speed we’ve picked up on offense this draft.  Both receivers taken run sub 4.4s.  Not to mention the qb runs a 4.4.  Shane definitely wanted more speed.

I think it needs to be said after reading all the overreactions, ignore the medical for a second which to me is an non-issue since the guy has been healthy and productive the last two years and I'm more then confident the colts did their homework extensively to have him so high on their board, take away that this draft is top heavy with offensive talent and desperate QB teams, we're talking about a guy that talent-wise is a top 5 player that fell to 15. This isn't Kwity Paye or Turay, or Werner where your banking on traits instead of production. This is a proven pass rusher who's averaged 12 sacks the last two years after he was forced by Washington to retire to open a scholarship spot. Watch the kid play before passing judgement. That's all I ask.

yup, and the way we’re going to beat the Texans and their high powered offense is with a high powered pass rush.

pundits are saying we got an absolute dog and we got him at the one of the most expensive positions for 5 years.

Paye played a career high 700 snap. He was in a rotation with Ebukam, Dayo, and Lewis. You think he should have played 200 more snaps like Joey Bosa? Bosa had 2 more sacks than Kwity.

joey bosa played 9 games in 2023

Paye hasnt even had a year 4 yet.

His first 3 years are WAY better than Hendricksons first 3 years.

My bad, you’re right.  I don’t know who stats I was looking at last night lol.  Hennessy will do that. ;(

Well, Trey production might’ve been due to him being in a rotation over there in NO before he got to Cincy, with him being a third rounder.  But either way, Trey turned it on year 4.  So you’re right, I’ll give qwitty one more year.  Not saying qwitty is bad, but we do need more from that position.  And it seems Ballard and co agrees as this is his second attempt at trying to upgrade that position this off-season.

I agree with the pick, we can’t wait and hope for something when we have an opportunity to possibly upgrade at a premium position and one of the highest paying positions.  Due to the way the draft played out, We had the opportunity to pick the FIRST defensive player off the board, which also mean probably the BEST defensive player on the board (depending on how whoever looks at it).  We don’t know when we’ll have that opportunity if ever again.

  15. I just knew there was going to be a run on WRs later in the first.

welp, hoping we trade up for either AD (character concerns and all) or Troy Franklin.

there is no way we can leave this draft not drafting some type of burner in this deep WR draft.

Welp, can’t be too mad.  We can’t pick ‘em all and I’m ok with who we picked.

  16. 2 hours ago, Goatface Killah said:

Are you comparing Paye to Hendrickson who is in year 8? Thats just not fair to Kwity. You need to allow guys time to develop.

Ebukam is a guy they are probably gonna let walk after this year. Buck isnt getting any younger. There is plenty of room for all these guys.

I think the plan is for Paye, Dayo and Latu to be the core of this defensive line for a long time.

I mean, i kinda ma because in year 4 Trey had 13.5 sacks and probably way more pressures than paye has had in year 4.  Paye has one more year to show he can be the pass rusher we need.

and only reason why Trey was being compared to Paye is because someone else brought him.  There is honestly no comparison when it comes to their year 4s
