  1. I must be the only person who saw it this way, but I didn't see a replay of Speed's non-call that showed definitive PI.  You can't see what EJ's doing with his back arm.  You see EJ swiping at the ball with his left hand, and after the ball goes by you see Flowers whip around and flail his arms.  He tried to sell it, but I'm not convinced EJ interfered.  Everyone seems to admit it was a bad non-call, but I'm not even sure it was PI at all...

  2. Yeah, the secondary hasn't played too well yet - not a lot to lose there.  I suppose they did well enough in the Texan game before Prevent Defense time started in the 3rd quarter.  I don't think we're losing too much if Tony Brown goes in for Moore.  I'm much more worried about the IOL - that's where I expect our OL to win big against the Ravens.

  3. Y’know, I got tired of reading how untalented we were in the off-season, so I looked for a more objective measure to tell how we measured up.  I’ve been tracking the pff scores of the Colts against those of our opponents, and by that measure we haven’t been seriously outclassed yet.  In fact, this will be the third week in a row that we have a big advantage on both LoS.  That’ll keep us in a lot of games.  This week, we’re catching some breaks, in that their NB just went on the IR and their best DL (Oweh) seems on track to miss the game.  It’s also a trap game for them (if you can have one this early in the season), in that it’s sandwiched between two important divisional games.

I said all that to say this:

    Colts 31

    Ravens 21

  4. I hate to say it, bc I’ve always been a fan, but Mo should go.  The others are all young, on rookie contracts, and in need of PT.  You’ll be better off next year from having played Ogletree, Woods, Mallory, and Granson this year…

  5. Yeah, I didn’t write that we’d bench Pierce altogether.  All teams use many different packages on offense, and I’m just saying to have a higher percentage of your plays entail 2 TEs or MPJ/Downs/McKenzie combos and a lower % with Pierce.

BTW, one other thing: Fries was on PFF’s all week 2 team.  It raised his season score from 55.4 to 74.4.  The OL is looking pretty solid, but they haven’t played a top DL yet…

  6. I decided to track our players’ pff grades this year to see if they reveal anything I don’t notice from my live watching of the game.  I know - pff scores aren’t perfect, but at least they are an objective measure against which I can test my preconceived notions.  Here are the roster changes that my analysis of pff scores would suggest:

    1) Bench Darrell Baker and start Tony Brown.  I thought Baker’s week 1 problems that led to a 45 pff grade were related to covering Ridley.  However, his cumulative 2023 grade went down over 12 points against the Texans.  Whether you move Moore outside and put Brown in the slot or you do a direct replacement, I’d get Baker outta there before we start playing good receiving corps.

    2) Play Pierce less and McKenzie/Mallory/Ogletree more.  I think it’s time to reduce Alec’s role until he earns it back.  I’d get these others on the field anyway, as it doesn’t seem like deep shots are in the cards in the near future.  Mallory could be a real YAC guy.  In general I’d like to spread out the snaps to more guys and see who develops into an AR favorite.

Also) I’d keep a watch on Rodney Thomas.  His Game 2 was better than the first, but his 2023 grade is 50.8.  In very limited snaps, Cross is about 10 point higher.

  7. Y’know, I looked up predictions for this game, and nobody made the huge point that Houston’s OL is critically unhealthy right now.  They lost their staring RT (Fant) during the game Sunday, and he was their highest rated OL.  They’re likely shifting Josh Jones, who’s been on the team for 3 weeks and started at LG Sunday, to RT for our game.  And a player who only played ST last year will start at LG…

I don’t like their chances of doing anything on offense if Buckner, Zaire, Grover, and Shaqius Leonard are dominating them…

  8. Fwiw, the overall pff grades are up for yesterday, and every one of our OL graded out in the low 70s except Fries, who was 55.4.   Compare that to the OL we’re playing next (Houston), and their highest grade was 69.4 and they had a player at 43.7 and two in the 50s.  Since it might make more sense to compare to their D: they have one player over 70 in the defensive front 7 (Will Anderson - 83.1).  For the next week, anyway, I think the OL is the least of our worries…

Exactly!  They had to kick the FG even if they scored a TD, which meant an onside kick.

So, kick the FG and try the onside kick.

Shane is apparently learning as much as AR5 is.  Those 4th down calls were odd.  Should have taken the points on the first one.  The Jags were owning our O line.

I agree with what Steichen did.  You’re close enough for the TD now, so get it!  If you kick the FG, not only do you have to get the on-sides kick, but you have to go half the field for a TD with little time on the clock.  You get the TD, and you only have 15 to FG range and could actually WIN in regulation with another TD…

  10. I mapped out the most recent pff grades for the entire starting lineups for both teams.  The results were very interesting.  The Jags had a big advantages for all offensive skill positions, and an advantage in the secondary.  But, surprisingly, the Colts had a big advantage all across the OL and defensive front 7.  Like a BIG advantage across most of those positions.  Opens up a great path to victory through controlling the LoS.

  11. We’re getting our live TV streamed through YouTube TV so we can have the NFL Sunday Ticket.  However, one caveat is that they black out live games that are on the local networks (the in-market games) on both the Sunday ticket and the live TV feed.  So, I think I will be able to stream those games as soon as they’re over.  That’s how it worked for in-market games during the pre-season, anyway.

  12. I was looking up Pff grades for Indy and Jax, and I’m starting to feel pretty confident about this game.  Particularly that we may be able to control both lines of scrimmage.  Their OL is pretty bottom tier.  They are trotting the same three interior starters as last year, and they were all rated poorly (basically two 61s and a 48).  And their 2nd year RT has to go to LT due to Cam Robinson’s suspension, and 1st round RT Anton Harrison will probably struggle.  All 4 of our DL starters should have a good advantage, especially Buckner.

And speaking of Ds, their front 7 is pretty pedestrian.  Josh Allen is elite, grading out about like Buckner.  But the three down linemen are pretty poor.  And Travon Walker was poor.  One LB named Oluokun was not bad, but they just had very little outside of Allen in the front 7.  If you subscribe to the theory that games are won and lost on the LoS, you should feel better about this game…
