Tom Curran from Boston article above.  He leads with "...the session, I'm told, went "very well."

It apparently happened Wednesday night too, not today.  Interesting to read Josh has a younger brother on the Bears staff - I was unaware of that.  Not sure it matters one way or the other.

Excited to see this possibly happen. I liked the part that talks about Dungy possibly advocating for McDaniels to Ballard and Irsay.

Could of fooled me on the doom and gloom! i think you are wrong quoting Luck as saying "at this time". I think that was Irsay. He is what SB is quoting him saying and also what I heard him say. "Among other things, Andrew Luck stated that he doesn’t feel he needs another surgery, and that he has no issues with the Colts organization. " He did not add "at this time" and this seems to be important to you.

I agree with you. Adding conditions to fit a narrative doesn’t bode well at all.

That's literally mine. Was gonna post it then ya beat me to the punch haha.

But yeah I like guys who are very well respected in the league. Gives me confidence that they can build a strong staff around them too. I don't know if any of the other names are more respected than the 3 you named.

    Great minds think alike haha.

I think the Colts have a better pool to select from this time around as well. Some people have mentioned Pat Shurmur but I’m not completely sold on him either.

  4. Top 3 in order:

    1. McDaniels: I believe he’s learned from his failure in Denver. He will run an offense that will be both QB friendly and productive. He also has some good connections in New England and around the league to assemble a good staff.

    2. Toub: One of the most highly regarded special teams coaches out there and well respected around the league. He already has a strong working relationship with Ballard.

    3. Nagy: Andy Reid has called him the best head coaching prospect he’s ever seen. He has run a terrific offense out in KC that has gotten a lot out of the weapons he has.

By all accounts, McDaniels appears to be the most coveted candidate.  This seems to be a down year for head coach candidates overall. In my opinion, I still don't see why every team looking for a head coach seems to be so high on this guy.  I'm always suspect of coaches coming out of New England because their success is so system driven and they seldom thrive after leaving Belichick & Brady.  Are Josh's accolades warranted or is he simply the prettiest ugly girl at the dance?  Was his showing in Denver indicative of his head coaching abilities or a necessary learning experience derived from failure?  Hopefully, Ballard will be able to discern which is the case.

Well in terms of lessons learned, I think McDaniels has learned some:

Just out of curiosity where did you pick up Irsay states pairing Luck with an Edgerrin type player out of this?  I read it three times and never noticed him saying that.

Not that I would be opposed but I just didn't see what you are saying out of this interview.

He literally said it in the press conference.

If he is the head coach he might not be running the offense as much as some might think. Whoever he picks as offensive coordinator would likely be doing that. As head coach McDaniels would have more responsibilities and will have to give his attention to all areas of the team. Similar to when Pagano was hired how many of us expected he would transform the Colts defense into the Ravens lite and be heavily involved on that side of the ball.  Didn’t quite happen that way and Pagano ended up mostly entrusting his defenses to his various DC’s. I think McDaniels would have some involvement in the offense but to be effective in a head coaching capacity he probably won’t be able to be as involved in the offense as he currently is in his role with New England.

Yeah but I certainly think part of his draw would be the type of offensive system he wants to run. The EP system he runs in New England could easily be run with a different OC but it’s more predicated on the QB and his ability to dissect a defense and run concept plays in which Luck could easily be one of the best at given his level of talent.

I think it has faded. Zeke is a stud and all, but demarco Murray was league MVP under similar circumstances.

Look at what Gurley has done as well. The problem is that the talent level of RB’s has leveled along with offenses in the NFL not requiring the running game to be the focal point. But a back like Barkley could be beneficial to Luck in more ways than one.

I think the NFL has changed dramatically in the last 20 years. I also think you can get a quality RB in later rounds. I'm watching Derrius Guice show out against Notre Dame right now, I wouldn't mind him in the second. He's not as good as Barkley, but he could be a lead back for a good offense also.

Look I’m not advocating for Barkley because he’s a “good” RB like the rest of the players could easily be. I’m advocating for him because he’s a special talent on the lines of Zeke Elliott with the Cowboys. The era of the every down back is fading yes, but the impact of having a truly special RB has not.

As long as we get Barkley in the second round, I'm on board with that. ;)

Lol he could easily be the Edge equivalent for Luck that he’s never had.

    Or maybe an offensive line.

Offensive scheme and free agency and the draft could really help turn that around and still allow the Colts to get a superb RB that this team hasn’t had in a long time.

To be honest, McDaniels started 8-0 or something like that as Broncos HC with Orton as QB. His issues came with control of personnel, that he abruptly got rid of Cutler, Marshall etc., drafting Tebow too.

So while focusing on his maturity issues, people are overlooking some levels of success he has with the Broncos results.

Agreed. I’ll link this article again so people can read and gain some insight on how McDaniels has changed.

I don't get the fetish this forum has for McDaniels..... I'm not against the possibility but I'm not sold on the notion either

Hes my #2. Only want him for the type of offense he would run but I want to be absolutely sure that he’s learned from his failure in Denver.

So if Nelson is number 1 on the Browns board they should take him with the first pick?

If they truly believe that he is the most talented player then yes. But the only exceptions teams should make is for a QB. Obviously if the most talented player is a QB the Colts shouldn’t take one but if the Browns see a potential franchise QB that is near the same grade as say a guard, then they should take the QB. It’s one of those positions that’s more weighted then the others obviously.

Regarding Chubb, the thing that worries me is he isn't a safe pick. And he's not elite. The players I consider safe and elite are Barkley, Fitzpatrick, and Nelson.

Bingo. With a pick that high, you take the best player available regardless of position. Barkley is more talented and a higher impact position. If he’s there, Colts have to take him unless some other team offers a huge deal to move up.

  15. I believe he will be back next year with no issues but I do believe there was certainly some doubt. There was a part where he was asked about the surgery itself and he paused and looked down at the ground for a few seconds and said that "some people never come back the same" and it told me that he knew the gravity of what he was going through. I can only imagine what he's gone through from not just a physical perspective but a mental one as well.

It will make his come back that much sweeter next year.
