I think Andrew's greatest influence on the game will be his ability to audible out of "run up the gut on 1st" when he sees 11 players, plus the coaching staff and water boys in the box.  I would have to think his on-field vision (ability to pick up blitzes, etc) is better than Brissett's, which *should* be a major factor as well.

From what little I have seen, I think the ability to scramble out of the pocket is very similar between them, and arm strength is probably slightly better in Luck.

Where I wish Luck would learn from Brissett is where you see the emotion on the sidelines.  You couldn't help but see the fire in Brissett's gut after the pick 6.  I know I'm asking a leopard to change its spots, but I wish Andrew would have a bit of that in him.

I agree. Andrew has gotten mad before on the sidelines but I've rarely if ever seen him getting his teammates hyped in the way that Brissett was trying to. There's nothing with the way Luck motivates or talks to his teammates, but it would be refreshing to see him have a little more fire on the sidelines.

I hear you.  My only comment was I was happy for Andrew that he has, it appears,   at least reached the point where he can practice and throw again.  You know it has to have been killing him to not be able to participate in anything.

At least it's a step in the right direction.

Yeah it's exciting for him personally and for those of us that truly enjoy watching him play. I just wish he was coming back to better circumstances.

I think we're going to play pretty good defense against Seattle.  I think the communication gets better having guys like Vontae and Darius Butler out

there along with the the young guys.  I don't know what our plan is going to

be when it comes to dealing with Jimmy Graham and the other young tight

    end though .

The fortunate part is that the Seahawks still haven't really figured out how to use Graham yet.

  4. In terms of their playing style, the two QB's are very similar. They both are bigger, more mobile QB's and have strong arms. But that's really where the comparison in ends because when it comes to their skill level, it's not close.

    Exactly,

This article is garbage: it implies lack of character based on superficial reasons.

What if Moncrief wore that T shirt prior to the game as a confidence builder? While I agree there is no "I in team", I don't think its an issue,

As far as TY diving - didn't Marvin do the same thing? Nothing wrong with self-preservation when you are 5'9". It's not like he dives on EVERY play. And as far as his statement of practicing on his day off, players need rest and have every right to have a day off. He did say they work on timing, after practice.

My major irritation at articles like this is that it reminds me of a schoolyard mentality where kids point fingers at other kids that fail. The overall intention is to question Pagano's ability to control the team, that no matter what happens or what individual players decide what to say (or what to wear), it comes back to the HC.

I am shocked at some writers and fans who KNEW the Colts would need time to gel with a new defense and injuries to key players, yet instead of being patient and seeing that there was progress between game 1 and 2, they criticize and choose to look on the negative issues (or creating negative issues) that are being addressed week by week.

I hope this team gets better every week, gets healthy and into the playoffs......WITH Chuck Pagano

I think you're confusing the cause and effect here. The cause Doyel is referring to is overinflated ego's resulting in lethargic attitude's and play.

Marvin earned the right to dive because he was consistently making plays. TY, while he displays an amazing measure of talent sometimes, hasn't earned that yet.

Now, is Doyel being a little over the top with some of his assessments? Probably. But he isn't wrong in some of what he's saying.

Guess he likes people who practice a lot.  LOL.   Seriously who gives a darn as long as they play in the game.  Who actually kept up with how many times Bethea practiced anyway?

To be fair, just because a player suits up and plays doesn't mean he will be effective if he's injured.

Not super worried. But worried nonetheless. It is what it is. We gotta figure out what's causing these injuries. Not trying to blame pagano for yet another issue with the team, but year in and year out,  we have been one of the most injured teams , we changed training camp locations, we've changed strength and conditioning coaches as well as trainers, so it's either the field at west 56th street or it's how pagano runs his practices. We  have had very durable players come here and then become injury prone. There's gotta be a link somewhere

I agree. It's one of the most puzzling problems this team has had since Pagano came here. Ironically, Pagano has been one of the most conservative coaches when it comes to injuries (practice intensity, holding players out for rest etc.). Yet, the team seems to have a very high number of injuries each year. I'm not sure what the direct answer is honestly.

The point he was trying to make is,   if tolzien starts,   it means JB  isn't ready.   We all know tolzien sucks,   but throwing JB in before he is ready isn't a good idea

You are lending too much credence to the coaching staff and their ability to make sound personnel decisions when there hasn't been much evidence here lately.

So now, instead of one person learning the offense that's been installed for the last 4 months, you want the rest of the team to learn an option offense. That includes the OL that can't run a screen play or pick up a stunt...

Let's acknowledge how difficult it really is to throw a brand new QB into the mix two weeks before a game, and expect an acceptable performance. This would be a monumental task for even the best coaching staff. This staff did something similar in the past, but they had literally no other choice.

I'd rather see Brissett than Tolzien, just like practically everyone else, but if it doesn't happen in Week 2, it's entirely understandable.

It's really not understandable though. Tolzien was NEVER the reasonable option to begin with, dating back to preseason when him and Morris were "competing" for the backup role. He doesn't have the arm strength this offense requires among his many other issues. Now, the team has prepared and put out a starter on much less notice beforehand. While the team didn't have a choice at that time, they really don't have one here either. If the team falls to 0-2 (which may still be a distinct possibility with Brissett), the season will be over.

Ok, so the Colts held out hope Manning would play at some point in 2011.  How is that different than the Colts holding out hope Luck can play at some point this year?  Irsay said Luck would be ready to start the season, it's week 2 and he still isn't practicing. You cant listen to Irsay, he has a business to run, it's not smart business to tell you before the start of the season that the starting QB and most important player on the team won't play a game this season.

Because its a different injury with a different timeline. Everyone has been consistent in their expectations that Luck would be back around the early part of the season which was part of the reason why they took him off PUP. If the team didn't give any sort of timeline whatsoever and if his injury would warrant that type of timeline, then people would have a case.

  11. 1 minute ago, indy1888 said:

No, it's not entirely different.  Manning suffered his setback before the regular season even started.  They knew the problem they had with him. They could have easily put him on I.R.   Sure, they "thought" Luck might return in 2015, kinda like they "think" Luck might return this year.

Again, they thought Manning would be ready to go before the season was over and held out hope for that. At no point did the Colts make ANY notions about Luck returning before the season was in over 15' the way they have about him this season.

It would be different if the Colts.Irsay didn't talk about Luck coming back at the start of the season but they were fairly vocal in saying that he should be back at some point early in the year.

  12. 13 minutes ago, indy1888 said:

Same reason they didn't put Manning on IR the year he never played, same reason they didn't put Luck on IR the year he lacerated his kidney.  They want to hold out hope he can return plus not kill business.

They didn't put Manning on IR because they weren't expecting the setback that occurred with him. They also thought Luck had a shot at the end of the season back in 15'. Entirely difference circumstances here where everyone was preaching that Luck would return at some point early this season.

That's the point I made is that the Colts saw SOMETHING in him that others didn't. Like you I think they HANDED him the job too easy. I thought they should have given Josh Freeman another look before they brought in Tolzien last year. At least he had some nfl wins under his belt and had shown a lot of promise in Tampa until the new staff under first time nfl hc Greg Schiano came in. I just hope Luck is not out too much longer but that all depends on his health and by no means should they rush him back if he's not 100%

Here's the thing. A LOT of coaches and front office staff around the league have ego's the size of Saturn. They are stubborn on players that sometimes the rest of the world can see aren't good. Some don't want their evaluations to be proven wrong while others continue to see things in practice or elsewhere that lead them to believe a player is better than he actually is. I'm led to believe that Pagano and his staff were likely stubborn when it came to Tolzien even though the rest of the world could see he wasn't the best option.

Well why should the GM have to stop the head coach from being flat out stupid?

Given a choice of QB's a head coach aught to be able to pick out who he wants for his starter.  Same thing at CB.

Now it's the GM's fault if the talent isn't even brought in in the first place.  For that you have to wait a few years to see if the GM is bringing in genuine talent or not.

But when a coach isn't starting the most talented players he has available to him, then there is a problem.

No I agree. Ballard should not have to step in, which is probably why he didn't.

GM's get the players, coaches decide how to play them. Maybe there's some conversations about certain players/scenarios but thats generally how Irsay has historically structured the team.

Agree here as well. Pagano isn't playing the best players available and should take the blame for that.

I hope I'm wrong too but remember Chucky P. decided that he wanted to keep Tolzien (who's never been good in his entire career.) over Morris because Tolzien was apparently better in OTA's.

I will be pleasantly surprised if that doesn't happen.

I'm speculating here but I think Ballard is letting Pagano walk himself off the ledge. The decisions to start Tolzien and Green at CB reek of Pagano's stubbornness.

    Watch . . .

Pagano is going to talk like he's not sure about the starter next week.  Say something about watching film or some crap like that.

Scott Tolzien is going to get the majority of the 1st team reps in practice Wednesday and Thursday.  During those days Pagano will talk about "competition" and "chopping wood" and "next man up"  Talk about how well Tolzien prepares, how smart he is, and how well he knows the offense.

Friday Pagano says "Scott Tolzien is our starter against Arizona."  Tolzien will again throw more touchdown passes to the other team then to his own team.  Brissett will come in again once the game is firmly out of hand.  Do decently well under the circumstances. . . But the Colts lose by 30+ points.  Andrew Luck will again stare helplessly up at the scoreboard thinking "I sure do hope Ballard drafts me a decent OL, or improves the defense after all of this."

    Rinse - Repeat.

Get used to it Gentlemen. . . it's going to be like this for a while.

I really hope you are wrong but this sounds exactly like what will happen.
