For me, it's purely wanting to fix, or at least TRY to fix, the unit that needs the most improvement on the team.  That to me is the defense.  The offense was a top 10 unit.  The defense was a bottom 5 unit.  And on that unit, the most glaring need IMHO is pass rush, although each level could stand some upgrades.  For me, it is no more complicated than that.  I try to keep this simple.

Don't get me wrong, I would love to have Dalvin Cook.  But with only 1 1st round pick, I want a defensive guy that can get to the QB.

Look, I completely understand the defense needs fixing. But why would the Colts spend a pick on a defensive player that they may be reaching early for simply because he's a defensive player? In that situation, you take the best player available and by most account's that I've read, Cook would be the best player if he is indeed available.

Cook is viewed by many here as a luxury pick because (A) there's a popular school of thought that a team (any team) should not draft a running back in the first round.      Not enough value.

And (B) this is a very rare and deep draft class for running backs, so if you don't take a 1st round RB,  you can always find a very good RB in the next two or three rounds or so.

That's why the view on Cooks by many here.

The question becomes,  does Ballard share that view?

I typically agree with that notion taking a RB in the first round isn't justifiable. However, Cook and Fournette are fairly ahead of the other RB's in this class and if either one of them are available, you take them.

Because running the ball starts with the offensive line.  Add in the fact that running backs often have a short shelf life, why spend a premium pick on one?

Because he's a premium talent. You're looking a top 10, possibly top 8 player who would be available to you at 14/15. You'd be getting a high return for the draft pick slot you're in.

I view Cook as a luxury pick because of the value of the position, relative to the quality depth in this draft. You'll be able to draft a starter quality RB in the 3rd or 4th round, whereas there's a much steeper drop-off in defensive talent after the 1st round.

Starter quality RB vs. Top tier talent RB is really the question here. Now, if Cook and Fournette are off the board by the time the Colts pick then taking a RB comes off the table. You take Cook because if he's there, he is considered a top 10 talent where the Colts will be picking at 14-15. And as I mentioned previously, RB isn't exactly a luxury pick when Gore is 34 and there is no other RB on the team that doesn't have question marks.

  3. Couple of things:

    1. If Dalvin Cook is available by the time the Colts pick, they should take him. The reason why? He is rated as a top 10 talent  while many of the good pass rushers will be off the board by then.

    2. Yes, running backs are devalued. This is in an era where having a decent offensive line can make most RB's look serviceable. But here's the thing, the Colts offensive line is still far from great and while Gore is defying the odds, it's a matter of time before the wheels come off.

Take Cook and watch how much more productive the Colts offense becomes.

  4. Great breakdown. Appreciate you putting the time in to give all the information.

Personally, I think the 2005 team was the best one. Irsay said it himself that the team that year had virtually no weaknesses. I still believe that the death of Dungy's son did something to that team along with the fact that they rested for such a long time towards the end of the season. The offense was so balanced and the defense was consistently good.

I think he should wear the black glove from now on.

I wish he would do it in weather games. I feel like his passes seem to lose something in those games and a lot of QB's switched to using gloves and found success (including Peyton who didn't do it for years).

I don't think this is about PEDs use being more scrutinized.  I think it's just about the value.  DQ's performance is not worth $5 mil at this point, so it makes more sense to cut him than keep him.  Even if he didn't get busted for PEDs, this would have been the smart move.

I think he also (somehow) got a vote to be 1st team All-Pro that year

Value was the major part of it but the PED's certainly aided in the team's decision to let him go.

So he didn't sign Arthur Jones, Andre Johnson, Hakeem Nicks, Frank Gore, DQ, Laron Landry, Gosdner Cherilus??? These were all top end free agents at their positions the year they came in from FA....and they were just as much a mixed bag as the lesser free agents we've signed like Mike Adams and Langford and Butler, and I think Walden lived up to his contract. Fact is it's hit or miss no matter what...very seldom does FA solve much other than the problem of having too much cap space....solves that issue pretty quickly usually. Typically there are only a handful of FA that hit it big after signing to a new team...and id say a majority are under the radar signings at the time. There are always a few exceptions but let's not act like signing the top 3 free agents on NFLs free agent tracker will just fix everything or even work out.

None of the players you mentioned lived up to the contract they signed other than maybe Gore and Butler. My point is, you have teams like the Broncos who paid for players like TJ Ward, Demarcus Ware and Aqib Talib and got their money's worth from those players. No one said free agency solves all your problems either. I'd just rather see the Colts sign players that can atleast somewhat justify the contract they end up getting. Having a different GM might be the key to that this time around.

I think that there are alot of guys in this league (specifically free agents) that are not stars or atleast aren't household names but are still highly effective and above-average starters. Sites like PFF help quantify ever player's contribution and merit (though I do agree sometimes they are wrong) and can help average fans learn of guys that play well, are young, and aren't gonna break the bank.

I have full trust in Ballard to go after these types of guys rather than going after headline players. I don't think we will be seeing household free agent names coming to Indy year in year out. What I do see are bargain buys, reclamation projects, guys with huge upside, guys that need new scenery, etc. You don't have to go out and buy a Poe or a Berry to call free agency a success.

Grigson tried this approach with guys like Walden, RJF and a few other guys. At the end of the day, you are going to overpay in free agency most of the time. Might as well spend it on a player that will actually live up to contract.

Yeah I know because Jenkins, Harrison, and Vernon all sucked this year for NYG. And Talib, Ward, and Ware were really bad for Denver. You just gotta make the right signings bro. Smart signings. Not Laron Landry, Trent Cole signings. For example Nick Perry's value is trending WAY up. That's a smart signing. His best football is the next 5-6 years.

Agreed. And with how the cap works, the Colts HAVE to spend a certain amount of the money they have anyway.

I think it's safe to say there won't be.

One of Ballard's strengths was his apparent ability to put a good staff around him though, I remember reading that a few days back. I hope he gets his chance if he doesn't feel this staff is good enough.

I also wonder if by "staff", it was meant for his scouting and front office people and not coaching staff.

One thing I have faith in after watching the press conference, Ballard will become very familiar with the team's problems when he watches all 16 games.

He was mostly just talking about players when mentioning watching the games, but I think he'll catch on quickly to our lack of preparation, lack of consistency from half to half, and some very key coaching blunders.

At the very least I think we have somebody who will figure out the issues with both the players and coaches, and he'll have viable ways to fix them. Not to mention he'll handle it in a much friendlier way than Grigson apparently would.

His level of humility was refreshing for sure. He sold me within the first five minutes of him talking.

I kind of wish they wouldn't be so open about this. They stayed quiet for 3 weeks then finally fired him but now they are telling us everyone that is interviewing, saying when they are done, posting info about each person. It's like the bachelor. Unless Irsay is trying to gauge the fan's opinions now that he doesn't have his son that he never had by his side anymore.

I think you're reading too much into it. Letting the public know about their GM search isn't top secret information by any means.

I'm a fan of Ballard and Paton. Both have contributed to great personnel moves in their respected organizations. But I'm surprised Elliot wolf is only at 10%!?! I mean talk about a young prodigy, son of a hall of famer to the same craft, he's breed for this. Of course he probably could wait it out in green bay and get there GM job but who knows how long that'll take. If he's chompping at the bit, ready to take control of his own franchise I welcome him with open arms. With these 3 plus the Seattle squad, I pray we dont go with jimmy raye III. I know Ryan had the final say in everything, doesn't mean jimmy Raye wasn't consulting with him. Sure I bet they disagreed sometimes and Ryan might have just ignored some of Jimmy's opinions, but I really doubt that the exec of football operations doesn't have a single finger print on this laughing stock of a roster. I really don't even care what his resume looks like be4 indi, becuz since he's been here he hasn't done a thing to help this team succeed.

I think the main issue people have with Elliot is his age. Some fans also might be scared away by the idea of a son-prodigy type GM after what happened with Chris Polian.

Pretty sure Irsay is looking for a GM that can maximize the potential of this team for the long-term, not if they're going to be buddy-buddy with Pagano....

Chuck is probably gone after this hire anyways. Same thing happened to Caldwell.

Different circumstances from the Caldwell situation.

Yeah, I agree, I think the way he was talking he seemed like he'd all but made up his mind.

Which is why, before all these interviews got announced at least, I thought this GM search would be kind of just for show. But to me it seems likely that he is truly looking for a GM, just one that will take on Chuck for a year.

And given the other prospective GM positions that are out there, having Pagano as the coach for one year isn't that bad of a deal.
