I’ll admit I definitely expected to see more signings by now , but after Ballard’s free agency class last year, I definitely understand his process as well.

There is tons of undervalued/misutilized/underrated talent in the NFL - at least to me (as someone who doesn’t know all 53 on each team). I wasn’t jumping for joy over last season’s signings either , but I ended up liking most of them (if not all).

So I’m not going to overreact to something that hasn’t happened. By that I mean, the simple question of : are we better than last year? We won’t know until at least a few games into the season.

Fans have the luxury of judging roster acquisitions on if they work or not. It’s pretty black and white for us. I’m just going to wait and see if what Ballard does works . Then I’ll pass judgement.

The rest is kind of pointless. The NFL is so much different from other sports , it’s not as simple as like signing a big name in basketball and you can almost guarantee the level of impact they’ll have.

Football is far more complex and difficult to predict. The amount of good players that come out of nowhere in this league is absurd, in no other sport are undrafted players so successful for example.

I’m just going to let it play out because free agency in this sport is too unpredictable for me to pass judgement. I’ve learned that lesson over and over.

    .

I know people love trades and signings, and I do too , but I enjoy them for any team. Trying to figure out and judge what other teams are doing is at times fascinating (probably more than it should be),

But, it isn’t bothering me that we’re missing out on big names, because I know how friggin’ weird this sport is.

    Very well stated.

I'd be lying if I said I wasn't a little disappointed, or that this is how I'd have played free agency if I were Ballard. However, we aren't behind the scenes. We don't know how these negotiations have played out. It really could be as simple as these guys we've gone after not wanting to come here regardless of how much they were being offered.

Ballard has so far earned my trust, as he really did kill it last offseason. I remember thinking how much we overpaid Hankins, how Sheard and Simon were average, and how Woods and Bostic were both really bad, yet each of those signings turned out far better than I expected. While this offseason has not played out the way I wished, and I am not afraid to say that I disagree with Ballard, he has definitely earned the benefit of the doubt so far.

OK now I'm totally confused. Colts wouldn't pay Melvin, so we let him and sign for 6.5. Why would we not give him 7.5 to stay? Colts free agency this year has been mind blowing. 8.0-9.0 a year gets us a starting LB...NOTHING. Yet we can spend 6.0-7.0 a year on depth for the DLINE?. please explain what is going on.

I would have liked to keep Melvin and throw in a little half million sweetener to keep him, but I’m guessing this was similar to when we lost Jake Scott to the Titans. He overpriced himself and ended up taking less money than we would have given him out of pride.

I’m a big Polian fan and enjoy listening to him a lot, but lately he’s been annoying  me as he is very subjective when he talks about his players as opposed to current players. I even heard him saying, among other things that “there is no Cato June” on current Colts roster.

Common now, Cato June? That guy clearly had his moments but let’s not forget how frustrated the fans were with him as he was just a traffic cone in the path of Jaguars running backs.

And yes, it bothers me that he won’t even acknowledge Hooker, so much less Geathers as talented players the Colts have on their roster.

Yeah we don't have a Cato June, but we've got plenty of Gilbert Gardners we can build around since he likes below average LBs. Polian must have gone off the deep end if he thinks Cato June is a measuring point for quality LB play.

It seems like nobody in here wants to pay for top talent. Most would rather pay injured players prove it deals or grab the third or forth option because he's cheaper. Why even waste the money period when you can stop being cheap and pay for a player your going to get production out of. Landry would be the best player in FA to add to the offense besides Norwell.

I haven’t seen a more unanimous opinion than that we should sign Norwell and he’s the most costly free agent out there. Just because we don’t want to trade for Landry just to pay him 15 million a year doesn’t mean we don’t want to see the team use its cap space. He’s good, but he’s not ‘break the bank’ good.

There's a trade...This just in Andrew Luck, the star quarterback for the Indianapolis Colts, has been traded to Cleveland for #1, #4 and #33 picks in the 2018 Draft. I would be among the 10% Happy.

Colts Select: #1 Barkley RB, #3 Chubb DE and #4 Nelson G, #33 Miller OT, #36 Evans ILB

You wouldn’t be in the 10% happy crowd, you would be the only one happy to exchange Luck for a RB, guard, and a second round tackle.

  6. Ballard probably just doesn’t want to give up draft picks for expensive, aging, coming off an injury type players. We want to get younger. If we were a Richard Sherman away from making a championship run he’d probably be more likely to make that move.

But then we would totally miss out on B. Chubb who is an elite pass rusher/run stopper.

If @NorthernBlue‘s trade proposal is possible then I’d take that but I don’t think they’d give us next year’s first to move up three spots. I’m okay with missing out on Chubb for 4 additional draft picks in the first two rounds. I’m somewhat banking on a regression from the Bills but with a rookie QB I think it’s fairly likely.

That's why if we trade back I wouldn't want a 2 this year...prefer to have a future first. Teams that have multiple first round picks can get so creative in the way they move up or back on the board and really target a player or couple players. I know we want instant gratification but if move back we would be better off setting ourselves up for the future than taking the short term benefits.

ps....how does a guy like that end up at Houston and not Texas or Texas A&M or Oklahoma? I know he is from Houston but dang in the world of paying to steer players I'm willing to bet this kid was well represented lol. That or those guys at Texas etc are sure not doing a very good job recruiting.

That’s why I’m hoping for a trade back with the Bills. If we can get their firsts and seconds this year and a first next year I think we’re looking pretty good. Then I’d be hoping they draft Josh Allen and start him for the whole year so we get another early first next year.

  9. Honestly, both Good and Haeg looked a lot better at tackle than they did at guard. I would feel pretty good about going into next year with them holding down that spot. Both guard positions are more important to address this offseason, although I’ve always felt Glenn would be a very good guard. I wanted to draft him instead of Fleener in 2012.
