I know this thread is more about Ajayi and other potential visits but I just want to echo what folks have said about CJ Anderson. He’s really the only FA back I’m interested in. I’ve loved him since his first season as a Bronco and it was nice to see him still running hard after getting a chance with the Rams. Some guys you just root for and I’d love to root for him as a Colt.

I’m not super enthused about giving him so much money but his last three years are practically mirror images of Sammy Watkins three years prior to getting $12M a year from KC. I wouldn’t have guessed he’d eclipse it but it’s not surprising if he gets a similar contract to Watkins. Every situation is different but Watkins contract didn’t prevent the Chiefs from having arguably the best offense in the league last year.

When he’s released it will be because he’s a cap casualty on a team that wants to keep their one year wonder in Dee Ford. He’s still really solid and would be absolutely fine in a 4-3. He was rated 14th of all edge defenders on PFF and he’s been a model of consistency since he came into the league. I have no idea what he’d get on the open market but I’d absolutely give him what Brandon Graham got for an extension.

1. Brissett and our first wouldn’t get us Miami’s first.
2. If it magically did get us their first, I wouldn’t use it on a WR. The only way I’d want to trade up that high is for a stud Dlineman.

I really like Inman. I think he's a good guy, a good teammate, and a decent possession receiver that Luck has built a good rapport with in a very limited time. I don't see how he gets a ton on the market. He may have an inflated sense of his own worth so maybe he tests it, but I think he ends up signing here for around 2-3 million. He's two years removed from his best year in which he put up 800 yards, but in no other year did he put up more than 500, and I just think he needs us more than we need him. I like to see guys that Luck builds chemistry with stay in our offense. He seems to pick some non conventional players that he ends up trusting sometimes. Andre Johnson couldn't do anything with him but Donnie Avery had his best year as a pro.

Definitely leaning towards John Brown. Any WR that Arians likes is one I like. He’s been productive with QBs that can throw. I think he’d be just what we need opposite TY and could see an Ebron type resurgence if he came here.
Also keeping Inman. Between he, Pascal, Marcus Johnson, Cain, Fountain, and a likely draft pick, someone is gonna stick and some of the other ones can be stashed on PS.

I’d be against it. For an average LB I think he gets a contract he never comes close to living up to...think Anthony Hitchens last year.

Desir’s career has mirrored Rashaan Melvin’s much more than Kyle Fuller’s. He’s been a journeyman, fourth round pick (Melvin was undrafted), had one good year on his fourth team, and is the same age as Melvin was last year going into free agency. Kyle Fuller was a first round draft pick who has played well since his rookie year, just had one year where he was hurt in the preseason and went to IR.
Desir won’t come close to Fuller. He’ll be offered a shade more than Melvin. He can either pull a Melvin and have an inflated sense of his own ability, go to some crappy team like the Jets for the same contract we’re offering anyway, and end up hating it, or he can roll with the team that’s given him a chance and pile up W’s.

I would be so down for Grady Jarrett even at 15M per year. I think he’ll actually get more, probably just above Geno Atkins and Kawaan Short, so around 16.5M. As long as it’s structured right so we aren’t guaranteeing a ridiculous amount and get stuck with him for the entire contract if he underperforms or gets hurt. I don’t worry about that with Ballard though, they’ve done a great job at that so far. I do believe he’d be worth it. He’s right on par with the second tier DTs that are just below Aaron Donald.
As as far as the other two, I like the thought process but I’d go with different guys. Jordan Hicks and Adrian Amos I believe would fit better. I don’t think Alexander is that good and Collins fits better in a box safety role. He doesn’t cover deep very well. Hicks is great in coverage and Amos can play pretty much any role on the back end.

I find it funny how people compare GMs to others and say how 'they do it the right way' and things like that. ALL GMs say 'we're going to build through the draft', 'we want to develop our own', etc....Even Grigson said the same things. I don't think I've ever heard a GM come in somewhere and say, 'Obviously we want to build through free agency and use the draft to fill needs. We want to pay B free agents A money.' Grigson went after too many old free agents after the roster was established and he thought they'd get us over the top. He had a lot of misses through his tenure in all facets but his FAs weren't bad by default just because he spent money. The money needed to be spent, he just went after too many old players and add in a little bad luck with guys like Arthur Jones and he was the disaster he turned out to be.
Where Ballard has impressed me the most is in his convictions on what a guy is worth. A lot of us were all in on Norwell last year, he made an attempt on him, but the guy chose Jacksonville. He didn't just throw a bunch of money at him. Same with Ryan Jensen and Anthony Hitchens. We were all getting our hopes up for them, then their respective teams spent an absolute stupid amount on them, and I breathed a sigh of relief it wasn't us.
We know he's targeted names in free agency, and I expect that to continue. I just like the frugal sense that I get that we aren't going to make someone with chronic knee issues the highest paid player at his position. Smart, supplementary signings like Jabaal Sheard, Denico Autry, and Margus Hunt is how the good ones do it. It's not sexy but it works.

1. First things first, we gotta re-sign our own. Glowinski, Inman, Hunt, and Desir are our most valuable free agents, and none of them will break the bank. Glowinski fills out our line, Inman is a real viable #2 WR that Luck likes, Hunt has balled out at times and tired out at others from a pretty high snap count, and Desir has quietly been our best corner. I would also try to keep either Mike Mitchell, Clayton Geathers, or both. Geathers has always been solid if not great when he can stay healthy and I don’t think Mitchell’s veteran presence can be understated. Also offer RFA tenders to the decent young guys; Rogers, Farley, Boehm, etc.
2. Next we gotta get more bodies on the dline. I love the way Eberflus has schemed the front seven of the defense, and the role players they’ve brought in have exceeded my expectations. Autry and Hunt have been great at times. I do believe in a deep rotation though, and that we are not. One thing I find interesting is how effectively our somewhat tweener of a line has stopped the run. Woods really did not play that much and we’ve seen a lot of Hunt/Autry at the one technique so we really don’t need any big fatties up front. Not that Grover Stewart is particularly effective but I’m content with him being the only conventional NT going into next year.
I want to be ten deep going into next year. Figuring Sheard, Lewis, Turay, Muhammad, Autry, Hunt, and Stewart (not a lock) as putting us at 7/10, that leaves a little work. I want to see two linemen signed this offseason and no expense spared. Grady Jarrett and Demarcus Lawrence are the signing of my dreams but that’s never gonna happen. Jarrett will be tagged if they can’t come to an agreement. The only reason Lawrence would be available is because he was tagged last year and it’d be more expensive. Anyway after them there is a list of, in my opinion, really solid linemen. My order of preference for DE would be; Clowney, Trey Flowers, Frank Clark, Brandon Graham, Preston Smith, Dee Ford, Za’Darius Smith, Shaq Barrett, and Ziggy Ansah.
On the inside there’s less quantity but someone will be available. I’m all for going in on Suh this offseason. He’s had a down year by his standards and he’s getting on in age so we wouldn’t have to go crazy the way Miami did to pay him a few years ago. He got 14 million this year for the Rams and I’m guessing he’ll be around 12 million to land him for next year. I don’t think his fall has been as pronounced as it’s made out to be either. Playing next to Donald, Suh was pidgeonholed into the one technique a lot so he could be doubled by the center/guard and give Donald more one on ones. Put Suh back to playing three technique, and I think we get the same player he was two years ago. A scheme change could be just what he needs, as well as a culture change. Come back to the humble Midwest but don’t bring all the unnecessary roughness penalties with you.
If Suh doesn’t pan out I’d settle for any of the following; Sheldon Richardson, Muhammad Wilkerson, Mario Edwards, Rodney Gunter, or Brent Urban.
3. Bring in a corner. Number one on my list is Bryce Callahan out of Chicago. He’s pretty much a prototype for the kind of corner Ballard and Eberflus want. He’s had a great season with the Bears. I do have two reservations about him though. Is he a one hit wonder? Was he made to look better than he is by all the talent around him? If he’s going into the offseason asking for crazy money I’m passing. I’d offer him what Bouye got, 13 million a year. If we can’t get him we’ll have to bring in a couple low risk prospects like Neiko Thorpe and Kayvon Webster.
4. LB depth. Jordan Hicks is very underrated for his coverage. He’s one of the best in the league at it from a linebacker perspective. I know a lot of people really like Anthony Walker, but he’s really just a guy and he’s no cover LB. we need to stop letting offenses move the ball so easily with little dump off passes to the back.
5. WR. I’d like to see them bring in Adam Humphries from the Bucs. He quietly had a good season on a bad team with a revolving door at QB. I’d like to see a battle between him, Pascal, Cain, and Fountain for the WR3 spot in camp.

In the wintery tundra of Kansas City, I’m picking whichever team has more Estonian giants on their defensive line. Not sure which team that might be but it seems like a smart bet.

Am I the only one who prefers Turay over Lewis if I had to pick one? It seems like Turay got in the coach’s doghouse or something with his lack of snaps but I thought he looked good. I’d rather have him against Patty Mayonnaise this weekend for his pass rush ability.

It's the same calculus for me with Nelson. Love the player, I just don't think the position warrants that high of a pick. I'm definitely not complaining about the pick, I made my peace with it long before the draft, but it doesn't represent maximum value. And we still don't have a great pass rusher, and probably don't have a direct path to one.
The FA edge class is as good as I've seen it in years. This is the offseason to grab one. Obviously they won't all hit free agency, but if even it's like 25%, Ballard should be able to get one unless he wants to go super moneyball. I know, I know, we want to build our own, let's do that and also take someone else's while we can.
Clowney, Ford, Graham, Flowers, Lawrence, Clark....one of those guys is going to be available and we can afford him. I also wouldn't be opposed to signing Suh for a one year mercenary deal next year.

How about us who felt that picking a guard that high in the draft wasn't maximizing value? I never doubted that Nelson would be good; his play and success are not surprising, as I called him the safest player in the draft.
But I still don't think that taking an interior lineman is max value, and him being All Pro doesn't prove me wrong. I'd rather have a great pass rusher and a pretty good LG than a great LG and mediocre pass rushers.

FTR I was all on board for the Q Express, but back in 2016 a lot of people wanted and were happy that Grigson drafted Kelly in the first, but I was and still am lukewarm about him because I didn't like the value of drafting a center in the first round. At the time I wanted either Chris Jones or William Jackson III. I think most people would have disagreed had we went Jones and even now they'd still probably say 'But we have our franchise center! He handles the ball every snap!' Can't say I agree with you on Q, he's just a monster, but I'm with you 100% on maximizing your value on your first round picks.
Plus you know the nature of this board (and the internet), everything is always black and white. There's no room for nuance.

I'm concerned that if we get in a shootout (highly likely), Luck will make one of his bonehead gunslinger throws like the pick six against the Titans. That's the one thing about him that I wish he could improve but I think it's just his nature, he'll play like the GOAT for 95% of his throws and then he'll take one that makes you question if Nathan Peterman is wearing a Luck suit.
I think this game goes a LOT like the Chiefs/Rams game; lots of offense but there will be a couple turnovers from both teams. If we win the turnover battle, I think we win.

You can control the clock if you grind out long drives. I’m normally an ‘air it out’ type, but Saturday I want to see the Indianapolis House of Pancakes serving up double stacks all night in the run game. Run it down their throats all night. It’s the smart thing to do because it gives the defense time to catch their breath, and they’ll need to against this high flying Chiefs offense.

I really hope Eberflus just mixes up our coverages a lot. As it’s been said, Mahomes can pick apart the Cover 2 all day, especially with time in the pocket. I’m hoping to see a little more man coverage this weekend with a single high Hooker. Have Kenny Moore cover Hill, fits him best out of all the guys. I’d put Wilson in at Safety to cover Kelce every now and then in man. Desir and whoever else we roll out can get their other two guys.
I’d also caution against throwing too many blitzes at him. He’s great at making uncomfortable throws. I’d seriously bring three man rushes on like 20% of his drop backs. Sheard, Hunt, and Autry have got to have monster days for us. Their line is strong on the outside but weak on the inside. All three guys have played some pretty decent snaps for us inside so I’m expecting that trend to continue. When we do blitz, I want to see late blitzes from Maniac. Don’t show the blitz, have him fake dropping back and then blindside him. If he thinks the blitzes are coming they’ll run a screen as they’re about the best screen running team out there.
Just mix up coverages a lot. That’s all I ask for Eberflus. Even though Football Steph Curry is basically a rookie, the dude can read a defense. We aren’t playing Dak Prescott or Deshaun Watson who get by on the skin of their teeth with athleticism. Football Steph Curry is not afraid to throw bombs, but he’s also not such an impatient gunslinger to not take what’s given to him either.
Colts/Chiefs playoff matches are gonna be in store for the next decade. Let’s make them feel the way we feel about that Ugg boot, visor wearing, snake for an OC having team on the east coast.

He had a bad first couple of games playing with a club on his hand, then he had to sit a couple weeks to heal, came back and took a few weeks to get going but once he did he was a damn stud.
