  1. As always, our ones played one maybe two series against Seattle (can't remember for sure), but Seattle's #1 offense played the entire half.  Not enough time to adjust to the noise and make a run for it.  Not worried about it.  Also, because we play them in week 2 we showed absolutely no cards.  All 3 preseason games, Rivers has been incredible % and yardage.  15 of 18 for the preseason.  Today was 9 for 10 for 85 yards.  The one incompletion was to TE LaDarius Green and was dropped.

Our D looked solid against the ones of SF, really solid.  Lots of pressure on the QB and tight coverage by the secondary.  Much better tacking than we've seen in a long time.

As to our 3 games with Denver last year - the playoff game darn near ended up a different outcome until we had I think 5 starters injured in the 3rd qtr.  We were paper thin and that was enough to derail our changes.  However, had we won that game, we were so thin I couldn't imagine the SB game ending up much differently than it did.

I don't think we win the division unless the Broncos continue to be decimated with injuries and we escape the bug.  We're still a year away from being fully rebuilt to depth.  Next year we're out of salary cap heck.

  2. Kellen Clemmons is our new backup QB and he's been outstanding.  I hope we never have to see him in a real game unless the score's a blow out, but he's cool in the pocket, has an accurate arm, is mobile and there's little appreciable fall off when he's at the helm.

  3. The problem with these rotations is that the opposing teams OC can feed off of this. Seeing one of the leagues premiere pass rushers out on 3rd and 2 just lights up a play callers eyes. We did that here with him his last few years here, and when the opposing team saw him out, they took advantage.

IF there is a drop off in your rotation, yes.  However, we have Jarret Johnson and Melvin Ingram in that rotation and they are beasts.  Dwight took a pay cut this year to hang in there and has come to camp fresh and with hunger.  I hope I can point back to this at the end of the year and have been correct - however, we all know it can go wrong all too quickly when you get up there.

  4. It has been so nice to see Dwight with a gigantic smile from ear-to-ear each time he's interviewed this TC.  For those that have expressed your appreciation for him as a player and former Colt:

"For a player with Pro Football Hall of Fame credentials, Dwight Freeneyis generating surprisingly scant NFL buzz while making a return from a torn quadriceps.

That’s going to change once more folks start seeing how good he looks.

Just ask San Diego Chargers left tackle King Dunlap. He dropped into position to block Freeney in a pass rush drill on the second day of training camp practices. The outside linebacker fired off the line of scrimmage, dipped, made a trademark spin move and left the much larger Dunlap in the dust as Freeney’s defensive teammates burst into cheers.

“He tends to do that to people,” Chargers safety Eric Weddle said with a smile.

Entering his 13th season, Freeney is sixth among all active players in sacks with 108. He also was a member of the league’s all-decade team for the 2000s while playing for Indianapolis.

But Freeney’s NFL future was cast in doubt last year when his quadriceps ripped four games into the 2013 season. The Chargers had signed Freeney to a two-year, $8.75 million contract after a new Colts regime allowed one of that franchise’s most storied players to leave as a free agent. If he couldn’t recover and display the same explosiveness at age 34, Freeney wouldn’t be back with San Diego in 2014.

The Chargers, though, never lost faith in Freeney. Proof of that came during San Diego’s playoff run. Most teams don’t travel with injured players who aren’t part of their plans. Freeney made the trip to postseason games at Cincinnati and Denver..."  Article continues at link http://www.foxsports.com/nfl/story/late-rush-chargers-counting-on-the-old-dwight-freeney-not-an-old-dwight-freeney-072814

  5. GFT,

Your 1st line was hilarious BTW!   :funny:  lmao  After what the Chargers achieved this past season, there is no sneaking up on anybody this year I'm afraid.

Here's an idea: Make the team wear their powder blue throw back jerseys all year long because they play "lights out" [shawne Merriman joke] in those uniforms & I've never seen em lose wearing those colors.

Can you say "powder blue" SB or bust?"  :hat:

So, just to be clear, the more derogatory & unflattering we are about the Chargers the better they will play? I just wanna know what the winning San Diego formula is. Just Kidding!

I don't know what I want, LOL!  But it makes me nervous when people start talking up our boys - past history is good press = bad results for the season.  But then we have better character players now, fingers crossed!

By the way, Freeney was back today and looking great.  He was almost giggling about the defensive players Tom Telesco picked up in the off season and commented that that wasn't exactly the case at Indy where the offensive side got most of the attention.

  6. Darn it you guys, QUIT talking nice about my Chargers - ignore them, there's nothing to see here ;-)

Last year we had some good players with some gaping holes and managed to pull it out by playing as a team.  We were paper thin with no depth.  Our offensive line had something like 17 different configurations that played over the season and still protected Rivers finishing 4th I believe over all in sack prevention.  Considering we started the year with no proven LT and a rookie RT... not bad.

This year we're deeper in almost every postion and especially at cornerback where we previously flat out sucked.  We've upgraded a lot of our positional back ups and that can be all the difference in the world.  Thank you Tom Telesco.

We have the toughest schedule I've seen in years with us playing the NFC West - yikes.  But if we make it through we'll be more than ready for the playoffs.  Making the playoffs playing crappy teams doesn't help you in the long run.

I'm no good at predicting other teams' play so I'll just leave off with I'm excited for this year and hope most teams over look us or underestimate us.

  7. DB played well...you cant 'First Take' it away with a theory...

Brown started on a playoff team last year...but he'll come off the bench if they ask..

One thing about him....He'll do what they ask and he wont complain about it..

..and he's still never lost a fumble.

That last line is my favorite thing about him... Ryan Mathews only had 2 fumbles/1 lost last year so he got a handle on the give away issue, but since LT left/retired we have had a string of extremely unfortunately timed fumbles.  Especially around the 2 yard line.

I kept telling my fellow fans to really enjoy LT's ball security, that we'd never see the likes of it again!  At least for a very long time...

  8. Maybe I'm being biased, but Matthews has never impressed me.

You are (being biased).  Ryan has worked hard and become a very tough runner who rarely goes down on first, or even second contact.  He routinely drags several guys and gets extra yards.  I think I saw a stat yesterday that in situations where 1 yard is needed, Mathews' average is 3.5.

I haven't seen enough of Donald Brown to comment with any authority.

  9. The intent is running back by committee, keeping Ryan fresh for potential playoffs and shaking things up with a no huddle offense.  Keep people guessing.  Having guys who can run and who can catch out of the backfield.  Fun!

  10. If Matthews is not retained after this year (I think this is his last year on his contract)  then the Chargers may view Brown as the guy to replace him.

I don't see him as a #1....   but they might.

And remember, their GM, Telesco,  came from Indy and knows Brown well.

The Chargers are getting into position in case they don't retain him.  I read today that this coming draft is a very strong RB draft. I like Ryan, but he just might end up being expendable.

  11. Ryan's early years issues were likely attributed to pumping too much iron - he bulked up too much, lost flexibility and had some very strange injuries.  He came into camp lighter last year and changed his entire workout routine.  It made a huge difference as his numbers and health showed.

I believe his late season issue was a high ankle sprain. which can happen in a game no matter your shape, strength or health.

  12. I wouldn't read too much into anything that's said at this point.  Why would the Chargers tell everyone what to really expect?  Our offensive line is so much better now at run blocking that could change a lot of things about how well Donald runs.

We're just delighted to have him.  He's a great upgrade for us at the position from last year.  When Ryan Mathews was injured in the playoffs we were done.

  13. ALWAYS hate to cut a first rounder - but everything Superman said is right.  For another team without the salary cap issues we have he could turn out to be a good pick up.  Not a lot of risk to bring him into camp and see what he has.
