any chance we get a compensatory pick for him?

As of now, yes, but it's highly unlikely that Colts wouldn't be signing multiple players between now and early May, when the cut off date for signing players that count in comp pick pool is.

Its also a bit weird that OAK only gave him one year.  When seemingly unexplained stuff like this happens, you wonder if there aren't things circulating under the surface.  Like a possible suspension coming or something.

I guess there's concern by teams that as Melvin turns 29 this year and hasn't had good season until now and it was cut short by an injury.

He might have gotten longer term offers but wasn't happy with the money so he's banking on himself on a 1 yr deal.

Love the old Jordy (5 years ago)...not this old Jordy. To me he reminds me of a free agent we went out and got during the last regime. Andre Johnson.....can't separate anymore...great guy...just done. If they don't think Aaron Rodgers can still get him the ball do we really want Andrew trying to fit it in there. Just my opinion.

Yeah this. Can't separate anymore. He could be useful as a slot guy, basically using his size and reach to outmuscle DBs but that's about it. I think there are better options out there.

Seems like the Steelers have no 4th round pick so I'm done with them. Here's the picks I made:

Round 1, pick 28 Leighton Vander Esch, ILB, Boise State

Round 2, pick 60 Mike Hughes, CB, UCF

Round 3, pick 92 Jordan Whitehead, S, Pittsburg

I think I got good value and addressed some needs on D in the process.

    Thoughts or comments?

I really like your first two picks.. I wanted Hughes badly myself.

The Dead Cap hit after 2 years is a whopping 17.7 Mill.    After 3 years it's 8.4 Mill  and after 4 years it's still 5.6 Mill.

    http://www.spotrac.com/nfl/kansas-city-chiefs/anthony-hitchens-14530/

It appears Hitchens and KC are married for at least 4 of the 5 years.    (Even the 5th year dead cap is 2.8 MIll)     This does NOT appear to be team friendly.

By the way,   read a report on ESPN,  says Hitchens graded out very average when he was on the field compared to when he was off.     Almost no change in the Dallas defense.    The Dallas Linebacker who impacted the most,  was Sean Lee.    The ESPN read is for the amount of money the Chiefs are paying,  they won't get much bang for their buck.

17.7M dead cap after year one. 8.4M after year two. 5.6M after year three.

It's basically 2 year, 21.5M deal (which is expensive for LB like Hitchens and not team friendly) and then team options of 8.5M, 6.5M and 8.5M for years 3, 4 and 5, respectively. Or maybe 3 year 30M would be better description since his dead cap would be 8.4M and cap hit 11.3M for year 3. Unless he's complete liability, he'll probably be there for at least 3 years.

Also, Colts and Chiefs use different contract structure. Colts haven't given out signing bonuses to FAs the past 2 years. Chiefs use SB. Hitchens got whopping 14 million signing bonus. For the Colts to match that deal using the structure they've used the past 2 years, they'd have needed to give out a deal that averages 10 or more millions per year.

Been reading that he's a good player and versatile....wonder how he rated in the last year or 2?

probably a big upgrade over Vujn.

    8. Ryan Jensen, Baltimore Ravens

    Pass Protection: 16/25
    Run Block: 18/25
    Power: 17/20
    Agility: 15/20
    Position Value: 6/10
    Overall Grade: 72/100

Ryan Jensen had a fantastic season. The Colorado State-Pueblo alum has improved in each of the five seasons he's been in the league and has become a vital cog in the Baltimore Ravens' creative run game. Jensen's schematic importance in what they want to do on the ground cannot be overstated, as he's become the catalyst inside.

Jensen has fantastic tools for playing center. He gets in his stance in a flash after snapping the ball, engages with great leverage, is mobile to and through the second level, and has the toughness and attitude to take a defender down with a cockroach block from time to time. Baltimore's 27th-ranked offense was severely limited in 2017, but none of that was Jensen's fault.

they have to spend 90% over 4 years.  Right now, we're sitting at 86.6 % spent over the last 4 years.  Meaning that of the 72 million we have left, he only needs to 2.45 million to meet that

Correct, except it's not last 4 years, it's over 4-yr period that is 2017-2020. Previous 4-year period was 2013-2016. 2011 and 2012 league-wide teams were required to spent 99% of the cap.

Wow... Reading all these posts makes me want to go to the casino again, however, I'd probably go on tilt and lose $1,000. Ballard is obviously not very adept in FA. We have so much cap space, there's no reason not to offer more as we have to spend 89% of our cap space. Feel like a Tampa Rays Fan here that doesn't want to spend any money. Already depressed about FA.

That 89% rule applies for 4-year period (2017-2020), not for any single year. And it's cash spending, not cap. They can spend as little as they want this year, as long as they spend 89% of the salary caps between '17-'20.

But we as we really don't have enough talent on our roster from '15 and '16 drafts, it pretty much means that CB has to start spending money on FAs sooner or later.

Osmele is the only guard to get that kind of money... can you imagine what Zach Martin is going to get?? He just became unaffordable for the Cowboys with this contract.  But I disagree about the guard market exploding.  Osmele is the only one to get that kind of contract.

Kevin Zeitler, Trai Turner and Gabe Jackson all have average salaries of 11M or more. Decastro and Kyle Long are at even 10M.

And yes, waking up to these news will probably make Zack Martin and his agent very happy.

How do the jags continue to have money to spend? They just purged free agency last year....o well they still got good ol Blake behind center in a big game

They are going to have their cap crunch too. But they can delay it until 2020, so they have a 2 year window. Ngakoue, Jack and Fowler are FAs that year. That's when they will start losing key players because they can't afford them, at latest. What remains to be seen which players they will lose and how they can replace them through the draft.

Until this year, they had top 5 picks from 2013 to 2017. And in 2012 they had #7 pick but traded up to top 5. Going to be a lot harder to keep accumulating talent when the first pick isn't in the top 5.

And they did lose A-Rob and possibly Lee. They prioritized Norwell over them.

That's a crazy bad trade for the Bengals. Moving back 9 places for an average, injury prone tackle on a $9.5 million a year contract. The Bills I'm sure were only looking to get his big wage of their books, the Bengals fifth round conditional pick would have probably done it. At 12th overall would have given them Mike McGlinchey probably.

He's had health issues the past two seasons but he's not average. He's very good when healthy.

The difference in draft pick value is about #51 pick. That I agree is relatively high in comparison to recent trades.
