I don’t think our defense is as bad as some think. What the defense needs is more experience in the secondary and a few meaningful additions. The scheme works. If you have experienced and good players it doesn’t really matter if the other team knows how you are going to play them. They have to have better players who will outperform yours. Gus’s system worked in Seattle because he had the players who could execute it. Ballard has to get him the players. For me teams who play man give the advantage to the offense. The rules are designed to give the advantage to the offense. So that’s why most teams play zone. There are only a handful of good to elite shutdown corners but the league is loaded with good to excellent receivers. Zone works but you need the experienced players who can execute and players who can apply pressure which leads to sacks and turnovers. If you have a good front four rotation you shouldn’t have to blitz often imo. They will get the job done.

Ballard signaled he is going to be much more aggressive this offseason in acquiring talent. He knows he has the financial wherewithal to do so. People are way overestimating the strength of our schedule. Let’s see what these teams look like after the offseason. We are going to be adding talent not losing talent like many of our opponents. I think 10 is the floor actually.

Which NFL Coach is on the "HOTTEST HOT SEAT"?
richard pallo replied to sb41champs's topic in NFL General
Coaches get fired all the time even after making the playoffs. The expectation in Buffalo and around the league is that this was their year to win the Super Bowl. At least go the AFC championship. He’s taken the team to the playoffs multiple years in a row. This year he barely achieved 10 wins and was very lucky he made it. So far he has not won a Super Bowl. I think he’s fired if he loses Sunday. We shall see. -
I listened to Ballard yesterday and he said He decided to go young in the secondary last year. He owned up to that. He said he saw progress on the DL as well. I think it’s the right decision to let him finish his contract. We know there will be some changes to the defense and the younger guys should improve. So I can see Steichen and Ballard wanting him back. I think it’s safe to say they will be expecting another step up for the defense and if it’s not there Gus will be replaced.

Raiders request interview Colts assistant GM Ed Dodds

Also if I remember correctly Harbaugh likes Dodds. There is a prior connection I believe. -

Dodds is definitely interested in this job. Last year he declined interviews. I guess we’ll see what happens. -

If Bills lose Sunday McDermott is gone I think. -

I don’t consider the TE position as a position I would consider explosive. That’s my view. At pick 15 if I’m looking for an explosive player it’s WR for me. -

I agree on McKinney I hope he’s the target. I want Blackmon back at SS. This was his first year back at SS and he had a great year. Cross didn’t even see the field until the very end of the year. He is still young and developing. So I think we know Ballard rewards his own that perform. That’s why I think Blackmon comes back. Another FS that could be obtained in a trade is Budda Baker. He would be a real long shot to obtain. He would likely cost a 2nd round pick and a reworked contract. When Ballard mentioned Eraser in describing the position the first player I thought of was Bob Sanders. The second was Baker. -

I agree and he did allude to acquiring a FS in FA. As I said in an earlier post I think a player to keep an eye on would be Xavier McKinney currently with the Giants. A veteran upgrade there would make a huge improvement to our defense imo. -

Ballard also said that since we don’t have an expensive quarterback to pay we can be as aggressive as we need to be in FA. That signals to me that if there is a FA they want they will be as aggressive as they need to be to get the player. Now he won’t overpay but I think he will pay market value and we will aggressively compete with other teams for the player. -

I don’t think we will. TE’s are not considered explosive players. I don’t consider any of the TE’s we’ve drafted the last two years as explosive. They are options in an offense that can contribute. Ballard appears to like Mallory a lot. He should be able to contribute. Explosive players are supposed to explode and not get caught from behind. That’s the job of a WR1 and hopefully 2 and 3. -

I’m hearing WR. When I hear him say explosive, TE is not the first position I think of. Lol. Interesting enough he used the word “Eraser” when describing the need at the FS position. Bob Sanders nickname. I think that’s going to be another targeted position. -

I think FS and WR are high up in priority. I think a great addition at FS would be FA Xavier McKinney from the Giants. Great coverage guy and a sure tackler. Only 24. Now that they will be having a new DC we might have a chance and he might want to go to a contender. -

I definitely felt this way too. I think he’s going to try and add another explosive playmaker for AR. -

I interpreted it to be the WR market in general. -

When talking about the WR market he mentioned the price of gas for your car. He said if the price of gas is $4.00 a gallon then that’s the market and if you need gas you’re going to pay that. He used that analogy when describing the WR market. So for me if he’s using that to reference the WR market then he knows he has to pay. It is what it is. -

His comment on paying for a WR suggests to me a veteran WR is going to be brought in. Could be the big acquisition of the off season. Other than resigning Moore I think we’re riding with our current corners. But I do think the next position group to get a major veteran upgrade is Safety. I’m expecting Moore, Blackmon, Pittman, Grover, Lewis and Rigo to return. I think Moss departs along with Minschew because I think some team will pay him more than the Colts. -

You just let him play out the contract and see where he is next year. More than half of the 1st round picks don’t get the option picked up. Not a good omen for the player but it is what it is. -
Bills and Dolphins will not be very tough games. They are both at the bottom of the league with over 40m in negative cap space each. They are going to have a lot of player turnover losing good players. The Bills window is most likely closed after this year. I see our roster getting stronger in the off season the Bills and Dolphins getting weaker. The only very tough games I see are the Packers and Lions and Texans of course.
