  1. How about pausing the sarcasm long enough to notice that the Colts brought in four vet free agents this year, and it's hardly the first time. They just do it intelligently based on salary cap space.

Many people make it sound as if the Colts are being cheap, when actually they are at the cap every year. You can only spend so much - the question is where are you going to spend it? Do you like Manning, Adaii, Clark, Wayne, Freeney, Mathis, etal? Sign someone else, and lose the Colt of your choice. The grass isn't always greener.

By the time someone reaches free agency they have usually peaked athletically, and football players often have very short careers. If you are lucky they will maintain that level for a few years, but often they drop like a stone - or don't fit into the new teams scheme. Yet they are looking for a lifetime payoff based on the benefit they have already provided to their old team when their salary was a bargain. Buying into that is a recipe for disaster, as evidenced by teams like the Redskins. They have an utterly moronic front office. The Colts have a terrific front office. I'm constantly baffled by those who can't recognize the difference.

I agree with most everything you've said in this thread, and agree totally with your overall reasoning.

HOWEVER, you'll never get this across to most of us, as we've declared to begin the off season weeks ago, and the 'glass empty' attitude seems to be en vogue.

Obviously, everything's wrong, everyone must pay, and it all needs to be corrected by the next game (or at least by the end of the season).

Fire the entire coaching staff, the front office, and break the fingers of the owner. Justin Snow is the only irreplaceable man on the team.

Start all over with Luck, and we'll do the same thing all over again for the next decade.

I still wonder what team we would have rather been over the past 12 (or so) years, and how many fan bases would have traded places with us over the same time period.

Yup, losing stinks. It happens. It's happening.

If PM comes back to old form next year, we'll be O.K. again.

Changes will be made, as time and money allows, and we'll see where we are next year, and going forward.

  2. I think because they don't use twitter or they think twitter is a waste of time or they think his style of tweeting is not appropriate.

All fall into the category of how they would do it if they were Jim, I think

BTW, right now on colts.com we're getting a lot of people telling us to stop updating and win some games.

FYI, web staff have nothing to do with the games.......just throwing that out there. :slaphead:

    Oh, so it's your fault.

  3. The Colts and Peyton knew this injury was a lot more serious than they let on. Why would he sign a one year contract with a four year extension otherwise. This makes the front office even more guilty of not finding a suitable replacement in time.

If this were a coporation Bill and his son would have been fired long ago.

Umm, you think Irsay wasn't aware?

Also, thought I'd heard that we approached Hasselbeck, but he'd agree with the Titans.

Who else was available? Brett Favre?

  4. This is not a 1 man team, that's complete crap!

This teams problem is doesn't even have a decent QB, which leads to quick 3 and outs, which leads to the defense being on the field too long, which leads to alot of losses.

That's something the talking heads forget, instead they'd rather just label it a 1man team because its more sensational.

On the chance this was directed at my comments, I don't believe the Colts are a one man team. I only believe that the offense was built to fit, and take advantage of, Peyton's talents, and the defense was built to attack a opponents offense who's down a couple of scores, and needs to pass.

I agree with you regarding the talking heads. I watch them but don't take any of them seriously. They typically have opposing views only because everyone agreeing on something is not entertaining enough for the masses. It's scripted, and someone has to take the pro side, while the other has to take the con side. Reality be darned.

Edit: Again with 'darned'. Boy does that sound corny. Well, so does 'corny' I guess.

  5. In regards to Polian, he made a great choice in drafting Peyton manning and he has surrounded him with some talent. My point was that Peyton Manning was the biggest peice of this puzzle and has had to do way too much for this team to win consistantly.

Had Polian done a better job of drafting over the past few years, this wouldn't be the case. I will give him some credit that he made some good draft choices, however, when he has missed, it has really cost us. For example, he drafted Donald Brown who hasn't performed well for the Colts. He may be a good player for some other teams that employ different blocking schemes, but largely, he hasn't contributed to our team's success. This can also be said about Hughes, and a few others. This is a great loss of petential for us. We could've used those picks on players who could contribute to the team, especially on defense, and we could have avoided having such a void in our secondary.

With all of these missed draft picks and the team slowly declining on talent, the Colts have continuously relied on Manning to carry them to the playoffs, which he has.

To answer your question, I am a Colts fan and would not trade the past 12-13 years, and would not want to be like other teams, but would like to point out that as good as we were, we could have been better, and am frustrated that we are in a decline that was avoidable.

Peyton is the centerpiece. The entire team, and therefore scheme, was built with his talents in mind. Eventually talents diminish, and with the structure of this team, and the thought that this offensive scheme could only be run efficiently with Peyton's talents, when he comes to the end of his career there needs to be a scheme change. Also note that the defense was constructed off of Peyton's effectiveness as well.

Now, Peyton just signs what we all believed to be his final contract, and had no reason to believe he wouldn't be effective for a few years yet. Suddenly, everyone's taken by surprise, and he's out this year (perhaps longer). You're caught with your pants down, and no one could have predicted it. Bare in mind that it's not just Peyton this year. We've also been skeptical of Reggies talents, and this year it seems Dallas may be deteriorating. On defense, Freeney isn't getting any younger either.

I believe that the team was already in a slow mode to change philosophies preparing for the post Manning era, only based on drafting bigger players lately. Also picking up run stopping DEs this year was telling to me.

I can't deny that Brown could now be considered a mistake, but not that we took an RB when we did, but simply that he never turned into what they'd hoped. I'm beginning to believe the same of Hughes, but haven't completely given up on him yet. I don't see Gonzo as a bust. He was very good for us, then became injury prone, and is now perhaps in someone's doghouse (see Tryon).

Assuming Peyton does play a few years yet, I see this year as a picture of the future if schemes don't change before he's retired.

I can withstand one year like this.

  6. The premise is that the Colts were designed to take advantage of Peyton's abilities to do things no other QB is capable of.

Now that Peyton's out, the Colts are horrible. No kidding.

However, if this was such a terrible plan, then we should have traded Peyton years ago, never drafted him, to not taken advantage of what he can do.

Having said that, over the past 12-13 years, how many teams would you have rather we'd been than those Colts teams?

  7. Heard on nfl network that Cowher maybe getting that itch. I get that most of us fans could'nt run a nfl team. I think it is just that 95% of fans relize anyone could do a better job of coaching this team and are just tossing some proven nams out there. I have never claimed to be the smartest guy on the forum, but I am smart enough to no that when 100 people to 2 including people local and national think Coach (word loosly used here)Caldwell is very under qualified at his position, and you need not be an expert to see that.

During times like these, and during off seasons that don't follow a SB victory, there is one phrase that's important to remember....Vocal Minority

  8. mmm never know what can happen though, i thought we would turn it around against the titans too, but offensively didnt get it done.

but this is going to be our best chance for a win, a month at home, please end up 3-8. get some happy faces around here!

Yep, seems like the off season and we just lost the Superbowl to the Saints, doesn't it?

  9. By asking this question, you no nothing about sports whatsoever.

    Oh, I don't know.....

    Chuck Knoll

    Bud Grant

    Tom Landry

    Bill Walsh

    BB

These guys enjoyed a fair amount of success, and showed no emotions on the sidelines, or in press conferences.

  10. As far as demeanor is concerned, my blueprint is Mike Tomlin. No nonsense. No nonsense. Articulate. And if he ever gets good enough to make a movie about him, you already have an actor to play him.

    MikeTomlin_OmarEpps.jpg

    Will Farrell plays Big Ben.

  11. so do I, the writer raised the issue was it about Luck and his feelings

ยป We wonder if the plans that Polian and Manning have discussed include grooming Andrew Luck for a few years before passing the torch.

Has there ever been any indication of what Peyton plans on doing after his playing days are over?

Does he have any inklings of coaching?

  12. If they start him in week 14 lets say and we win out i will be ticked,at that point lock up the draft pick and get ready for next year.Do not win some meaningless games and cost us a shot at controlling the draft.

Hasn't history taught you that they won't start the starters at the end of the season unless everything's locked up?

  13. I would like to see a defensive minded coach come in. We have ours on offense...wink wink Peyton and Clyde... so defense is the priority. A Mike Zimmer, or Rob Ryan would be good. Jerry Gray is my personal favorite, but Zimmer and Ryan are more qualified. Gray is good because he has a pretty bad defense, except for 2 players, but they're in the middle of the league. They lost Babin, and Tulloch, two of their best, but they're still good, plus their offense is playing badly. He's a pretty good head coach, but would like to see Zimmer or Ryan. So instead of John Gruden who signed a 5 year deal with ESPN, we could get:

    Mike Zimmer

    Rob Ryan

    Jerry Gray

I was also impressed with the Saints OC, when he spoke after Sunday's game.

    Don't recall his name though.

I'm sure there's plenty of assistant coaches out there we just don't hear much about that would be good candidates.

  14. Okay if "winning" is the basis we go by, how much winning? Are we talking overall career, or do we go season by season? Great coaches have had bad seasons, and bad coaches have had great seasons...so if winning is what we go by, what type of winning?

My thought on this is that a bad stint does not darn you from being a good to great coach over your career.

Many people fail in their first attempt at a management position, then go on to figure it out, and flourish.

    BB being a great example.

So, for me, it's consistency over a career.

A bad start, or a speed bump don't ruin it for me. Just as the Colts losing this year hasn't ruined the past 12 for me.

Edit: Boy 'darn' sounds odd there. I feel like Gomer Pile all of a sudden.

  15. Personally, I think the most important things are:

    - Gaining the respect of your players

    - Good game management

    - Innovation within the confines of the talent available

    - I also believe an even temper is important, but there are some example where an over emotional coach has done well also.

Here are some things that aren't key to being a good coach:

    - Being emotional

    - Facial expressions

    - Reading message boards

    - Being entertaining in press conferences

  16. Well if want a "firey" guy what about Dennis Green?

Green? As long as he doesn't kick to Hester.

Ditka? No, we'd end up trading all our draft picks for the next couple of years to move up one spot to get Luck.

Gruden? Well, I guess if we're desperate for sound bites, O.K.

I prefer even tempered myself. Some emotion is fine, but not 'fiery'.

  17. My guy who's the vice-assistant president of the custodial divison said the colts has a secret formation where they perform this step sequence and the opposing is immediately hypnotized and runs into their endzone for a safety. Remember where you heard it first! Coyer is a genius! No wonder we kept him around so long, he had a secret weapon the world couldn't accept at the time.

Oh, I thought he was the vice-assistant to the president of the custodial division.

    That's different then.
