  1. As I said, "he was the assistant coach on the Green Bay Packers from 1992-99"

O.K., but what does that have to do with any influence on Favre?

At least Caldwell ACTUALLY WAS Manning's QB coach.

I'm not backing either. I just don't think Favre should be credited to Reid.

Also, though it could happen, I hear nothing that suggests Reid will be out in Philly, as you suggest.

Media speculates, and I'm sure Philly fans scream, but those two things don't equate to reality.

  2. Donovan McNabb, Kevin Kolb (that's debatable) and even helped turn Vick into a more efficient passer. Not to mention he was the assistant coach on the Green Bay Packers from 1992-99 (Favre). Jeff Garcia, AJ Feely (not spectacular but not awful.)

I thought Gruden was Favre's QB coach in GB, and you can have the others.

  3. This tread reminds me of something that Bill Bellichick said in A Football Life. He was showing some games that his team lost and/or got blown out and how they played with no emotion or energy. He basically said that not team is good enough to play that way with no emotion.

I agree with that, but do you see that of Bellichick?

It's not how the coach acts on the sidelines, or elsewhere.

It's how he inspires the team to play.

  4. I can't weigh in with an opinion on Lovie Smith but I suspect a lot of the anger was really directed at the OC, Mike Martz. Now that the Bears are on a roll, things appear to be quiet in Chicago.

Lovie's never been a favorite here in Chicago. Neither is their GM. But, when the team is winning, all's O.K. I think it's more to Lovie's demeanor though. I think they're still stuck in '85, and can't let go of Da Coach mentality.

  5. I know, you've been a fan for 40 years. yawn. This team stinks, and it's down to poor management. I see it on TV, you are correct. I watched the last 9 games and cringed. Your 'brain' comment was rather pathetic really. Do you know where you emotions are stored? Look, I know you are a 'company man' but you should not let it cloud your reasoning......if you think we are in good hand, that's fine. I however, dont.

Well, I know where women think our brains and emotions are stored, but that's a topic for the Misc Threads.

No one's right, and no one's wrong here, but don't let 0-9 cloud your reasoning.

0-9 so everyone must go and everything must change = emotions, not logic. Plain and simple.

  6. At this point I am seriously rooting for the Colts so we don't get the 1st pick and Luck

I have nothing against Luck, or the prospect of him being a Colt in the future, but I'm quite tired of him being made the focal point of the Colts season this year.

BTW, he's a redshirt Junior this year. Is there a guarantee he'd turning pro next year?

Sorry, I'm not a college eligibility major.

If he still has eligibility left, can Peyton still talk him into staying his senior year?

  7. You are correct. Very poor drafting, contract negotiations, player cuts, keeping players beyond their usefulness, incompetent game time decisions, non existing adjustments, watching week after week as out ST fail miserably, watch a pathetic defensive scheme flop time after time........need I go on?

Fire the Polians and Caldwell, and Coyer and ST guy. Stop the rot before we finally ruin Peyton's legacy, or Luck's future. The time is now. really.

All of these things are really easy to identify and correct from behind your computer, aren't they?

Isn't it great to be able to sit back and watch/judge from afar without any real knowledge of what's going on?

I can't sit here an tell you I think everything is rosy, but I can tell you that making judgement based only by staring at the bottom line can be quite risky, and isn't bright.

Peyton's legacy? Luck's future? You watch too much TV, and take it seriously.

  8. Well put.

The team is now paying the price for Bill Polian's dogged strategy of

    (1) Focusing most of the early round picks and cap money on offense while stocking the defense with less talented late rounders and undrafted rookies;

    (2) Expecting Peyton to build up leads in games and then relying on Freeney-Mathis and other quick but undersized defenders to protect that lead. This works against most teams, but NOT in low-scoring games against elite defenses like Steelers/Ravens/Jets or in shootouts with other high-scoring offenses like the Saints and Patriots;

    (3) Building the team almost exclusively through the draft and ignoring the top-tier and even middle-tier free agent talents. This 'draft-only' approach requires hitting on enough successful draft picks (at least half) just to replace the veteran players lost to free-agency, injuries, old age, and retirement, but when the Polians bust on early-round picks for several years in a row, they compound the team's weaknesses and accelerate the drop-off in talent.

Without Peyton playing Superman to cover up the team's many weaknesses, this entire Polian strategy becomes an epic failure. The franchise ends up with what we have now: An inept offense that struggles to get a first-down, much less score any points. A soft defense comprised of underweight D-linemen and undersized linebackers that can't stop anyone's running game. Short and small DBs that cannot outjump or outmuscle taller, stronger receivers in the passing game. As a result, the defense stays on the field way too long and inevitably gets worn down. Persistently awful special-teams squads year after year (largely cobbled together with undrafted scrubs and other teams' rejects) that give up far too many big plays to opponents while consistently putting the Colts offense in poor starting field position.

I think this team needs more than just an upgrade in player talent. It also needs upgrades in coaching talent, game-planning, draft-scouting , and team-bulding strategy. Whether or not these improvements will require drastic changes in the coaching staff and management personnel will ultimately be up to Jim Irsay. He needs to stop being a hands-off owner and step in to light a fire under his front-office that grew complacent riding on Peyton's cape for over a decade.

You can call it 'covering up' if you wish, but I disagree with your premise.

I believe that if we had a decent QB this year, we'd be at least a .500 club.

If we had a good QB we'd be about 10 wins again.

The QB play makes all the difference in success vs. failure with this team more than others.

The whole scheme was built on it.

Even with Manning, when the offense sputtered, the whole team suffered.

I don't think the whole team is as bad as some make it out to be.

However, I am starting to worry about some of our skill position players. Specifically, Wayne and Clark.

I'm worried, that their talent level is diminishing, and may need to be replaced, but I'm also aware that their production is based on the QB play, and I may be fooled right now.

  9. Now you have p... me off. First off any team in the nfl with peyton manning on the roster and healthy will make the playoffs. BP has relied on that for his quote great record. Take PM off of his team and he is exposed for what he is. If he is as good as you say he is, then why is this team the worst in history now. BP is only good if he has a PM. It certainly would seem so and for you to find fault with PM in the playoff games you apparently werent watching with the exception of one yr, our defense was decent and doing what they are suppose to do nothing more. For you to find fault with one player on the team and make a statement that he played subpar and that is the reason we lost is asinine. As for the real reason why we lost was that while we could get to the playoffs we as a team were not good enough to win. It doesnt just come down to a last play that PM didnt make or any play that one player didnt make that cost us. And for your stupid statement that PM was the reason for losing in college is even worse. You simply think that one player messing up is the reason those TN teams lost. I would suggest you talk to Cutclliff and find out the truth and that will be the team as a whole was not good enough. All I know is that last year PM who is so precious to BP career was beat up because of a weak OL. And maybe that is why he cant play this year. Well where is your great GM now. Losing his butt off. But according to you he is still a genius. And you my friend are totally full of horsefeathers. I dont really expect you to respond to this. You can quote all of the other teams in the nfl you want as to how they are doing, they seem to be doing just fine and they dont have a PM.

    1) p.... you off is not a difficult task.

    2) The Panthers and Bills didn't have PM

    3) Peyton's neck issue didn't come from being hit last year. From all I've heard it started with a hit against the Redskins some 5 years ago.

    4) I feel the same about Peyton's playoff performances. Not all of them, and not that I think he's been the sole reason for a playoff loss, but there have been plenty of playoff games where he was a non factor. Especially, in the first half of his career (to date) when he ignored the running game all too often.

  10. The packers drafted Rodgers in the FIRST round to be the QB of the Future because they knew Favre's time was almost done, hopefully like what we can do with Manning/ Luck...You really wanna say we should have picked a QB in the FIRST round prior to this season????

Believe it or not, some were suggesting this last spring, before anyone knew anything about Peyton's situation.

At the time, they were dead wrong, and I was happy to tell them so.

In hind sight, it would have served us well this year, but I'm not concerned only for this year. I'm hopeful PM will be back next year, Then we may have had a dilemma going forward. A good dilemma, but all the same.

  11. So we didn't draft a competent backup QB because it would hurt Peyton's feeling?!?! This mess just didn't happen overnight. We have always been a soft, pansy type team. Our division has been that tough over the years and we generally could outscore other teams in the regular season. What is really telling is what we did or didn't do in the playoffs. In the playoffs e e were going against teams that were better than our regular season competition and our failures (poor coaching, inferior players, etc.) came into play and we were exposed as a paper tiger. Now the same issues that cropped up in the postseason has shown up in the regular season. It is beyond comprehension for the Colts to have built their team so much around one player.

Are you looking at me and talking to someone else?

I'm having a difficult time seeing where I've brought up Peyton's feelings.

Fact is we should have had a competent back up QB all along. Sorgi may have been that guy for a while, but Painter doesn't seem to be.

So, how do you get a competent back up?

You draft one in later rounds, and hope to develop (see Curtis Painter, not working out).

You pick up a vet who doesn't mind sitting on the bench, which can be hard to come by.

With the rest of your post, I don't share your enthusiasm.

However, truth be told, I wasn't excited about the prospect of drafting Peyton leading up to that draft. I didn't want us to be the Marino Dolphins.

We did, it's gone as I expected (though we did win one SB, and it may not be over yet), I'm not sorry it happened (it's been great), and it's about to end.

To me, the coming few years should have been to build for the post Manning era. This year came by surprise, and too soon to have adjusted for it, based on where we've been recently.

Yep, things could be better right now, but they're not, and this too shall pass.

I can only trust that the right people will make the right decisions regarding management, coaching, players, etc. and that we'll be fine again one day (sooner rather than later). I suppose I may just have more patience than some, and don't view the present status of the team as an attack on me personally.

  12. to me this an example with what is wrong with today's fan. This whole what have you done for me lately is really depressing. Yes the Colts are having a down season. So what, it happens, we have been on top for the past decade, at some point all great teams have done years. Allow the mag't team that put together the dynasty to rebuild, it may take a season or two but they are at least allowed the opportunity to see if they can do it.

dn, I agree with you on this.

I'd like to believe that all of this emotional response is due to the suddenness of the situation.

I'd like to believe that we all knew there would be growing pains post Manning, and now we're slapped in the face with having been caught with our pants down prematurely.

Yes, all along we should have had a competent back up QB, just in case. But, those can be hard to come by when the starter never misses a game.

Most QBs would like to think they'd have the opportunity to play once in awhile.

  13. "Come on,ColtsNation,BUCK UP! Sure these r tough times,but tough times come..no one's ever won 115 games n a decade,like we have,NO ONE EVER!"---Jim Irsays tweet

I can't rely on my stellar job performance from the last 10 years....I have to prove it everyday....let's quit living in the past and right this sinking ship..

O.K., but you have one bad afternoon, and you're gone.

I'm less tolerant than you are.

    sarcasm off

  14. Hip hip hooray.... we are the greatest 0-9 team in NFL history. Bill Polian has done a marvelous job putting this 0-9 team together. I think everyone inside the organization should get a contract extension and a significant raise. Everything is perfect.

Umm, there is middle ground you know.

I don't represent Ruksak, but I believe that's what he had in mind.

  15. Agreed. In the real world, the question is always 'what have you done lately?

For the sake of argument, I'll stipulate that Bill was a true football god back in the day.

    Today - 0-9, heading for 1-15, +/- 1. Questions?

Oh, Oh, yes, I have a question.

If you were the GM, what would you have done in the situation posed by the OP?

  16. Agreed. In the real world, the question is always 'what have you done lately?

For the sake of argument, I'll stipulate that Bill was a true football god back in the day.

    Today - 0-9, heading for 1-15, +/- 1. Questions?

In response to the original question: What was supposed to take place during the lock out?

As far as you guy's hurt feeling sfor people not answering your 'tough' questions: Shouldn't you pretty much expect not to be answered when you bury your question in a thread about something else? Such as what's happened here?

  17. Was he a great coach that went 18-1 but got out coached in the superbowl? How does a great coach get outcoached by Tom Coughlin who at times has been almost fired due to issues with his players?

Since winning those 3 SB, how have the Pats done in the playoffs?

Is Bill a good "coach" or did he just get lucky a few times in the draft and have some really good/great players on his roster for a while?

My only point was that we're all susceptible to being fickle, and that overall I think he IS a very good coach. Not great. Not bad.

  18. This is an opinionated board. Everyone is entitled to his/her opinion. Just because you think you're being logical doesn't necessarily mean you are. There are vaild arguments to either side and no one on here is right. It is arrogant for you to think that just because you say something it's logical.

That makes me arrogant, as I think MAC is being logical also.

You're right there is no convincing the other side, regardless of what side you're on.

The problem is the whole 'everything must change, and it must change now so I'll feel better about myself' attitudes lately.

This isnt' the end of the world (that's next year :)).

I know there are things wrong with this team, and bad decisions have been made.

Right now we (fans) seem to be stuck on the whole 'one man's explanation is another man's excuse', and 'someone must pay now' stuff.

  19. Yes. How many yards did jacksonville run on us that year in the reg season...... hummmmmm. Jugernot

Tell me, who got us to the playoffs carrying the colts on his back? Ill give you 2 guesses.

Colts D has sucked for years, we all know it. Its NEVER been good.

Manning got us to the playoffs that year, then dropped off in the playoffs (for the most part), as he has most playoffs.

That year the D started out O.K, then dropped off completely near the end of the season, then got us to, and won the SB for us.

This whole thread is so over the top emotional and irrational, it's silly.

I don't over look issue on this team, but to me, the glaring issue is simply injuries, and QB play.

If our back up QB situation was stable I feel we'd be about .500 so far this year, maybe better.

Painter's issues seem to be his accuracy, and confidence.

If he had the former, he'd have the later, and we'd be O.K.

BTW, I thought I'd read where the Colts approached Hasselbeck early on in FA, but he balked for playing time, and ended up in TN.

So, we didn't ignore the situation. We did try.

  20. If Bill is such a great coach how come the 5-3 this season, have one of the worse defenses in the league and a mearly somewhat average offense? Could it be the Pats won tose 3 SB because Bill got lucky with some calls a very good kicker and a heck of a QB?

When the Pats went 18-1 Bill was a great coach.

When they won, what, 3 SBs in 4 years, Bill was a great coach.

This year he's a good coach.

If they win 14 games next year he'll be a great coach.

and on, and on, and on.

Fact of the matter is..... overall he's a really good coach.

You just can't win 'em all every year. See 2011 Colts.
