I get that and I don't think a trade down is unlikely. But, at 15 I'd be happy with any of:

    • Quinyon Mitchell, CB
    • Jared Verse, DE
    • Chop Robinson, DE
    • Jer'Zhan Newton, DT
    • Byron Murphy, DT
    • Brian Thomas Jr., WR

A trade back in the first could still get us:

    • Jackson Powers-Johnson, OC
    • Nate Wiggins, CB
    • Cooper DeJean, DB
    • Kool-Aid McKinstry, CB
    • Tyler Nubin, S
    • Kamren Kinchens, S
    • Adonai Mitchell, WR

Lots of possibilities in the first for us.

I like the idea of addressing skill positions in free agency and doubling down on DE/DT if the value is there. Verse and Jenkins being who I like the most.

When Purdue lost to Virginia that was a fluke and a shame because I believe if Purdue wins that, they win it all. After Purdue getting bounced in Round 1 last season, they have me not trusting them. Having said that, they should at least make the Final 4 this year, anything less will be a huge disappointment.

expectations are high. That’s for sure

I see things going down the same way. Another Elite 8 performance from Purdue at best. When push came to shove versus Ohio State, Purdue wilted. Maybe I saw one of their worst games but it didn't make a positive impression of Purdue at all on me. Michigan State handily handed Michigan, the same way Purdue did, so it told me more about Michigan being unimpressive than Purdue being impressive. Just my two cents.

it comes down to matchups in the tournament. They should have a chip on their shoulder from last season. They are also more complete than last year. Braden Smith is a legit point guard. Guards generally take over in the tournament. Last year it was, shut edey down, and problem solved. I don’t think it’s that simple this year.

the thing I give Purdue credit for is that they are going to get everyone’s best effort. That’s life at the top of the food chain. But then again, they did last year

We will have to agree to disagree here.  i think she could help a little uptick in viewership and then it will die down.   The WNBA has yet to show it can be a well attended league.  The Indiana Fever average 4000 fans a game.   That is similar to roller derby in Fort Wayne.   The Komets get over 7000 per game.  So the Fever (WNBA) is a little over half of minor league hockey.

    time will tell.

I wouldn’t bet against her. That’s for sure.

I depends.   If they were a no show to class, they should either get a failing grade that should follow them on their transcript or have to reimburse.  Also depends on the scholarship.  Some are offered and accept multi-tear scholarships.

that’s the case for most programs in America. Have you ever seen the essay the leaked from North Carolina.

They are not held to the same standards by the schools. It’s a joke.

Him re-signing with IND is the most likely outcome though. But if you had told me last year that we would be a week or so from the tag deadline and MPJ was still unsigned, I wouldn't have believed it. That's just not the trend with WRs...and not the trend with Colts players. And now he's publicly talking about exploring FA and not sacrificing career potential for comfort.

It just seems like there has to be some hesitation somewhere, whether that's the org. or MPJ's camp. But money typically clears that up.

I think it’s just him posturing. He knows they have leverage with the tag and that they want to keep him. So he’s playing the game to try and max that deal. At the end of the day, he’s still our number 1 and hasn’t realized his potential because of the qb situation. He has leverage in that we can’t afford to let him walk without a major plan to replace him. And that’s a huge risk that might not turn out in our favor. Ballard re-signs his own. It’s part of his fundamental belief. I think the hesitation has been his camp all along, or else he would have extended already. And he’s not wrong… the cap increase shows he understands the business.

My guess is part of it could be optics. Ballard and Steichen are both speaking at the Combine, so tagging MPJ now will just create a lot of questions when they are there to talk about the draft. If they haven't tagged him, they can more easily skirt around those questions.

That’s an interesting thought that I hadn’t considered. Watch them go answer questions and then immediately announce the tag. 😂

I hear you but I just don’t think he’s going anywhere. I’m more worried about Stewart than I am Pittman. Moore as well and I’m not the biggest Moore fan but we need him

You don’t think Moore is replaceable? You aren’t concerned about him dropping off in a year or two?

I’m not against re-signing him. I just wonder if it wouldn’t be better to find more versatile players in the secondary that we can stack on the roster. Finding a safety or two that can cover in that spot gives us more versatility.

I think if they franchise tag him, it's could be a bad sign if anything. That could mean that time to negotiate isn't the issue, as much as whether he wants to play here or somewhere else. And tagging him would ensure they can at least recoup some value via trade.

As for that value, I don't think you could get a R1 pick, but maybe a R2 pick and a R3 pick?

I don’t think he wants to play somewhere else. I think he wants to play the game his buddy Jonathan Taylor played to ensure he gets paid what he feels he deserves. He’s sitting in a pretty good spot…

I just don’t see him going anywhere.

I’d say he’s probably tired of playing with a new qb every year though, so a lot of his satisfaction looking forward (as far as playing goes) will depend on Richardson’s health and performance.

  11. I really want to see Purdue make a run. I couldn’t believe my eyes when they lost to Virginia in the elite eight a few years ago. They had that game in the bag and watched it slip out of their hands. They would have been favorites to win the whole thing that year. Carsen Edwards was not going to be slowed down, let alone stopped.

Regardless, what Matt Painter has done at Purdue is incredible. He just needs a final four on his resume. A national championship would be icing on the cake.

I also think players should have to pay their original school back the scholarship they accepted and used.

Why? Did they not fulfill their agreement to being an athlete for the year they were there? It’s not a 4 year contract. It’s year to year. The schools can stop it at any time. And the player previously could transfer at any time. The difference is now transfers don’t have to sit out a year. Which was always the case for graduate students. There were too many inconsistencies.

  13. It’s going to change the game in a way that none of us like, I can almost guarantee that. There is a reason some of the top coaches are retiring or looking to bolt to the nfl. I would too.

The entire thing is in the benefit of the player. And I don’t necessarily disagree with it, because they have been taken advantage of. When Texas a & m is allowed to profit a reported $500 million off one player in Johnny Football Manziel, and he doesn’t see a single dime of it, the system is completely broken. This isn’t about education, it’s about money. It always has been. So the sorry old “but they get a free education” argument just never held weight. These top athletes weren’t there for education. They were there to win and bring in the dollars.

I think she is a huge draw now because of the media attention because she is breaking records.  Once in the WNBA, it will be forgotten.   She will help increase attendance and viewership a bit but it'll die off.   The WNBA game is just not good.   I can't watch the NBA either but I root for the Pacers.

I don’t see it dying off. Like you said the wnba game is not good. But Caitlin Clark is unbelievable. People will watch her. Her game isn’t going to slow down in the pro’s. You can’t guard 26 feet lethal shooting. She’s going to average 5 or more 3pointers a night at the next level. And her scoring is just one aspect of her game. Like haliburton, she sees it all and can make passes you just don’t see at the women’s game.

not to mention these young gals have it figured out. The media isn’t creating them, they are using alternative forms of media for the attention they get. The old media is just capitalizing. They have brought a passion to the game, creating rivalries and drama. I’ve never seen it before in this game. Really not even at the men’s level. There is not much passion there anymore like there used to be. It’s too easy to be a crybaby and transfer out.

Do you really expect the Pacers to challenge for the NBA title?   I hope so, but think it is unlikely.   Like other small market NBA teams not in an ideal location, they can make the playoffs, get beat and have a poor draft spot.

I don't know about necessarily challenging for it this year. Pascal Siakam was a very big pickup, and he's only played 17 games with them. They were 3-6 in his first 9 games in Indy. They are 6-2 in the last eight. I think a player of his magnitude takes some time to get accustomed to. But I think where they are situated in the standings right now is far from where they should be and are more than capable of being. I think they can easily be a top 3 team in the Eastern Conference, which would certainly give them a good shot at competing for a title. While not a huge basketball fan, I have longed for the Pacers to be back in a title fight. I grew up watching Reggie and have vivid memories of the brawl in Detroit. Which I knew at the time was going to be detrimental to what was the best team in the league at that point, in my opinion. It's been said that they may have some serious players looking to come to Indy to pair with Siakam and Haliburton. They have a pretty young talented roster as it is.

I don't think Clark will make much of a change in the WNBA.   It'll still be a poorly attended league that most do not care much about.

I respectfully disagree. Women's college has been poorly attended, for better or worse for some time. Never has a single player been a draw like she has. Iowa just lost in Bloomington a few days ago, and it was a complete sell-out, 17k, with Vic Oladipo sitting courtside. If she declares (still debatable if she will) and she is Indianapolis, people will pay to watch her play. Maybe not sell-outs, but major increase in attendance. Opposing teams are currently experiencing 150% increase in attendance when she is in town. tv ratings sky high. 1.5 million plus. When they lost to Ohio State in overtime, it peaked at just under 4 million. Last year's national championship game? Up 100 plus % to almost 10 million viewers.

I think you grossly underestimate the draw. She's the steph curry of women's basketball.

I'm gonna be watching particularly the 2nd level WR's (Brian Thomas, Tony Franklin, Adonai Mitchell, Xavier Worthy), the DE's (Laiatu Latu, Jared Verse, Dallas Turner) and the top defensive backs (Terrion Arnold, Nate Wiggins, Kool-Aid McKinstry).  Particular focus on Safety Tyler Nubin and DB Cooper DeJean.  And, obviously, TE Brock Bowers.  Would like to see if T'Vondre Sweat will allow himself to be weighed at the combine.

    i like it.

Thomas, verse, Arnold, dejean and bowers are all on my microscope.

I agree.  Maybe they had turnover or a cut back in the department that produces the videos.  Who knows but last year was a real disappointment.  Hopefully this year is not a repeat of last year.

perhaps they kept their circle very small and didn’t want any chances of leaking their plan to draft AR at 4. It was a big draft, and could have gone south quickly if information got out.

sitting at 15 with a number of options is very different than sitting at 4 with your eye on a specific quarterback.

I feel the need to respond here.

Kwity Paye does not play the LEO.  He basically hasn’t since his rookie year, 2021.   Oh, he might play a handful of snaps at RDE on any given game,  but it’s a small handful.   The last two years Kwity’s  primary position has been the LDE.

After his rookie year, when he played primarily the LEO,  the front office noticed Kwity was slower off the ball at RDE.  And it was learned he had an eye condition which has been corrected by contacts.  But in 22 and 23, Paye’s primary position has been LDE.   There are stories about it on the internet.

In 22, the LEO was manned by Ngoukwe, Dayo and Lewis.   In 23, the LEO was staffed by Ebukam and Dayo.   To be sure, all of our DL have position versatility,  but Kwity has been mostly at LDE.

Turns out, I wrote about the RDE several times this year.   I wrote that Ebukam was getting the vast majority of snaps at the RDE, and Dayo was getting most of the rest.   And I said Dayo isn’t playing the RDE because it’s his best position, I don’t think it is.   Dayo is not fast or twitchy or even light footed.  His game is mostly power.  But he’s playing RDE because the Colts need him to when Ebukam gets a test.

There's more to say in this but I think the point has been made.  I’m sure there are websites that might confirm position played by snaps, but I don’t know what they are?    Anyone?

thanks for the clarification. My head must be in the gutter. I was under the impression they rotated depending on personnel. I didn’t think Dayo played Leo over Paye in situations.

I haven't heard of any hesitations on the Colts end, just from posters here. That doesn't mean they don't have any, just not something I've heard.

I'm not convinced we bring any kind of substantial upgrade at Edge. Will we bring in a body? More than likely, but I'm not seeing a big move there, as we sit here today. Definitely don't see a big FA signing there, if anything it would be a 1st round edge in the draft.(have #15 going CB/WR/DE right now), or a mid tier signing like Ekubam was.(that one turned out great)

Paye has improved every year so far, his arrow is pointing up. He isn't just a 1 trick pony either. He can get to the QB and set the edge.

    2021 - 15 games, 32 tackles, 4 sacks, 639 snaps

    2022 - 12 games, 45 tackles, 6 sacks, 546 snaps

    2023 - 16 games, 52 tackles, 8.5 sacks, 700 snaps

Some might argue 2022 was better than 2023 production wise, considering he missed 4 more games, but he has clearly been improving since he got here.

$4.3m cap hit this year and $13.4m next year if we pick up option. Pretty cheap to see if he can maximize his talents even more.

Can't see Ballard trying to replace him at this juncture, especially when he has been producing. I can see him bringing in another compliment there, but again, it's a little early. Things can change very fluidly in the next few weeks.

The new DL coach just needs to further unlock the potential.

im not really sure why I thought Ballard hesitated to answer that. I went back and watched and he did not. They asked him what he thought Kwity Paye, and he said that he was better. He was very good against the run. Has things to continue to work on, rushing the passer being one. But that he thought the defensive front played really well in ‘23. Then he was asked if he was picking up his 5th year option and immediately said “oh come on, you know I’m not answering that.” And laughed.

So I would say he unequivocally will pick it up. Because it would seem ludicrous not to. Can you imagine not picking it up at a discount on the position, and he goes out and turns into a superstar year 5 and 6? That’s a first round pick for us that has played well.

I like Paye, I still have high hopes for him. I’m really hopeful that the unit takes another jump next year, especially with a new position coach. Sometimes a tweak or two, different set of eyes/experience can unlock untapped potential.

Here is Paye's week by week grades.

    Paye - 74.1(27/106), 75.8(29/107), 69.8(43/112), 65.9(53/111), 65.9(51/114), 62.5(66/111), 63.2(63/109), 66.8(52/113), 67.4(51/107), 67.6(52/106), 68(48/106), 71.7(43/109), 73.1(38/108), 75.3(37/111), 75.6(38/113), 74.3(37/114), 74.3(37/114)

Started a little slow, but after missing week 5, he dropped to his lowest ranking  in week 6, but pretty much improved every week till week 17, when he had small drop off.

#37 is a pretty solid grade. High #2 DE grade. Ekubam was clearly our #1.(14/112)

correct me if I’m wrong, but the issue is that Paye plays like our second best end, when he’s in the most important position of Gus Bradley’s defense, the Leo position.

I think that’s the reason for the hesitation. They might be very well looking for an upgrade (maybe a massive one 🤷‍♂️).

I think going to a game is an experience unlike anything else. Watching at home does not give you the same experience. Watching at home is more convenient, but being at a live game is often more exciting; it has a different feel. You meet and spend time with other people (I'm a very social person and love meeting others). I try to go to at least one football game a year. I love it. I can focus on the game without interruptions from commercials and other distractions and without going back and forth from one channel to another.  JMO

I love going to Lucas Oil. Even in 2011, I couldn’t help but cheering for a win against Houston. Watching Reggie catch that winning touchdown was one of my most vivid memories. Knowing we might ruin the suck for luck campaign, but still unable to be sad about a win.

However, I can still be real enough to know that the 2022 season was not very enjoyable to spend an entire Sunday traveling to watch. I’m not sure I could do many seasons of that, especially owning season tickets. My personal situation has been hard to stay a consistent season ticket member, I’ve cut in and out, because I simply can’t make as many games as I want. I know I’m not alone in that regard. My whole point to the conversation was regarding ticket sales when teams string multiple losing seasons together. It becomes an economical nightmare. If you can’t find a buyer for the games you can’t go to as a season ticket holder, it’s a wash. If you don’t want to go, it’s a wash. So it’s a simple concept. They won’t renew like they typically do. For a team that has enjoyed waitlists for season tickets, watching those numbers drop (and likely significantly) would not be good. I don’t ever want to see Lucas Oil look like what the Panthers played in front of this season…
