Yes. They didn’t go 1-4, but 3 QBs went in the first 3 picks. Everyone was just way off on Levis. Idk if there’s a Levis this year, in terms of a guy who is going to get projected top 5, but actually go on day 2. Williams, Maye, Daniels, and McCarthy are all better prospects than Levis.

    first 4 picks…

that doesn’t mean it almost happened. I don’t see Ballard picking Levis at #4 (regardless of what Jim Irsay said he “thinks”) if the #1 non qb is on the board. They could have traded back, even within the top 10 and still easily landed Levis. I thought it was crazy to think they’d go 1-4 then and I still do. especially in last years draft or this years. Too much talent at the top. all the talk about liking will Levis was smoke and mirrors to detract from their ultimate target. I think that is obvious, and the fact he fell to 33 speaks volumes.

It still almost happened though. It ended being QBs at 1, 2, and 4. I could see a few trades happening and QBs going 1, 2, 3, and 4/5. Chargers are a prime trade down team IMO. It will depend on how FA goes. It was just announced that the Broncos are releasing Russell Wilson. He will join Tannehill, Cousins, and Minshew as intriguing FA QBs for teams looking for a veteran starter.

But the possibility of 4 QBs going early supports the idea that Ballard probably won’t trade up. Theres going to be some elite player that slips to 15.

    did it “almost happen” though?

I don't think Turner is a good scheme fit for the Colts, so I wouldn't see them drafting him in the first, let alone moving up for him. I'm unenthused about Verse; he can't bend, it's on his tape, and his three cone and shuttle times back that up. His explosives are good... Chop seems like the traits guy the Colts would love, but he's unrefined, and seems like a trade back target more than a trade up target.

You are right about Chop… He’s the guy I think that can be a surprise 1st pass rusher off the board, way ahead of projections. If he is who I were targeting, I’d be afraid to move back hoping he was still there…

I’m not necessarily enthused about Verse. I just think he’s the better of the bunch for an early rotation and development aspect. I don’t necessarily want to take one at 15. I’m getting more on the receiver train, especially if we can’t nail a deal down with Pittman. It seems that would be smart, if the right guy is there for our taking. Idk what to expect.

Can we stop trying to say guys will fail or succeed before they even play a game. This is why I hate this time of season. People get way too fixated on a guy and whether he will be successful before they even play. I don’t even follow college that much and I really don’t care who we take now we have a QB. It was just something I noted since Anthony had familiarity with him.

when did I even remotely say he was going to fail? lol you are something…

This kid is like 3 inches taller than fiend and 2” pounds heavier. They are not the same. His Ras says otherwise.

what does height have to do with how they play? He is most likely a slot receiver… Evaluations have stated he lacks the explosiveness to make big plays, plays to his strength of savvy route running, etc. Who does that remind you of? He gets best separation at the slot.

I’m not interested in another Downs. One is enough, in my opinion. We need someone to take Pierce’s spot on the field and with the upside of being a number 1 receiver… regardless of if Pittman is retained long term or not. This guy ain’t it.

    So what you're saying is

Y'all don't see at all a need for Pearsall, Thatsall.

He's not talking about 1st or 3rd round...

He says why bring in a guy like Downs, but less initial burst.. Pearsall doesn't add any explosiveness at all, Thatsall.

that’s essentially what I’m saying. If he’s going in the 2nd round, then it means he is mostly likely our main taken receiver, and I’m not fond on that idea…

Who do you think will be the first pass rusher off the board?

Turner. Based on everything I’ve read. But I would wait for Verse… I think Chop could be a surprise similar to how the Raiders (not without controversy) took Clelin Ferrell in 2019. I don’t necessarily see any of them top 5, but you just never know…

    Downs RAS

    Like I said… he isn’t as quick as downs…

notice the 10 and 20 yard split of the 40. Downs has a faster burst. Notice the shuttle and 3 cone agility rating. They are very similar, but downs is going to be a more explosive receiver.

and at the end of the day, they aren’t near as explosive as some of these other guys. I don’t see a need for Pearsall. I see a need for some of these other receivers that can replace Pierce on the field and be the explosive players we need.

That’s a big discrepancy wow. We have enough big guys though. 6’1 is still good size.

while he tested well, he isn’t as quick as downs is. That’s his knock, he doesn’t offer explosiveness like others do in this draft, and like I believe the colts will look for. I wouldn’t mind having him, by any means. But he and downs play very similar from what I’ve seen. His history with Richardson would be a possible advantage similar to luck and fleenor. But I think it’s a long shot we go this route.

and a guy like McCormick could be the same but on the interior this year. Probably gives you center and guard versatility.

I think that should be viewed as a need, whether free agency or the draft. Ballard likes versatility, and for good reason. Especially on the o and d-lines. Having a few guys, at the least, that can move around if needed, is necessary, imo.

I think we need to start grooming our next center. That means drafting someone to sit behind Kelly for a few years while they develop. Now would be a good time, it seems.

As of this point,  early March,  I have less confidence in what the Colts might do than ever.   Maybe we’ll know more before the draft,  but it sure feels like we’re all throwing darts in the dark.   We’re all guessing more than ever.  About 7 weeks to go….

we’ll definitely know more before the draft.

there will be some reports of extra meetings with prospects. We’ll obviously have signed several players (our own and other free agents) which will clear some questions up for what the needs look like and what that might do to the strategy. But you are right, we are throwing darts… and that’s ironic considering that’s what Ballard says the draft largely is anyways.

I know no one watches the OL stuff but I’m really intrigued by Mason McCormick. He’s a guard from South Dakota State who was at the Shrine Bowl. Played really well there.

Only thing is he weighed in at 309, so maybe he’s more of a center than a guard but if he can play both, that would be great. 3-time team captain too.

seems like an early day 3 three Ballard type.

Almost a 10 RAS? It did not realize that.

downs was a 9, but their numbers aren’t far too far apart. Downs actually has a faster burst and 10 yard split. I just meant as a player. Pearsall is going to be a slot, and they seem to be very similar.

not to say it wouldn’t be alright to have him on the roster, but not as our main receiver pick. I think we are looking at the other more explosive players. That’s pearsall’s big knock, is not as explosive as others.

I think most anything you listed is possible except one thing.    Trading up in the 1st.

Otherwise I think the colts have tons of options, and they’re all good.

I don’t see him trading up at all. And especially for a receiver. the only possibility in my opinion of trading up is to secure the first pass rusher off the board, but I don’t see that either.

I’d like to see him hold and see who they take at 15.

To me, my takeaway that we interviewed Odunze is that might suggest the Colts are considering WR at 15.   I think the chances of trading up are close to zero for all Ballard reasons we know about.

But I think it’s intriguing that WR might seriously be in play at 15.   Personally, Brian Thomas at 15 sounds very appealing.  And I’m sure there others as well.

    Fascinating draft.

I’m trying to figure out his angle of constant mention of the depth of the receiver class.

is he hoping others view it the same/see them as a viable threat to take one at 15? Are they looking to possibly trade up, or down and take one? Is he just laying the groundwork for why he takes a defensive lineman at 15, and waits until later for a receiver?

there’s little doubt he’s working smoke and mirrors

1st: Malik Hooker, trade for Wentz andPaye. Would have to look deeper into the 2 other trades out of the first round to see what that actually turned into.

2nd: Turray, Banogu, Rock, Paris, Pierce, Dayo, Wilson, Lewis

These are all players I feel have under performed for all types of reasons including injuries and scheme. I believe Lewis could be viewed either way depending on the person. He had a great year as a rotational guy. Will also say the jury is still out on Dayo and Pierce

if the jury is out on Dayo, then you shouldn’t list Paye as a failure or underperformer. He is not, even if you believe him to be.

Turay was very promising but injuries- and that can be said for several of those you listed- derailed their growth and careers.

i will agree that scheme could be said for the perceived failure here. If you look at the players Ballard has drafted since 2017, the number that stands out is how many years in the league the vast majority of them played. Just because they don’t work here, doesn’t mean they are unsuccessful or untalented professional football players. I argue that their failures might be more coaching related than anything.

Yeah, I hope Luck gets booed like crazy again. I'd have a worse choice of words for him if I were there, but I don't expect everyone to be as extreme as me, so I'll accept boos at the tailgate.

I still want him blacklisted from the team. No mentions of any kind. What Luck did to this team, the fans, the players, the FO, and ownership was absolutely horrible. I never want to hear his name mentioned by the Colts again. He has caused more harm to this team by retiring then arguably any player I can remember. When I hear his name, it brings out anger, disgust, and hate towards this team and that period from 2019-2023 where we didn't have a QB (I count 2023 because Richardson was out most of the season).

See a therapist. You don’t speak for the colts and especially for colts fans. You don’t speak for me. As a Colts fan, you should be equally as angry at the Colts for what they did to Andrew Luck…
