Wow….  We weren’t talking about OT as a possibility, were we?

No. I was looking at some guys with versatility across the line. They made it clear with this pick that they want better tackle depth. Guys are hyping him up on espn. Say if it weren’t for injury, they would have talked about him a lot sooner. Sounds like a good swing tackle.

“I’m him..” you’ve never heard that? Like- I’m that guy. Usually when a player hits a game winner in basketball. “I’m him… he’s him.”

Reggie will bring the playmaker out in him.

and if not, butt meet bench. Butt kicked out the door and teams will pass you around like a rag doll they don’t really want but feel they need to try and wash.

Chap on who he’s hearing the Colts were trying to go up and get last night:

Somewhat surprised. I figured it would be odunze at 9. Nabers is very talented, so I understand, and happy to hear he was making offers.

Which is why I laugh at those that think Houston made a genius pick instead of lucking into him. They allowed a team to hop in front of them to select a qb instead of ensuring they got Stroud. That tells a lot… but plenty on here refuse to critically think on that, and make up nonsense hypotheticals like they knew Carolina was the team that was going to jump them and knew they would take Young. 😂

it’s like if Latu goes off next year and is rookie of the year, and saying Ballard made a genius move to not trade up and pick Latu because he just knew he’d be there. That’s how ludicrous that argument is. He admitted they felt very lucky, and were… especially if he turns into a pro bowler soon and we look back in hindsight.

I'm not sure when they officially turned the pick in, but there was video of them celebrating and Steichen talking on the phone with someone(I would guess with Latu) with about 4 minutes left on the clock if I'm not mistaken... then the clock dragged out until 1 or 2 minute something before they locked it in.

I was getting ready to say. Most likely for the phone calls and the with the next pick production. Pretty sure it happened last year too.

I like Turner, just didn't see him as a scheme fit for the Colts. I also expected him to be gone in the top 10-ish. I'm not totally shocked by the way the top of the round went, but I never would have called 14 straight offensive players. I figured someone would trade up for a pass rusher. The Falcons taking Penix is the real shocker, I'm still not over that one...

If we believe Ballard from last night, they were probably trying to trade up for Odunze. And I guess the Bears at #9 is kind of a surprise, they only have four picks, and that was the spot that I expected a trade back, especially since they already have Keenan Allen and DJ Moore. But they're doubling down on a strength, which isn't a bad strategy.

I think Latu projects as a matchup problem for blockers. He's an edge who might attract a double team on passing downs, which is something we haven't had in a while. While our pass rush is anemic at times, I think the DL is solid. Now you drop in a guy who can win on the edge, and there's potential for a big step up. And we still have other young guys who have been improving, despite how people here disregard them.

Right. I didn’t mean down on him as a player, but as a fit for our needs. I was surprised by the bears taking Odunze as well (and I doubt very many people saw the falcons doing what they did.) I was surprised the raiders took bowers too. I thought once he made it through the jets pick, he would be there. But we might not have taken him over Latu. I don’t know. I think Odunze was our target though. He might have briefly entertained the cardinals for Harrison, but that was never going to happen, not from the capital we would have to give up nor from them potentially not even answering our phone call. It was too far to move for them. The bears made a lot of sense to move back.

Ballard said he looked at it as completing the d-line. Makes sense that he was making a play for Hunter, as he would certainly have fit that same puzzle piece in their eyes, and freed up the spot last night. Just didn’t work out. Hope it all comes together.

So the thought that Ballard was much more interested in moving up this year seems true. Anyways...

My dream scenario today is Troy Franklin and then Cole Bishop.  Or Edgerrin Cooper then Tez Walker

I like bishop. But I also like Cooper. I see a good chance of doubling up defensively. Either are needs in my opinion. I think cooper has the higher potential. I could also see an attempts trading up for someone at the top of the round they  really like since they preserved the capital with an unsuccessful attempt last night.

If there's really no way to trade back, I viewed Dallas Turner as the best guy on the board. It's easy to understand why the Colts had Latu ahead of him. I like Byron Murphy also, but we know what the Colts have done at DT already. I guess BTJ would have been my choice, but I never expected the Colts to draft a WR in the first round. Knowing that everyone feels good about the medicals, Latu makes all the sense in the world.

You viewed Turner as best? You’ve been unsure of him for a while. I was curious last night what your thoughts were. We’ve had some discussion on pass rushers. I really didn’t feel that Latu was going to be an option at 15, and wouldn’t be a trade up target over a receiver. I never really engaged much with him as a prospect, I guess for that reason. All the simulations I did showed turner available more and not much of Latu.

i would have preferred a trade up for Odunze, but I will never complain about preserving draft capital and taking the first defender of the draft at 15… I think Latu is walking into a great situation defensively. Defensive line has enough pieces that he can be used most effectively and without a ton of pressure early on.

  12. It was telling that Mitchell and Arnold fell to 22/24. I don’t think teams viewed them like most on here did. They were not top 10 talent like Gardner, Witherspoon, etc have been in prior years. I think they were drafted accordingly. I don’t think Latu is a reach, I think we lucked into him quite honestly with the amount of offense at the top. I think Mitchell would have been a reach, especially given the circumstances.

Venturi said he was taught that you want a guy who can put the ball in the endzone or a guy who can knock down their QB.

Not my idea of a sexy pick, but we haven't had a true edge rusher that teams had to worry about in a long, long time.

Or one that brought the true shine out in Buckner, which I think he still has plenty of to show. He and Buck could really wreck havoc on o-lines together. Especially if Latu comes out of the gate hot, which I think we all would hope for.

Yeah. That's why I'm happy about this pick. Latu is the best EDGE on the field in this draft and it isn't even close. That's a change in philosophy for Ballard and I'm happy about it. Still nice athleticism, but the production is that of an elite EDGE. The best case scenario would have been Bowers at 15, but he didn't make it, so Ballard made the correct decision in not trading down and getting the first defensive player off the board before the EDGE run started.

I think we are seeing growth from Ballard as a GM, which is what I would think everyone would hope for. He’s gone after free agents (even though they didn’t come here), he drafted a qb, put offers to move up in the 1st, and now drafted an edge that is actually productive instead of off upside. Hope it continues.

At this point just wait until next year. Go ahead and get your corner, linebacker, safety, and OL depth. Get all that out of the way.

I don't disagree. They like the interior line depth of this draft. Maybe a 3rd or 4th round pick there.

When you look at the last two drafts, the only defensive pick was JuJu at corner last year. There was 5 offensive picks at the top of both 22 and 23 drafts. Pierce, Woods, Raismann, Richardson, Downs. Could easily be a top heavy defensive draft.

We tried. It’s been reported we were the highest bidders on at least two FA players and lost both

Which is literally the definition of "two to tango." We were left dancing alone, so we found the best partner that was available.

I'm not knowledgeable enough to judge this pick but I'm struggling to square two of the most common posts in favor of this pick

     1. Injury isn't a big deal.

     2. He would have been top 5 without the injury.

    Which is it?

Elite talent that has no red flags doesnt fall very far. Is it a red flag or not?

I haven’t seen he would have been. More along the lines of could have been.

14 straight offensive players. He was the best defensive player in the draft as far as the colts board, the first defender taken, and that being the opinion of several analysts. Some have said “it’s not even close.”

Is there a team or two in the top 10 that might have picked him over the offensive player they went with, if they had no concerns? Possibly. What a weird top half of the draft.

Bowers only went a couple of spots before them so he wouldn’t have required a big offer to go get so yeah I think it’s safe to say it was one of the WRs.  Clearly it wasn’t one of the tackles or QBs so that only leaves the WRs really.

Yeah they didn’t have the same value on him. If they put a big offer even on Odunze at 9, then a similar offer gets Bowers. They just didn’t value him, and I don’t know why I’m surprised by it, because Ballard’s repeatedly talked about blocking tight ends value. I’m going to be watching Latu clips all weekend now. He says he believes Latu was the final piece to the d-line and considers it excellent, by far the best since he’s been here.

no excuses- trenches are important. Arguably the best o-line and d-line going into 2024 during his tenure. He has the qb. Has some weapons, obviously looking to add. I would expect a receiver 2nd round. Maybe we trade up right off the bat.

Ballard says they put several offers (big ones) to trade up. He was feisty with the reporters tonight. They basically asked if it was for a receiver and he responded that they were able to pick the defensive player they wanted, so it’s not hard to put two and two together. Said it takes two to tango on a deal and for teams to move back to 15, they potentially miss out. They identified a handful of elite players, made an attempt at a few, no one was budging, and were very lucky to have their choice on defense.

The last question was if he was concerned of Latu’s age. And he said “23?… no, we tried to sign a 29 year old.” (Referring to Hunter) and laughed as he left. Sounds like they feel pretty good. But they definitely were looking to trade up for one of Harrison, Nabers, Odunze, Bowers. Likely one of the three receivers. Not sure we were as hot on Bowers as we would think.
