I'm not knowledgeable enough to judge this pick but I'm struggling to square two of the most common posts in favor of this pick

     1. Injury isn't a big deal.

     2. He would have been top 5 without the injury.

    Which is it?

Elite talent that has no red flags doesnt fall very far. Is it a red flag or not?

I haven’t seen he would have been. More along the lines of could have been.

14 straight offensive players. He was the best defensive player in the draft as far as the colts board, the first defender taken, and that being the opinion of several analysts. Some have said “it’s not even close.”

Is there a team or two in the top 10 that might have picked him over the offensive player they went with, if they had no concerns? Possibly. What a weird top half of the draft.

Bowers only went a couple of spots before them so he wouldn’t have required a big offer to go get so yeah I think it’s safe to say it was one of the WRs.  Clearly it wasn’t one of the tackles or QBs so that only leaves the WRs really.

Yeah they didn’t have the same value on him. If they put a big offer even on Odunze at 9, then a similar offer gets Bowers. They just didn’t value him, and I don’t know why I’m surprised by it, because Ballard’s repeatedly talked about blocking tight ends value. I’m going to be watching Latu clips all weekend now. He says he believes Latu was the final piece to the d-line and considers it excellent, by far the best since he’s been here.

no excuses- trenches are important. Arguably the best o-line and d-line going into 2024 during his tenure. He has the qb. Has some weapons, obviously looking to add. I would expect a receiver 2nd round. Maybe we trade up right off the bat.

Ballard says they put several offers (big ones) to trade up. He was feisty with the reporters tonight. They basically asked if it was for a receiver and he responded that they were able to pick the defensive player they wanted, so it’s not hard to put two and two together. Said it takes two to tango on a deal and for teams to move back to 15, they potentially miss out. They identified a handful of elite players, made an attempt at a few, no one was budging, and were very lucky to have their choice on defense.

The last question was if he was concerned of Latu’s age. And he said “23?… no, we tried to sign a 29 year old.” (Referring to Hunter) and laughed as he left. Sounds like they feel pretty good. But they definitely were looking to trade up for one of Harrison, Nabers, Odunze, Bowers. Likely one of the three receivers. Not sure we were as hot on Bowers as we would think.

    What would you find out?

That was said about the current pass rushers. Which Ballard seems to agree

If it can’t sustain… I think that concern was just addressed. With a new and revered d-line coach and a high level pass rusher that will be on the field often from the start, this defensive line will bring pressure. If the back end improves (and it should just from an offseason growth standpoint, let alone any further additions from here) the defensive line could elevate big time from a pressure standpoint.

  5. In the words of bill bellichick, no disrespect to the secondary, but if the qb can’t get the ball out, you don’t have to cover as long…

    Bring. the. heat.

many on here said the pressure from the d-line wasn’t good enough in spite of a record breaking sack year… said it wouldn’t sustain without the pressure. Well, we will find out…

Like the pick quite a bit. This guy has top level pass rushing traits and to get a guy like that at 15 is rare.

The Colts could have a truly elite DL. They seem to have it all, including great depth at every position.

they are working for it, without a doubt. Charlie Partridge is salivating right now.

All the trade backs that Ballard has done...majority of the time, it gave us Quincy Wilsons, Kemoko Turays, etc.

Yeah- and if he has success trading up this draft with a major offensive weapon like Odunze or Bowers- his two main trade ups will be in that player and JT. Could really alter his thinking moving forward.

yeah pretty much what I figured.  If they are going to start mixing up coverages and running more man coverage, then sure grab a CB in the first.  If they're going to continue being a mostly zone team regardless, then no, no round 1 CB.

I don’t expect it. If they do take one, maybe it’s because they play on utilizing him differently, so I won’t be upset. I just don’t think it’s going to happen. I might be less shocked with a tackle drafted tonight honestly.

I'm confused as to why what Grigson couldn't figure out has to do with how Ballard might feel about providing AR oline help with a trade down from 15.   Its not like Ballard hasn't drafted olinemen before when the major injuries to his starting QB were not caused by protection issues.

But have a nice day and enjoy the draft.

for somebody who didn’t want to argue with it and claims to have written a finality on it, you sure won’t let it go Doug…

Maybe I am the one who will end up with egg on his face but I just don’t get why people think the Colts are actually going to draft an olineman with their first pick.  Nelson and Kelly returned to their pro-bowl playing status.  Raimann looks to be a very good young left tackle and the Colts have made it pretty clear they see Smith as one of the most underrated tackles in football.  They aren’t drafting a right guard in the first round, Nelson was exception, and even then Fries held his own at right guard last year.  They aren’t going to draft a guy who isn’t going to start next year either in the first round.  The starting oline is probably the least of their worries going into this draft.

There’s been a lot of comments made by Ballard lately that they are always planning a few years out, while the coach is pushing for players that can help now. So it’s a balance. He’s made comments that the goal is to protect and provide weapons for AR. The talent at the top of the draft seems like there could be a couple really good offensive lineman falling down to us, with a run on receivers and skill players. I don’t necessarily see that, I think there could be a run on qbs, tackles, and pass rushers with the obvious 3 receivers before we pick. That could potentially push all corners, as well as Bowers down to 15. But say, both corners and Bowers go top 15, who does that push out? Most likely a talented tackle. They can either trade back or take the highest rated player on the board, which would provide swing tackle depth, and a plan for if Smith is injured/isnt re-signed following 2025. Some are speculating it might be best to move Smith to guard in that scenario.

    I can

I can too. And that will tell us everything we need to know about how the view him. It will tell us their feelings on the tight end room, and what direction they pick from there will tell us even more.

but if they take him at 15, we won’t know much about what might have happened, as they will be landing someone they had rated highly and fell to them.

I have said from the beginning that safety was the biggest need on the D.  BUt I have been beaten down on that   So......

I’ve thought it was the need all along. I incorrectly got my hopes up that we’d target one of the free agents so that we were going into this draft with the ability to feel confident about luxury picks and true bpa’s. That didn’t even remotely come close to happening. So I’m with you on that…

I'd look at WR more for offense    I think we are good at TE      For the record I would not be upset with a Bowers pick.   Just think its a luxury pick

I don’t disagree. But if the scouting department and Shane Steichen see Bowers as far better than the receiver options and he’s right there dangling in our faces, I’m not sure I see a better option, realistically. If they don’t value him like I would think they do… then I would prefer them to trade down and draft a receiver/add picks (to draft a defensive back later on)

WHY?        CB would be the need

see my last comment while you were writing this…

i don’t view it the same way you do. CB is a need… I don’t believe it is THE need. I think safety is more of a need, quite frankly. But neither of them should be in front of adding weapons for this offense.

Sure   But of all the needs on this team TE isn't one of them.     We have a very good TE group if you ask me.   I would not hate the pick but,  It would not be my hope

I don’t know about very good. That’s dependent on a tight end that is looking like a bust. Offense needs weapons.

in the same breath, I can make the argument that flowers might end up in the same boat, so corner is certainly a position of need. I just don’t know about passing up premier pass catchers in the first when there will be opportunities throughout for solid cornerback play. So I do understand, I just don’t value it as highly.
