    7 starters? Fuhreal?

That would not curb disappointment....that would be other worldly.

If we trade out of 6 and pick up another top 50 or 2, I don't think 7 is out of question at all... given our roster has much needed upgrades across the board.

We have had undrafted players starting on this roster the past several season's, and you don't think we can find starting caliber upgrades in rounds 4 and 5?? Interesting...

To me, we'll get an elite player at #6 and it will fill one of our many holes.

Then with 3 picks in the 2nd round we should be able to get 3 potential starters to fill other holes we have.

There are 22 positions on a team and with three picks in the 2nd round we can potentially get one of the top 3 players at a particular position.

The picks in the 2nd round will go a long way toward building this team.  The 6th pick is a given to start.

So, we're in great shape and can look for BPA in the later rounds to build depth, competition and find another starter for either 2018 or 2019.

I think with the current holes in the roster, and success in the past few years in rounds 3-5, I expect starting caliber players in those rounds... given they are essentially carryovers from the previous rounds, with top 3 and 4 picks in each one respectively. I posted earlier, the only disappointing thing for this draft is if we don't come away with 5-7 starters... and we won't know this for a year or two.

Who is pessimistic? That trade back was the best thing to happen in a long time. I am all for doing it again.

I am not really sure how you can be disappointed in missing out on a LG, a  RB and a good DE prospect. By default, Barkley and Nelson being the top prospects makes it a weaker draft at the top. Seems counterintuitive.

Plenty throughout this forum but specifically from the media. I think a great deal of folks thought the Colts were in prime position to get Chubb or Barkley at 3 and would do so... then thought they were going to be the winners of the draft after trading back to 6 and Chubb still likely there... to NYG moving Pierre-paul and possibly taking Chubb at 2.

It's such a circus act with the buildup to the draft. My feeling is this: let it play out all the way up to pick #6, and see what falls in our lap. We might be shocked what happens. We are sitting in great shape with the roster holes currently needing filled, and the vision of this organization going forward. I'm in favor of taking the highest bidder regardless what happens and letting your scouting and hard work over the past year take care of itself and bringing in 5-7 starting caliber players. This team needs that more than Chubb or Nelson.

I can’t see all 3 of those guys being gone at 6 but I do think Barkley will be.

I can't either, which is why I think we are sitting in great shape. We might be looking to take offers all night leading up to our pick and trying to move back a few spots if two of the three are available at 6. No one knows what Ballard's idea of a perfect draft is. The only thing we know for sure is he is going through with his word to build through the draft and he wants to acquire as many high picks as possible. I won't be shocked if he passes on one of those guys if the price is right.

  5. I read and hear a lot of concern and pessimism from Colts fans and the media toward the franchise regarding the draft. Many feel that moving back to 6 is going to end with disappointment by missing out on Chubb, Barkley, possibly Nelson.

Here's the thing: as much as those guys are all elite players, they might not be Ballard's first choice to begin with. They might very well be off the board by the time we pick at 6, and we might be looking to move back even further for extra capital depending on how things are going.

This is a rebuild and any one of those 3 players, while they certainly would make their mark on our roster, will not make or break this team. We will snag a player, whether at 6, or a couple at 12 and 21 following a trade with the Bills, that will help improve this roster... Period.

The success of this draft will not be determined by #6. And it should not be at the conclusion of this draft nor at season's end. Let's sit back and enjoy a deep talent pool and the draft capital this front office has to work with. More importantly, let's give this coaching staff some time to develop these men into football players and watch the success build every game over the next few season's. Patience will pay dividends with this team. I'm encouraged by the youth, vision, and patience in the Colts operation right now.

  6. Tom Manning. Former OL coach/offensive coordinator for Iowa State (who had a great season in 2017)... currently TE coach for the Indianapolis Colts for those who aren't aware.

His scheme often split tight ends out wide. Allen Lazard was one of his receivers this season that is 6'5 230, speed in question, but ran a 4.55 at the combine. #23 receiver in the draft according to Walter rankings. I wouldn't be surprised to see him in a Colts uniform next year. Predicted to go anywhere from 4th to 7th round. He is a Hell of a red zone target, look him up.

To tie that in with the Ebron  signing, it falls in perfect alignment with what the vision is offensively. We are going to split teams out with big bodied tight ends and receivers and have speed and mismatches all over the field.

We need a cornerback as well.

Yes and we need a few receivers as well. This team has a lot of needs. But interior line, running back and linebacker is deep and really sweet in the 2nd round of this draft...

I think you will see one of each (wr/db) signed before the draft, and one of each drafted somewhere. I think people shouldn't write off Minkah at #6, if we stick with #6 ( at this point, I say acquire all you can and let's go shopping in the draft )...

  8. I have yet to find one mock that has Vea in the top 10, so am I missing something?

I would be shocked if Chubb isn't at #6 on draft day... I think it is a no-brainer if so. I thought it was at #3, but had a feeling there would be a trade with the amount of qb talent and need this year. We are really fortunate this is the case, and might have serious trade opportunities on draft day because of teams scrambling to get in position. The excitement will continue to build every day. Round 2 has the potential for some great (and much needed) talent at positions like interior line, runningback, and linebacker. I hope for all 3 to be addressed, but would be tickled to see CB package an early 2nd for a 1st next year and hope we land a top 10 pick.

I can't help but think of Pagano and Grigson in their "let's hunt" mentality. It is refreshing to be building a young and talented roster to develop instead of older, overpriced and washed out retreads that those clowns jumped on for so many years.

    NFL_Pyramid.0.jpg

This is a great resource. Positional value for a 3-4 defense. This pyramid was constructed from researching Bill Polian, Steve Bellichick, and several top GM/Scouting work over the years. John Dorsey in his time at Kansas City fits the pyramid to a T. I cannot help but think that Ballard's vision wasn't influenced from this...

Obviously 1st tier is taken care of (if Andrew is healthy). You can argue for or against that LT is secured with Castonzo, I am going to say it is secure... Primary Edge Rusher could be taken care of, with drafting Chubb at #3 this year. Wilson is considered to be our primary corner going forward, and if so, that would take care of tier 2. I think those 4 positions are highly valued with any defense, but this pyramid is clearly for a 3-4 defense.

With a 4-3 defense, I think FS would be higher on the list, especially a Zone based, which is what the Colts are looking to implement. I would venture to guess that it would be a 3rd tier value, and speaks to why Hooker was selected at 15 last draft. Middle Linebacker is certainly a high priority on this list, and causes me the greatest concern with what Ballard's thought process is with it. I am assuming he is hot on some guys in the draft, but that might require passing on #3 and Chubb (assuming he is available) and moving down to select someone like Smith from Georgia.

Regardless, I think this model is a good reference point to start talking about what Ballard's vision is with positional value, to help understand why he is passing on big dollar players. If anything, this chart makes me feel comfortable knowing he clearly doesn't value spending big on an interior offensive lineman. Will be an interesting rest of FA, and the draft is going to be exciting. Stay optimistic, friends. We have a smart man leading this organization for the long haul, not for the immediate gratification that you are all anxiously searching.

I’m going to say this completely hypothetical based on our presumed interests in players.  But, how would you feel about the starting Oline below?

    LT Castanzo

    LG Jensen/Mewhort

    C Kelly

    RG Jensen/Mewhort

    RT Fluker

I think we bring Mewhort back on a prove it deal.  Holder tweeted that he’s heard good news on his health.  Thoughts? Does this fix the oline in your opinion?

In my opinion, Ballard believes he can put a couple pieces this offseason via FA and the Draft, and have an improved and deeper line... simply because Pagano's crew is gone. And I'm not sure he is off base at all. The predictability and the constant 4 and 5 second plus dropbacks put entirely way too much pressure on an offensive line, that no, was not that great.

Yes teams that invest heavily on the line have great fronts that protect their quarterback and run the ball well. There has to be some balance. New England could rotate 8 and 9 guys on the offensive line, and have in the past, and still have a great offense. Why? Because of development, scheme, a great gameplan and execution, and Tom Brady. Brady helps as much as anything, but I'm not sure that a healthy Luck won't be too far behind with the proper guidance. We know how well Brissett played under NE's system.

Frank Reich and his staff should be head and shoulders above our last group of clowns, and it will show across the board... especially on the offensive line.

  11. Ballard has repeatedly said that you do not trade out of the top 3 to a spot that might not have first round grade guys left. He has said there could be 15 or so true first round grade guys, so it would be a mistake to trade away one of the premier positions in the draft to a spot where there aren't any first round grade players left... regardless of what else is being attached. When you can get a game changer with your first pick, you don't hesitate.

This is a long-term rebuild effort. It takes multiple drafts with quality players selected and developed. That sometimes mean taking advantage of your situation and picking a big time player rather than loading up on extra picks.

  12. Haven't commented on this site for.. obviously 5 years according to my profile name.

With that being said, I am most optimistic of the direction this organization is heading since about 2007... I am curious to know what this forum's general expectations are for the tenure of McDaniels, if things are to go very well. In other words, IF he and Ballard click on all levels, Andrew comes back full speed and plays exceptional like we all know he can, and the pieces continue to be put together properly, how long do you expect McDaniels to ride this train? If he successfully wins a Superbowl or two and firmly makes his mark in Indianapolis, how long do you expect him to remain here, being that he is 41 years young and has worked under a man working well into his 60s.

  13. Before the start of free agency, I understood that the Colts were between $39M and $46M (depending on the source) under the cap. Then they went and signed several free agents, after which I read they were around $11M or so (also depending on the source). Jim Irsay, for some strange reason keeps saying he's "cash over cap". Anyway, the numbers indicated on the page you cite aren't consistent with other estimates. I understand the math you used in your explanation. I just saying that the conclusion of that math isn't consistent with what I've heard from other sources.

"Cash over cap" only means that we have spent, in new contracts via free agency, more than the cap for this year. doesn't have anything to do with being over the cap.

Meaning: if the cap is 130 million this year. We spent over 130 million in new contracts.

  14. He got better every single week last season. I think he fits perfectly with Pagano. Pagano can make him into a man. He has the athleticism. He has the talent. I think he lacked the confidence and arrogant attitude he has to have to be very successful. When he left Miami, and the first few weeks he was here, he seemed kind of like a baby to me. He pouted. Seemed immature; which was what Miami people were telling us. I knew that would change under Pagano and our crew. He started playing with more "swag", if you will, throughout the season. By week 17, he was strutting around the field like he owned the place. I expect to see that Vontae Davis from week 1 this year.

  15. I thought I'd give my two cents on Polian. This is only my second post on this forum so bear with me.

Polian has arguably the best track record of any gm ever. There's a reason he's with espn, his system of evaluation and expertise is unparalleled. Bill's problem was that he became too powerful in Indianapolis. He thought he was above Irsay, and the firing had probably more to do with that than anything else. He also was slipping towards the end of his career. Handing over the "gm" title to his son was a mistake, although I highly doubt his son made the final calls on anything. Not drafting an offensive lineman instead of jerry hughes in 2010 was awful. And he's admitted that more than once. A big regret of his. But his track record in Indy is, aside from Manning's brilliance, the biggest reason for our dominance from '99 to 2011. All it takes is to look at the pickups and draft picks (aside from hughes) and you see brilliance. He had his way, bringing up through the system. Built the team around manning. Wanted to trade manning in '04 when his value was high, and build a defensive team like the ravens or bucs. Thank God for Irsay dropping the hammer on that. I didnt exactly like his system, but it worked. I love Ryan Grigson's. I love Chuck Pagano's defense and his fire. I'm really going to enjoy Pep Hamilton's offense with Luck under center. But give credit where it's due, and Bill Polian deserves a lot for getting us where we are. In good times and bad. Great football mind. But his arrogance was his flaw. Is his flaw I might say.

  16. New member. Been browsing this forum for a long time. Never took the time to join until now. Free agency has me anxious.

Landry is a big upgrade at one of our most at-need positions. If he can stay healthy, our defense will shock some people. I was hoping for this pickup rather than the Pollard talk. What most folks don't know about pollard is that he's been a disaster in the locker rooms everywhere he's been. Fort Wayne in hs, he left early at Purdue because Tiller practically kicked him out. Houston and Baltimore. Reports are that Baltimore is doing the same that purdue did. So I'm very happy we steered clear of that mess and picked up a more talented and athletic player. Keep building this monster.
