Patriot fans tend to focus on 2001 to present, much as Red Sox fans like to focus past 2004, forgetting 1918-2003, and in the Patriots case 1960- 2000, a fourty year Championship gap. So while the Kraft era has been successful , it is just an era in a larger landscape of total organizational success.

The Colts had a pretty lousy stretch between Unitas and Harbaugh and the selling of the franchise as well which we don't need to rehash but that is also part of the history. My only argument here is this run by the Pats since Kraft bought the team in 94 is the best in NFL history and still going.

Not really. I see the Patriots as a top AFC rival, but historically as a Baltimore fan, we've beaten them many times over the years. The old Baltimore Colts used to slap them around, and the Ravens have had their successes. NE is an organization that has won four times in 55 years. Not bad, but not dynastic. I saw the Baltimore Colts win four times in 30 years, and the Ravens win twice in 20. No one would call that dynastic either , but it's pretty good. We are just not in awe of the Patriots in Baltimore. That's why we can go up to New England and win.

When looking at a dynastic run you have to count the years from where the first win began to where it ended. The Pats run began in 2001 and is still going and is the most historic stretch of winning in NFL history. And if you go back to when Kraft bought the team in 1994, no other owner has won more (regular season and post-season)over a 21 year stretch than him.

The old Colts were certainly fantastic but their run does not compare to what the Pats have done since Kraft became owner during a much more difficult era to win consistently with the cap and FA.

I was shocked the Seahawks wasn't Top 5. I was thinking Chiefs too being maybe #1 and they were 4th. Patriots deserve huge credit for solid play in their secondary. Just solid all around. After losing Revis and Browner and to maintain that is pretty impressive.

The Hawks really struggled this year. Some of it was Kam's hold out but I think much of it is the new DC as well. They may luck out though and draw the Packers in the WC round. They match up well with them.

I am really proud of the Pats and Bill's work with the defense. A main reason why the secondary has been so good is because Bill made some good additions to the front 7 with the money he would have used to pay Revis. The front has consistently gotten more pressure and the LB unit may be the best in football. That being said, Butler and Ryan have held their own this year and have played a lot of pressed man which I did not expect. Chung has been really good too.

I would've bet my money on Denver being the best but they are 2nd. After losing Revis the Pats have no doubt held their own.

Yeah. Denver's has been great too. I was surprised to see the Rams in the top 5.

I think the Jets win that game but you never know with those 2 teams. If the Bills bring their A game and the Jets mess around, Bills will take them.

This is a huge game for Bowles to prove he is not Rex. He needs to win this game and get in the playoffs. Pitt gifted them that chance last week by losing to the Ravens.

We will see? It may not even come to that though as Brock may remain the man. I just think if Peyton knows he is going retire he doesn't want to go out losing so I could see him playing Good in the Playoffs.

I know what you are saying. It will seem strange if Peyton does not at least get one more shot. I would love for him and Brady to go at it again in the playoffs but it will be difficult for him to supplant Brock. I think this has probably been the plan all along after Brock beat the Pats and continued to progress in Kubiak's offense. It is not a bad thing though to have Peyton come off of the bench in emergency.

  7. PFF rated its top 10 secondaries this season and the Patriots came out on top with a grade of 82.7. This is an unbelievable achievement from this group given this was the one unit that was supposed to be the weakest link on the team with the departures of Revis and Browner. Butler and Ryan have played superb while the Pats got tremendous safety play on top.

Also interesting to note that neither the Jets or Seahawks made the top 10.

I am shocked at the Bills as well. I thought after they beat Indy on opening day, they would be a 10-6 team at worse. I guess Rex failed again!

I think they will all feel pretty good if they can beat the Jets Sunday and knock them out of the playoffs. The Jets are pretty banged up on top.

Because of Denver's Defense mainly but I think if Peyton knows he is going to retire he will play lights out and he's capable of winning the big game. Peyton will have a lot of motivation if it is indeed his last season + a lot of people think he is washed up.

That same defense will be playing for Brock as well. That is hardly a compelling reason. Peyton is passed playing lights out and Foxboro is a house of horrors for him.

Jim Schwartz got more out of this defense last year than Rex Ryan, where the heck is Jim Schwartz? If the Colts fire Pagano and get a new head coach, I won't be opposed to getting Jim Schwartz as our next DC. He is someone very few talk about, IMO. He is a good DC, just not head coach material, like so many DCs that made the jump and failed.

That is probably one of the biggest surprise of this season - how poorly the Bills defense has performed under Ryan. Normally his defensive players love him but this Bills team turned on him led by Williams.

I cant either. If it's Denver at New England for the AFC I give Brock a 25% chance of winning and that is being generous. He has played well so I am being generous with that %. Patriots rarely lose at Foxboro and no way will Tom Brady lose to a QB with no Playoff experience unless they just lay an egg with Turnovers. If Peyton is healthy and it is probable that it is his last season and because of the rivalry he has with Tom/BB, I give Peyton a 50/50 chance/50%. I think it goes either way. Peyton has won big games in the Playoffs, a SB, and has the experience playing Tom when it counts.

How can you give Peyton a 50/50 chance of winning in Foxboro when he is 2-8 lifetime there which ironically is a 25% win percentage? His only two wins came in 05/06 and he has never won there while playing in Denver (0-3) or in the post-season (0-2). I will give you that Brock is an unknown but Peyton is a known quantity and he is lousy in Foxboro especially when it is cold.

  12. Wow. So Peyton as a back up. Never thought I would see that. Good for him to agree but that has to be unbelievably difficult - healthy enough to suit up and riding the bench. Will be interested to see how Brock performs with Peyton sitting right there. I think he will be fine vs Chargers but this adds another layer of pressure for sure.

    Good coach,    terrible gm

I am not sure about the good coach part. He is an innovative guy for sure but he seemed unable to game plan well for specific opponents and knowing when to take the foot off the pedal to give his D a rest. And his play calling at times was very suspect.

I'm thinking that Peyton gets on the field this Sunday....

I do wonder if Peyton standing there in his uniform ready to go will get in Brock's head ... he may come out tight. Although it should not matter much vs the awful Chargers.

I actually agree with this. :)

If Peyton's arm was anywhere close to his 2012/2013 levels, he would still be starting. It is clearly not. When Peyton's wide out DT comes out and says this, you know his arm is officially shot:

    http://www.nfl.com/news/story/0ap3000000611528/article/demaryius-peyton-cant-throw-as-hard-as-osweiler

"You know, Brock is a different type of quarterback," Thomas told NFL Media's James Palmer on Monday, "so you know his (ball) is for sure faster with a little more thump behind it. Peyton doesn't really have a route he can throw hard on unless it's a short route. That's the main thing."

Wow. Those are some pretty pointed comments by DT who has always been a big fav of Manning. It would seem the team is behind Brock at this point which is not surprising.

I have a friend that's a big Bengals fan. I said the same to him. I certainly don't think they'll go as far as the AFCCG, but they didn't get blown out at Denver. IMO, still an impressive performance (at least for part of the game) for a team with a backup QB.

Sure, all things considered McCarron did just fine but the Bengals are in deep trouble if he has to start in the playoffs which seems likely as the Bengals will play in the WC round before Dalton is ready to return if the Broncos beat the Chargers.

    A) Favre isn't Pats fans favorite

    B) Favre and Manning are comparable...but not in this topic man sheesh. You were just going for what I guess I'll refer to as the Favre Card from now on.

Favre may have had a lot of drama at the end but no one can deny that he never lost his ability to play down the stretch. His arm stayed strong and he was mentally tough. Even after he retired at age 41, there were still teams that wanted him and were willing to pay a boat load.

Belichick was hated by a lot of the Browns roster. This was a guy who running a team like a dictator and famously waived Bernie Kosar in the middle of the season and was notorious for not liking coaches who stood up to him.

I don;t really care about the second part because it seems you completely misses my point.

Belichick and Kelly are night and day comparisons. Belichick was there for six seasons with a losing record and only one playoff appearance and the Browns were moving. And every coach makes unpopular personnel decisions. None of his players ever made comments as Kelly have calling him a racist, saying he ran the locker room like a college environment, etc.

Belichick got ran out of Cleveland because his players didn't like him. This is almost the exact same scenario except that Kelly has a better record.

Even Belichick wouldn't have Belichick's resume if he got ran out of New England after they had a losing season.

To the bold - Say what?

To the second sentence - Bill has only had ONE losing season in NE - his first with Grier and Carroll's mess of a roster that he remolded in 2001 and won the SB with a 6th round pick at QB.

I'm surprised the Bengals are playing so well with their starting QB out. They don't appear to have dropped off much if at all. If they can keep this up, they're as formidable as any other team in the AFC.

The Bengals have no chance without Dalton. It is a killer that they lost to Denver as they needed the bye in order to get Dalton back. McCarron is a nice kid but after a solid first half where his receivers made some acrobatic catches for him, the Denver defense ate his lunch in the second half. Maybe they luck out and draw a favorable match up in the wild card round at home but I don't see them beating KC or Pitt (if Pitt makes it in), maybe the Jets but I would not bet on it.

Pats will beat the Dolphins, if they don't its the shocker of the year to me almost. Miami is terrible.

What I am more interested in is seeing how the Jets do in Buffalo. Rex Ryan will want to make it a goal this year to sweep the Jets and last time the Jets played the Pats they lost the following week with almost a hangover type of look.

Rex is calling the game his Super Bowl. lol. You can always count on him for intense hyperbole.

The Bills do not have McCoy which could be big and the Jets have just been inching along on offense for several weeks now. I really think the game is a toss up. It is in Buffalo so the crowd will be roaring.

  22. Saints will have to figure out Brees contract. He has one year left at a huge cap hit. They would need to sign him to a new deal and the rub would be how much Brees would accept. I can't see him doing a Brady type extension not when a team like Houston would pay top dollar for him or the Jets or Bills for that matter.

I thought Foles had good stats when he was with Philly.  The problem is I think Kelly thought Bradford was a step up from  that but he looked lost all season, IMO.

Maybe Foles belongs in Philly and Bradford in St Louis.....oops...too late.

Your first sentence is spot on. He gave up picks for Bradford so the expectation was that he would be much better than Foles. This is where Kelly made a poor decision. I am all for trying to upgrade but when you run his type of offensive system, you have to have the right guy. Still, I think he should have gotten another season or two with a new QB of his choosing.
