Well, Simmons tore his ACL and still was drafted in the early 20s. If this helps him fall to #13 (which I haven’t been predicting), I’d be happy to snag him there!

We’ll see. Ballard has the best poker face in the league. It’s always hard to guess what he’ll do. He’s got 3 drafts under his belt and all of them look different. He holds all the cards close to him. Plus we don’t know how the picks before us will go besides picks one and two. Plus he’s never had to draft a QB before so we don’t even know what he’s looking for.
If I had to put a bet on it, I’d say there’s a 60% chance he’ll draft a QB in the first.
True. I’ve been thinking about what the most important traits CB and Reich will look for in a QB. I think #1 is going to be Football IQ. They want someone who can read a D presnap, make adjustments, and nail the mental game. To me, I don’t think that is Jordan Love. He was great when he was in the air-raid and just had to pick a receiver and throw a precise pass into the window. Not so good when he had to read a D this season. I’ve read some stuff about Gordon actually having Peyton-like football IQ (even though he was in an air-raid too). At any rate, I’d think that the interviews will be where we fall for a QB in this draft... -

This basically says what we non-Lovers have been thinking.

Yeah, I’m buying into the Clowney and Harris signings too. They make a lot of sense to me. And while I’m warming to Love, I just can’t get to him being worth that #13 pick. We’d be passing on a huge star to draft Love IMO - Kinlaw, Ruggs, Wirfs, Lamb, Becton. That’s really good talent we’d have to pass on....

Gonna be interesting around here when Love and Herbert are still there at #13 and the Colts take a DT, WR, or OT.
I hope so (at least in Love’s case). I’d be tempted by Herbert, ‘cause I have a better feeling about him...-

I actually agree with you. I think that Jordan Love has been vastly over-hyped among draftniks, particularly those on this forum. I don't think there's any way that Love would be drafted by Ballard over some of the other prospects that will be available. Not sure who that'll be, but it'll be some of the following: Andrew Thomas, Javon Kinlaw, Jerry Jeudy, Derrick Brown, Mekhi Becton, Tristan Wirfs, Henry Ruggs, etc. Too high of an opportunity cost to take a shot at Josh Allen Jr. (Allen had a decent season to my surprise in Year 2, but I still don't see him ever being an above average QB.) At any rate, it's unpopular around here, but I see us going with Brissett, Kelly, and hopefully Anthony Gordon of Washington St., and reassessing what we have after the year.
BTW, if I thought Ballard was done assessing JB and Kelly and was certain they weren't the one, I think he'd go all out for Bridgewater...

Knee injury assisted, of course...

Yeah, Gallimore would definitely work. Kinlaw’s my man, but I’m starting to think the odds are against Kinlaw or Brown making it to #13...

You really believe Brissett is going to learn to anticipate eight or nine years into having high level coaching at the position?
I don’t know. I don’t think he’s as far off as most on this forum believe. He does a lot of things right for this offense...

Look, I don’t disagree with his assessment that JB lacks anticipation. But the Rivers stuff is insane. If you have a team leader in JB that you bring back, why would you bring in a declining face of another franchise to confuse the situation? To me it’s simple, JB is starter, and Kelly and probable draftee are there if JB proves himself not to be the man next year... I’d rather learn something and develop JB, Kelly, and draftee than bring in the next Collins..

Would not want to see Love picked at #13, if he's the only one of the top 4 QBs available. But, if Ballard sees him as worthy of the #13 pick, then I know he has been thoroughly evaluated and CB would be comfortable with him at 13.
This is how I feel. From everything I’ve seen, I don’t think I’d take Love with our #34 pick, but it CB pulls the trigger at #13, I’ll be thinking, “I guess I was wrong!”-

I’ve been thinking about our first round pick, and I think a few great players at positions of need will definitely available for us to choose from. Now, some of us have been vocal anti-Lovers, but you can throw him into the discussion also. Here’s how the math breaks down:
Players who’ll be long gone:
(6) Burrow, Young, Tua, Okudah, Herbert, Simmons
That leaves six more players that’ll be gone before we pick. Most of the likeliest players to go in the other six picks before us seem to be at positions of need: DT, WR, and OT.
OT may not be an obvious position of need to many of you, but when you win in the trenches, you have to ensure proper depth and succession. I think Castonzo is going to come back, but getting his successor in place and gaining experience (probably starting at another position) is a great idea. Not too easy to find a top LT without a high pick or grossly overpaying. Plus, it potentially gets the weak link (Glowinski) out of the lineup and makes him available for depth. So, the following players should make up the bulk of the rest selected before our pick:
DT (2) Kinlaw, Brown
WR (3) Jeudy, Ruggs, Lamb
OT (4) Wills, Thomas, Becton, Wirfs
QB (1) (If you must) Love
So, at least four of those ten should be available to us. Maybe more if someone snags another EDGE or CB or Safety or something. I think my priorities would be the DTs in the order above, followed by the four OTs. I’d be tempted to take Jeudy over Wirfs, maybe...

Part of me believes that Irsay and Ballard may be willing to hold off on majorly addressing the QB position another year to see if Luck still has no desire to return. This isn’t like when we moved on from Manning because the next great one stumbled into our laps. There are no easy/high probability solutions in this draft...

. JB's vision was just plain awful.
Funny, some stuff I read about the SB practices indicated that Love’s fatal weakness is poor field vision. I guess if we select Love, CB must have a “type” at QB. At least JB avoids negative plays, though.... -
I think I woulda gone:
1 Kinlaw
2 Justin Jefferson
2 Wanogho
3 Stenberg
I’m more worried than most about OL depth/succession...
Then, with Chinn gone in the 3rd (I think that might actually happen), I think I’d target Anthony Gordon in the 4th. Was he available at our pick?
-
Has anyone selected Oklahoma’s Parnell Motley yet. Very productive with the pbu this year, and has some length. You did well - I’m still 100% out on Love in the first two rounds, but Kinlaw and Wanogho in our first three picks are perfect. Love Duggar, and I have a good feeling that Wonnum will be a decent pro, despite pretty modest athletic skills...

He’s my pick too. It’s an extremely close call whether he’ll get to us. I’d love it if some team like TB traded up to snag Jordan Love in front of us and LV, and it helped Kinlaw fall to us...

I just don't understand this logic and I've seen it on this forum a lot in the past few months. Braden Smith is one of the highest rated RT's in the league. Why would we draft a new RT and kick him inside to RG when he's proven to be a top RT?
A quality RG could be found for much less than a quality RT ($$ and/or draft capital) and would make much more sense.
I get the confusion. My thought is that, if Castonzo comes back, you’ll need a successor soon anyway since he’s already talking about retirement. A 1st Round OT could park at RT until needed at LT. Smith could move on to RG to get our weak link (Glowinski) out of the starting unit, and move back to RT when Castonzo retires. It would improve us now and secure the future. While I don’t find it to be the best course of action, I would do it if the DTs and WRs I like are gone...-

I really like your point. A lucky few get a truly franchise QB, and the rest hopefully have a QB they can win with.

My Day 3 value picks:
Jeremy Chinn, S, S. Illinois
Jared Mayden, S, Alabama
Davon Hamilton, NT, Ohio St.
Bravvion Roy, NT, Baylor
McTelvin Agim, DT, Arkansas
Michael Ojemudia, CB, Iowa
Stephen Sullivan, TE, LSU
Mitchell Wilcox, TE, S. Florida
Mike Danna, DE, Michigan
Bryce Sterk, DE, Montana St.

FA: Clowney
Re-sign: Castonzo, Haeg, Funchess, Jonathan Williams
Draft:
1) Javon Kinlaw, DT, S. Carolina. Sigh. I’d love to have the QB position locked down better, but I don’t see Ballard reaching for Love here. The guy wouldn’t be that great of a value at the end of the 2nd. People have talked themselves into believing otherwise. Kinlaw, on the other hand, is everything they say about him.
2) Prince Tega Wanogho, OT, Auburn. Has the raw power we want in an OL and the athleticism of an elite LT. Needs a lot of technique work, but he came a long way since his first OL snap at Auburn (he never played on OL in HS, and didn’t know what football was before that...)Trade #44 down to #58 or so, ‘cause that’s what CB does when he thinks his prospect isn’t valued as highly by other teams. Pick up an extra 3rd rounder here.
2) Denzel Mims, WR, Fla. SB stud. If someone else takes him first, Van Jefferson gives us a great young route runner, which we lack right now.
3) Logan Stenberg, OG, Kentucky. Mauler who loves to finish - would fit right in. We were so lucky to have five 16-game starters on the line. It won’t happen again. In the absence of a franchise QB, ensuring a top running offense sounds like a great plan to me.
3) Anthony Gordon, QB, Wash. St. A second young QB to develop. Bet hedging is sometimes a good idea.
4) Jeremy Chinn, S, S. Illinois. Has traits CB will love, starting with his 6’3”frame.
5) McTelvin Agim, DT, Ark. Thought about him in the 4th. Our undertackles took a step back this year - here’s an athletic and versatile guy to play either DT spot.
6) Eli Wolf, TE, Ga. A lot of late Round TEs I like. Switched it up with this EWS standout who looked like a stud receiver. I also like Wilcox and Sullivan here.
6) Parnell Motley, CB, Okla. Very productive with 13 pd this year. Checks boxes too. Good guy to develop.
7) Jordan Johnson, C, UCF. Quite a character. Vocal vegan, future broadcaster, and his specialty is supposed to be getting to the second level and hitting LBs (even though he’s 320 lbs).

Eh, why? Like... whenever I make comparisons prospect to pro and especially to MVP/future HOF type of players, I almost always mean it as a stylistic comparison, rather than as an expectation for similar success.
Maybe this cues a new conversation as to what type of QB we should be looking for. One could argue that with a Top-3 OL and a declining WR corps, we should be patterning ourselves after Tenn. Run the dang ball, and when the D starts committing eight men into the box, it should be that much easier to throw. If that becomes our strategy, we should be looking for a QB that doesn’t take negative plays, rather than one who plays loose and free with the football (like Mahomes and, presumably, Love)...

Funny , the different perspectives out there. I would use almost the same logic FOR drafting Kinlaw. I want a sure fire star (Kinlaw), rather than a potential lingering Problem (Love).
