1. I know this topic has been killed in many posts. But I have to say again that I hate this offense. There is nothing to ever cause the defense to hesitate. They pretty much know when a run or pass is coming. Compare that to what Wilson and RG3 get to do. They have much better running attacks, but they will run multiple plays out of the same formation. We telegraph everything.

That said. Luck just threw a lot of bad passes.

Prepare to be stoned for that last comment.. Heh

I do agree with you though. The O-line had one of its better games in pass protection in A LONG time yet the execution and passes thrown left a lot to be desired.

I still don't get how you overthrow a 6'6" receiver, especially one you've thrown to for the last 4 years. And lets not talk about the clean pocket, overthrow by a mile - pass he threw to Brazill, who was WIDE OPEN in the endzone.

I think the offense is pretty much at its peak and we are going to have to hope the defense can keep teams under 20pts because the offense has severely struggled to get there.

  2. The guy has consistently been out of position in pass coverage and has missed A LOT of tackles he normally makes. He's not had a good season at all based off what he's done in years past. I thought this scheme would have really benefited him but it hasn't. He's taken a step back this year.

  3. B- (must stop dropping easy passes, must start making hard catches) not that he hasnt made some tough catches but he needs to step his game up, HOWEVER, he is a rook, so was Garcon. Garcon is much better 2nd 3rd years. i think he's got a high ceiling .... if he gets an A or A+, then he's already great. not the case.

Who are you talking about? I think you're in the wrong thread....

  4. im sick of arians getting all this credit for the team. when i watch the games and see luck in 3rd and forever multiple, multiple times because of arians stupid delayed draws and screens. dont get me wrong draws and screens work great but when you run them more often then your normal plays, youre not foolin anyone. let me guess heres the gameplan for next week ballard up the middle for 7 or 8, then a draw for -4 then a screen for -5 then luck gets sacked or hurried cause our line sucks. sounds like the same situation pittsburgh had with him. AND P.S. if anyone of importance is reading VONTAE DAVIS, CASSIUS VAUGN, DARRIUS BUTLER, TOM ZIBIwhatever, AND OUR ENTIRE DEFENSIVE SECONDARY (EXCLUDING BETHEA OF COURSE) ARE ABSOLUTLY HORRIBLE GET A CLUE PLEASE!!!!!

Excluding Bethea?? Bethea has looked lost all season. Its by far been his worst season as a Colt. He's missed easy tackles, completely hung out his DB's to dry by over playing the wrong reads, and has just not been the player he's been in previous years.

As for Vontae, yes he got picked on during the game yesterday, but my god how many circus catches did AJ make on him? He blanketed his receiver pretty much every play, but I just have to credit the Texan receivers for the insane amount of crazy catches they had yesterday. If I were Vontae I would have been frustrated as hell because it just seemed that no matter how well he was covering the receiver they just seemed to catch it. ALL of your greats have a DAY against them like that. When healthy and playing he's BY FAR been the best player in the secondary.

Vaughn is just bad period. The cushions he's giving receivers is ridiculous. He pretty much takes himself out of plays from the start. He will be replaced with another top flight corner next year to go with Vontae.

  5. Arians said Ballard reminded him of the Edge.

I'm starting to believe it. Just imagine what this kid will do with a good O-Line in front of him.

I've been saying this for a while. He's always moving forward after contact. Doesn't have that elite speed, but he's hard to take down and can wear on a defense over time. He just gets so much better as the game goes on and they keep feeding him. All of this completely reminds me of James and I'm all for having another back with his similar running abilities.

Arians needs to keep him involved and in rhythm. We have a true gem on this team with Vick and Reggie even stated he was the most impressive guy on the team. That says A LOT coming from Reggie.

    The guy's a beast...

i don't pay too much attention to contracts, salary cap info, but....i think the vast majority of contracts have any out after the 3rd year, so the team doesn't take a hit if the player is released and after the player has received a hefty signing bonus. i think it chris mortenson who said every nfl contract is pretty much 3 years.

It really depends on the contract and the way they are structured. For example, Mathis' last contract was a 5 yr $30MIL deal, however they front loaded it so in the first 3 years he got ~26MIL of that $30MIL while the last 2 years were just base pay of $2MIL. If he wanted out or the Colts cut him in year 4 I believe the Colts would have been accountable for that 2MIL in base pay for that year but would have owed him nothing for year 5. Reggie's 2nd contract was also structured this same way. Most of the contracts, the 4-6 year ones, are front loaded it seems unless they happen to get restructured early on, and Freeney's I think was, and then contracts tip the other way, which I believe is very risky and something GM's try to avoid a la Freeney's ending 19MIL year.

  7. Really? You give everyone a month? A single month to adapt to the speed and violence of the NFL, while learning the complex playbooks that the NFL requires? wow.

Sure they where drafted to the NFL for a reason...the same reason as everyone else so that certainty doesnt give them an advantage over everyone else to lead a prolific offense..And yes they are almost a full season in, and that is why we have seen the improvement of TY Hilton (who, remember struggled with drops early on), Coby Fleener has begun to make plays he wasnt making in week 4. Vick Ballard wasnt the starter early on but has taken that job and run with it. Brazill is now getting playing time and even scored a TD...Not bad for a rookie taken in the 6th huh? Ask Mathis how he did his rookie year..would you have predicted him to become the player he has been after his first year? No..So why do you expect these guys to? Andrew Luck has played great, despite being behind a horrid and deteriorating offensive line. (which is the number 1 reason why this offense isnt living up to your unreasonable expectations).

This is an aggressive offensive system, BA does like to take shots...But we also got 2 extremely fast wrs in avery and Hilton, an athletic TE in Fleener and a crafty vet and excellent route runner in Reggie. Why wouldnt we want to? And yes, most plays do have a built in checkdown, that Andrew Luck is more then welcome to take. So i dont see how this system is holding him back. maybe combination of having a weak Oline for the first time in his career, mixed in with the speed of the defense is making him rush or ignore his reads. Isnt that a possibility?

Really? You give everyone a month? A single month to adapt to the speed and violence of the NFL, while learning the complex playbooks that the NFL requires? wow.

They have rookie mini-camps and OTA's that are in May and June. Countless voluntary workouts in between, which I believe rookies are required to participate in unless there is a reason like Luck's which a player has yet to graduate and isn't allowed to participate, AND training camp. That's before they even play a game. Then there are the 4 preseason games. A little over 4 months to get acquainted with the NFL and to adapt to the "speed and violence" of the game. I was giving them another 4-5 weeks after that and that's being generous. As I said, the rookie excuse is pretty much gone after 4-5 weeks. I guess my interpretation of "rookie mistake" is MUCH different than yours.

And yes they are almost a full season in, and that is why we have seen the improvement of TY Hilton (who, remember struggled with drops early on)

So, to you, drops are considered a rookie mistake? That's called execution as I'm sure he was learning to catch at a very early age.

Coby Fleener has begun to make plays he wasnt making in week 4.

Had 6 catches for 82 yards in the Chicago game WEEK 1. He couldn't catch a cold in the preseason.

Ask Mathis how he did his rookie year..would you have predicted him to become the player he has been after his first year?

Mathis was a 4th round draft pick and was primarily a special teams guy the whole first year. Once he got in the DE rotation, the following year, he shined, and I have no doubts that if he would have been put in the rotation from the start he wouldn't have had any issues then.

Andrew Luck has played great, despite being behind a horrid and deteriorating offensive line. (which is the number 1 reason why this offense isnt living up to your unreasonable expectations).

Of course its his O-line thats causing him to throw into double and triple coverage, staring down his receivers, or holding on to the ball too long /sarcasm. Those are HIS choices, NOT what his O-line is MAKING him do. Obviously we have differing opinions on Luck. He's played ok, but has pretty much plateaued so far. He's still making the same decisions he was earlier in the season. What he did early on isn't much different from what he's done now. Sure he's thrown for a crap ton of yards, but as I tried to explain to someone else on here POINTS win games NOT yards, and we are barely getting enough points to squeak these wins out.

Unreasonable expectations? Why? Because I feel the offense isn't being used to help their deficiencies along the line? We can all see that the O-line can't hold up for the time required to run these plays, however why is it that our Coach continues to put that line AND Luck in helpless situations?

This is an aggressive offensive system, BA does like to take shots...But we also got 2 extremely fast wrs in avery and Hilton, an athletic TE in Fleener and a crafty vet and excellent route runner in Reggie. Why wouldnt we want to?

As you just stated in the quote above "despite being behind a horrid and deteriorating offensive line", why would you continue running plays that you know the O-line can't withstand in?

So i dont see how this system is holding him back.

Its got nothing to do with holding him back, which is the argument of some of the people on here. Its got everything to do with using the players to their strengths and playing smart football, not "fancy" football. THAT's been my whole point and why I believe the team (offense) is better than they've shown. Luck went from being one of the smartest, accurate QB's in college to the reincarnation of Brett Favre in the NFL. Point blank, he's being asked to do and be more than he has to, which is indirectly affecting the guys in front of him and around him.

Again, I'm not going to sit here and play the "rookie excuse" card. I GUARANTEE these guys wouldn't sit here and blame their mistakes on the part of being a "rookie".

  8. Guys-

Not sure how relevant it is, but BA said Manning was not even allowed to run no huddle until his second year, so Luck has already been given more than Manning was. I hope next year Luck is allowed to run no huddle, and call the plays himself. I am sure Pagano has realized Luck's strenghts of being mobile and to utilize them, and to give him more say in what is going on at the line of scrimmage, IMHO and of course a bit of hope

As a QB coach at that time I doubt he had much influence on what OC Tom Moore wanted to do. That was also Tom Moore's first year with the team.

  9. No...But with 6 rookies and basically everyone in their first year of this system playing with arguably the worst Oline in the league its very impressive.

They are almost a full season in.. I can understand that argument 4 to 5 games in, but right now these guys know pretty much what to expect. They've pretty much flat-lined for the entire season and honestly haven't really gotten any better. I believe they are better than just 22 a game, however I don't think the offense as a whole is being utilized to their strengths but moreso to what a certain coach wants them to do and try to be, which obviously they aren't. Too much cuteness and not enough smart football on the offensive side of the ball. Sure, the record is great, but they made getting those wins much harder than it should have been.

I guess I'm not one to make excuses for guys who have been playing the game for a long time and are in the NFL for a reason. Like I said, the first couple of games, sure, but now? No...

  10. also dont forget the penaltie on bethea which was ridiculous, the penalty on Foukou which was agian ridiculous...on 3rd down both of them.

I though while the first Arians challenge was premature, it was a drop IMO. Also wasnt TY knee down before the feet touch out of bounds?

the only call that went our way was the false start on special teams i think

I was screaming at the TV about that catch by TY. He had the ball secured with a knee down before he went out of bounds. I can't be too upset about Arians throwing the flag on Wrights reception but unless it could be a turnover or something like that you HAVE to hold on to that challenge especially that early in the game. That lead to TY's reception being not being challenge-able nor Chris Johnson's fumble. Those are possession changing plays, Wrights was not as I'm pretty sure that play was on 2nd down. Arians baffles me at times with his management "calls".

  11. I think his future is pretty secure. There's no need for the team to invest in new rb's

Completely agree.. I REALLY like the trio of Brown, Ballard, and Carter. I just wish Arians would give them more opportunities to allow them to get in a rhythm along with the O-line.

  12. Although Luck didn't have a great day throwing the ball, he still came up big in the 4th quarter to get the win. But there was something us that surprised me in that game and it was the Colts defense. The defense held Chris Johnson to only 44 yards rushing and his longest was 8 yards. And the Colts defense had to interceptions in the game and sacked Jake Locker a few times. I have seen defenses in the past like this with other teams, but not with the Colts. Is this a sign that our defense is getting better, or was it a fluke because we were playing the Titans?

The defense has been better than what they've been credited for. In their wins they've pretty much limited teams to 20 points or less with the exception pf Green Bay and Detroit. They've been indirectly accountable for the continuous offensive turnovers and that's made their points given up look skewed.

The times that the point totals have gotten out of hand is the same games where the offense has turned the ball over way too much.

    Chicago - 41 points 5 turnovers

    Jets - 35 points 4 turnovers

    Patriots - 59 points 4 turnovers

    Detroit - 33 points 3 turnovers

By no means is this defense dominating but they've held their own, but have also been hung out to dry too much by the offense. Anytime you are giving an offense 3-5 extra possessions a game especially on short fields, which have happened a couple times, points are going to be accumulated.

6 teams to 20 points or less. 22 given up to Jax which was the defenses fault for the blown coverage, and 23 yesterday in which the defense gave up 16.

Once the offense can get the turnovers down this defense is good enough to keep teams limited enough for the offense to come through. The playoffs are going to be very interesting.

  13. Easily the best team of Mannings career. That defense was outstanding. #1 in points allowed, #1 in pass defense, and I believe top 10 in run defense. Bob was DPOY that year as well.

That should have absolutely been another Superbowl year but San Diego ended that dream..

  14. 2 calls to keep the same drive alive

I still cant understand how it was a holding by Fokou if he didnt even put a hand in that Titans player

He leveled the guy.. However it was within 5 yards so it was completely legal. The pass interference on Bethea was terrible.

  15. Well, Bruce Arians has been Peyton Manning's, QB coach, and an O coordinator for Ben Roethlisburger and cuurently HC/O Coordinator for Andrew Luck. He might even be courted for a HC job next season on another team next year. All the while all the real experts hash out what he really should do here on the Colts fan forum. ;)

“If you listen to the fans, you’ll be sitting with them soon enough.” Buddy Ryan, Brian Cashman, and Bill Polian.**

He doesn't need to listen us and just like in Pittsburgh he'll be the reason for his demise..

  16. Yeah I dismiss the nonsense from Pittsburg. The proof of the pudding is in the tasting. They're still no better. Arians wasn't the problem.

Arians cannot make the Oline execute. The protection problems are on them, Grigson and the reality of our situation. Not BA.

Roethlisberger has been out 3 games and is probably having one of his best statistical seasons of his career. His sacks are down A LOT, has a 100 QB rating, and has a 4 to 1 TD to Int ratio.

They could easily be sitting at 9-3 or 8-4 had he been playing.

Its all about playing to the strengths of your personnel and Arians is to incompetent to realize that...

  17. If superbowls are the ultimate yardstick; BA's 2 SB wins > 1 PM win. BA was a fomer college quarterback, you have to assume he knows there are lots of improvements that still can be made.

Lebeau is credited for the Superbowl wins far more than Arians. Like I said in another thread, there is a reason Lebeau is still in Pittsburgh while Arians was shown the door.

And 22 points per game is nothing to be scared of.
