  1. One of the boxes Ryan seems to be checking on his newest acquisitions is special teams.  It has been a long time since the Colts had excellent coverage on kicks and punts.

Sergio Brown got some buzz last year as a ST Pro Bowler.  Colt Anderson has a great ST rep; Philly fans have mentioned this.  Draft pick Jonathan Newsome was enthusiastic about ST in his interviews; his skill set translates well to special teams.

Loucheiz Purifoy has experience as a gunner. Andrew Jackson and Dewey McDonald could both be special teams monsters.  Add Josh McNary, Josh Gordy, and the ADONGO from our present roster, and we may be looking at special team coverage like a stampede of wildebeests.

You forgot to mention our last line of defense and the most dangerous of them all...

    Pat MacAfee!

  2. I don't think Attaochu is going to be there at 59. He's looking like a fringe first-round guy.

I don't see first round, but I am counting on him slipping a bit.  Luck plays a major part in all of these.  If you would prefer to substitute Marcus Smith (and by your signature, I'm guessing you would), feel free.  Attaochu just happens to be one of the players that I hope falls to us, and I figured I'd put an optimistic spin on my mock.

  3. It has been a long while since I've attempted one (since my last one was ridiculed because I wanted to trade away Peyton Manning for a #3 pick to get Matt Kalil, and I tend to be sensative to criticism :sarcasm:).  I figured I'd give it another shot.

Keep in mind that I want Delano Howell to start at safety and Khaled Holmes to start at center at least until they get injured or prove unworthy of the spots.  That gives us an opportunity to draft players with skills to mold into eventual starters.  If it looks to you like I've reached for players or expected players to fall, keep in mind that ALL of these things are predictions and not reality.  I'm sure my prediction will be wrong, as will yours.

    Round 2:

    Jeremiah Attaochu OLG Georgia Tech

I like the old NYG approach to pass defense.  If you can rush the passer consistently, your DB's can have fun and create plays.

    Round 3:

    Daniel McCullers NT Tennessee

Josh Chapman is the only NT we have on the roster (even though Art Jones and Montorri Hughes can play the position), and we need our run stuffers to stay fresh if we want third and long situations.

Round 4 (trade our 5 and next years 5 to move up):

    Victor Hampton CB/S South Carolina

Physical corner who loves to hit and has good range.  Good in press if we need him to step in on dime situations, but I would like to test him out at safety.  I'm counting on Pagano and our locker room to handle any character concerns.

    Round 6:

    Alden Darby S Arizona State

Great character leader and intelligent player.  Would be great on special teams until he steps up into a starting spot.

    Round 7:

    Justin Britt OT/OG Missouri

Good build and athleticism, but needs to learn how to block in the NFL and finish or sustain blocks.

    Potential Free Agents:

    Josh Allen C Louisiana-Monroe

Needs to learn how to make line calls, but has a chance to learn.

    Randell Johnson OLB Florida Atlantic

Athletic and good in coverage.  Needs to learn from the master (Mathis) how to get to QBs.

    Jerry Gates S Bowling Green

Player who has fun on the field on looks custom built for special teams.

  4. Who cares if he's overrated, De La Puente is better than Costa and Holmes.

De La Pente is not a fit for our needs.  We already have a young center in Holmes who has the tools to be better than De La Puente.  If you want a center to be a starter until Holmes is absolutely ready, go with Goodwin.  He is better than De La Puente by a pretty substantial amount, and he would be a better mentor and teacher for Holmes.

  5. Is Mack noticeably better than Saturday was in his prime years? Of course it sure would be Great to be Stout at that position.

When all these Yokells are clamoring for all these Former Undrafted Free Agents to be signed as the ANSWER, well, $8M per for a Center, he better be a Hall of Famer.

Mack is better than Saturday was in his prime (I know this is blasphemy, but hear me out). Saturday was great because of his capacity to understand the defenses and call up the best protection. He was also a great pass protector. In the run game, he was just ok (but he had his moments). He was always great, but he wasn't ever the absolute best. He benefited from his QB play.

Mack excels at pass protection AND run blocking. The guy is a monster on the line. He is also smart enough that, when paired with Luck, they would be able to quickly analyze opposing defenses. Mack has better physical tools than Saturday had, and it shows at times. Give him a QB like Luck, and he will terrorize the line of scrimmage.

  6. I think BDLP or Wendell would be horrible additions. We don't need another average (or slightly above) center, even if he is young. Holmes was already drafted to be our center of the future, and he has all of the tools to be better than either of them. If we absolutely have to get another center, I'd want Mack (because he IS the best center in the league) or Goowdin.

All the complaints about Goodwin being too old are extremely short-sighted. We don't need him for 10 years; we just need him for one or two, until Holmes is ready to step up. Goodwin is better than BDLP (don't bother trying to change my mind on this, I already believe it), and Wendell is out of the question (read "worse than Satele"). If we cannot get Mack, Goodwin can teach Holmes how to be a great pro.

In my eyes, it's Mack or Goodwin. Anyone agree?

  7. Funny how some of you are screaming for Evan Dietrich-Smith.  He was signed by Green Bay as a college free agent, cut, signed by Seattle, cut, signed again by Green Bay, backed up a shot Jeff Saturday, and then finally got to play.  You make it sound like he is a word beater.  How is he much different than Phil Costa?

He rated higher on a website...

  8. The #Bucs agreed to terms with G/C Evan Dietrich-Smith, they announced. Source says it’s a 4-year deal worth $14.25M overall.

Ugh, Options at Center starting to look limited. Growing possibility we draft one?

I highly doubt we draft one.  Khaled Holmes will get his chance before that happens.  Unless one happens to be the absolute best player available, it should be highly unlikely.
