How? The wrestling limit is 285lbs
Let's just say the restaurants in Indianapolis did some serious business on the weekend of the combine.
-
And in the 7th round, the Colts select William Howard Taft, offensive guard, Yale. 6'0", 340, also wrestled in college.
-
Lonnie Ballentine or Jonathan Dowling. If one goes, trade up to get the other one.
-
Prototypical height/weight/speed for a 3-4 pass rushing OLB (yes, 4.7 is just fine for that position, that's where most of the top guys in the league right now were timed at). Good fit.
-
Well, I think Mewhort fills a need and Moncrief is great value where he was taken, so I'm unsurprised to log on here and see people complaining about how Mewhort wasn't great value and Moncrief doesn't fit a need.

You can be number 1 in Carolina, and defenders will eat you alive... even Batman needed Robin to help out from time to time. As a Colt Nicks has the benefit of having not 1, but 4 other superheros on the field at the same time. Not just Cam doing his Superman impersonation.
We're the gorram Justice League!
-
Colts over Seahawks.
-
I agree. It is a steal. We have the cap space but I would imagine a trade would be contingent on him re-doing his deal.
Carolina is the biggest off-season mystery.
I think Carolina's offensive plan is to have Cam snap the ball to Cam, who then hands off to Cam, who then pitched the ball back to Cam for the flea flicker, who then fakes the deep pass to Cam after thinking better of it and instead dumps the ball off to Cam, who then laterals to Cam, who runs it in for a touchdown.

Even though there's probably not a player in the 3rd round as good as him, I would value a 3rd round, say, safety more than yet another WR, even a good one. We just don't need one right now.

The argument was that, if a player was to find themselves in a similar situation then they would likely be suspended. Similarly, Sean Payton was suspended for the bounty-gate debacle. These punishments not only hurt the player but hurt the team as well, since they were without one of their players or coaches.
Therefore, it may be considered unfair if Irsay was simply to receive a fine, or maybe a suspension, because this doesn't really affect the team in any way. One way to punish both Irsay and the team would be to take away draft picks.
Yes, but, there is absolutely no precedent for the NFL to take away draft picks based on a non-football-related incident. The NFL has only used that sanction in things like Bountygate and Spygate, plus tampering cases.
-
According to what I've read, a conviction for a single count of possession of a controlled substance carries a potential term of three months to 3 years in prison. The judge can also choose a lesser penalty, like probation and counseling.
So if Irsay doesn't get 12 years for this, was he "punished accordingly"? Or should he be penalized to the fullest extent of the law? "Punished accordingly" is not a straightforward statement.
Realistically?
0 jail time would not be inconsistent with "punished accordingly" for first offense schedule IV possession and first offense misdemeanor DUI. And that would be true whether he's Jim Irsay, Colts Owner, or Jim Smith, Shoe Salesman.

I saw an argument about how 10mph isn't dangerous. If he was under the influence (of anything) it is morally reprehensible.
The problem for the NFL is the owners ARE the NFL and have been handing out fines and suspensions for this type of behavior. Suspensions hurt teams and not just players. The Bob McNairs and Jerry Richardson's will take this very seriously.
It's not that it can't be dangerous, some of us were just pointing out that, statistically speaking, a vehicle impacting a pedestrian at 10 miles per hour or under is extremely unlikely to cause a fatality. Can it? Yes. But the point is, the rate of speed makes an enormous difference. Not in terms of DUI prosecution, since it's strict liability (assuming intoxication is voluntary), but if we're talking morality, a guy under the influence creeping home way under the speed limit is being negligent, a guy under the influence screaming down the road at twice the speed limit is demonstrating rather depraved recklessness.

If it were Adderall, this wouldn't have happened. He'd have been driving better, and wouldn't have been pulled over. Just kind of the irony with this whole drug classification system...
Well, I think that's probably a discussion for another day. Just saying that Schedule IV drugs, on the whole, are generally fairly benign (defined as "low potential for abuse").

Relevant quote:
So we're still not sure what he actually had.
We know some things that it's NOT, though, like Oxy, Adderall, Percocet, Vicodin, etc.
-
no i think that's childish
Thanks, Buzz Killington.
-
Don't mean to downplay the seriousness of the situation, but if that's true, that's way less troubling than him having Percocet, which is what I had assumed he had. Both opioids, both addictive, but one is more serious than the other. Like marijuana vs. heroine...
Do you have a link?
Well, we already knew he didn't have opioids, since we knew the charges were for Class IV controlled substances.
The guy isn't going to jail on a first offense for driving 25mph under the speed limit under the influence of Ambien (or equivalent).
-
The only other times I can think of were when the broncos got pinched for some salary cap shenanigans and back in the 70s the dolphins lost a first rounder for hiring Shula away from the colts without permission.
I think it happens occasionally in tampering situations as well.

preliminary counts
Of possession of Schedule IV substances.
Which is really the least-felonious felony you can be charged with. I meant that literally, possession is a Class D felony in Indiana, the lowest class of felony, and schedule IV substances are the lowest level substance you can be charged with a felony for possession of.
-
Some of you seem quite certain the Colts won't be losing a draft pick. I'm curious what evidence or facts you have to be so certain. I really hope the organization doesn't lose a draft pick but I'm unsure whether it will happen or not. I'm not disagreeing with you that they won't I'm just asking for what evidence or facts you have that it won't happen.
Because I can't think of an instance where that sanction was used for conduct outside the game itself.
-
At 10 miles per hour, a fatal impact with a pedestrian is incredibly unlikely. We're talking soft tissue if anything.
Ten miles per hour. One ton of vehicle. It would do a lot more damage than you think. That is a deadly combination.
Fatalities from a 10mph vehicle impacting a pedestrian are in the ballpark of 1%, in fact.
-
Eeeeeeeeeh, he was aight.
I'm pretty ambivalent really.
-
I'm definitely not the biggest Irsay supporter, but sheesh man. If the NFL didn't take the Colts from Robert in 1984 no way in heck Jim loses them over DUI.
I suspect certain people here just want them to take the team away from Irsay so that the new owner can fire Grigson and Pagano, bring back Polian, and hire Jon Gruden.
-
Amen. A real heroin epidemic in my area stemming for Oxy. It's decaying society.
FYI I don't think it's Oxy, the felony counts are for schedule IV substances, Oxy is a schedule II substances. Schedule IV substances are your standard Valium/Xanax/etc. stuff.

I see that the Chicken Little Brigade around here is having a field day.
