Just because we did it at points last year, doesn’t mean we'll do it again this year.

Or didn’t you notice 7 of the 10 draft picks going to defense?

And notice that my post was about what must teams do, not just the Colts.

you started off your post with "no, not doable, not even close".... yet it was pretty doable last year. so, you were wrong...

and doesn't really matter, but pretty sure you edited that last part of your post to hedge your bet after i posted lol...

ratio of draft picks really doesn't matter in terms of who makes the 53. those drafted are not a given to make the 53, and those that do will likely push others of the same position out. taking 7 on D simply means we're good on OL now (as opposed to last year), good on TE, good on QB, good on RB, and needed to improve the quality of depth on D.

I don't think it’s far fetched at all. Not everyone sees things through Colts Blue colored glasses.

I've been plenty critical and questioned a lot of players, so I don't see myself as having Colts Blue glasses on. I'm just wondering what your reasoning is.

Here's my reasoning that he makes it.

-The IndyStar writers were extremely high on him last year going into the season and suggested he would be the clear WR2 and X.

-So far he is looking good, and one tweet I think @Chloe6124 posted today called him the star WR of camp so far (I know it's early, but still)

-Ballard has gushed about him lately

-The Colts invested in the recovery hype vids

-Out of all the potential Xs, he has the best all around measureables and college experience/stats on a big D1 stage.

That's the good on him. Here's the non-Colt's Blue glasses on the others.

-Funchess may be very good for us this year, but he's never been a well rounded X

    -Pascal is inconsistent

-Fountain is still raw and is still working on route running.

-He's not competing against TY (Z) or Rogers/Campbell (slot).

-We kept 3 Xs last year, so if it's status quo in 2019, you're saying both Pascal and Fountain beat him out and the Colts are unwilling to give his recovery a shot.

That’s fine. Don’t try and fit a square peg into a round hole. If that’s not his game then so be it.

The way my buddy tells it (he's a crazy OSU fan), is that Parris was pushed into action his soph season (2016) for returns because of an injury or something, and did very well. He was becoming WR1 his junior year (led all WRs) and they didn't want him to continue to both return and be WR1. He led all WRs his senior year too,

He was a returner his Junior year and he muffed a couple punts bad enough for them to pull him off completely.

I thought he was a returner his soph year due to injury of another, and during his junior season they wanted him to focus on WR and let Weber handle KRs?

  5. Not really concerned about Campbell's muffs. He didn't return at OSU, so still learning. Contrary to what a lot folks think, it takes practice and skill to be a returner. He's got plenty of time to learn, and he's not going anywhere. Hines IIRC had issues early too last year, but they seem to be giving him a shot again this year. That's why guys like Rogers and Pascal bring value outside of the WR corp.

I wonder if Sheard's injury will impact any plans for Banogu at SAM. I'm a big fan of him focusing 100% on DE anyway.

I hate the slow roll with Luck. Not because I think he should be out there just to be out there, but more because I hate that the young WRs are not getting the best targets. Looking forward to him getting back into the swing of things.

Cain not making the roster is a silly prediction. Can't think of any reason to say that outside of 1he 1% chance to say I told you so.

Very very silly. One way or another, he'll be a Colt this year. He'll either be on the 53 or PUP (if his recovery is slow). All the gushing about him, and the fact they've immediately inserted him at returns is very telling. Not saying he'll be our return guy, but it shows they know he's got the talent and are confident in his recovery process.

  7. Like I posted in posted in another thread. Week 17 last year... We had 3 STs players (LS/Punter/Kicker) and the remaining 50 were split 25 on O and 25 on D. Of the 25 O, we had 10 OL, 2 QB, 6 WR, 4 RB, and 3 TEs. That doesn't mean we'll start out that way, but point is, having 6 WRs and 4 RBs is not out of the Qs. We run three WR sets a lot more than we run 2 TE sets. And, WRs and RBs are used a lot in the return game whereas TEs are not. Just something to think about.

And @Chloe6124 is spot on about LBs. We had 5 DBs (sometimes 6) and 2 LBs on the field 80+% of the time last year. So unless our D scheme changes drastically, DBs are a premium in our D. I'm not a big fan of Banogu at SAM, but stuff like that (a DE shifting to OLB), also devalues a true 3rd LB in our scheme. A guy like Okereke who can back up all 3 LB positions also provides flex.

I believe that too.....but Ballard keeps harping on 10 lineman. I would go eight with the versatility we have.

It's going to be interesting. Even if we keep 10 OL, that doesn't mean we can't keep both 4 RBs and even 6 WRs. Week 17 depth chart had 10 OL, 2 QBs, 6 WRs, 3 TEs, and 4 RBs. That's still only 25 (less than half) of the 53. Take out the (3) LS, Punter, and Kicker, and that's perfect O vs D balance.

Funchess still gives them the size that we don’t have at WR. Funchess big comp to get resigned is Ebron. I saw ebrons stats and he had most of his receptions in the slot or out wide. He had very few at the tight. They are the same player.

TE and slot routes are very very similar. Alignments are almost the same too. Both are "possession" receivers in 90% of routes . A "bully" slot (typically a big X) is almost the same as a TE, just a few pounds lighter. So yes, they're very similar.

The problem with Funch is he's never been a well rounded X. He's always excelled at the bully slot or possession type routes, and struggled with much of the rest. And keep in mind that Funch was a converted TE in college.

Purely my opinion, but I'd rather have a well rounded X at 6-2 that can play both prototypical X (outside, and with speed), that can also float to big slot, than a 6-4 X that is great at big/bully slot, but struggles on the outside and/or deep.

Ebron's stats would say he's pretty darn good at most routes. His yard/catch average is higher than Doyles, and even higher than the likes of Zach Ertz and other TEs. Ebron's only weakness (vs Doyle and Ertz) is his catch %, but is still 8%+ pts higher than Funch's (which is a lot). His "air yards" ranking was 3rd among TEs, and he was 6th among target quality rating.

Yeah I think chester gets cut this season I think pascal is better anyway

Very different player, and at a different position. Rogers is in the Z/slot bucket competing with Campbell and TY. Pascal is competing at X with Funch, Cain, Fountain, etc.. Pascal is realistically competing with Fountain for that 3rd X spot. Keep in mind we ran with 3 Xs and 2 Z/slots last year on the 53. Campbell has position flexibility, so we could actually keep 3 Z/slots this year and only 2 Xs. Or we could keep 3 of both if we wanted to run with 6 WRs.

Your probably right. If both of them have great seasons we may have our future receivers. It comes a point where we should feel we are set and not draft anyone. Luck needs some stability there for the next few years.

yup. but a lot of wild cards. we certainly have potential, just not a lot of guarantees beyond TY. I'm just super excited for the increased competition. The floors and ceilings of this group going into camp is higher than it's been in a long time.

Could be, but I’m not buying in on Funchess until I see it.

If Cain or Fountain emerges at X as the year goes on, I think it's going to be bad news for Funch.

I truly hope he balls out, I just know he's struggled to be a complete receiver his entire career. If he's limited to possession X and/or slot bully, I just don't see us paying big dollars long term for him if Cain/Fountain are doing well.

Even if he does well, I can see Ballard using a late 2nd or 3rd round WR that fits Funch's physical profile. There were plenty of big bodied WRs that were promising in rounds 2-4. Hell, DK didn't go till the end of the 2nd. Hakeem Butler (6-5, 227) was available in the 4th. IMO, he'll have a better career than DF.

Maybe Cain is TY replacement. A funchess replacement could make more sense. Fountain is going to really have to show something to stay.  If luck can have those four guys the next few years the chemistry is going to be off the charts.

I think TY has 2-3 more years before he starts losing speed. When he does lose a step, he'd make a great slot and could easily prolong his career.

I really don't see Cain as a Z. Especially with our needs for a prototypical X. I could see Campbell as a Z. Campbell could really play anywhere (X, slot, or Z) with his measureables assuming he can beat the press. I think given his speed and shiftiness, he'd be an ideal replacement for Z given it's the most "moving" WR position.

Ideally, I want TY to stick at Z for 2-3 more years, Parris become the speed slot, Cain or Fountain to be the prototype X. In 3-4 years, hopefully Cain has locked down X, and Parris and TY can flip flop.

I could see that happening too. Guess we'll see who performs lights out elsewhere (TE, WR) and see if they want the extra playmaker in one of those two spots?

Purely my opinion, but keeping 4 RBs, and even 6 WRs on top of that would be easy. We can keep less OL and TE this year given the current status. OL is in a much, much better place this year (assuming healthy holds out). Positions are set, and no musical chairs like the first 5-6 games last year. TE too (we have a clear top 3).

Looks like Mr. Wilkins has a couple free weeks to show his wares (pun intended) while Mr. Spencer is sitting in the hot tub!??!

I'm still of the opinion we roll with Mack, Wilkins and Himes like last year!

    I think we roll with 4, and it's not a Wilkins/Ware conversation.

Wilkins is Mack's every down backup, called on when Mack is injured and perhaps late in games. Ware will be more of the short yardage back. Hines is our hybrid/APB. Williams is likely the odd man out.

  16. Dearest Father,

I write to you today to share things that I can not pen to Mother. Man things. My heart is overwhelmed to get back to the men. My battalion has grown beyond my wildest desires. The generals have sent me reinforcements.  Lieutenant Nelson has blossomed into a man that will hold the front line in the face of our treacherous enemies. Lieutenant Mack and Private Hines are eager to command a swift and ferocious cavalry. Gunnery Sergeant Hilton has a much improved group of promising young men. I pray to our Lord every night that my pride and confidence in my men is not sinful. I fear that I, and my men, will not just prevail, but become a butcher of thy enemy.  Pray for my soul father.

  17. @CR91 crazy good job. thank you so much. will like a bunch of your posts a bit later.

    Things of interest to me.

-I'm gonna go ahead and say Cain is a lock for some type of spot.

-Hines got faster? lol. Holy cow.

-I'm pumped to see Houston in a Colt's uni.

-Reich gushed about Rogers, now Ballard gushing about Pascal. Crowded WR room. 6?

-Very happy that they seem to be focusing Banogu on DE. Wish he had more time with Matthis.

    -What happened to S.Ware?

-Glad Fountain is back. He needs every rep he can get.

-It's great Campbell is attaching himself to TY. Soak it in young fella.

I read the article, then I watched the entire series, and honestly, the series made me a bit less optimistic than reading the article. I saw a good hearted young man, with no character concerns, however, he seemed to be a guy who can't handle pressure and adversity too well. I hope I'm wrong.

That's been kinda the dig on him at both scUM and in Detroit. He was given plenty of time to develop IMO. He was asked to be the guy in 17 when KB and GO got injured. He did OK, but still didn't eclipse 1000. In 2018, he let a rookie steal the #1 spot.

I'm just hoping he's matured, and makes the best of a fresh start. He simply needs to make the best of every pass tossed his way, and he'll be fine. He has the potential to be a RZ beast like Ebron.
