With Lucks calf in limbo how much playing time do we think Brissett gets Thursday? Will they treat him as a starting QB and only play him a couple of series. Or maybe not at all.

Good point. I bet he gets a quarter.

I think we will find our more about the new guys when we see them in preseason games. Right now it looks good.

hope we look better than either team playing tonight lol.

can't wait to see the young pups go at it next week.

I wouldn't be surprised if they only kept 3 TEs on the 53 if Doyle is truly healthy. If that's the case, I think they keep Hentges on the PS and let Travis go. Travis's contract expires IIRC at the end of the year, so not PS eligible. If they do keep 4, I think Travis is the 4th with Hentges on the PS.

Love what you said about Chester Rogers. I don’t know what will unfold during roster cuts. I just feel like you this team needs Rogers to stick around. However if Chris Ballard and the coach feel it would be best to let him go, they have a plan in place.

I agree that they will have a plan if they do give him the boot. I'm honestly not a huge Chester fan. I just know he did a lot more last year than people give him credit for. I'd love for the talent to increase across the board so much that he's the odd man out. I just think there's a lot of risk in parting with him this year. Next year when we have answers around PC and DC as WR, as well as solid returners, all if fair game.

Thanks for all the work attempting to elevate the knowledge and discussion for we Colts fans. You did good.
Gotta laugh it got two quick, useless responses about 1/2 of a receiver. Oh well!
Each year our staff will labor at final cut time regarding who to keep for that last couple of spots. Can we cut a guy and sign him back in a week or two when that next injury occurs? We could easily see one or two at final cuts that get trade.
    interest.

     #1 5 DB's.
With our skill level at CB, their coverage and tackling ability, i think we will see 6 DB's, 2 S and 4 CB 10-15% of the time. With Geathers and Moore creating all kinds of Hav-oc around the line of scrimmage.
#2 and the need to score more.
I predict we give up fewer points than last year. I'm 75/25 that way anyway.
     #6
I could see TE being 3 at cut time. And stashing a good blocker on the PS.
About the same amount of 2 TE sets. Because we ARE going to Run the Damn Ball.
#7 Definitely going to see a fair amount of trips right with a WR left.
Lining up Hines or Campbell in the backfield with this. Gonna be devastating IMO.

#8 Let us hope we are stout against the run on 1st down so we have a lot of passing situations. It sure would be nice to be really good at creating quick pressure up the middle. Eberflus is defintely going to rush our lighter DE's inside quite a bit. lol
Thanks again for your effort, contemplating what will be in our Arsenal is pretty exciting.

Thanks BBZ. I was trying to assess our talent, and guestimate our 53. In digging through all the data, figured I might as well type it up and throw it out there for those who enjoy getting in the dirty details. Probably too heavy for some.

I agree on the DB usage. At least vs a good portion of the teams we face. I'm also with you on hoping we can limit the opposing O on first down. iDL is my biggest concern.

While I think our D will be better this year, I think stats will be very similar or a little worse vs the pass than last year simply because of the QBs we'll face. Regardless, I think we'll see more sacks and more INTs this year!

On TEs, I agree. If Doyle is truly healthy, we only need 3. I'd go Ebron/Dolye/Cox with Hentges on the PS. With Doyle and Ebron both expiring at the end of the season, you have to believe they will try to get significant touches for Cox just in case.

The options at WR have me giddy. If everyone stays healthy Reich has an obscene bag of weapons.

  6. 23 minutes ago, Chloe6124 said:

    That makes sense.

I'd love to see PC do well and be able to play all 3 spots. Cain could do that (play all 3) as well if healthy. Having both of those guys performing well will make WR uber stable and allow for so much flexibility in terms of back ups. Until then, I'd just prefer to have a 3 guys who can play both traditional/speed slot and Z.

Having Cain, PC, TY, and Funch healthy and performing would be an embarrassment of riches in terms of flexibility. Very scary.

  7. 54 minutes ago, Chloe6124 said:

Does it matter about where wide receivers play on the field when we have Funch and Ebron who are going to take a lot of snaps in the slot. Not sure it will come down to whether a slot guy stays or not. Do we really need a back up slot I guess is what I am saying.

TE and slot alignments and routes are very similar, to an extent. Desired outcomes however can be very different. TE and "big" or "bully" slot are typically short to medium yardage tosses to big bodied guys, without a lot of separation, and with not much YAC expected. Traditional slot however is a smaller/faster type WR who gets more separation and desires more YAC.

When Funch is playing slot, he'll be more or less another TE. Not much separation, not much YAC. When Rogers or Campbell plays slot, the QB is looking for more separation, and the play is designed for more YAC.

Last year, Rogers took 80+% of his snaps from slot. Pascal and Inman took about 30% of their snaps from slot, and was typically short yardage situations.

As far as Rogers is concerned, I wouldn't call him just a back up slot (to Campbell). First of all, there has been a ton of chatter about Campbell playing not just slot, but outside as well. IMO, when he plays outside, it will not be in short yardage situations (when a big/bully slot is mostly used), so Rogers would likely be the slot while PC is wide. Also, Rogers is the only player that backed up TY last year at Z. He was also a returner. Making PC the primary slot, back up to TY, and returner is frankly a big ask for a rookie. I guess what I'm saying, is if you don't have Rogers, you'll be limited where Campbell can play in certain down/and distance scenarios, while also potentially over burdening him his first year.

Rogers could very well be cut, but it's not a "safe" move at all for the team. Sure he's not flashing, but he does a lot, and has been pretty reliable doing it.

Ware is much more well rounded. Not saying Ford isn't a good power back, but he's not really an every down back. I'd still prefer Ware who can do a decent job at both. D's would have an easier time calling schemes with Ford in the game IMO.

I am a Funchess skeptic.  He was well covered and then Desir just missed the swipe after using bad technique and turning his hips the wrong way.  I am not sold on DF's ability to create separation.

Whoever threw that did a great job BTW.

On the other hand the big body helped shield there.

Funch has never been a separation guy (he was ranked 91st in separation last year). He's a big body. That's why he's struggled on many X routes, but excelled at the shorter slot routes.

Hey ya'll so I never post here, but actually went to Tarleton State with EJ Speed. First of all, it surprised the heck out of me when he was drafted as a LB. From my recollection, he played WR most my time there.

Tried his hand in basketball, but that didn't work out (our basketball team is a lot better than our football team) I graduated last May so this last season is when the new coaches may have transitioned him to LB. Guy is a legit 6'4'', has a lean WR frame, which still surprises me that hes playing LB in the NFL. Humble and quiet guy in class. Wish him the best and hope that he does pan out for us.

From what I read, he was recruited to play QB, converted to WR, but then converted to LB after his redshirt year. All his stats that I saw were on D. Here's his university bio. I'd not that 2018 was not included but he had 106 Ts.

  9. With all the discussion and debate on who will make it, and how many will be kept at certain positions,... Here's some data from last year to help you with your arguments.

What do you our roster will look like per position?

    Below are a few things

    1. A look at 2018's roster numbers by position (from colts.com unofficial depthchart) and the fluctuations (mostly due to injury). I've used games 4, 8, 12, and 16, as points in time. Not including P/K/LS, which always equaled 3 total.

    2. Position allotment on the practice squad to start the 2018 season.

    3. Snap count % to show how much a few certain positions, or certain schemes, are utilized. Also a look at what positions are utilized most on STs.

    4. Potential influences to the 2019 roster make up

    Position: Game 4/8/12/16

    QB: 2/2/2/2
    RB: 3/4/4/4 (3.75 Average)
    Tight End: 4/5/4/3 (4 Average)

Wide Receivers (Total): 5/5/5/6 (5.75 Average)
    -X WR: 3/3/3/3 (X was a bit of a rotating mess)
    -Z WR: 1/1/1/2
    -Slot WR: 1/1/1/1

    O Line (Total) 10/9/10/10 (9.75 Average)
    -LT: 2/2/2/2
    -LG: 2/1/1/1
    -C: 2/2/3/3
    -RG: 2/2/2/2
    -RT: 2/2/2/2

    D Line (Total): 10/10/9/8 (9.25 Average)
    DE: 5/5/4/4
    NT: 2/2/3/2
    UT: 3/3/2/2

    LB (Total): 6/5/6/6 (5.75 Average)
    WILL: 2/2/2/2
    MIKE: 2/1/2/2
    SAM: 2/2/2/2

    DB (Total): 11/11/11/12 (11.25 Average)
    CB: 6/6/5/5
    FS: 3/3/3/4
    SS: 2/2/2/3

Practice Squad going into week 1 position #s
    QB: 1
    TE: 1
    WR: 2
    RB: 1
    OG: 1
    CB: 1
    LB: 1
    DE: 2

    Snap Count Data - Defense
-We used a 2 LB set almost 91% of the time
-We used 3 CB sets 73% of the time
-We used 3 S sets 19% of the time

    Snap Count Data - Offense
-We used 3 WR sets 56% of the time
-We used 2 TE sets 29% of the time
-We used 2 RB sets almost 3% of the time

Snap Count Data - Special teams (average bodies per position per ST play)
    -C: 0.02
    -G: 0.38
    -T: 0.30
    -RB: 0.36
    -TE: 0.59
    -WR: 0.78

-DB: 3.31 (CB and S were almost equal)
    -LB: 2.48
    -DE: 0.76
    -DT/NT: 1.04

    -K: 0.17
    -LS: 0.31
    -P: 0.51

Potential influences to position counts in 2019
    1. We'll see much better passing teams which means more nickel and dime. We played 5 DBs in 90+% of the D snaps last year, More this year?

    2. Because we're facing better Os, we'll have to score more, and score potentially from behind. More WRs this year?

    3. A lot of talk about Banogu taking snaps at SAM. We only used a 3 LB set ~9% of the time. Will this push us to keep only 1 true LB at SAM instead of 2 like last year?

    4. We're breaking in a rook at WR, and FA at WR, and an almost rookie recovering from a major injury. Might we keep 6 WRs to start the year until things settle down?

    5. The TE number fluctuated last year from 3-5 at any point in the season, primarily due to injury.

    6. We ran 2 TE sets 29% of the time las year. With the addition of TE-lite Funchess, do we run 2 TE sets less, or with Doyle back and healthy, do we use 2 TEs more?

    7. By the looks of it, WR has been upgrade big time. Do we see more 3 WR sets, or even 4 this year?

    8. With the big upgrade in terms of QB quality we'll see this year, will we see more 3 DE rush sets?

    9. The OL over the course of 2018 gelled and settled into a very good one. Do we still need to carry 10 if everyone is healthy?

Possibly but Luck said all the x-rays and tests did not show he needed surgery.

I've had a few lower leg injuries. X-rays and scans frankly don't always provide complete info. And the docs that interpret don't always hit the mark. 2 times docs were wrong on me. One time I was told I didn't need surgery and would be fine in 60-90 days. Took me 7 months (would have been quicker to have surgery). Another time, I was told I needed surgery. Instead I spent a month in a boot, and even spent one of those weeks partying on a Central American island. I was 100% in about 60 days and back to playing racket ball. Must have been the rum!

I don't think they are lying about an Achilles situation. I could see however that Luck might have a borderline calf injury that is a judgement call in terms of surgery. And I could see them keeping that out of the public domain.

I'd take Ware over Ford all day long.

depends how he they are to be used, and what they are looking for.

if they are looking for a pure bulldozer kind of guy for only short yardage and goal line, Ford might be better. If you're looking for a well rounded RB who can also succeed in power situations, than SWare is the guy.

I'd be fine with either. Mack is the unquestioned every down guy. Wilkins has a similar profile with a little dance and is probably the guy that takes over if Mack goes down. With SWare, if Mack went down, we'd have two guys that could jump in for "every down" play. That's good to have. But I'm OK with having two similar backs (Mack/Wilkins), and then having a pile driver guy like Ford for those short yardage kind of situations.

Everyone gets more separation when you have a two speed guys on the turf at the same time. With three, gonna be a nightmare for Ds. Everyone gonna be open this year.

I think they are looking for a short yardage power back. Aca'Cedric Ware was not that. AWare would have been more in competition with Wilkins and Mack in terms of "rb type". Ford is probably a more pure power back than Spenser is. Spenser is a power back that can also be a decent every down back.

maybe we should trade fountain to the giants since they need Wrs that could probably make the 5th spot much more easier

I think it really depends on how the coaches see Fountain. Last year he was just plain raw. He's got a very high upside, but also a low floor. If he's improved a bunch at route running, the Colt's may favor him over a guy like Pascal, who has a higher floor, but lower ceiling. Dulin reminds me a lot of the situation Fountain was in last year (raw and from a small school, but high ceiling).

I wouldn't be shocked to see them keep 6 to start the season on the 53. And if they only keep 5, I could see them keeping another 2 on the PS while a rook like Campbell proves himself, and while Cain gets to 100%. Then go down to 5 once things settle down.

If they are confident in Cain's recovery, I'd keep Cain and Funch at X, TY at Z, Rogers at slot, and Campbell who will play all over the place. I'd then probably keep 2 on the PS out of Fountain, Dulin, and Pascal. If I were going to try and trade anyone, I'd try to move Pascal probably. He's got enough film/production that teams might bite. I would not trade Rogers as he's a good safety net for multiple things.

Yup. I think he'll get a least 30% of snaps from slot. Wouldn't be surprised if it was 40+%. Inman spent 29% of his snaps from slot, and Pascal 26%. If Cain gets PT, and Campbell does play outside, Funch could spend a lot of time inside.

From the tweets I have seen I think Funch has been better then Cain so far. I would say Campbell and Cain have been close. I think Cain just sticks our to reporters because of the injuries and him looking good last TC. Then Campbell gets a lot of attention because he is a rookie. I have been disappointed in the local media not covering DF ‘more.

Most, if not all, of what I've seen/heard/read about Funch, is performance in the RZ. I absolutely think he'll be boss there and have all along. Until I start seeing/reading/hearing the same during drills between the 20s, I'm going to be cautious. Hint hint Chloe/CR91 :-)

Not that I agree, but there have been plenty of tweets and articles that have eluded to him being the star. Pretty sure a few tweets from either you or CR91 also shared the opinion. The IndyStar guys definitely said so. Here's one who's actual headline says so.

I agree it's early, but what were seeing IMO is him pushing above 4. Honestly, I'm not sure if I would classify Funch as the firm #2. Sure he's a lock for the 53. But I'm still not sure he'll be the X between the 20s. Whoever that is, will be the true #2. He'll absolutely be the X or bully slot in RZ situations, but he still has to prove he can succeed and be well rounded outside of the RZ.
