As soon as he didn't report, they cleaned out his locker and his team mates raided his locker and passed out his clothing and shoes.  That should tell u what his team mates really thought bout him.  It was very disrespectful and an immature act , but to me it said  a lot.

    They were joking.

That was my feeling to.  The DBs don't have to be as talented, in a broad statement, as a comparable press man 34.  That's how Polian and Dungy used to describe the benefits of  his zone cover 2 when trying to manage an entire roster.  Our recent 34 was just too expensive to get it right.  The 43 zone allows us to invest more talent, high draft picks and money, into the trenches and the pass rush.

Maybe that means we won't be able to build a monster, but settle for a bend no break defense and win games by Luck and Reich's offense.

I think a 3-Tech pass rusher would be extremely valuable to us, and I would prefer that over the traditional edge rusher to combat the quick hitting offenses that seem to be successful

I agree, 3 tech is the biggest need on this team (over CB, WR2, edge or whatever). Could also use DT who can lineup as 1 tech and push the pocket and win 1on1s if teams double the other DT. We have good NTs and enough guys who can rush the passer from interior but none of them are really good at both.

Grady Jarrett is projected to be FA. He's short and wins with leverage, quickness and strength. Can rush the passer and defend the run as 1-gap penetrator. He has played both 1 and 3 tech. I'd throw a bank at him if he hits FA.

Whenever I hear 4-2-5, I remember TCU just like that article quoted. New England has been doing that for a while with 3 safeties allowing it to win and lose a close SB vs Falcons and Eagles. In both cases, they could not stop the run. Teams spread them out and ran from 3 WR formations and got chunk yards vs the Patriots. Good for them, they had Tom Brady but otherwise, they gave up 28 and 41 points in the 2 SBs in 2016 and 2017.

Guys like Mike Pettine and Rex Ryan used dime packages all the time with 3 safeties and 3 CBs to produce pressure, so no matter the scheme, you need the right players. If teams like the Eagles and now the Colts start using multiple receiving TEs to cause serious mismatches, the 3 safety look will continue gaining popularity for Big Nickel, like you said. Lots of work to do for Ballard.

NE used 3-3-5 against the Eagles and they even used 4 safeties on about 20% of their snaps. Can't recall how they started against the Falcons but in the 2nd half they were able to stop the run and used 3 safeties a lot. I think it was 3-3-5 or 2-3-6 (or 3-2-6). Of course by that time Falcons OL was riddled with injuries.

So the article refers to us running a cover 2.  I'm not certain we do, but I'll take it at its word.

Considering our secondary has struggled, what are the attributes needed for a DB to play well in a Zone cover 2?

For Corners, contesting passes are going to be rarer than tackling well, since there will always seems in the zone and a CB won't necessarily be running with his man.  There will always be times where the CB is a few steps away from the receiver, but he has to tackle him quickly.

Also, is there a different responsibility in the run game?

For safeties, cover 2 tends to put both safeties back deep.  Both have deep responsibilities, each splitting the field side to side, as opposed to front to back (where only one would have the true deep responsibility).  It would seem that both safeties have to have a blend of attributes and not be that stark of a difference from each other in terms of skill and body type.

I tend to think that the intent is for us to NOT run much cover 2, but I haven't seen the secondary play in detail.

I haven't seen the secondary play in detail either but the little I can tell from broadcasts, we usually play soft zone and with two deep safeties. So cover 2, 4 or 6 or some kind of mix of those.

Cover 2 doesn't ask much from a corner. Least of pretty much any coverage. I think that's why Ballard wants it, doesn't make much sense to invest in cover 2 corners when those can be found at 7-eleven (quoting Mike Zimmer) and instead invest the most resources at trenches on both sides of the ball and LBs. In theory, I agree with that philosphy.

It's just too easy to get Yards against co cover 2 these days if the QB throwing the ball is good. And our corners can't seem to play well other zones or man, the latter which is an issue for zone corners and an issue for teams that don't invest in corners.

Clark I'd honestly put as best backup tackle in the league. If you watched any of the games he started at LT, he had maybe 1 sack, 2 holding penalties total.  Those who say he's PS material or 3rd-4th string is a VAST overexaggeration.

I'd say that title belongs to Halapoulivaati Vaitai, Eagles backup OT, and their starter at LT last year.

As for Smith.. usually I'm not sold on rookies early but he looks very good.

  6. From recent Holder article at athletic

    Quote

The new defensive play caller, who was installing a brand-new scheme, cued up some examples of what he hoped his players would emulate.

You might say he aimed a bit high. Eberflus showed his defenders film cutups of the Steel Curtain-era Pittsburgh Steelers. He dived into the archives and pulled out clips of Tony Dungy’s Tampa Bay Buccaneers defenses. Then he threw in some of Dungy’s Colts teams and Lovie Smith’s Chicago Bears defenses of the 2000s.

The Colts don’t have anyone the likes of Mean Joe Greene, Warren Sapp or Dwight Freeney, but Eberflus was attempting to make an important point nonetheless: This scheme, which at its core is, similarly, a Cover 2-based system, can be wildly successful.

Defense has talent issue but cover 2 based defenses have struggled pretty mightily this decade. Personally not even fan of soft zones in general though teams like Panthers have made it work fairly recently.

Golladay took his place.  Tate only had 40 more yards that Golladay and Jones had 2 more TDs. If you have been paying more attention you would have noticed that Golladay had already pretty much took his spot away.

Tate usually plays in the slot, Golladay usually outside and the Lions most used personnel is 11 personnel. Tate's snap count actually has increased from last year.

I distinctly remember Polian saying that he was sorry he missed out on Andy Dalton.  Dalton was taken in the second round of the 2011, or the Castonzo draft.  We took Ben Ijilana in the 2nd, who was looking to be a good olineman before blowing out his knee twice.  Drake Nevis in the 3rd....a three tech who was cut when we went to the 34 under Grigson.  (A good player cut for scheme change)

So it seems he had a lot of say in the 2011 draft based upon his past comments.

Drake Nevis was cut by 3 other 4-3 base defense using teams after we cut him and ended up in the CFL.

  9. Raiders defense sucked against us and the 49ers. Offense is different but their LT (Kolton Miller) got injured early on against the 49ers. They didn't score points nor were they able to move the ball after that. He was injured earlier this year too and Raiders were terrible on offense after that until their bye week during which he seemed to heal a bit until aggrevating his knee against the 49ers.

I don't think they gave up after our game, they (esp. defense) gave up during the 49ers game when 3rd string QB was ripping them to shreds.

A broken clock is still right twice a day...  So Chris Polian is halfway there with AC pick.  Was there another?

Depends which years were actually Chris Polian drafts. Hughes was a bust for us but he turned out to be a good player.

Unless you are Matt Millen, all of whose draft picks were out of the league within 5 or 6 years except Megatron, pretty much most GMs will have at least 1 or 2 picks that work out over a span of 5 years.

He did manage to have more hits than that. In his first draft the hit on his 3 first picks (Jeff Backus, Dom Raiola and Shaun Rogers).. so not sure how much influence he had on that draft, lol. But he did find Andre Goodman, Cory Redding and Cliff Avril later on.. Of course that's terrible draft record for so many drafts and high picks.

I'm gonna stick him in the top 3 partly because I'm a hommer. But also look at everything he has went through not just physically but mentally and getting better each week. He's had to play with virtually no receivers except Ebron. And was still putting our team in a position to win.

I expect Luck to be firmly in the top 5 and possibly top 3 soon due to regression from Brady/Brees as he gets more comfortable with his shoulder and the scheme along with getting better receivers.

Yeah because of the way Mahomes and Goff are playing, he may be 6th right now. My obvious Top 3 are Brady, Rodgers, and Brees then you have Mahomes, Goff, and Luck. I think Luck should be at 4 only because he is more proven but the other 2 kids are playing Great and have the 2 best teams in the NFL.

Yeah I have Brady, Rodgers and Brees as the clear top 3. Then Mahomes. Usually I don't put rookies this high but he's the MVP this year, imo. Then a group of 4-5 guys in Goff, Luck, Ryan, Rivers and Wilson. So I guess he's in the 5-9 range and I could be convinced on pretty much any order for those guys. Ryan has great weapons but so-so oline. Same with Rivers. Goff has great everything, including the HC. Luck has the 2nd best OL of those guys but due to injuries, the worst pass catcher group. Wilson has decent to solid receivers and oline. Luck has thrown most TDs, Ryan has great Yds/G, TD/INT ratio and YPA. Wilson has been efficient but has by far the least pass attempts. Rivers has been even more efficient on bit more passes. Goff is great on pretty much every stat. I think the stats highlight more how much help they get from their weapons/OL than their abilities as QBs this season.

I read in an article, I think by Florio,  that now that the trade deadline has passed they could just recind the tag and he becomes a FA immediately.  They would just accept the fact that they would get the compensatory 3rd. rd. pick.  Interesting way to move on from a headache.

If they rescind the tag now, they don't get compensatory pick. But save cap space.

I don't know what defines elite in the NFL, I suppose it depends on your criteria and that is up to the individual.  But I'd say he's purty good, and will only get better with time.

This, agreed. He's not top 3, not sure if he's in top 5 either but certainly not far off or outside top 10.

When you are talking about value of your draft picks, yes. There’s busy in every round, why not give them a 3rd instead to steal him from Houston.  I doubt Ballard is saying, “well there’s been a ton of 3rd round bust so let’s just give them a 3rd for Thomas, the pick we make might not even work out”

Hey thats what makes sports great, we all have our opinions. I personally am happy we didn’t give up a 4th but I can see why some people are bummed out.

Wouldn't say I'm bummed we didn't trade for him but 4th rounder, even for the top drafting teams, rarely pan out to be better than DT, who I'd guess is around 800-1000 yard #2 WR at this point. Cheaper for sure but the cap hit isn't that bad for this year, 4.5M. Next year it balloons to 14M but any good receiver seems to get close to or over 10M these days.

Draft picks are absolutely important but success rate on day 3 picks is so bad that it can be a good idea to trade them for proven players. I say can be only because with most proven players on the trade market, there comes a big cap hit with them, or some other baggage. Pats have done that for years and many teams have catched up too. The timing for us probably wasn't ideal though so I can stomach not going for it and maybe it just isn't part of Ballards MO.

i feel bad for Mayfield, his rookie year just got a LOT harder. and knowing the browns, they wont retain any of the interim coaches and hire all new ones next year.

Of course they won't retain them (unless new HC wants so). That's why they made the firings now, so they get a head start on the coaching search. And maybe the situation with Hue/Haley/rest of the team was escalating badly so they felt they needed to act now, if one believes those reports.

Yeah, you definitely can't give a QB like Carr time in the pocket. I don't follow raiders so not sure if he got injured last year or what but dude was a beast coming into the league. That team was steam rolling people

He's been pretty disappointing since 2016. He's seeing ghosts and throws way too many short passes that have no chance at gaining YAC.
