Hankins played in a scheme that ran a 4-3.

The Colts run a hybrid 3-4.

So why in the world would you assume that we're looking to sign Hankins? I would be shocked if the Colts are the team looking into him. We missed out on Poe, and I think we will add a DT in the draft.

Hankins doesn't fit what we run here defensively. Cool it with the posts about him coming here. It's been old since the first one started months ago.

He can be used in the same role, in same assignments that he had in his successful years with the Giants.

Why do,you care what he got paid?  It's not like the colts are up against the cap and his contract is going to hinder the team.

I think it's very relevant when evaluating a signing, how much a player got paid.

It probably won't hinder the team but based on what I expect the Colts FA signings to perform, I think Simon was the best value signing.

Did you see Hoyer's playoff game in Houston? He was terrible. Can't judge stats when it comes to the biggest game of your career, and O'Brien refused to pull him after 3 interceptions in the first half.

Osweiler was about equally terrible against NE in the playoffs.

Nope. He's probably top five, but I don't have five QBs in Tier 1. There's a distinction between Brady and Rodgers and everyone else, IMO. When they are healthy, their teams automatically make the playoffs, 8 years running now. Top tier QBs can drag even bad teams into the playoffs, pretty much every year. With Brees, the Saints have missed the playoffs 6 out of 11 seasons, believe it or not. The only pass he gets is BountyGate, but since then, they've missed the playoffs 3 out of 4 years (same as the Chargers). They don't play in the AFC East where one team has a stranglehold on the division. Not only are they not making the playoffs, they've finished below .500 4 out of 5 years. They're not even a fringe playoff team.

A couple years ago, I had to downgrade Brees because he doesn't get his team into the playoffs enough. I am the main "football is a team sport" guy, but during the regular season, great QBing is good enough for those couple extra wins you need to make the playoffs. We've seen Luck do it, and with a few more plays he would have done it last season.

Would Rodgers have made the playoffs last year if GB allowed 66 points more over the course of the season?

Or the year before if they had allowed 153 points more (108 points more than they scored)?

Luck has never had as bad defense as Brees the past few years. That few more plays applies to Saints pretty well too

  5. Since using their franchise' first ever pick on David Carr, the Texans have drafted zero QBs in the first 2 rounds. One in the 3rd round and that was back in 2003. One in the 4th round, Tom Savage.

No one wonder it's an issue. It's like they are allergic to drafting QBs high and instead opt to use retreads there (KC too).

Too bad Derek Carr's last name is Carr and he wasn't an option for them, lol.

    Drew Bree's isn't tier 1.

3 straight losing seasons, and 6 non winning seasons out of 11?

Brees deserves the least amount of blame for those 3 straight losing seasons, which probably featured one of the worst (if not the worst) 3 year stretch for team defense ever.

In those 3 losing seasons he's (among QBs with at least 30 starts during that period)

    #2 in TDs (behind AR)

    #1 in comp. %

    #1 in total yards

#3 in passer rating (behind Brady and AR).

However, during those 3 seasons Saints have allowed 1354 points. Almost 100 points more than the next worst team. Almost 200 points worse than us. 3 teams allowed less than 900 points. Saints allowed more in just the past two seasons.

I'd assume the Saints have been beyond awful in almost every defensive statistic but the above highlights pretty well how bad they've been. Borderline miracle that they managed to win even that many games.

Didn't he play LB with the Rams in their 4-3? I remember reading something about that when he signed here. He was a bit out of position, but I feel he could make the adjustment if we didn't get some help in the draft (I'm hoping for Reddick!). Not a bad thought, would definitely be interesting to see how he plays there.

    Yes, strongside LB.

  8. Funny enough, most Pats signings are the types that we just made. 2nd or 3rd tier players brought in to play for peanus and with good coaching and culture elevate their play to 1st tier players. They've made like 3 exceptions in the past decade, though one of them was this very year.

Not sure if there has been a team that has moved on as quickly from as good and as many playmakers as the Pats have over the years too. Jamie Collins and Chandler Jones just in the past calendar year. Malcolm Butler might be following them soon.

I don't like all the signings we made but I like the overall philosophy.

If the GM track record is under 50% hits, I agree.  If the GM track record of hits is above 50% (All Draft picks over time becoming good starters/contributors) Then I'm for it.  I'm of the mind to let a keen and proven talent evaluator like Ballard develop his track record before judgement though.

I don't think there's a GM who hits above 50% with all of his draft picks.

Unless it's very loose definition for 'hit'.

Ravens don't usually do well outside Baltimore. Then we have to pay him. I think we draft Wormley or Godchaux some youngster in the draft. Wise maybe

Grubbs (NO screwed up witht he contract though), Pernell McPhee and Osemele have done/are doing well.

Kruger, Arthur Jones, Smith and Ellerbe haven't done well outside of Baltimore but many of those guys either had only had one good year and got overpaid (Probably more or less because they become free agents the year the Ravens won the SB in case of Ellerbe and Kruger) or probably were never that good to begin with. Like Torrey Smith, one route-pony.

Those are the major FAs Ravens have lost since 2011. Not that bad of a ratio for hits/misses. Some guys have done better outside of Baltimore, like Darian Stewart, one of the best FA bargains in recent years. Oher sucked in TEN but probably had his best year in Carolina.

You're right about paying part. That's why I wouldn't trade much for him. Been inconsistent so far and Ravens Dline has already lost Lawrence Guy. Should be bit of a red flag if they are shopping him imo.
