  1. I'd absolutely give up a 3rd but I doubt he's moving for that price.

He has the 5th year option left on his deal for 8M. If he's tagged next year, it would be little more than 15M, I think. Even if we assume it's 16M, it would be more or less a 2 year deal for 25M total.

Knowing that if he cleans up his act and plays well, Sheldon/his agents know that he's going to get close to 100M contract with up to half of it guaranteed. Richardson can be top 10 interior lineman in the game. So I'd make the bet that he staysout off off-field issues and plays hard for salary cap cost of 25M for 2 years and a 3rd rounder; if the bet pays off, Colts will probably get a compensation 3rd rounder for him. It would just come quite a but later than the original 3rd. But I think that would be a good price to pay for a very good defensive lineman. 25M in money and moving a mid 3rd in '17 for a compensation 3rd in '20.

But there are too many redflags on Sheldon to give him a big deal IMO. There would need to be a lot of outs on that deal.

On paper and before a down of football was played, the Texans had my favorite draft of any team

The article didn't start very well because of that IMO. Even without any division rival bias, I didn't think they had a great draft. Reader looks like a nice pick though.

I think those grades are fair but as usual, teams that pick high and/or have lot of picks tend to get higher grades.

EDIT. Either Colts should've gotten higher grade or Redskins should've gotten lower. They got minimal contributions from their '16 picks, only UDFA was a savior for them. Some due to bad luck like the mysterious Doctson injury but not sure any team got less from their '16 drafts last year than the Redskins. This coming from a person who thinks McCloughan is one one the best talent evaluators in the business.

  3. Chris Baker or Abry Jones would probably be my #1 (realistic) interior defensive lineman target in FA. Good players but shouldn't break the bank.

I'm assuming that Short gets the tag and if Campbell doesn't re-sign with the Cards, I think he'd go to a team that is closer to winning than we are.

Not completely against Hankins/Williams/Logan but they'll probably get too much money for pure run defenders. They are not Snacks caliber players either.

Poe, I think he's a good player but not sure he'll be worth the money. Would prefer to go big on either corner or pass rusher.

I like Alan Branch and Vance Walker too but they don't offer much in the pass rush department. Branch has been inconsistent in the past and Walker missed the whole year with an injury.

I like Trumaine Johnson too, despite some inconsistencies and injury concerns. I think i'd offer that deal for him, with about half of it guaranteed and small signing bonus.

I know it's too early to make a call, but besides Zeke, did anyone else get over a couple hundred yards from last years group?

    1. Ezekiel Elliott RB, Dallas Cowboys – 1631
    2. Jordan Howard RB, Chicago Bears – 1313 (2nd in the league)
    3. Rob Kelley RB, Washington Redskins – 704
    4. Devonte Booker RB, Denver Broncos – 612
    5. Jalen Richard RB, Oakland Raiders – 491
    6. Derrick Henry RB, Tennessee Titans – 490
    7. Paul Perkins RB, New York Giants – 449
    8. DeAndre Washington, RB Oakland Raiders – 422
    9. Kenny Dixon RB, Baltimore Ravens – 383

#4 (Jay Ajayi) and #7 (David Johnson) in total rushing were 5th and 3rd round picks, respectively, in 2015.

That tells it all. Seahawks and Falcons couldn't keep pressuring Brady enoug, though maybe for little different reasons; 'Hawks lost Avril, Falcons lacked depth ang were completely gassed at the end.

New England ran 93 plays, more than double the Falcons’ total. The last time a team ran 93 plays in a game was in 2013; before then, nobody had done so since 2002. According to Pro-Football-Reference, this is the first time in NFL history that a team ran 90 or more plays against an opponent that ran fewer than 50.

    82. Kevin Zeitler, RG, Cincinnati Bengals (unranked)

Kevin Zeitler has developed into one of the league’s most solid and dependable guards. He has now recorded five straight seasons of consistently-strong grading, and all but one of those years have been well balanced between run blocking and pass protection. This season, he allowed only one sack and 19 total QB pressures across all 16 games, and didn’t allow a sack for the final 15-straight games.

Best performance: Week 7 vs. Browns, 88.8 grade

Key stat: Zeitler didn’t miss a snap all year, playing 100 percent of the team’s 1,087 snaps on offense.

Now how likely he is to keep up that performance and is he worth the gamble in huge money is a different question.

I think we sign a RG, although I'm not too high on Zeitler, wasn't Dalton the most sacked QB last year (at least the top 3).

Probably something like that but their Oline had only two good players on it. Zeitler and Whitworth. LG was passable and RT and C were disaster as Ogbuehi, Fisher and Bodine were all pretty atrocious.

I'm pretty sure Zeitler wasn't responsible for many of those sacks.

I'll be surprised if the Saints win the NFC South. Who do they have besides Drew Brees? Synthetic might be able to answer that question. The other players seem too inconsistent. It just seems like NO is still trying to rebuild. Tamps seems more likely to take first place next season.

They do have arguably the best young corps of receivers. Michael Thomas, Willie Snead and Brandin Cooks. TE is passable as Brees is passing to them and RBs are solid. OL has 3 very good pieces (Armstead, Unger and Strief) and then two passable/questionable pieces (both guards). They need to fix that so Brees can have better throwing lanes.

DL has some good talent too. Rankins, Jordan, Fairley (if they can keep him). Davison and Onyemata are solid depth pieces. Kikaha showed some promise as an edge rusher in '15 but missed the whole year with an injury, ACL iirc. They could use another player there, and edge rusher or interior guy but that group is solid.

    ILB is a disaster.

DBs are solid. They were down to their #5 corner or something ridiculous early on this season and never fully recovered. Safety group isn't bad either if Bell continues his development, Vaccaro and Byrd are fine.

Their special teams were atrocious last season and cost them many games. Their cap situation is looking better than it has been in a while, though it's still not nowhere near great. I wouldn't have them as favorites in the division but I think they are legitimate team if they can fix couple of their big holes (G, ILB, DE).

I don't recall all of the details, but the one thing that sticks out the most for me is the reports that Goodell wanted to punish Brady harder to make up for what some thought was a weak punishment for SpyGate.

Not to bring up a dead topic, but with how shady Brady acted (refusing to hand over his phone, destroying his phone, then the incriminating text messages), you still think he's innocent?

Punish the Patriots, not specifically Brady. I think the details you're referring to are brought up in this article.

If someone has never read it, I'd highly recommend it. Maybe the best NFL-related article I've read.

I don't think Brady was innocent but I wouldn't have handed them my phone either. Wouldn't hand it to anyone unless a court would order it.

I could actually see this happening and then if it did happen I think Brady or Bill B and maybe both would seriously consider retirement.

The AFC right now looks like crap, not sure who else there is to get high on in the offseason. And spare me any Steelers talk, Mike Tomlin isn't getting by the Pats in a big game even if you gave him their playbook ahead of time.

Texans have the defense, but lack the offense.

The NFC is the going to be the interesting battle. GB only will get to the SB if they get homefield since everything will have to be perfect for that lousy defense and Rodgers to get back to the big one. Falcons will slide like the Panthers did last year. So the NFC South might even have a shot to be won by the Saints if their D improves under the new hirings they are making with coaching there. And the NFC South switches every year so it could legit be won by the Saints or Bucs next season.

Cowboys should have it made to get to the SB with more experience under their belts now. But, easier said then done since Dallas often blows it or the refs blow it for them.

Seattle is fading but they can still win that crappy division.

Good post, agree with pretty much everything.

  11. Lacy is free agent, so no need to cut him.

Starks turns 31, had injuries and averaged 2.3 yards per run on 63 carries. Pretty good chance he's done.

He only has 618 carries, along with 125 catches so he doesn't have as much mileage on him as typical 31 yr old RB but last season was pretty damn ugly for him.
