  1. I highly doubt all the players on the final 53 are currently on our roster. Chiefs were active in waiver wire/acquiring players from other teams practice squads during Ballards tenure there (KC found 4 starters that way), Ballard has talked how one of the best times to acquire players is in September and October, only one cutdown day to 53 and we seriously lack depth in many positions, even without all these injuries.

Did you watch any Saints games last year? Cooks struggles when you put a decent corner on him or just play him man to man with physical contact. You are correct, he don't like contact, and has never been able to overcome this problem...He's not a receiver who is going to catch risky passes in coverage like Edleman did with that big circus catch in the SB (Pats lose the SB if not for that). He never did that stuff in New Orleans. The Panthers used to shut him down quick just by using Like Kuechley and Josh Norman. After Cooks lit them up early in the season, they completely shut him down in the second divisional game just by using Luke on him.

His YAC is high because he's most useful as a slot receiver. Most of his big plays are just screens and short passes...The only time you seen him last year get a long TD, was when there was blown coverage (Raiders and Panthers games). Cooks stats are pretty, but so are a lot of receivers. Allen Robinson had a 1,400 yard receiving year in Jacksonville recently, and I imagine that would've been much higher with Brees throwing to him.

The Saints got rid of him cause last year he got outplayed by rookie Michael Thomas who was making the big catches down field in tight coverage, and was able to go man to man with corners and safeties and still make catches in contested coverage. Check the Rams and 49ers games where Michael Thomas absolutely went off on those teams and looked like a vintage Marques Colston.

Cooks in 3 years never did any of this stuff, and Sean Payton gave him every role he could to try and make him the #1 receiver. He was meant to replace Marques Colston and failed on every expectation we had, and then had the nerve to complain about not getting enough passes thrown to him last year once it became apparent that Michael Thomas was becoming one of Brees' favorite targets.

He's going to look like a stud in NE's system where he will most likely be a slot receiver in their dink and dunk offense. But this idea that he's going to be the next Randy Moss is absolutely laughable. Cooks outside the slot isn't a threat...

Yes, I watch the Saints quite a bit. Per NextGenStats, Cooks averaged 2.83 yrd separation per target (2.76 outside where he received 2/3 of his targets), which ranked 3rd best among all #2 receivers. And not every corner can play physical with him, as there's a chance you won't even get a finger on him and he beats you for 98 yard TD like he did against Sean Smith last year. Many corners would need safety help over the top.

And I don't think there's shame getting beat by Michael Thomas. That kid is really good.

Brandin Cooks is a slot receiver at best. If they dare try using him the way they did Moss, like all the hype has built up over him, they're going to be greatly disappointed...Cooks struggled so much in New Orleans with every other role Payton gave him besides the slot position.

I could end up being totally wrong and maybe the Pats do turn him into a truly lethal receiver, but out here in NOLA, Cooks wasn't all that great when he was outside the slot. His biggest issue was always in coverage where would get straight up abused by defenders playing tight spaces to him. He got outplayed thoroughly by rookie Michael Thomas last year, who could make hard catches in coverage.

I disagree. Cooks didn't struggle in every other role besides the slot, more like the opposite. He's not a great YAC machine despite his speed and he doesn't like contact. Outside deep threat is where he worked the best. Press can work on him but not many corners have the foot speed to recover if they fail to press him good.

Your team will have at least two draft picks in each of the first 3 rounds next year. They may be looking to package some of the picks to get a franchise QB.

Watkins seemed to be injured a lot. I was more surprised that they traded Darby. I have not followed the Bills much but I recall him being very good his rookie year. What was the reason for that trade?

Darby is a man corner. McDermott likes to play zone. In Carolina last year as their DC, he had them play more zone than any other D in the league IIRC. Corners aren't as important there as the front 7 is. As seen how Carolina let Norman walk last year and Bills let Gilmore walk this year.

Plus one has to give to get. Matthews is a solid #2 receiver.

With Maclin's release now being reported that it was primarily cap related i am wondering if Richardson could follow suit and be released if they can't find a trade partner.  The Jets are also under cap pressure.

Jets are about middle of the pack in cap space, with 10+M. Chiefs had only couple of million.

AND, Chiefs project to have negative cap space for next year, so they need to make some cuts to get under the cap for next year. Doable but they are still pretty tight. Jets are currently projected to have 4th most, with over 56M in cap space and save for Richardson, no UFAs worth big money.

  6. 10 hours ago, Colts1324 said:

Yeah I think so too. He will probably get 8 million a year and that's too much for us.

That would have to be very heavily based on incentives.

Chiefs wouldn't cut him with their WR situation and the fact that he had just been present at their OTAs if there wasn't some significant issues. Chiefs have been pretty well run team under Reid and Dorsey too.

But this was pretty costly for them. Lost a 3rd for tampering and about 23M for 1600 yards.

  7. Right now, maybe half of the top 15 (or so) interior defensive lineman are 6'1 or less and about 300 lbs or less and arm lenght of around 32 inches (Donald, Atkins, Casey, Daniels, Jarrett/Kyle Williams). Only Donald was a day one 1 pick or drafted in the first two rounds. Casey went in the 3rd round. No one else was picked in the top 100. I don't think there is an other position were so many top players share similar trait and most of them were picked late in the draft.

Are teams that afraid of having a small team that they automatically give worse grade for smaller defensive lineman? If Aaron Donald, for example, had Geno Atkins besides him instead of Michael Brockers, would that line be as effective as one would expect just from the player talent level upgrade from Brockers to Atkins or even worse? I mean, Brockers is a good player but Atkins is on another level. And individually these players are great but would they work as well together on the same line? Not sure if it's as much about the size itself as these players can use it to their advantage in quickness and leverage but maybe two dlineman with short arms would create some issues?

Just wondering why so many of them have fallen late in the draft. I understand that some teams want bigger, physical players (like BB, Parcells etc) but what about those teams that had already gotten steals later in the draft with small interior lineman would jump at the chance to select a player who had great tape and showed similar traits as their best defensive player. Like Grady Jarrett in 2015. Both the Bengals and Titans drafted a dlinemen in the 4th, Jarrett went with first pick in the 5th round Bengals pick was actually two picks before Jarrett was taken.

Though the Bengals did take Billings last year and he might be next to Atkins but he was another 4th round pick. And Titans did draft Mike Martin to be their nose tackle a year after taking Casey but he didn't pan out. And I maybe haven't looked at closely enough at bust/success rate for smaller defensive lineman so these guys could be sort of outliers and teams just missed on these guys for other reasons.

Eh, if his scouting was good he'd still be GM

I actually think his amateur scouting was pretty good. Teams average what, less than 2 starters oer draft? In 5 drafts, even ignoring the Luck pick we got

    Hilton

    Allen

    Fleener

    Mewhort

    Moncrief

    Anderson

    Geathers

    Kelly

8 starting caliber talents or better and we could add couple more to the list from the 2016 draft soon, And this is ignoring two 1sts and a 2nd that we used on Luck, stole Davis and blew on T-Rich.

Team building, overall philosophy and pro scouting were the issues (along with people skills). The hits at the draft were all on the offensive side until 2015 and those two guys have struggled with injuries. Combined with poorly balanced drafts/success rate on picks (O vs D) and all the FA busts, the talent on D was pretty damn porous.

#1 - Love the post.  Thank you.  I like how you broke it down.

    #2 -

Ew.  No.  Please fix this.  Anyone but him.  Please and thank you.  (I mean, you're probably right, but still, it hurts my eyeballs...)

#3 - What does the "HM" stand for?  I was able to deduce what you meant, but I'm still trying to figure out what it stands for.

    #4 -

I didn't differentiate between Right and Left Tackle/Guard/End/Whatever you want to call it because I (perhaps wrongly) assumed that an elite Tackle/Guard/End could play on either side of the ball and still be elite.  So Tyron Smith would be a better right tackle than Gilbert, Schwartz, or Schraeder.  I assume.  Just my opinion.

#5 - How do you feel about Kam Chancellor and Marcus Peters?  Are they at least a close 2nd to your picks?

    :clover:

    HM: honorable mention.

Guards, I think, can usually play on both sides but prefer one side. Yanda spend a lot on LG this year but prefers RG, per his own words. Not sure as many tackles can do that. But Tyron Smith is such a freak that he probably could, even if it took a small adjustment period.

Chancellor would be 3rd on my SS list.

I avoided putting guys with short track record (1-2 years) on the list. That's why Landon Collins didn't end up on my SS list either. Peters has been as good ball hawks as any CB from day one but also got beat deep a bit too much on his rookie year. Last year he seemed to learn balancing between being aggressive on going for the ball and taking care of his man. Another year like that and he would be up there. CB and RT were the toughest because there is no Nnamdi or Revis-type who is clearly above other but lots of elite guys who are all very close to each other IMO.

I was bit surprised at the relativel poor talent at 3-4 ILB. I'm sure Kuechly would be able to play it at about as high level as anyone in the past but current 3-4 off ball LBs don't really come close to the likes of Ray Lewis, Patrick Willis and peak NaVorro Bowman. Weakest top-end talent in the NFL IMO.

  10. QB: Brady

    HB: Bell

FB: Juszczyk  (all-around), DiMarco (pure run blocking)

    WR: Antonio Brown

    TE: Gronk

LT: Joe Thomas, HM: Tyron Smith

    LG: Osemele

    C: Frederick

    RG: Yanda, HM: Martin

RT: This is a tough one.. Can't decide between Marcus Gilbert, Mitchell Schwartz and Ryan Schraeder.

    NT: Damon Harrison

    4-3 Base

    DT: Aaron Donald

    DE: Khalil Mack

    MLB: Luke Kuechly

OLB: Sean Lee, HM: Jamie Collins, KJ Wright

    3-4 Base

    DE: Watt

    OLB: Von Miller

    ILB: Hightower or Mosley..

Outside CB: Trufant, Peterson, Sherman.. can't decide, lot of good options.

    Slot CB: Harris Jr.

    FS: Earl Thomas

SS: Eric Berry HM: Reshad Jones

My surprise is the Chargers, I expect them to get to .500 even though they play the NFC East and AFC East. They will get a few surprise victories with a home stretch surprise year from Philip Rivers.

That would be my pick too. I don't think any other team has underachieved as much in the past few years. They have questionmarks at LB, S, OL and HC, along with Rivers late game meltdowns but if Lynn proves out to be at least average coach, I think they are fairly serious threat. That's one stacked division they play in though and rough schedule.

  12. Call me a homer but I think we have small but decisive edge to win the division. But games aren't played on paper. Could have couple of freak losses that ruin the season. Injuries. Maybe Bortles developes into elite quart.. no sorry, can't say that with a straight face.

Texans have stacked defense, solid offensive weapons but question-marks at QB and offensive line. Jags are the same. I'd like Jags chances more even if they had someone like Alex Smith at QB. Solid game manager. Fournette can get yards and their defense should be pretty damn good.

Overall, I like what the Titans have been doing under Robinson but not completely sold on them yet. They could surprisse if their younger players take big steps.

I think it's because he's 31 & he took a BEATING last year. If he had that identical season but was 3-4 years younger, AND a free agent, he wouldn't be on the market very long.

And hadn't been such a headcase outside of NE.

But there were certainly more than 79 players that were better last year than Blount.

Worse OL and worse QB.  They will be improved since they finally fired Gus Bradley.

    This.

While I don't think Dallas oline is as good at run blocking as they are at pass blocking and Zeke last years was the best RB even ignoring olines, Zeke was in lot better situation than what Fournette is entering into, though I like Fournette more than Zeke. Don't see him having the same impact.
