I think you’ve completely misread me.   I’ve said nothing but positive about the signing.   The ONLY thing I described as average was his run defense.   Otherwise, I think he’s better than average, especially as a pass rusher and ST player.

My only note of caution was that he typically plays 50 percent of the snaps, so I don’t see him as a 3-down RDE.   I like the signing, the player and the price.   Maybe he plays more for the Colts, I’m just saying as of now, I wouldn’t expect it.

I think the starting DE’s are Kwity and Dayo.   But I think the new kid will play a lot.   I’m a happy guy!

To be fair, average run defense is a huge improvement over Ngakoue's bottom of the league run defense.

Also, keep in mind that Ballard has done something similar before - taken rotational player who were underutilized and made them starters for us - Jabaal Sheard , Denico Autry...

Have no clue who this is but a three year deal he must be good.

Yay. I got one right in my mock off-season. Very good replacement for Ngakoue. He's been rotational player on 2 great defenses and been productive at both spots. Athletic and explosive... can rush from wide 9 spot , pretty much what Gus wants from his right end. Still young(27 I think) and much better in run defense than YN

I was initially "meh" on this signing, mostly because I thought McLaughlin was pretty good and would have been easy to retain. But Matt Gay is still young, he's already proven in big time situations, he's a top five kicker right now, and should be rock solid for the life of his contract. He's also a good kickoff specialist, should that be needed. We've been shaky at kicker since 2019, and now we can (presumably) check that box off, not just in 2023, but for the foreseeable future.

This is a good signing, IMO. Not exactly earth shattering news for FA Day 1, but I like it.

My thing is... you can look at a lot of Ballard signings and none of them seem outrageous. You can make the case for pretty much all of them individually. But the pattern continues and the impact piles up signing after signing... he continues giving premier resources for non-premier positions. And then you wake up one day and you have the highest paid OL(especially on the interior), Highest paid interior DLinemen, one of the highest paid LBs, highest paid kicker, we will soon have one of the highest paid RBs too I imagine... He just continues to accumulate those contracts, while being questionable at every premier position of football...

    Just an observation...

  4. After giving the biggest money in NFL history for an OG, OC and LB Ballard has decided to up the ante and make records at even less important positions. Next stop - punter and long snapper!!!

On a more serious note - I don't really hate this one. If we are going to be spending on kicker this is a good one to spend on. For some reason I'm having memories of him being on the Colts before... Don't remember in camp or for a workout when we were having troubles with kicking or practice squad... No idea why he didn't stick at the time.

edit: Yeah, my memory didn't lie to me this time, here it is:

The Rams took him off our practice squad to become their star kicker in their Super bowl run.

I listen to him on CBS radio every Friday night at work. He is a huge Colts fan, he has been since the early 2000's. He was bashing the Colts Friday night for not trading up to get the #1 spot after Carolina did. He was devastated and wanted Bryce Young. I can't blame him for being real annoyed, this is a media head that is a true Colts fan and here we are giving a Kicker huge money when Chase was good last year Angry Season 4 GIF by The Simpsons

He would have been devastated either way - Ballard ain't picking 5'10" 190 pounds QB at no. 1 :dunno:

For sure. The Saints are in even worse shape. I don't understand how they signed Carr. I once had a mathematic mind but the math involved with the NFL salary cap seems to confuse me. How do teams that are already over the cap sign other players to these lucrative contracts like Carr's?

I'm not sure but I think they don't need to be under the cap now. They need to be under the cap at cut-down day before the start of the season. Until then they can trade players, cut, restructure contracts in order to go under the cap.  (edit: this is wrong... they actually need to be under the cap by the 15th of March)

We have already cut Adam Thielen and Eric Kendricks. We have talked about cutting Harrison Smith and Zadarius Smith. We probably will not keep Dalvin Tomlinson.  Our right tackle is up there in salary, but he is young and we want to keep him. I wish we could cut Cousins.

You guys seem like you are in salary cap hell... :/
