I wholeheartedly agree with you. He is an emotional player that wants to win. He hates to lose. Fans seem to prefer players who are docile, quiet and don't show emotion.

As others have said, I too believe that the Colts should not trade for Diggs but not because of the "diva" reasons given. I always seem to agree with @stitches and I do once again. If the Colts are going to trade a #1 pick for a WR, it should be for a young WR like JJ, Waddle, Lamb and the like. What about a 2nd round pick for Garrett Wilson? I like Wilson a lot.

Diggs would work better on a more veteran team that is winning like the CChiefs

Yes, Wilson is another one. I doubt he will be available for a second though...

But in this scenario would you take Fashanu, move Raimann to right tackle, and cut Braden Smith? Smith has a $16M+ salary number this year, almost $20M next year. Cutting Smith saves $10M in the cap for the 2024 season.

Why the hell would you cut one of the best and most consistent RTs in the league? You can probably get a 1st or 2nd round pick for him if you make him available for trade?

The Colts just hired Alex Tenny to be their passing game coordinator.   What position would Brian Johnson take?

Yah, I was talking in general, before the Tenny news... I guess Steichen values Tenny more than Johnson... or Johnson didn't want a demotion of sorts...

  4. Well, Zierlein has posted his first mock and there are some surprises in there.

    https://www.nfl.com/news/lance-zierlein-2024-nfl-mock-draft-1-0-falcons-patriots-make-trades-to-land-qbs

    Notable things for me:

    - Drake Maye is NOT the second QB taken - it's Jayden Daniels. Maye drops to 5.

    - Pats take MHJ :puke:

    - Rome Odunze before Malik Nabers

    - Taliese Fuaga OT1, JC Latham OT3 and in top 10

    - Terrion Arnold CB1

    - JJ McCarthy goes no. 12 to the Broncos

    - Byron Murphy in top 15, DT1

    - Colts get Brock Bowers at 15:

    Quote

Colts GM Chris Ballard can find receivers, cornerbacks, pass rushers and offensive linemen later in the draft. He will have to act now to land a guy like Bowers, who can become a safety blanket for Anthony Richardson.

    - Olu Fashanu drops to 18.

    - Darius Robinson and Roman Wilson have made an impression at the senior bowl - they both go in R1.

    - SEVEN OTs go R1!!!

    Your thoughts?

I understand why they’re letting the legal system play out.   But they could have cut him anyway if they wanted.   It was the Colts choice to continue to hold him.

The Colts have two hurdles to clear to keep Ogletree.

    1.   The legal system.

    2.   Public opinion.

The Colts have to clear both to have any chance.   The odds are likely against them, but the odds are not zero.  It could happen.   It’s just not likely.

IMO the public opinion is not strong enough and the public doesn't know enough on the Ogletree's situation for that to be the main factor. IMO if he gets cleared legally he will be back with the Colts. That's why they haven't cut him yet. IMO if they were worried about public backlash they would have already cut ties... :dunno:

  6. This seems like a great hire on paper. I hope his coaching style translates well to the league, because he obviously knows how to coach young players. Great point by @Superman that this seems like a hire of the best guy they could possibly get, rather than him having some connection or friendship with any of our FO guys or the coaching staff.

I thought he looked pretty good. Will he fall that far?

No idea what his stock is right now. There was a time he was considered a 1st round type of prospect, but then he had a pretty bad season when he was benched in Oklahoma and then transferred. No idea how the league sees him now...

PFF has him right outside their top 100 draft prospects. Maybe he goes day 2? Maybe not? Not sure...

I think the Bears did not do what was necessary to enable Fields to succeed. I can understand the Jets cutting bait with Zach Wilson, as he never showed anything. Fields played a lot better.

He did... he still wasn't consistent enough to bring any confidence that he's a franchise QB and definitely didn't play well enough for them to not draft what many consider is a generational type of talent at QB. And you are right that they didn't do enough to support him, but that should have been sign for their owners that they need to cut bait with their GM and HC, too and start clean with a superb talent at no. 1 in the draft... and I bet the best HC candidates would have loved to work with Caleb, too...

Now for them it's important to not compound the error.

  9. I wanted to add something because this might enter into our discussions in a couple of years with Richardson - IMO by the end of year 3 of your QB(when he's actually been playing, not in a Jordan Love type of situation) you should know whether he's the guy for your franchise or you need to start looking elsewhere. You should either be ready to commit long-term to him or you should go get the next guy.

IMO the Bears are clearly in that situation now. They don't know if Fields is the guy... and IMO it's already too late. They should cut bait.

If you can do that and still get Drake Maye, then we need to talk. And I'm not a big Maye guy, much more a Williams guy, but the Bears still have #9...

IMO QB is the only position where you do NOT do this. IMO with QB there is no room for compromise - you get the best one you can. No idea if the Bears have the same thinking...

  11. If you are the Bears what is the offer you would be willing to accept for the no. 1 pick? I personally would be taking Caleb pretty much no matter what any team offers, but ... lets say a team gives u 3 1sts, 3 seconds and a starting tackle. Do you take it?

About the questions in OP - I think the Bears will do the smart thing this year - take the generational QB and trade the one they still don't know is a franchise QB 3 years into his rookie deal...

I did then, and still do now, feel like Hooker was a panic pick. They admittedly didn't bring him in until the very last moment because they didn't think he was going to fall. I don't think they did their due diligence on Hooker and when he fell to them they panicked and took him thinking a blue chip prospect they hadn't truly considered was there for the taking. He was uber talented and man did he flash, but injuries was his demise which was the question mark coming out of college.

Maybe with a little more time they could have avoided the pick? I still wont hold his very first class against him though.

I still think Hooker was the right pick. You cannot really predict that type of injury future when you draft him. He had an injury when we drafted him, but that particular injury didn't seem to be very serious and he didn't miss any time with it AFAIR. And the start of his career with the Colts was special. He truly looked like the next big time FS. Until the injuries hit... and kept hitting him... again and again...

  13. True. Elite traits seems to be the overwhelming bias Ballard has. But still I take him at his word when he says his philosophy is to build from the inside out. IMO only Hooker deviates from that on players drafted in R1 or acquired via 1st round pick and we have a reason to believe Ballard really thought Hooker would be special FS. I think at the time there was a leaked photo that showed Hooker's card on the Colts board and they had him ranked as the 3d best player in the draft.

The thing with this is Ballard builds through the draft and you only have so many shots. I know the BPA philosophy, but I'm much more into BPA at positions of need unless a generational talent is sitting in front of you. This is especially true when Ballard more or less only uses FA for one-year contract players.

If what you need is not there at 15 you trade back and use what IS there as leverage to get others to bite hard.

Yeah, that's the thing. I'm not sure how we do not consider cornerback still a need? IMO that still is one of our weakest positions on the roster. And neither Brents, nor Jones played at a level where you are like "Oh, no worries, X is a beast and he has that one covered". Could they get there? Maybe... Have they done enough to get the chance to prove themselves? Sure. But IMO they haven't done enough to make you pass on a great player.

Now on a more specific note with the Colts under Ballard - this IMO is where the real question is - does Ballard value CB so much that he would draft one in the first half of R1? I honestly don't know and if I had to guess, he probably doesn't see the position as that important and he probably doesn't think our scheme necessitates such big investment in the position. So yah... if I had to guess we probably won't draft a CB in the 1st... Maybe if we trade back? I actually think trading back is one of the most likely outcomes in this draft. :dunno:

Every year fans here say the Colts rookie player didn’t show them enough to satisfy them.   So they want to turn around and re-draft that same position the very next year.    Happens every year.   It would appear you’re doing it now.   Or am I misunderstanding you?

No, I'm not necessarily redrafting the same position. But I'm also not assuming best case scenario and I'm not missing on a great prospect because we have Jaylon Jones who has proven little to nothing in this league... yet. In other words - if you think Mitchell or Terrion Arnold or Dejean Cooper or whoever is the best prospect on the board you take him and you let them all fight it out in camp. With the attrition we are seeing in the league chances are they will all be needed at some point anyway, so yeah...
