  1. Fountain cannot afford any setbacks. Hopefully he's back quickly. The competition for the 5th or 6th spot at WR will be the fiercest of several positional dogfights. The old adage that "the most important ability is availability" cannot be emphasized enough here.

I totally agree. And for the GM to order the coach to do this was a complete slap in the face to the coach. Caldwell should have told Polian to go * himself and instead gone for the win. Something like: “The field decisions are mine to make. Back the hell off.”

Nobody can tell me that this didn’t take some of that team’s mojo away. They had an incredible run and came back time and again against all odds. They were unbeatable with unreal confidence. It was magical. What a heartbreaking and horrible decision. Bill Polian’s worst moment as the Colts GM.

How is he going to be a day one starter when Desir and Moore are the two outside starters. Now we will see if he is able to take over Wilson’s spot when Moore is in the slot. I don’t think he will this year. Maybe in the future. I do think he will get plenty of snaps as I think we will play more man coverage.

I agree.  It’s going to take a little while. He’s not ready yet. But I do believe he will, in time, more than justify his being picked so high. Great future; he will just require a little patience.

We’ve invested in Walker.   He may not be great, but he’s certainly average or somewhat better than.

We just invested heavily with draft picks at linebacker.   Okereke and Speed.   There’s no need to invest more for Wagner.

I’m not saying Wagner isn’t better.   But for how long?   We’re building for the future.  Trying to create a long window of opportunity.   Wagner doesn’t fit the profile.

    Sorry....     I’d pass.

Yup. This team’s future is in its draft picks. The Colts invested heavily in the LB position this year. Now they have to find out what they have.

  5. We will keep 4 RBs. It’s the TE/WR cuts that are going to be painful. Gonna lose a good player with that group. Can the team afford to go with 3 TEs and 6 WRs? Or will it be 4TEs and 5 WRs?

What to watch: Doyle’s health and whether Campbell can grab the returner’s job from Rogers.

Am I the only person here who can see KC taking a step backwards and the Jags not being as good as expected?

KC's defense last year wasn't great other than the pass rush, and they've lost a few proven performers (Houston, Ford) while only bringing in one proven pass rusher, the loss of Tyreek Hill for a few games may hit the passing game hard (it will certainly make it easier for teams to double Travis Kelce) and they seem to be assuming that Damien Williams will be as productive as he was at the end of last season, rather than the unproductive back from his 4 years at Miami.

With the Jags, everybody seems to assume that Nick Foles will be the Eagles version of the player, rather than the Rams version of the player when he was taken out of their system.  While he may be as productive as when he was in Philly, it may be a more reasonable expectation of his upside is Case Keenum in Denver level.  If Foles is at the Case Keenum level, expect a similar playoff run to Denver's last season despite the quality of the defense.

The Jags have been a QB away from being elite; now they have their guy. Don’t underestimate them; terrific D and an improved O will be formidable.

  7. I see 6 WRs taken with all of the unknowns. TY aging slightly and getting banged up more than in the past.  Cain’s recovery an unknown. Funchess new and learning. Campbell a rookie. Because of all this, Rogers makes the team whether Cain goes on PUP or not. He’s a very reliable punt returner and special teamer.  If Cain makes the 53 man roster, I see the fight between Pascal and Fountain, with Pascal having the edge at this point. If Cain is on PUP, they both make it.

I wrote what I wrote because you’re the one who is insistent that not only do we need to address this position but that every expert has agreed with that viewpoint.   True or not, Ballard has been here nearly 30 months and it should be obvious by now that he doesn’t care what anyone else thinks.

Ballard’s got three promising young players at that position...   perhaps he likes them more than anyone here fully realizes.   Perhaps he’s willing to give those snaps to Autry and Lewis and Ward and feel good about it.

I think Ballard likes McCoy and wants him for all the same reasons you and I and most everyone else here wants him.   But only up to a point.   Past that point CB moves on without regret.

When you insist that something is 100  percent obviously so, you set yourself up for disappointment with Ballard.

Your point about having good, promising players at the inside DT slot is probably right. Ballard will want to get them the experience they need, and he likely values them higher than the "experts" or people on this Board do. Thus, the decision not to grab a top DT in the draft when there were several still around at 26. McCoy is a quality player, will likely have another good  year in 2019, and will most likely not be on a championship team doing it. Meaning....not the Colts.

Right now, Milton is maybe 6-8 on the CB rotation.....

Desir, Moore, Wilson, Rock, Hairston, Tell, Collins, and Milton.     Your order might differ,  but making the 53 is going to be very, very hard for Milton.    Being good on special teams likely won't be enough.

Not just Milton, who likely gets cut.  I suspect after the first 4, its a dogfight for the last CB slot (assuming 5 CBs and 5 S's) between Tell, Collins and Hairston, with Tell getting the nod if he pans out as they hope. He can play safety in a pinch.

  10. No reason to think he can't be a contributing piece of the Colt culture. He's a stand up guy according to every report I've read. However, we're not the only contender who is interested in him. If he can win and get paid too, that's the name of the game; there are only a few years left in his career. I DO believe he fits this team perfectly. If the price is right, its a great match.

That Ravens visit I think he's just doing his rounds there. If he's wanting to add to a super bowl contender why would he go play in an entirely different scheme with a 2nd year QB who needs a bunch of work as a passer? I think they've got Kaepernicks old OC but I think the scheme will only hide so much. It's probably going to take a couple weeks before he signs. He can take his time. Especially if he signs with a team like the Colts whose scheme is already blatantly familiar and there is very little transition to be made.

I agree about the questionable fit with the Ravens. They play a 3-4; McCoy has been in a 4-3 his entire career, hasn't he? Not to mention they are transitioning with a new QB. The Colts are a far better fit for McCoy. I think if the $ are right, he's a Colt.

  12. One thing people are discounting is that McCoy has never been in the playoffs. He wants to finish his career with a winner. The Browns aren't there yet; the Colts have arrived. The Colts' defensive scheme and their championship potential fit McCoy perfectly. Of course money is important. But if the Colts are competitive with their offer, they have a great shot at getting a difference maker on D. I'd love to see this guy wearing the Shoe.

  13. Very interesting read Stitches. Thanks for doing this.  I have a few disagreements.

I like the Rock, and give that pick a B+. I think he has the talent and intangibles to star in this D.

I give the Banogu pick a C+.  To me, that pick was a gamble on sheer athletic talent and a strong work ethic.... but because its Ballard, I am giving it the benefit of the doubt, crossing my fingers and hoping for the best.

I also think your grade on Willis is too harsh. I'd give it a B. He looks like he can play a hybrid SS role, and I think he'll be a starter by 2020. He's just a darn good, very smart football player.

I agree with the Campbell grade; he's what the team needed.

Overall, I grade the draft as a B+. Not spectacular, but very solid.

    No.   It didn’t.

Neither of them do what Inman does.

Inman gets open.   He doesn’t have great speed or quickness.   But he runs great routes.   He reads defenses.   He catches the ball.   He developed great chemistry with Luck inside of a week.

    He’s a reliable professional receiver.

There’s almost akways room for a guy line that on any roster.   I’m sorry he’s not on ours.

This. I totally understand that the Colts’ WR group is crowded. But it isn’t all that experienced. And lest we forget, the drop rate was frightening before Inman showed up.  Inman meshed extremely well with Luck. He got open and he caught what was thrown to him. Not a big play player but the best move the chains guy not named TY the Colts had. They will miss him.

  15. I continue to believe Rogers is undervalued by this Board. He solidified the punt return game, which is far more important than KO returns, most of which are now fielded for a touch back. And he had a very decent second half of the season. He's a good #5-6 WR, and a reliable returner, and I think he'll stick.

Dulin would be a good PS addition, someone to stash and develop. I do not see him making the 53 man squad. No way.

You hit the nail on the head, CD, this is the guy I badly want to impress the coaches and make the roster. I would be happy if he even makes it as a rotational guy.

I want another NT type. I fear the D line will wear down with undersized players taking a beating. Depth will be key. It would be great if this guy pans out. But it wouldn't break my heart to see a FA signing as well. One way or another, gotta have another big dude in the middle.

I'm starting to think the Colts may resign Brissett. Things could change but I don't see any team bringing him in as a starter unless teams consider him a bridge guy.

I’d be just fine with that but I expect JB will test the market first before re-signing. Why wouldn’t he? Don’t rule out the Pats going after him either. Stash him for a year and replace Brady with a system ready guy. Could happen.

  18. I took a look at this guy's history. Very interesting.

He was a 3rd round choice of the Patriots in 2017. They moved up to get him by giving up a 3rd and 4th round pick.

They hoped he'd be the eventual replacement for Nate Solder.

He barely played at all as a result of contracting blood Clots in his lungs. The Pats released him.

The Colts picked him up last season but I haven't seen any information about his performances so far.

Wouldn't it be something if Garcia turns out to be just as good as the Pats hoped he'd be? Time will tell.

    Don't sleep on this guy.

  19. Well.... you know how the Ballard team operates. He will be thoroughly scrutinized before being signed. If he passes the screening process, he will be prepped as the new backup to Luck  next year. Brissett is gone in 2020. He’ll get a chance somewhere to start and will bring a nice comp pick back to the Colts.
