Here is Chris Landry's pre draft quick hit scouting report on Rock Ya Sin and Parris Campbell-

    **************************************************************

Quick scouting report on 2 of the Colts draft choices (Pre draft from a real paid scout)-

    Rock Ya Sin ( #32 )

Good size, speed, toughness, ball skills, really quick feet playing in off coverage. Very fluid when he turns and opens up. No wasted step on his plant drive, closes in a hurry. On press coverage, he needs to do a better job using his hands. Occasionally gets turned around by shiftier wideouts. Has speed to recover when out of position, plays the ball in the air well.

Aggressive in run support, reliable tackler in space. His competitiveness and athleticism is outstanding, and makes him a potential starter in the NFL. Plays with greater length than his 5'11" measurement. That combined with his quickness, suddenness, and loose hips allows him to stay low in his peddle and close very quickly in off coverage. Needs to add strength and improve in fighting in run support.

Plays mostly off man coverage, and is very good in that technique. Not a great tackler/wrapper, but can really cover, inside and outside and can a really good player at the next level. Grade at #32, so he's predicted to be taken late 1st round or very early second round.

    Parris Campbell  ( #62 )

Reminds of Jeremy Maclin, fluid receiver, kick returner, difference make with his speed, change of direction, ability after the catch.  Very good size, long arms, good athlete, strong hands, good route runner. Can separate quickly, good runner after the catch, fast and elusive. Not a very good blocker, limited route tree (as is case most of the time) and can have some 'concentration drops'.  But a very productive inside from the slot with bubble screens, crossing routes, hitches, some seam routes etc.   Has quick cutting ability, good burst and run instincts. He was a high school RB, and track guy. Can turn a short catch into a long gain.

He has outside versatility as well. He has really good value here in the second round, may be even higher in round 2 after his workout numbers. This guy is going to be a better player. Right now looking at him (routes, production, running) you wouldn't have him this high. But this is where scouting comes in. You see the ability he has, you see what he can be, With_Development, where 2 years from now folks may say why wasn't this guy taken in the first round?

He has to improve his physicality at the catch point, and become more productive as a downfield receiver. (I assume increase his route tree)  Right now he's mid to late second grade.

    {Chris Landry pre draft quick report}

Really good stuff. I’m assuming Landry isn’t quite as glowing over Banogu and Okereke? Could you share those reviews?

With regards to the bolded; weight and durability are key factors in our scheme IF we don't have the heavies up front to prevent OL from reaching the second level.  My concern with not taking a heavy that sucks up 2 OL is that the wear and tear on our LB crew will eventually shorten their effectiveness.  Hopefully they can continue to shed blockers to offset that, but a Dexter Lawrence type would have helped.

For the pass, I agree, speed and ability to tackle in space, is what it's all about.

Dexter Lawrence may well have been their choice if he’d lasted to 26. In fact, he may be the reason they pulled the trigger on the Redskins trade.

That said, There will be a DT taken today by the Colts.

  3. I figure the Colts are still in the hunt for a safety. They could get a decent one like Hooker or Gardner Johnson by trading up in the 4th using the extra 5th round pick as the chip. Otherwise I suspect these guys will be long gone by the time the Colts pick in the 4th. Any thoughts out there on who, how, and when this might happen?

I think all defense in round 2

34.Murphy- to good to pass up

    46.CG Johnson- Safety

    59.Omenihu- really like this guy

    3rd round we go WR

    McLauren, Isabella, Samuel?

You may be right about all D.  Gardner- Johnson at 34 is a very real possibility. Omenihu or Winovich could also be in the mix at 46. But there is going to be a run on the WR position during the 2nd round. That’s where the serious value is now. So if the Colts want a good one, I can’t see them waiting much longer than #59, assuming there is a WR they want still on the board.

  5. There is a limit to these trades and it ought to be with only getting picks in this draft, not next year. Some people on here think that we should trade #34 for a #1 next year. That really leaves the Colts with a seriously diminished return this year. Get a decent #2 and #3 from, say, the Broncos, and now you’re talking. It would fit what Ballard has been preaching: that the 2nd and early 3rd rounds are full of talent and value.

Probabaly not for a team like the Colts who is openly talking about being a Top 5-10 Rushing team.

Honestly, I don't think keeping 6 WRs, especially when one is your return specialist, cancels out the goal of becoming a better rushing team. What that requires is four good TE's and another, larger RB. I wouldn't be shocked to see the Colts draft a TE sooner than many believe, nor would I be surprised to see a WR picked Day 2. DT; S; TE; OT; WR.....any of these positions could be selected by the end of Day 2 and it would improve the team.

Plenty of room if we still want him....

    Hilton, Funchess, Rookie, Inman, Cain.

There’s five.   And if we carry six then it’s Rogers.   Fountain could be back on the PS.

Thus is not a prediction.   Just saying if we want Inman there’s still room.

If it were up to me, I'd re-sign Inman, grab a top rookie WR, and keep Rogers around as well. 6 WRs makes sense in today's NFL.

I can almost gaurantee Ballard’s top eight is way different then we think.

I doubt it’s “way different” but I’m sure there are a couple of players no one believes will go in the 1st round. Maybe an O lineman or a Safety. There will be some names we are familiar with as well.

    Ultimately you may be right

The initial reports on Simmons is that he will be back to 100%. This is a top 10 player (Some say better)...... if he is available at 26, you almost HAVE to take him.... IMHO.... he IS BPA at 26

Simmons is a Pro Bowl candidate for the next 10-14 years.  What he does in year one is less important....  I believe that CB is a do it right, for the long term, kind of person.   This is why Clark is NOT wearing a horseshoe

    No short term fixes

Simmons would seem to be someone who would be grabbed by New England, Seattle, or even the Rams, before we pick at 34.

I am leaning more and more toward waiting until round 3 to look at WR (or 59)

I think one of Risner, McGary, or Little would be available at 34.......  I cant see us NOT getting an OL pick in one of the picks on day two

It could go DL, OL, then SS with first 3 picks

IF the Colts LOVE Isabella, (or Boyken) they trade up to early 3rd and get them

I think the build the lines MANTRA that gets repeated again and again will drive the choices

I agree there will be D and O linemen picked early. McGary is one to watch Day 2 given Mudd’s infatuation with the guy. But I’ll stick with my take: AJ Brown and Simmons. That would be a great 1-2 punch to start the draft. If it’s Simmons and McGary, I’ll be more than fine with that too. The next few days will be fun.

    In order, at 26

    Burns

    Simmons

    Wilkins

    Ferrell

    Lawrence

    Tillery

    Abrams

    Lindstrom

I really like this group, with one exception. I would move Simmons out and put AJ Brown in his place. If Simmons is there at 34, that’s the time to grab him. Reduces some of the risk by not blowing  a #1 Pick on an injured player who doesn’t come back 100%. I think he’ll be there at 34. And this team needs playmakers at WR. Brown would be a perfect and impactful fit.

I have to disagree about S. A guy that can cover and play alongside Hooker in the base defense would be very valuable. We have also seen how much immediate impact Ss can have in their rookie years. I don't think the Colts are looking for an in-the-box S...they have both Geathers and Kindred for that role. I think they want a guy that can do it all. Someone like Adderley or CGJ is likely in play at #26.

But I still think Ballard will move down, barring a LB or edge falling. If you look at some of the prospects they have been attached to...guys like Lindstrom and Jacobs...they are at positions that aren't immediate needs. I think Ballard wants to have another pick or two in that Day Two range so he has the flexibility to pull the trigger on just about any non-K position (the right QB might not even be off the board).

CGJ, perhaps. But I believe Adderley is projected to be a free safety. My guess is that a strong safety is taken but not until the second round. The depth and quality at this position is among the best in the draft.

What isn't going to last are excellent D-linemen. I suspect a very, very good one will be there at 26. And that will be the way the Colts roll. Wilkins, Tillery, or Lawrence, in that order.

As for trading down, you obviously have to have a willing partner. I am more and more convinced that there won't be a decent offer at that point in the draft, and that Ballard will stay put. The only reason for a team to trade up to 26 is for a QB, and I expect the good ones to be long gone at that point.

  12. NCF, a belated but heartfelt thank you for all the work you put into this.

    My quick thoughts:

    1. Wikins and Lawrence just might drop to us. I doubt Ferrell does. Either of those DTs would be a great addition to the line.

    2. It’s also very possible that Gardner-Johnson and AJ Brown are both there at 34. That would be a tough choice, but I would go with Brown. He reminds me of Reggie Wayne, and that kind of impact would do absolute wonders for the Colts’ offense. There will be other, comparable Safeties available at 59.

    3. I just don’t like Simmons at 26, not because he isn’t talented, but because he’s damaged goods and it’s not worth taking the chance he doesn’t heal.

  13. I hate to see this. The kid ran his heart out for Stanford in 2017. He’s Leveon Bell on steroids as far as his importance to that team. Should have come out for the draft then. Stuck it out for the team in 2018 and was saddled with a diminished O line and

diminished  overall talent and then got his draft status crushed by an ACL tear in their final game. If this isn’t a poster situation for doing what is best for yourself, I don’t know what is. He’s a big time talent and a great kid. I hope he heals and is able to pursue his dream, wherever that might lead him.
