Whilst Rivers leaving increases the chances of drafting a QB more likely, it may not necessarily mean they draft one early.

They very well could draft someone later in the draft (like Gordon or Hurts etc) and have them sit behind a vet (as the article below says someone like Cam Newton or Marcus Mariota) and draft O-line/Corner early

    https://www.profootballnetwork.com/los-angeles-chargers-targeting-cam-newton-philip-rivers/

"the word is that the Chargers would prefer someone with experience like Newton or Marcus Mariota, rather than drafting and developing a rookie quarterback. In fact, Pauline noted in his recent mock draft that the Chargers would likely prefer a highly rated offensive tackle or cornerback if one fell to them rather than a quarterback. Acquiring Newton could free up some options for them to do just that."

Makes sense for the Chargers to grab a short term vet such as Cam Newton.  They badly underachieved this year, and Rivers was a shadow of himself by the end of the season. But they need a QB of the future, and I'm betting they grab one early in the first. With Burrows and Tua gone by their pick, Herbert seems the odds on favorite to be their guy.

  2. I’ve been looking at the projected draft picks the Colts have for 2020, and the only extra picks I see are the #34 from Washington and a 6th round pick from the Chiefs. I was under the impression that the Colts received a conditional pick from Miami for Boehm...rumored to be a 6th rounder. Boehm played well for them this year....so where’s the pick? Anyone know?

    Now, Derek Carr......

Well done.  And I agree about Carr. . But I’d only give the Raiders pick # 44. Then grab the best DT and WR you can in the draft with picks 13 and 34 and you’re off to the races. No to bringing in any fading old QBs. That’s taking a step back.

  4. Armstead has been a disappointment up until now. Not a bust; just underachieving and average. IMO he has benefitted from the newly added presence of Bosa and from Buckner’s excellence. I doubt he’s retained by the Niners. Too expensive on his second contract and replaceable.

Meh, the knock on Love is that he doesn't have the finer points of quarterbacking down.  Going through progressions, looking off DB's, decision making.

Manning Passing Academy doesn't have pads or anything like that.  A lot of the impressions from that are going to be heavily based on the quality of one's arm.  And everyone knows Love has a high quality arm.

I suspect he attended the academy to pick up on the finer points of quarterbacking from the best there ever was. Another feather in his cap.

Yeah I don’t know why people try and brush that under the rug. Like when have you ever heard of a QB having a great sophomore year and then next year the entire coaching staff and offense (literally every starter except Love) leaves? To go from 32-6 to 16:15 means something definitely happened.

To be honest, Love’s biggest flaw is that he didn’t go to a Power 5 school. You put him on the teams that Tua, Burrow, and Lawrence have and you’re talking about him being the 1st overall pick.

Whoa. Not sure about that. But it wouldn't surprise me to see Love taken as the next QB after the big 3 of Burrow, Tua and Herbert. I suspect if the Colts don't take Love at 13, they will have to trade back up into the first round fairly soon thereafter if they want to nab him.

Solid players on the D line

Turay, Houston and Sheard. But we need some true defensive tackles that can put the ball and close the middle up. Kinlaw will be a great piece to add in the draft

I easily expect Ballard to draft 3 defensive lineman

Kinlaw will very likely be there at 13. And would be just what the Colts need.

  8. I think Love will be gone before the 34th pick, but I doubt he's gone before the 13th pick. However, the Colts could get lucky and Love lasts until later in the first round..... at which point they could manufacture a trade back into the 1st to nab him. Getting a top notch player like Kinlaw at 13 and getting Love also? THAT would be a home run.

    IMHO

This is one of 2-3 QBs that need to be considered in the draft

Eason has a cannon of an arm. But.... as mentioned by other posters,

thats not enough..... But he is someone that can be developed

By our pick, Tua, Burrows, and Herbert will be long gone

He isnt a guy that I would take at 13, but with one one or our 2nd rounds

    IMHO

There are 2QBs that are blue chip.... ALL of the other QBs (Eason included) have some excellent traits, but also hold a higher risk factor

    Love

(He will probably need to be drafted at 13 to get him, if he isnt gone already)

    Eason

    Gordon

I really would be happy with any of these QBs to take a chance on

I'm actually intrigued by Gordon. He throws a heckuva ball, and doesn't appear to be over rated because of the Lynch offense. If no Love, I suspect the Colts could nab him in the 2nd round. He'd be a solid consolation prize.

  9. Well, if Love is the Colts' guy and they want him badly enough, they have the ammo to move up. I doubt Love goes ahead of Herbert though. And Tua will go before both of them. Lots will happen between now and draft day though... veteran QBs moving to new teams; early trades like the one between the Colts and Jets a couple of years ago. So its way too early to know which teams will be competing with the Colts for a QB in the draft.

  10. Pass rush all day. See who has any semblance of talent, including a look at Turay pre-injury; see how Banogu progressed, if at all; see how Autry looked compared to last year, to see if there is any reason why his production regressed so much. Double teams?

  11. For what its worth, I still think he' ll end up back in NE.

He and Belichick will go out together. Brady just needs some more offensive pass catchers. If NE commits to that, and I think they will, then he's back for one last push.

But....if it doesn't happen, the Chargers are a legitimate alternative.

Would be ecstatic with hopefully getting Derrick Brown at 13. If Jordan Love is still there at the top of round 2 and Ballard and Reich really like him it's the icing on the cake.  Getting WR Justin Jefferson at 44 would make the first 3 picks a home run for Ballard.

This would be a grand slam, but Brown will almost certainly be gone before the Colts pick. Kinlaw, though, will likely be available, and he's a stud as well. Love and Jefferson could easily be there at 34 and 44. Kinlaw Love and Jefferson is a terrific consolation prize.

  13. So much will depend on the Combine and workouts. A QB like Jordan Love could climb into the late first round if he shines. But if Ballard is true to the podcast's premise, then a solid 3 tech DT at #13 should be there. And unless he blows the doors off his workouts, Love has a very good chance of being there at #34. I can see a DT-Love-WR scenario with the first three picks.

Draft A.  I believe in Tua.  Know he's had a lot of talent and that is a concern.  But you can watch film and see if he made good decisions, and see if he made a quality throw etc etc.  Tua was the guy for a couple years so he had time for the pressure to get to him or for the scouts to find major weaknesses.

I don't believe that his injury is going to affect him.

I don't think you can definitively say whether or not Tua's injury will impact him. I agree that a healthy version of this guy is outstanding. But he appears injury prone and this hip issue has yet to play itself out. If he declares for the draft, then you can assume that his medical team has cleared him. And even that won't get him a total pass until the NFL gets to do its own tests. Until then, expect Tua to be a large question mark.

Oh, Dear God, here we go....

It'll be the off-season from hell!

Everyone who was so smart last year, suddenly they are all suspect and incompetent.    Ballard, Reich and Flus.

I don’t suppose anyone might guess that because of injuries we are playing inexperienced guys who are learning on the job.   No, it can’t be that!   It has to be the front office and the coaching!

Once again the fans are smarter!

It’s going to be a long, LONG off-season.     :peek:

Honestly, though, the lack of pass rush is hurting the secondary. And the secondary has truly struggled in the second half. Turay's injury had a bigger impact than one might have suspected, and additionally,  there has been little if any pressure from the D-tackle position this year.  So Turay returning healthy along with getting somebody to bring pressure up the middle from the D-line is essential. This is the area where the Colts can cure some of their defensive woes. Flus will keep his job, IMO. He needs a few more pieces to make things gel .

  16. I think you can count on a new TE on the team====one who can stretch the field a bit. That is a missing ingredient to the Colts offense. I suspect Ebron is history,  so whether its a FA or the draft, its gonna happen. And needs to.

And he did well on his time with the Pats.   That’s not in dispute.

I’m only saying those holding 2017 against the guy are wrong.   That’s not how he’s measured, especially since the NFL community thought JB did well under terrible circumstances not of his making.

Judge him all you want by 2019, but people who are holding ‘17 against him are making a mistake.

I'm not a big JB fan, but I do agree with this comment. 2017 was as tough a situation for a young QB to step into as any I could imagine. Hardly a week under his belt and now he's the starter with a brand new system, a brand new team, and no time to work with the offense? JB did well just to stay alive. In fact, he had some very good moments.

Most of his problem is that he can't go through his progressions and fails to hit open receivers too often. That's on him, not the opposing defense

For me... (Im not an expert, by any means)

There are parts of JBs game that should be improving by this point in his career

He has had a few years now to pick this up

The reads are VERY slow, the touch is off, his mid and downfield accuracy isnt there.......

How much better could he get?

These two comments say it best IMO. JB is who he is, which is a middling talent at best. He is a great guy and solid locker room presence whom everybody wants to succeed.... but he simply lacks the skill set to do it. The Colts are stuck right now, and will have to acquire or draft the future at the position. Its going to be painful for at least another year while this plays out.
