yup, tremendous first year. i doubt he'll ever be a Kamara, McCaffrey, or Barkley, but he's a great 3-5th option who has great wheels. i hated when he started a couple games early when mack was down. he's not meant for every down use. if they use himevery once in a while on 2nd down and long, and obvious passing downs, he'll get his no doubt.

In that regard, he does remind me of Sproles, who is not an every down back but can be used to shake it up here and there carrying the ball. He is the modern gadget man who can run the ball, play out of the slot, go in motion, pull off a jet sweep, etc. I love the guy, and he will have a positive, important impact within the Colts offense next season. He might just get over the fumbleitis on ko/punt returns and take Rogers' spot. That would make him a total Sproles clone.

  2. Its pretty clear that Ballard felt he had the luxury of trading out of the 1st round because he had pick #34 in the arsenal. He's put himself in that position again next year if Washington is as mediocre as I think they'll be. And watching Reich's reaction at the end of Day 3 when they picked Okereke, it sounds like they pretty much got the guys they wanted anyway. Darn good job, if I may say so. The Grigson years have been put in the rear view mirror. This team has a Battlefield General in Ballard that is second to none.

  3. People need to keep their expectations in check. The Colts have a rugged schedule this year.  This is still a VERY young team. We’ve yet to see if they can muster a pass rush. Houston should help, provided he still has some gas in the tank, but he’ll need some

of the youngsters to step up as well.

And Funchess needs to come through to make the passing game click. Its likely going to take one more year of seasoning and another solid draft to see the big results people are wanting.  The Colts are definitely better, but not yet a SB caliber team.

Nice stuff. I really love how Ballard approaches free agency.

Tons of value to find if you're just patient and smart.

Exactly. This should be a good reminder to people that the FA game goes on long after the first week. Ballard waited; got quality; never overpaid.

Actually, the numbers are pretty complimentary of Hines if you're willing to look at advanced stats and dig a little deeper. If someone told you that in his rookie year he'd have 700+ all purpose yards, you'd probably say "heck yes".

He had more yards from scrimmage than anyone not named TY, Mack, or Ebron. That's more than Rogers, Wilkins (who had 20 more touches than hines), Inman, Pascal, and Grant.

Well said. And again, it bears repeating: he was a ROOKIE. I look for even bigger things from him this year and his being a vital piece of a diverse and creative offense.

  6. Werner simply wasn’t talented. He failed for that reason, not for lack of effort. But WHAT did Grigson see in this guy? No bend whatsoever. No instincts. Just awful.

  7. This guy has great instincts and a relentless motor. His pass rush moves may be limited but that is teachable to a great athlete. Mr Mathis? Your new pupil.

TJ Green had zero instincts and a so so motor. That is not teachable.

Banogu is starting his Colts career at linebacker.   Specifically, the SAM.

Ballard says he can play all three LB spots.

Says he will ALSO play DE and even kick in at DT in certain situations.

But he he is NOT being viewed as a DE. Linebacker is his first home.

Interesting. He fits best in a 3 man d-line front, you’d think, acting as the rush LB. The Colts obviously see a lot more.

    Agree overall......

You may be right on Rogers, but he does the unheralded KR job as well.... not great.... Not bad....

Maybe Campbell gets that role here.......

I have to believe that Campbell represents the biggest threat to Carlos Rogers’ future with the Colts. Not just because of his skill set as a receiver, but because he can return kicks, especially punts.

If it was a grand jury then it was enough to indict, not arrest. If evidence is brought before a grand jury it is almost inevitable that you will be indicted. Different requirements between law and fact for grand jury indictments.

One should never forget the old adage: A good Prosecutor can get a Grand Jury to indict a ham sandwich.

I just listened to Ballards conference and he said "We like our safeties". And he mentioned Geathers and for the 2nd time about George Odum and his "upside". Also mentioned Mathias Farley. Im getting a bit skeptical we are or were ever looking for a safety.

You could argue that Cornerback was in a similar position before they took The Rock. Several players they are high on together with the entrenched starters. I still think a Safety is high on the Colts’ wish list.

Here is Chris Landry's pre draft quick hit scouting report on Rock Ya Sin and Parris Campbell-

    **************************************************************

Quick scouting report on 2 of the Colts draft choices (Pre draft from a real paid scout)-

    Rock Ya Sin ( #32 )

Good size, speed, toughness, ball skills, really quick feet playing in off coverage. Very fluid when he turns and opens up. No wasted step on his plant drive, closes in a hurry. On press coverage, he needs to do a better job using his hands. Occasionally gets turned around by shiftier wideouts. Has speed to recover when out of position, plays the ball in the air well.

Aggressive in run support, reliable tackler in space. His competitiveness and athleticism is outstanding, and makes him a potential starter in the NFL. Plays with greater length than his 5'11" measurement. That combined with his quickness, suddenness, and loose hips allows him to stay low in his peddle and close very quickly in off coverage. Needs to add strength and improve in fighting in run support.

Plays mostly off man coverage, and is very good in that technique. Not a great tackler/wrapper, but can really cover, inside and outside and can a really good player at the next level. Grade at #32, so he's predicted to be taken late 1st round or very early second round.

    Parris Campbell  ( #62 )

Reminds of Jeremy Maclin, fluid receiver, kick returner, difference make with his speed, change of direction, ability after the catch.  Very good size, long arms, good athlete, strong hands, good route runner. Can separate quickly, good runner after the catch, fast and elusive. Not a very good blocker, limited route tree (as is case most of the time) and can have some 'concentration drops'.  But a very productive inside from the slot with bubble screens, crossing routes, hitches, some seam routes etc.   Has quick cutting ability, good burst and run instincts. He was a high school RB, and track guy. Can turn a short catch into a long gain.

He has outside versatility as well. He has really good value here in the second round, may be even higher in round 2 after his workout numbers. This guy is going to be a better player. Right now looking at him (routes, production, running) you wouldn't have him this high. But this is where scouting comes in. You see the ability he has, you see what he can be, With_Development, where 2 years from now folks may say why wasn't this guy taken in the first round?

He has to improve his physicality at the catch point, and become more productive as a downfield receiver. (I assume increase his route tree)  Right now he's mid to late second grade.

    {Chris Landry pre draft quick report}

Really good stuff. I’m assuming Landry isn’t quite as glowing over Banogu and Okereke? Could you share those reviews?

With regards to the bolded; weight and durability are key factors in our scheme IF we don't have the heavies up front to prevent OL from reaching the second level.  My concern with not taking a heavy that sucks up 2 OL is that the wear and tear on our LB crew will eventually shorten their effectiveness.  Hopefully they can continue to shed blockers to offset that, but a Dexter Lawrence type would have helped.

For the pass, I agree, speed and ability to tackle in space, is what it's all about.

Dexter Lawrence may well have been their choice if he’d lasted to 26. In fact, he may be the reason they pulled the trigger on the Redskins trade.

That said, There will be a DT taken today by the Colts.

  14. I figure the Colts are still in the hunt for a safety. They could get a decent one like Hooker or Gardner Johnson by trading up in the 4th using the extra 5th round pick as the chip. Otherwise I suspect these guys will be long gone by the time the Colts pick in the 4th. Any thoughts out there on who, how, and when this might happen?
