I'll never understand the comments over the kid's weight?

He's already gained about 15 pounds of good weight and he still looks thin.

So,  he'll gain more good weight over the next year or two.     Just like Turay will.    Which is what Ballard has said he expects.     These guys are not finished products.

Find the pass rushers and work on the rest of their game and address their issues.    But you have to find the pass rush FIRST.

    And Burns has got it.

    Exactly.

Screams like a Patriots player to me, those are the kind of guys Belichick likes. I can see him being a Patriot. He took a former QB in Edelman and played him in different spots, offense, defense and ST till Edelman settled in as PR and WR. I wouldn't be surprised if he goes at the end of Day 2 in Round 3 by some team due to his potential.

This is what the Draft Network says about him:

    https://thedraftnetwork.com/player/kahale-warring

Chad, its interesting you mention the Pats. I was just watching the NFL channel and they were discussing what the Patriots would do now that Gronk is retiring. They mentioned them taking 2 TEs in the draft, one very early and another in the 3-4-5 round area. They specifically mentioned Warring as one of the second tier guys they could see Belichick going after.

  3. Yeah, I expect him to be gone too. But if he's still there at 26, I don't doubt for one second that Ballard would pull the trigger. I like Burns' potential. And the Colts can't have enough pass rushers IMO. I don't care that they just signed Houston. That is short term and a guy who has been injured a lot recently. I'm as excited as anyone else with Houston joining the team....just trying to stay realistic.

But we digress...... I expect Burns to be gone by the mid first round.

  4. ColtsBlueFL, your critique is fair. Here is what little I know:

I watched him at the Combine and became intrigued. I read up on him and this guy was an alpha athlete prior to college....he just didn't play football. We're talking standout athlete in the following: water polo; swimming; soccer; lacrosse; basketball; tennis. He got into football late in high school. So, he is a bit like the basketball players we've converted to TE, except with much more experience, because he has a full college career to rely upon. He's not green, but he's not a final product either. He has good speed; great size, and soft hands.

From what I've read, this kid is a great athlete and is likely to get much, much better as a TE in time and with pro training. But I also think he will still be around in the 4th or 5th round, when he'd be one of those value picks we all hope and expect Ballard to dredge up.

Just a guy to talk about. The more I review the situation, the more I believe the Colts will indeed draft a TE this year. Too many unknowns facing the position in 2020. However, with the emphasis likely on defense in the draft, picking a TE seems like a Day 3 event.

    Where will Inman fit with

       1. Signing of DF

       2. Return of Cain and Marcus Johnson from injuries

       3.  Maturation of Fountain

       4. Possible Drafting of a WR

This is the dilemma. I expect the Colts to draft a WR. Likely high. And that creates a logjam.

TY; Funchess; Draft pick; Cain; Rogers; Johnson/Fountain. That's six right there, with the 7th on the practice squad.  You sign Inman and you delay, or potentially terminate, the chances of Johnson or Fountain to be a Colt, IMO. That doesn't make signing Inman the wrong move: he was the team's most reliable receiver last season not named TY. But it does create a problem for a team that won't carry more than 6, and potentially only 5, WRs.

  6. There has been lots of talk about taking one of the two Iowa TEs early in the draft. And I do believe its worth discussing the future of the Colts TE position. What appears a current position of strength could disintegrate if Doyle's hip proves a chronic problem, and Ebron want mega $ in 2020. The kid I've highlighted, Kahale Warring, is an ascending talent at the TE position. He is one of those classic late to the program TEs, but he's played the position throughout college. He's a heck of an athlete, and can probably be had in Day 3. I like this kind of move, because he can learn at the hands of the starting TEs, and grow in to their heir apparent very quickly if he's as good as I think he'll be. Also, the Colts don't have to spend a high pick on the TE position.

    Thoughts?

  7. The fact that Mathis sees something special in him, and that the kid is working his tail off this year, ought to send all Colts fans into a happy dance. This is precisely what you want to have happen; a genuine but raw talent tutored by an all time great who learns what it takes to become a succcessful Pro. All we need now is to see the results of the hard work. The talent is already there. I’m excited.

    Respectfully, I would disagree

This defense.... the VAST majority of the time, the CB is in zone coverage

They must be able to come up, and make a tackle.

According to the "experts" Deandre is a man to man CB.........

We dont play man to man.... very often

He is VERY light, and played at 180 ish, most of the season.

He would be a fish out of water and a wasted pick

    Additionally

Ballard doesn't value CBs like he does the lines.....

A decent CB, that can play a zone defense can be had in mid rounds

I would MUCH rather use pick 26 on a DE, Possibly a UT that can also play DT, SS, or a WR.

There is so much that  I agree with your post..... well said.

CB should be aggressive and move up into the top 15 and get an impact player (assuming he sees one there of course), not just a solid contributor at 26 imo and beyond.

I don't recall us ever being in such a solid position with our current roster.  Now is the time to go get a player, not wait.  Even if we end up with just half the picks we currently have, I'd take it if that meant getting more potential impact players.

Disagree. There will be an impact player at 26 and 34. If you trade one of these picks, make it 34 to a team that has been salivating overnight for a player since the end of Day 1. I wouldn't move down but a little in round 2 and extract a high price from the other team., whether picks this year or next.

  10. Leon Sandcastle.....you are showing some age and a bit of nostalgia there, my friend. Most of the posters here have no idea what/who you're talking about....

Sandcastle could run like the wind, but in today's game, I'm not sure he gets away with his reluctance to hit. He may have liked the "neon" lights a bit too much also.

As to your mock, I like it! I'd hope to see a WR picked earlier than the 4th round, but then again, I'd have no problem with any of the picks in rounds 1-3.

I'd stay clear of that fraud Sandcastle, though. Locker room culture remains important.

  11. I agree with the consensus that Al is gone. He lost his starting job; he’s getting long in the tooth; and the Colts are moving on from him and potentially a few others as well. Hassan Ridgeway, are you listening?  It’s shape up or ship out time. A DT selected early in the draft will be a direct threat  to your future in Indy. Here’s hoping you take it to the next level this year.

  12. Interesting argument here. I think if an Edge is available unexpectedly at 26 the Colts grab him and I wouldn't blame them a bit. Pass Rush is the weak link and the dire need for this team going forward. The better it is, the better the D. You can't have enough.

No alpha edge rusher? Then if Tillery is there, I think they take him also. He's a major talent with a high ceiling. Lawrence? I really have a hard time seeing that. He's the epitome of a 3-4 nose tackle. Just not a fit for the 4-3.

But....if the run on D line talent is heavier than we think it will be, the argument for a WR; S; or even OT gets much stronger. CB.....I don't see that. LB.....I doubt that too.

This draft is going to be surprising, unpredictable and totally fun to watch.

Inman coming back is a no-brainer (from the information that we have). Obviously the upside is capped...but you know what you are getting...and that is a dependable WR who can catch and has built a rapport and trust with Luck...that no WR (outside of Hilton) has.

Luck had a 120 passer rating when targeting Inman...that is better than both Ebron and Hilton. Obviously, the type of usage (more efficient routes) plays a role...but that is damn near an elite connection (ranked #11 in the NFL last year...two spots behind Brees/Thomas).

You make an excellent case for signing Inman. I agree; he's reliable and has some solid juju with Luck.

I would tend to disagree ....... I STILL think that we get a WR talent in the draft

If you think about this group, we have one player shifty, and speedy player that can cleanly separate which is Hilton.  If HE gets hurt, we are in a BIG problem

We have no true depth there...... not good

The others are plus 6ft, type of recievers

I think a player like Cambell or Isabella, might be that player that can get open and move the sticks between the 20's

I love me some Butler, (Yeah.....  I liked him before it was COOL  :) ) and I know he is enormous, but he could stand still and catch the pass with his long arms (he doesnt need as much separation)

But think he may actually fall in round one..... and be gone before 34

    We will see

I agree with you about drafting a WR, though I think Butler, as promising as he is, has the same separation problem the other WRs other than TY have. On the other hand, I see a player like Campbell fitting like a glove with this Colts team. They will have to take him by pick #34 because I suspect he'll be gone quickly thereafter. And I would have no problem whatsoever with the Colts making that pick.

  15. I'm not sure what the DraftTek rankings look like for Tillery, but I like him at #26, with Parris Campbell at #34. I would also switch the picks of Hooker and Edwards.

I don't know as much about Joe Jackson as I should, and will take a longer look at him.

People forget how good Bryce Love was before he got hurt. He's a value pick where you have him.

    Good job!

Been so consumed with defense I didn't give it much thought. Would actually be a good move. To be honest so would that TE Hockenson sp? Both great future moves

While I still think the only offensive player taken in Day 1 or 2 would be a WR, I can also see the TE argument. Doyle has some questions now about his hip; Ebron is a FA after this season; and TE is a very important part of the Reich offensive scheme. I doubt Hockenson would be picked, since he's likely a Round 1 guy, but another top TE could get the nod later in Day 2.

  17. First of all, I am always grateful for a board member taking the time to plot out these scenarios. They are fun to read, think about, and critique. That said: I would hate these trades.

Scenario one: You get a CB you don't need and two late 2nds for your first rounder. Ugh.

Scenario two: Pick #34 is almost like having a first round pick. Plus, you will be fielding calls all night by teams who see who wasn't selected in round one and want to grab a player early in Day 2.  There should be a few juicy offers. I wouldn't trade it unless I had a short drop down in the second round and got a third rounder for the trouble. Otherwise the talent pool is far shallower by the time you pick in the late 2nd. Not doing it.

  18. Interesting discussion. Superman, if, in this draft scenario being discussed, the difference in player rankings between the TE and the DT were, as you said, 18 for the TE and 37 for the DT, you pick the TE. As I understand it, that would be a substantial difference. But what if its 18 for the TE and 28 for the DT?

I do believe that there is a point where BPA and Position of Need converge to make a "slight reach" or "deviation" from the pure Board a sensible move. I'm pretty sure that's how most of these calls are made on draft day.

Each team obviously has their line in the sand on how far to deviate from the Board, but if the Colts need a DT, and the difference between the TE and DT choices is pretty close, I don't doubt they are going DT, even if the TE is higher on the Board. JMO.

  19. Lynch could be a sneaky good signing on a one year prove it deal. He has a lot of talent; he's also been his own worst enemy in the past. Clearly Ballard is curious, and must have made a few calls to even bring him in.

Lets face it: the Colts are very, very needy in the pass rush department. Getting a diamond in the rough at this point in Free Agency would be outstanding. I'm not holding my breath, but if Ballard thinks the guy has turned things around enough to sign him, Lynch has the potential to solve some large problems for the Colts next year.
