I did a mock draft today trying to make every pick within the first 3 BPA and came out with this

    13 Justin Herbert, QB

    34 Neville Gallimore, IDL

    44 Ross Blacklock, IDL

    75 Cole Kmet, TE

    112 Gabriel Davis, WR

    142 Tyler Johnson, WR

    173 Yasir Durant, IOL

    190 Levonta Taylor, CB

    204 Binjimen Victor, WR

alot of needed help right now, what do you think

Herbert isn't lasting until 13. That's just silly. Kmet is a 2nd round talent. I'd replace Herbert with Love if I'm just throwing stuff up at the wall to see what sticks. I'd do this:

    13: Love

    34: Gallimore

    44: Kmet

    75: Johnson

Day 1 and 2 would be pretty darn good from my perspective if this happened, and its not unrealistic.

    Watch his tape

He is hitting guys longer than 20 yards in more than a few,  the ball still has juice

His release is very fast and possibly the quickest of the top 5 QBs

    He is also very mobile

He IS a prospect that needs some time to bulk up and add strength

    But......

We need to come away with at least one QB to try and develop

It may be Love, Eason, or Gordon

I would be happy with any of these 3 as long as we don’t give up the farm to get them

Amen to this. I agree. The Colts could find a gem beyond the Big 3. And honestly, if they are going to find a QB and not mortgage the future, they won't be in play for Tua or Herbert.

Montana was listed at 6'2, 200lbs, so not smaller.

Also at the time when Montana came into the league there were fewer than 12-300+ lbs players in the NFL (I heard that during a game one time but here is an article talking about NFL size).  in 2010 there were 532 players over 300lbs (http://www.espn.com/espn/wire/_/section/nfl/id/5443459)

Even beast like Mike Singletary were 6'0 230lbs.

So Montana's weight 41 years ago is not a legitimate comparison.

But again, I'm a fan of Gordon's and a fan of the Colts drafting Gordon but to act like being under 200lbs is not a negative is not looking at reality.

Oh, and one other comparison. Montana lasted until the 3rd round of the draft because scouts and so called experts thought he lacked a strong enough arm. Now please, I'm not comparing Montana and Gordon. But there are some striking physical similarities.

Even though he played a few years ago, my point in comparing Montana's size to Gordon is that one of the all time greats was about the exact same size. And Gordon hasn't even hit an NFL weight room yet. So IMO his size will be fine. Its the discussion about the arm strength that seems much more relevant.

On that note,  I look at Gordon zipping the football with that wrist flick of his and he looks like he delivers the ball with pace and accuracy up to 25 yards out. This guy doesn't have a noodle arm. No, he can't throw it out of the stadium, but in today's NFL, that isn't required. I like the kid for the Colts, and it looks like he can be had in the 2nd round right now.

It's not his height, 6'2 is fine for an NFL QB.  But at 199lbs... that is a bit light.

Ever take a good look at Joe Montana? Especially when he first came into the league? Smaller than Gordon. And he played when the QB had no protection. Gordon isn't too small. And they can beef him up over the next year in the weight room. A year and a half later, at the beginning of the 2021 season: 6'2.5", 210 lbs.  That's not a midget.

To be fair, the author of that piece later explains why team usually refrain from going on shopping sprees the year the CBA expires. So... even though we might spend some, I'm not really expecting us to go ham with it.

I don't expect Ballard to go crazy either, but if the right piece is there, I think he'll pay the money....such as a DT who can improve the pass rush.

  7. I still think that the Colts are in an ideal position to grab three high quality impact players in the first 2 days. I’d hate to see them trade out of the 13 pick unless the payoff is just so great in 2020 draft picks that Ballard can’t resist.  Like a 2-5 spot drop in the 1st for an additional 2nd or very early 3rd round 2020 pick. You can live with that because the payoff is now and the price isn’t painful.  I want to see the team improve this year with difference makers.... especially in the passing game. The Colts need to improve now.

That said, I DO agree with Stitches that if the Brass believes the future franchise QB is gettable, you use your 2020 firepower to grab him now. Finding a long term replacement for Brissett is the highest priority.... and would be the biggest difference maker of all if they nail the pick.

This is one of my preferred options in case we don't like any of the QBs in the draft or they get taken before us - trade back and get a future asset to make it easier to move up next year. The only reason I might be reluctant to do it is if AC retires and we have a legit LT there for us to take at 13. Or if a true blue chip prospect is there for us to take. IN this case I would make the pick and try to trade out of #34, potentially for a future 1st if such a deal is available.

The thing is, at what point are you just churning draft capital for the future and passing on genuinely needed talent? Ballard made the big trade down into the middle of the 2nd round last year in order to get a high pick in this year's 2nd round. Then he  turns around and trades that high 2nd rounder for what.....a low first rounder next year? You begin to chase your tail after a while. Grab the talent now. You can't build through the draft if you refuse to use your picks on the talent that is only going to be  available on Day 1 and early Day 2. At some point, a bunch of low 2nd rounders and 3rd rounders gets you some nice depth, but not the game changers you need. Time to go for it!

  9. That 34 pick is like a late round first as far as quality of players available. No way the Colts should trade down to the 55 spot to pick up a 3rd. Honestly, this team needs Playmakers! At QB, DT, WR. And they need them now. The Colts are in a great position to grab genuine talent at all 3 of those positions. Any trade in the 1st two rounds should be limited to a very small move down in return for a day 2 pick.

  10. Thanks for the hard work on this thread.

I like the first three draft picks. I can definitely see that happening.

The Colts need play makers and Love, Gallimore and Aiyuk would fill that need. I don't believe Adams will last until the 4th round though. Maybe the third round if his injury history continues to dog him past the combine etc. He'd be a great value in the 3rd round.

I'd love to see Hargrave and Hooper as free agent pickups. Those two positions make sense in FA since the dline cannot get better by the draft alone IMO. The Colts also need an impact TE.

All in all a fun and well thought out off season.

Brady - stays with Pats (or retires). Fans would explode if they let him go.

Carr - stays with the Raiders. Gruden drafts WR and CB early.

    Tannehill - stays with Titans

Stafford - stays with Lions. They need to draft DL and OL big time.

Newton - stays with Caroline. New coach gives him a fresh slate

Winston - stays with Tampa, TB drafts OT and RB

Rivers - to Miami to enable recovery for Tua, LAC drafts Herbert

Mariotta - signed somewhere as a backup.

    Bridgewater - stay in NO

This looks likely to me. A couple of modifications: Perhaps Rivers to Tampa on a short contract and they draft a QB to sit behind him. That would mean Winston is cut loose. Who knows where he goes?  I think the Dolphins are likely to hold on to Fitz Magic and let him coach up Tua. I do believe the Chargers will draft Herbert. Makes too much sense. They don't have to win now, but they do need to attract new fans and Herbert is talented and a fresh start.

  12. I looked up what the Chiefs had to pay Buffalo to trade up and grab Mahomes.

The Chiefs traded up from pick 27 in the first round to get pick 10.

They gave up pick 27 and their 3rd round pick that year and also their first round pick the next year.

If that is the price to move up 17 slots, the Colts shouldn't have to mortgage the future to move up in this year's first round. Say Carolina is your trade partner; that would mean the Colts would trade up from 13 to 7. The trade value chart, for what that is worth, says they would be slightly over paying if they traded the 13th and 44th pick for the 7th. I'd do that in a heartbeat if I believed we were looking at our future franchise QB.

  13. For those on this Board who believe the Colts must get a new QB (and I include myself in this group), most of the focus has been on drafting a new QB. But the team picking in front of the Colts, the newly minted Las Vegas Raiders, potentially may move on from their starter. Derek Carr is not a top tier QB, but IMO, he's significantly better than Jacoby Brissett. He is signed through 2022, at a salary averaging around $19m per year. The Raiders are in good shape under the salary cap, but they are expected to be aggressive in free agency. Getting Carr's salary off the books would help their free agency goals.

So lets say the Raiders approach the Colts about trading a draft pick for Carr, and the Colts are interested. What do you think the Colts would have to give up to get him? I'm thinking he could be had for the Colts' second pick in the 2nd round (#44). The Raiders don't have a second round pick. Or....perhaps it would only take pick #75 in the third round. Maybe a swap of pick #44 for Carr and one of the Raiders' three third round picks?

Just interested to see what the Board thinks about this.

  14. I'm chuckling at the hysteria over the Colts having to mortgage the ranch to get a QB they want. I truly believe they can wait, and pounce ahead of the Raiders or another team by trading 13 and 34, move a couple of spots up the ladder, and get Love or Herbert, whichever one is left. And remember, the Raiders may decide to roll with Carr. If they stick with Carr, they aren't going to pick a QB at 12. So lets calm down and be patient. If the Colts want a QB in the first round, they possess the ammo with picks this year to get it done. No need to mortgage the future.

  15. One guy that hasn’t been mentioned in this thread is Hunter Bryant from Washington. He’s the kind of “receiver first” TE  the Colts are missing right now. Great route runner with hands and speed. And I think he could still be on the Board in the 3rd round. Someone to keep an eye on.

  16. Its early, but so what. Obviously, the Sr. Bowl, Combine, and personal workouts will change the ultimate draft order, but I like these guys regardless.

This mock assumes our LT re-ups with the Colts. Otherwise, they would have to address that slot earlier than I do. It also assumes that Jordan Love goes in the late first round, and that the Colts don't trade up to grab him.

    1. Javon Kinlaw, DT.

    2 (a) Brandon Aiyuk, WR

    2 (b) Anthony Gordon, QB

    3. Hunter Bryant, TE

    4. Matt Peart, OT

This is the offense heavy draft I expect Ballard to pursue. The team needs playmakers; I think this gets them four new ones. Kinlaw is the exception to an offensively oriented draft; we all know the Colts need a 3-tech DT, and he's both a stud and a high character person. Ballard's kind of guy.
