  1. With the oline playing better, until the 4th, I'm going to hold final judgement of the offense until I see Hilton, Moncrief, Allen, and Dorsett on the field at the same time.  We were without 3 of them in the 4th and that killed us as much as anything.  And, here I go with could of, should of, would of's, if Luck would have put some more heat on the ball to Hilton that was reviewed and the catch was reversed, we could have kept the drive going.  Plenty of blame to go around, thats for sure.  And Doyle's pass blocking really disappointed me.  I thought the loss of Allen was big and I'm not a big fan.  The hopes of being better than a 500 team are slim to none with this bottom of the barrel defense.  We need to draft linebackers next year like we drafted o line this year.  Hit it and hit it hard.

  2. Yes, the linebackers are the worst positional group by far on the Colts.  Ayers is the only one that shows some ability to stop both the run and defend the pass (on a limited sample size).  With Arthur Jones coming back, as suggested in other threads, maybe the Colts should switch to a 4 - 3 as their base defense.  That way, we would only have 3 crappy linebackers on the field at the same time.  Heck, figure out a way to play a 5 - 2- 4    or a 4 -2 -5 and get one more liabilty off the field.  JK  In all seriousness, I love it when Adams, Geathers, Green, and Davis are in there at the same time.  Just am not happy with the #2 corner situation.  On run downs, I wonder how we would do with Langford, Jones, Parry, Ridegeway, and Anderson in at the same time with Jackson and Ayers or Mcnary as the linebackers.

  3. Actually, I'm not throwing random crap at the wall.  You can look up the news article yourself.  Grigson said Green would thrive as a CB if necessary.  So, I guess if Davis, Robinson, and Butler can't go this week.  We should absolutely make no effort to try Green at CB if the other CB's Morris and Melvin get absolutely thrashed, even though we are 4 deep at safety (a good safety group).  Makes sense.  Why try and put in a temporary fix to try and put the best defense out there on the field against the Texans?  Better to concede to a loss than jeopardize his long term development I guess.

The Texans still have a lot of talent on the defensive side of the ball.    They might eat our o-line for dinner.

And if we made the Bears offense look great,  I fear what we might do to Osweiller and the Texans!

    Color me nervous.......

Do I think we CAN win?      Yes.      Do I think we WILL win?     Don't know.....

For what its worth to those who think PFF has some analytical value, Luck is currently ranked 3rd, Hoyer is ranked sixth and Osweiller has taken over the 32nd spot that last week belonged to Mariotta.  Its going to be a tough game, but Osweiller should probably be the least of our worries.  I was over on the Texans forum, and it sounds like they have seen enough of him.  I just wish Melvin would start over Robinson.  Robinson is literally the 4th worst corner in the league.  What do we have to lose.  Give the young guy a shot.  Fuller and Hopkins will be a handful for Davis.  They will be more than a handful for Robinson - they will leave him in the dust and give Osweiller really easy wide open passes.  If they do start Robinson, I hope he fakes another embarrassment injury and pulls himself.

OP...what is the source for the ratings you shared? Curious is all.

PFF's draft grades by position.  I would share the link, but I don't want to get in trouble sharing data people pay money for.  I'm sure Castonzo isn't the only tackle in the league getting pushed around from time to time.  The edge rushers are getting paid big money too.

  6. Meh, if it 3rd and long, teams had figured they could just throw a long ball to whoever Cro was guarding and draw a holding call.  I actually prefer Melvin over anyone not named Davis.  But, Butler has been growing on me.  He just can't get the injury bug to stop biting him.

Ayers is one of the few linebackers on this team who I think actually has some coverage ability.  He moves pretty well in coverage and has a good eye for the football.   They used to drop him back in coverage in New England.  I've seen enough in his history to say he could play ILB on passing downs if they chose to do it.

Morrison and Jackson are terrible against the pass.  Ayers is by far the best against the pass.  Mcnary is good against the pass as well.  I'm all for Ayers and Mcnary being in there on passing downs at ILB.  Next year, hopefully we can get 1 of these guys in the draft - Raekwon McMillan 6-2 240 Ohio State, Reuben Foster 6-1 240 Alabama, Devonte Fields 6-4 245 Louisville.  They should all be there when we pick in 1st round if we choose to go that way.  And, I would love to get Zach Cunningham 6-4 230 Vanderbilt.  He should be there in the 2nd.  PFF has picked McMillan, Foster, and Cunningham as the ILBs for their dream team based on past and current performances.  PFF also has picked Myles Garrett, Derek Barnett, and Tim Williams as their edge rushing dream team.  Although Tim Williams is the smallest of the 3, he has created pressure on 30% of his rushes over the last 3 seasons while all other edge rushers have settle around 10ish %.

  8. Showed Castanzo and Mewhort above average and Kelly finally hit average.  Haeg and Good were graded very poorly.  But, I do agree with cornerback gradees for sure.  Seems like alot more pressure was coming from right side.  Haeg was getting bulled over and it looks like they didnt know how to hand off stunts.  But, I'll never claim to be a great xs and os guy.  Just trying to remember from what I semi casually observed at the sports bar.

And I would say Dudeski will put in his 2 cents before the night is over so there is no confusion to where he stands on PFF.

  9. Passes the eye test to me.

    Safety:

    Mike Adams                  80.7            Above Average

    Clayton Geathers          80.1            Above Average

    Matthias Farley             70.9             Average

    T J Green                      63.0            Below Average

By far our best position group.  Grigs and Pags get kudos for this (4 keepers)

    Cornerbacks:

    Rashaan Melvin             67.2           Below Average

    Darius Butler                  57.3           Poor

Vontae Davis                  57.1           Poor - not doing good on run defense (41.9)

    Darryl Morris                  45.6            Poor

Patrick Robinson            39.7            Yes, that's a 39.7.  Cut that meat.  Soft and he sucks.  Another bad FA signing by Grigs.

Hoping Vontae and Rashaan Melvin improve and Butler stays healthy and does what he does.  Darryl Morris - meh.

Right now, this group is * poor.

  10. I guess there was a reason NFL teams passed on him until the later rounds.  Our best linemen were drafted in the 1st and 2nd rounds.  Shame we didn't pull the trigger on Whitehair.  We would have been set at every offensive line position except RT this early in the season.  Not trying to play Monday morning QB with the draft, but I really wanted Kelly and Whitehair.  Hoping Haeg, Good, and or Clark develop, but not holding my breath.  We need to Keep Luck healthy for another 15 years and I'm probably one of the few on here that would be ok with the Colts taking someone like Feeney in the 1st.  OT class seems to be weak so that would be a good excuse for Grigs and Co. to give Haeg, Good, and Clark another year to prove they can play RT in the NFL.

Also wouldn't be opposed to taking a stud RB in the 2nd.  Everybody says RB's can be taken in the later rounds, but that logic doesn't make sense, at least when applied to the Colts.  The only years we have had a good running game is when we had either Dickerson, Faulk, James, or Addai.  All 1st round picks.  Brown was the anomaly.  Flame away.  And yes, I'm aware we need edge rushers and ILB's, but Luck is priority one and I don't see his pass protection getting much better with the current line.  At least the right side.  Number 50 rocked him today.  His head hit the turf hard.  Grigson needs to keep using high draft picks until its fixed because he sucks at finding OL talent via FA.

  11. I read the same PFF article and noticed that Hoyer actually graded out higher than luck with the same scenarios today.  So, good job by each QB today.  Also noticed that Freeman and Trevathon (sp?) scored very well compared to our ILB's.  Probably one of the big reasons they had a much better running game today.

Ridgeway seems to be coming along quite nicely and Butler > Robinson.
