  1. I'm feeling pretty good right now about next year.  We took the Panthers to OT with Pep calling the plays.  The very next week, we beat the Broncos with Chud in command of the offense.  Who knows what the team could have blossomed into if Luck would have not played his last game against the Broncos.  I have faith that Pagano, Grigs, and all their new assistant coaching talent will be able to figure out the missing pieces and get them through the draft and FA.  I think we're a lot closer to the promised land than most people think.  Everyone knows we need 1 or 2 upgrades at OLB, another NT for depth or upgrade (I like Parry), and a CB to pair with Vontae.  On offense, we need a feature RB to pair with Gore, and a C, RG, and RT for both depth and upgrade purposes.  That's 8 positions.  1st 5 picks in draft and 3 smart FA acquisitions should take care of at least 5 of them (I'm assuming 3 won't pan out).

  2. Assuming we don't pick up a FA olineman, I think we would be much improved if we drafted either Decker, Conklin, ot Spriggs in the 1st to upgrade RT.  In the 2nd, draft Voltz, Fuller, or Martin to upgrade C. And either Garnett or Tretola in the 3rd for RG.  Cut Harrison and Louis.  We would then have quality backups as well in Reitz, Thornton, Holmes, and Good when one of the starters eventually goes down.  Sign FA's to fill the holes on defense until next year's draft comes around.

  3. I'll side with the locker room as well.  There aren't any options out there that I like except Harbaugh and he isn't going any where.  Marvin Lewis is still in Cincinnatti, Rivera is still in Carolina, Tomlinson in still in Pittsburgh, etc and they've all missed the playoffs at some point.  But, for God's sake lets kick Pagano to the curb for one year of not making the playoffs.  Surely all the other 20 teams that missed the playoffs will fire their coaches as well.  Lets give Andrew his 3rd new coach in his 1st 5 years.  Luck has to be loving the continuity with this team.  Luck and Pep were a big reason this team missed the playoffs

  4. Pags - Luck - Chud are 1-0 in their only game together against the number one defense and probably the number one seed in the AFC.  Who knows what the Colts could have done if those 3 could have played out the remainder of the season together.  Players like Pags and play hard for him.  Saban is a baby and a quitter if he doesn't win.  Payton let bounty gate go on right under his nose.  Sorry, I'd rather have a quality human being like Pags than Sean.  What have the Saints done so well that the Colts haven't over the last 4 years?  Be careful what you wish for because I could see the Colts doing a lot worse than 8-8 with the hand they were dealt this year with a different coach.  Players could have easily quit on the season.  Irsay needs to sign Pags to a 1 year (make it or break it)  deal that Pags will hopefully accept, and demand Grigs fix the offense with combination of OL and RB's and at least see if we can get the Luck back on track next year.  Get rid of Grigs at the end of next year if he can't get the offense fixed this off season.

  5. Chuck turned down a modest contract extension hoping to extract more from Irsay after leading the Colts to a superbowl appearance and got burnt.  Irsay isn't going to come to Chuck and give him a better contract offer after missing the playoffs entirely.  He's not going to offer him the same type of contract terms

that Chuck turned down.  Pagano may not be the biggest problem, but his ego and pride certainly played a big part in him not getting extended,  Live by the sword, die by the sword.

  6. Give Mewhort a shot at center since he hasn't blown anyone away at G ot T.  When Costanzo gets healthy try   Costanzo, Reitz, Mewhort, Thornton, Good (our 5 best linemen).  Herremans, Louis, Holmes, and Harrison as backups.

  7. I say we draft all offensive linemen in the draft, get rid of Herremans, Louis, and Harrison, and let the 5 or 6 rookies battle it out.  Maybe let Holmes walk too.  Conklin, Allen, Kirkland in 1st 3 rounds then take best available.  That way, we don't have to worry about the bust factor.  Even a blind squirrel can find a nut every once in a while.  Surely, Grigs can hit on at least 2 picks out of 6, even though his record of picking solid O linemen has been bad.  Heck, his best draft choice on the o line may turn out to be a 7th rounder.  And, Thornton is getting better, but he's made of glass.  Jury is still out.

  8. I liked how Goode played and I thought this might be a productive starting oline in the future.  I think Mewhort was one of the highest rated centers coming out of high school.  What about something like this seeing as how Holmes or Harrison don't appear to have the skills to play center at a high level week in and week out.

    Castanzo   Reitz    Mewhort    Thornton    Goode

    Biggest and most physically talented

combo of personnel I could think of that are currently on roster.  thoughts?

  9. The next few games (even with Hasselbeck starting) will tell us whether or nor Pep was the problem.  We just beat the team with the number one defense.  Took the Panthers to OT.  Led NE at the half.  Yeah, we got off on the wrong foot with NY and Buffalo (2 more good defenses).  Laid an egg with New Orleans.  I can't think of a team  more battle tested than us right now.  We are hardened, sharpened, and ready to inflict damage.  My fear is getting soft again playing a soft schedule the last 7 weeks of the season.  Chud wasn't available when Pep was hired and its hard to fire a guy when the team just went to the championship.  So, Grigs hands were tied on that one.  He hasn't really drafted defense heavily in any draft with early picks (except Werner) and he hasn't been that great.  He did draft Anderson and Parry and cut Hughes and Chapman.  If its true he is making lineup decisions, he needs to stop or at least consult with the coaches and they can make decisions together.  I'd rather have a guy like Grigs who makes noise and strikes out sometimes in free agency than Polian, who just sits in the background and does nothing.

I like what the team showed against Denver and I liked what Hasselbeck showed against Houston.  He was playing at about 30% after being in the hospital for a couple days.  I'm not worried.  Just hoping our run D doesn't suffer a noticeable setback due to loss of Anderson.  I wish he would draft D in the 1st few rounds (speed rushers and good cover corner), but he'll probably go offensive line so he doesn't get crucified next year if and when Luck goes down again.  Definitely need more depth at guard and tackle.  If one of our starters goes down, we have Herremans and Louis - ugh.

  10. As long as Anderson and Davis play, I feel we will win even with a semi-weak-flu-recovering-40 yr old.  Hasselbeck had complete control of the new look offense last week with no turnovers and few QB hits.  I think I'm one of the few who think our chances are better with Hasselbeck at 50% rather than luck at 50% given the funk he has been in the 1st 3 games.  I'm more worried about the defense than the offense injury wise.  If it wouldn't have been for the fumbles, which basically gifted them a couple of scores, we would have beat the jags handily.  RB's need to hold on to the damn ball because the Texans defense is going to be trying to strip the ball on every running play after doing film study on us through the week.  Gore needs to have a big game.

  11. It's wierd how the offense looked much better (minus the 2 fumbles) with a game managing over-the-hill quarterback than it has with a gunslinging superstar.  I wish I knew if it was more Hasselbeck's calls at the line or Pep changing his offensive strategy.  I feel comfortable with Hasselbeck next week if Luck can't go.  Maybe Luck will learn something watching from the sideline.  Like making high percentage short throws to your playmakers and let them make plays instead of trying to be a hero everygame.  Was it me, or did Hasselbeck seem to not be hit as much as Luck?  And, to me, Holmes seemed to be the weak link today on the line.

  12. We need strong maulers if we are going by the mantra of running the ball and stopping the run.   Unfortunately, maulers usually don't do well in pass protection.  Oddly enough, it appears Thornton is our best run blocker, but worst in pass protection.  We don't need anymore linemen that are light in the hips and legs.  We need guys that are thick and strong that can maintain leverage going against all those short 320+ lb DT's and NT's.   I haven't looked at college football's position rankings.  Who are the best rated run blocking linemen (C, RG, RT) coming out that would work in our man scheme?

  13. Yeah, like Dilfer said, the Colts FO went after the sizzle, but forgot about the steak.  Grigs did a great job in 2012 with the sizzle, but he could have done a better job with the steak in the 2013 and 2014 drafts.  He went the risky FA route and got burnt.  Our defense wouldn't have been much worse off then it is now.  He just needs to make a concerted effort through the next 2 drafts and finally fix the OLine instead of using bandaids.  I think if he does this, people will start easing up on him even if our defense suffers in the short term.  Guys like Luck are once or twice in a lifetime players and need more than 2 high draft picks (Castanzo

and Mewhort) to be his guardians.  Harbaugh would make sure he was protected if how he ran the 49ers is any indication of how he values a team's needs in order of priority.  Maybe Pags does to, but Grigs is not letting him build the team the way he wants to.  We'll probably never know.

  14. Put me in the "I'm ok with last week's lineup" camp.  Those 5 are the most powerful linemen we have and are the 5 I want if we are trying to establish a run game to make the play action work.  Herreman's and Louis are garbage.  Jury is still out on Goode.  We are one injury away from being in big trouble and it is likely either Reitz, Holmes, or Thornton will miss time based on their injury histories.  We have more than just offensive line needs that need addressed through future drafts and FA, but we HAVE to make OL a priority the next 2 years to protect the franchise.  We need 3 more quality linemen with the talent level of Castanzo and Mewhort.  That way, we can have Holmes, Thornton, Reitz, and possibly Goode as quality backups for injury situations.  5 quality starters and 4 quality backups is a luxury I don't remember us ever having.  Throw in an Oline coach that is big on teaching technique and I'll throw cart wheels.  Oh yeah, and let Pag's pick a new OC.
