  1. After watching the Packers game, I think it comes down to chemisty and confidence with the receivers.  Rodgers was throwing the ball before the receivers made their break.  Perfect timing.  And the receivers were winning their one on one matchups.  It was very unlifting to see Dorsett's and Mocncrief's touch down catches.  Hilton's long pass catch as well.  Luck trusted them, put the ball in a good place, and they went up and got it.  Now, all we need is to mix in the short passes, and our offense will start looking elite again.

  2. Grigs had 2 good drafts (2012 and 2015) and two bad drafts (2013 and 2014).  He's 2 good drafts away from putting together a solid team.  When he has good drafts, he usually gets 4 quality players.  2012 (Luck, Fleener, Allen, Hilton). 2015 (Anderson, Parry, Geathers, Dorsett).  We have 8 positions in need of upgrading and or/depth.  Assuming we keep Castanzo and Mewhort manning the left side, we need upgrades at C, RG, and RT.  Keep Holmes and Reitz for quality depth.  Jury is still out on Goode.  That gives us 7, potentially 8, quality linemen.

I wouldn't mind getting one more stud rb like Bradshaw for depth if Gore goes down.  Not confident Varga or Robinson can carry the load if they become the featured back.  Thats four of the 8 upgrades we need.

Our pass rush from outside linebackers is non-existent except for Mathis.  Need 2 good pass rush specialists at OLB.  Newsome, Cole, and Werner have not impressed me at all.  Keep Walden for depth.  Wouldn't mind getting one or 2 more CB's that excel at man coverage so we can play man coverage in both nickle and dime packages.  Our defesne has neither pass rush or good secondary at this point.  Recipe for disaster against Brady, Rodgers, Big Ben, and Manning.

Conclusion, Grigs seems to have fixed the run game problem we had last year on offense and defense.  Now he has to round out the roster to be good at both pass and rush game.  Probably going to take 2 more drafts to become elite in both phases.  Pep and maybe oline coach need to be given their walking papers for this to happen, however.  JMHO

  3. Anderson is the exact type of 3-4 DE I wanted the Colts to draft.  He looks a little soft to me, but I have no doubt he plays with heavy hands and power.   Give him one solid offseason in the weight room and another year of adding natural man weight and he will be a mountain of a force that will demolish most OT's in the league.  My big concern is if any of our young NT's have turned the corner after a few years in the league.  If not, we'll be in for another year of watching our smallish ILB's making tackles after 5 yard gains.  Chapman and Hughes are going to be the pieces that will make or break the run D IMHO.

  4. I could totally see Grigs going RB and RT in rounds 2 and 3 then using the rest of the draft and supplemental to find a starting SS and depth at defense (secondary especially).  I thought we ran the ball pretty well last year as long as Richardson wasn't carrying the ball.  Our passing game started to spiral downward when Wayne tore his tri and all we had left at wr that was worth anything were TY and Moncrief.  We fixed that problem with Dorsett and Jonhson.  It was Boom carrying the ball the 2nd half of season (Bengals practice squad guy I think).  I imagine we can do much better with Gore, Boom, and either Coleman, Duke, or Abdullah.

All we need now is a quality RT which we may already have in Mewhort if Gosder underwhelms again..  I could see our starting line being

    Costanzo, Mewhort, Holmes, Thomas, Cherilius

We have a ton of guards right now - Mewhort, Thomas, Heenan, Herremans, Thornton.  I would rather give Mewhort a shot at RT and move Cherilius to backup.  Leaving a starting line of.

    Costanzo, Herremans, Holmes, Thomas, Mewhort.

I see no reason, if we go offense in rounds 2 and 3, why we won't finish as the number one offense in the league.  If our defense doesn't improve and we finish 11th again (not bad), our average offense/defense score will be 6.  I'm good with that.

  5. I don't know if Chuck is quite out of the woods yet with his leukemia.  I know it is in remission and he probably is still on maintenance therapy,  Males usually get around 2.5 years of maintenance therapy.  I know my then 6 year old son's ALL leukemia relapsed 3 years out from his initial diagnosis in his central nervous system when he was almost done with his mainteance therapy.  Did another year of hardcore chemo and radiation and began another year of maintenance chemo. My now 8 year old son relapsed 3 months ago in his marrow and CNS.  We arrived in Seattle from Nashville on Dec 31st for his double cord blood transplant and begin his conditioning tomorrow with a 1 week round of total body irradiation and chemo.

I only gave you the history above to note my personal experience with the cancer Pags had (in remission now) and the possibility the Colts made Chud assistant coach until Chuck is pretty much totally out of the woods at the 5 year mark which is considered the GOLD milestone for ALL leukemia.

  6. I like the players you have chosen, especially the ILB's.  They both are tall and athletic which will enable them to hang with the TE's better than the midgets we have now.  AJ and Peters will both fall,  but they both have round 1 and/or round 2 talent.  I'd want them both drafted by round 4 because I'm afraid they won't fall past rd 4.  Maybe try and get a big athletic OLB in the 2nd - 4th rounds instead of a smallish 3/4 DE.  Alot of depth at the OLB position in the draft next year.  I know Mathis will be back next year, but I would love to get a tall OLB as big or bigger than Werner that can stuff the run.  Werner, AJ, Johnson, McKinney, and someone like Dupree would be a nice young group of linebackers.  Maybe fix one level of the defense at a time since linebacker and secondary levels need a 75% overhaul.  The DL isn't great, but they are big enough to tie up multiple OLman.  We just need linebackers that outweigh the RB's by 30 - 50 lbs that can stuff them when they are just about to hit the hole.

  7. Toler and Davis have stayed relatively healthy this year, but when one of them goes down, our defense gives up big yards.  I'm beginning to wonder if the Colts should look into drafting some CB's in rounds 1 and 2 that excel in press coverage.  I think Butler and Gordy are both free agents next year.  Give Gordy one more shot to prove himself against the Browns.  When one of our safety's go down, our defense doesn't seem to drop as much.

  8. As much as I love the thought of getting another CB, OLB, ILB, or Safety,  I could totally see Grigson drafting a quality RB and WR early.  Nicks and Wayne (love Wayne's character) are simply not world beaters anymore.  There aren't any defensive backfields that could contain a 4 wideout formation of Hilton, Moncrief, Fleener, (example) Sammie Coates with RB coming out of the backfield.  Way too much speed.  Speedy wideouts seem to come cheaper than shut down corners.

I love Bradshaw and Ballard as well, but Grigs has to be losing sleep over the thought of both of them wearing blue next year with their injury history.  Possibly take a look at Duke Johnson, Karlos Williams, or Tevin Coleman in the 3rd round.  Bring back either Ballard or Bradshaw and give away Richardson to another team for a 6th or 7th rounder.  Running back stable would be Herron, Bradshaw or Ballard, and a quality rookie.

Give our offensive line another year (keep shuffling them until we find right combo).  See how they do with any running back not named Richardson before we pass final judgement.   Get a RB and WR in draft and then go all defense to fill in deficiencies in backfield and Linebacking corp.  The DL should continue to get better, but they will have to start looking for Redding's replacement.

  9. Isn't Derrell Revis an unrestriced free agent next year - lol.  Not sure if we have the money to swing that deal, but that would be a sweet corner duo.  Toler moved to nickle and Butler moved to dime.  Maybe get a free safety with great coverage skille in the draft.  We have no depth if Toler or Davis go down.  I wouldn't be opposed to using our 1st 2 picks on the secondary.

  10.      Seeing as there is one thing we do very well (passing) I would love to add to the arsenal of receivers next year (TY, Moncrief, Fleener, Allen, Wayne). very early in the draft.  Right now, everyone is trying to copy what the seahawks did last year and get a quartet of elite DB's (Pats and Broncos).  Play chess with them and overwhelm them with a counter move of 5 elite receivers.  Wayne can be taken out of a game with one good CB.  I think Moncrief and TY will both require double teams next year.  Get rid of Nicks.  Add Jalen Strong or TY Montgomery and run 5 wide with TY, Moncrief, Fleener, Wayne, and a 1st round stud in draft.  Bring Allen in for run and 3 receiver sets.

Its going to take a few drafts before we get the personnel for a good run game (if ever with this coaching staff).  We could make our already great pass game over the top great with one pick in this draft.  Spend the rest of the picks on defensive positions of need or maybe OL for upgrades which would allow us to get rid of some of our underwhelming performers currently on the roster.

    My Mock:

1st:  (WR)    Ty Montgomery     6'2"  215 lbs   or     Jalen Strong   6'4"  205 lbs They both should be there when we pick.

Too good of talents talents to pass on.  Overkill; maybe (but WOW - that would be unstoppable with Luck)

2nd: (FS)     Russell Eskridge   6'3"  207 lbs         I can't remember the last time we drafted a FS high.  Adams has been

performing admirably, but if he goes down (ouch).  Delane Howell is too much of an injury risk.

3rd (OLB)     Alvin Dupree        6'4"  267 lbs   or Marcus Golden   6'3"  260 lbs     I like their size and speed.  Can both rush and

stop the run.  Bring Newsome and Mathis in for pass happy teams and Werner and one of the

                                                     above for run heavy teams.

4th:  (SS)     Cody Prewitt          6'2"  220 lbs   or     Jeremy Cash  6'1"  210 lbs     Would give us better coverage than what we

currently  have while still giving us in the box toughness.

5th:  (CB)     Jalen Collins        6'1"    195 lbs   or  Kevin Johnson  6'2"   215 lbs  or Cam Thomas 6'1" 190 lbs.   Would love to find

a cb the equivalent of Toler to bring in as our nickel back.  Move Butler to Dime.  Gordy has never impressed me.

6th:  (OL)     Trenton Brown    6'8"  350 lbs     Bring in for depth on OL or possible starter.  Big and athletic.

6th:  (OL)      Jamon Brown     6'5"   350 lbs    More OL Depth.  Possible starter at guard.

7th:  (RB)      Whoever is the BPA at that position.

  11. Where would Grigs look for a new offensive line coach (college or the pros)?  It seems as though the Patriots staff turns normal looking guys out of smaller colleges every year into an elite unit no matter who is running the ball.  With the exception of Harrison, we've used high draft picks on our line.  No excuses there anymore.  Maybe Pagano and his offensive coaches should sit down and watch the film and try to break the Patriots code.  The announcers kept talking about angles.  They were pushing our 340 lbers out of the way like they were  chumps.  LOL - Chuck should call Bruce and ask him what he would do in this situation.

  12. Long time lurker, 1st time poster.  With all the depth in the draft at OLB/DE hybrids, why not look at drafting a couple high in the draft and possibly looking at moving one to ILB.  I always fancied us having a fast and agressive linebacking corp with an average height of 6'3" with an average weight of 260 (kind of like what the Steelers used to have) that all possess a triple threat ability  (pass rusher, run stopper, coverage skills).  Werner's size.  I know Werner doesn't have the speed and moves of Mathis, but he can stop the run better than Mathis.  I want more height and speed at ILB so we match up better against TE's.  Seems like all the top ILB prospects are 6' or shorter and 240 lbs.  LOL - I want at least 2 more inches and 15 more pounds.  I don't know a ton about defensive schemes, but would it be a huge challenge for an elite college OLB/DE hybrid to make a change to the inside.  Just trying to think outside the box with this deep draft of OLB talent.  Get better blitzes and coverage from ILB's with bigger; more athletic OLB's.   Same goes with safties to counter TE's.  6'2" 220 lb safties would be nice.  Revis is an UFA this year.  Dump Gosder and/or Jackson/Landry to make room for his salary and pair him up with Davis.  Move Toler to nickel and Butler to Dime.  Get one tall athletic safety with excellent coverage skills and good tackling ability (Prewitt, Drummond, or the kid out of Syracuse).  We also have Purifoy we could experiment with at safety.  I think we would be reaching too far to try and get a safety in the 1st round.

I don't think there will be any shut down corners that would be the equivalent of Davis left in the 1st round when we pick except maybe Peters due to character issues; thats why I mentioned Revis.  Also,  due to the age of Reggie and lack of depth after TY and Moncrief, i wouldn't be totally against drafting a stud wr in the 1st if one falls if there are no elite safties, LB's (inside or out), or CB's left when we pick.

1st round      BPA at OLB, FS, CB, ILB

2nd round     BPA at OLB, FS, CB, ILB

3rd round     BPA at OLB, FS, CB, ILB

4th though 7th - just go with BPA regardless of position with the exception of TE, DT.  I love our quality of depth on our interior DL and our TE's.
