I've read a time or two now that some pundits "think" that our first 4 picks could start for us this year.

So Rock at CB over whom? Desir, Wilson or Moore?

I think this one is pretty straightforward.

    Rock and Desir at CB.

Moore at the Nickel, where he excels and can be utilized as a blitzer.

    Wilson will be the Dime.

    So would D.K. Metcalf.

Both are talented.  I'm a little worried that Metcalf has maxed out his frame.  He's a little stiff when running routes, too.

If you compare Metcalf's last full season to Boykin's, Boykin outproduced him.

I don't know anything about Metcalf's leadership potential, but you see what happened with the locker room when you added ND guys like Farley and Nelson.

All you have to do is watch the current ND roster's reaction to Boykin's performance to understand what he meant to his team last year.

Character and leadership are huge, underrated intangibles when you're approaching locker room construction in the manner Ballard is.

I would guess the hours worked is less at the College level. Could just be he doesn't want the grind.

Perhaps.  Although in college you have to coach and travel the country recruiting, text/call high school kids 24/7, etc.

Probably a wash there.  Pressure in college, especially at a place like Iowa State, is possibly not as great.

Disruptive 3-tech in the middle, a quality safety that stays healthy plus a quality RB and WR that can make plays when counted on, plus a coach in Reich that is willing to learn from past play calling mistakes. :)

Upon thinking it through, NOT every team has first and second rounders across the board on OL, so I don't see the need for more draft capital on the OL on day 1 or 2 now that we have established we can keep Luck upright for the season.

DL and OL depth on Day 3 is what I would like but play makers for DL, WR, S, and RB is what I want on Day 1 and Day 2.

I've been banging the drum for Jerry Tillery at 3-tech.

Dude took over games this year and his body type/speed/motor are literally a perfect, glass slipper fit for this defensive scheme.

He'll be around in the mid-20s in the first round.

We saw no game plan today. If there was one it went out the window after the first play.

I hope Reich understands he can’t  be dancing with the players after one playoff win. They are young and it has been a exciting season but he has to get their attention that we haven’t won anything.

On WED I also noticed the music playing during practice and the manic dancing all over. Starting next year we have got to grow up and take it a lot more serious.

Every NFL team practices to music.  It provides juice.  It also helps to simulate noise.

There are several reasons the Colts lost today.  Dancing last Saturday and on Wednesday aren't even remotely close to being on the list.

Also, let's please not lose sight of the fact that nobody expected this team to make the playoffs, let alone win a road playoff game, in the second year (first year with a new coaching staff) of a major rebuild, playing with one of the youngest (if not the youngest) rosters in the NFL.

How does everyone feel about luring Pat McAfee back to us, only this time as a kicker? He clearly loves the Colts, and talked about playing the position in the past. We have a ton of cap space, and the locker room leadership he could bring would be huge. We could also have him do onside kicks for us as needed.

He's 100% done.  He doesn't want to come back.

  7. 1-year deal or time to sign/draft a young placekicker?

I’m inclined to bring him back, if he wants to be back.  But it’s at the point that he could literally lose “it” at any moment.

Also, although this is a somber topic, Vinny is the GOAT.

He is a pretty terrible returner.

He catches the football consistently as a punt returner.  We’ve struggled mightily with that for years prior to Chester.

The punt/kick return game is dead in the NFL.

Hilton, Inman, Pascal, Cain, Fountain, and a day 2 pick would be a viable WR core.  Hopefully we can get a big bodied WR or a burner in the draft.

Agree with everything except replace Fountain with Rogers.  He’s a solid returner and has made big plays down the stretch.

I've been tough on Luck in the past as there were things that just kept popping up that held him back.  But with Reich I think Luck is ready to be a generational player.

Yep, pretty excited to be a colts fan again.

I rarely get the chance to say I’m “amazed” by what someone has done and truly mean it.

I am amazed by what Luck has done this year.

I’m not sure how it can be considered good news if he is limited in a walkthrough. If he can’t full go in a walk through, I’m not planning on him being full go with pads let alone in a game. Hope your read on its better than mine.

Because it's a walkthrough, they can only "estimate" a player's readiness.  The fact that he was able to be estimated as a LP is a very encouraging sign.

Coutee will most likely play. He's practiced with no limitations according to the local news here in Houston.

He's coming off a very long layoff with a hamstring.  The Texans only had a walkthrough as well.

I'll be curious to see how he does once the "real" practices hit.  O'Brien seems very cautious with his outlook.

He only played defensive snaps in 10 games. In five of those ten, he played 9 or fewer snaps.

But even a rookie should know not to hit a guy late out of bounds. He basically gave the Titans three points.

Yeah, most of the mistakes I saw from Adams and Odum yesterday were the result of poor fundamentals and lack of discipline (including lack of eye discipline).

Adams just gets eaten up by any sort of misdirection.  Then again, so does our entire LB corps.  That's the one thing the Giants, and to an extent, the Ttitans, have done recently to try to take advantage of the defense's speed and aggressiveness.

Use that speed and aggressiveness to get guys out of position in a hurry.  Create cutback lanes and awkward tackling angles.  Speaking of angles, Odum takes some "Ole!" angles.

I'm just extremely happy that these minor issues are what I'm whining about this time of year, relative to the Colts.  #Blessed

He's a rookie you can only expect so much right now

I really don't consider guys that have been through 17 weeks of practice and games rookies anymore.

Not trying to sound like a jerk, but that's kind of a weak excuse at this point.

  14. Dear Frank,

Thank you for allowing me to care about the outcome of a Colts football game (from a non-draft perspective) for the first time in what feels like a long time.

    Signed,

It may well be structural and is very unlikely to have anything to do with the brachial plexus... It will come down to his status on game day and likely the presence or absence of active correlating compression on an MRI.  We have nowhere near enough information in the press to predict his status, but I'll gamble that he'll understate the severity of his symptoms and play anyway.

I'm a Notre Dame fan.  Earlier this season, standout defensive end Daelin Hayes suffered a "classic" stinger that did in fact involve the brachial plexus.  Which is why I referenced it as a possible issue when Mariota's injury was described (generally) as a stinger.

However, based on your post, I did some more digging regarding the specifics of Mariota's injury.

    From ProFootballDoc:

"Video does not indicate a classic stinger at all, as there was no neck or shoulder involvement. A stinger typically involves a nerve in the brachial plexus, not at the elbow."

"Mariota had a previous ulnar nerve issue at the elbow where he lost some feeling in his fourth and fifth fingers, which resulted in a weak grip. He missed the Titans’ Week 2 game and was not quite right for multiple weeks."

"My worry is this is a re-aggravation of the ulnar nerve issue.

In general, a nerve issues resolves in seconds or minutes. When it doesn't, it takes weeks (or sometimes months)."

"At this point, it seems likely the Titans will have to win with Gabbert unless they choose to play Mariota at less than 100 percent."

I think if the playoffs are on the line, he’ll play.

As @USAFHoosier points out below, stingers can be tricky.  The main problem is not necessarily the pain, but the lack of feeling (i.e., numbness and tingling) you *can* experience in your arm and hand.  If those are the symptoms he's experiencing late in the week, that will substantially affect his ability to throw the football.

Stingers can linger or only take a few days. Glad it’s nothing structural.

Yep.  Everyone reacts differently, depending on the severity, since it's literally a bundle of nerves (brachial plexus).  Nerves are tricky.
