Safety really isn’t our problem. We’re not getting beat over the top, we’re getting beat on screens and the short, middle field. In other words, our zone is too big. We need better coverage in the middle and that to me is more of a scheme thing than a personnel issue.

We didn't get beat deep because the Chargers were gashing us all day over the middle.

I think Hooker played pretty well, and he serves as a deep threat deterrent, but his tackling was just average yesterday, and Geathers got burned down by the goal line (got caught looking in the backfield).

Geathers' tackling was not good yesterday.  Willis got beat on ST for the punt block.

Finally, we actually played a lot more man-to-man yesterday, and I think the entire secondary looked a little lost.

I agree that the S position isn't a fatal flaw, completely lacking any play-making ability, but it was 1 of my 2 biggest concerns about this team heading into the season and after watching yesterday, we need a major talent upgrade at the position outside of Hooker, and we could upgrade the talent behind him, too.

  2. Have to echo what @Superman said above.

Probably Leonard's worst game as a pro.  There were many occasions where he was not assignment-sound, took some bad angles, got stuck on blocks, and his tackling was mediocre.  I would love to be a fly on the wall during the film session.

It looked like Leonard was pressing to make splash plays, instead of just doing his job and letting the splash plays come to him.

Overall, the defense looked like it was filled with a bunch of guys that didn't do much tackling during training camp or the preseason.  And it showed.

Sheard is a beast at setting the edge.  Get healthy soon, boss.

Normal return for broken collarbone is 12 weeks. Might miss the rest of the season

Notre Dame's star TE, Cole Kmet, broke his collarbone around August 8th.  He had surgery (several screws installed to set the fracture and speed up the healing), and he has already returned to practice.

Depending on the severity, it can be anywhere from 4-10 weeks, as I mentioned above (before seeing your post).

They were subbing receivers and TEs in and out like crazy all game. It felt like they still aren't sure what their favorite packages are, and it probably affected the offense's ability to get into a rhythm.

So if Funchess is out for a while, I think there are plenty of options to help make up for that loss. Cain, Campbell, Ebron, Hines outside, etc. Funchess made some big plays so it's not like he won't be missed, but this team doesn't lack for pass catchers.

I agree, but man did he look physical.  Guy has a big catch radius, too.  I remember smiling, thinking, "We finally have the WR that makes 50/50 balls look easy."

If it is a collarbone, it could be anywhere from 4-10 weeks, depending on whether the team can surgically secure the fracture with screws to help speed up the healing process.  With surgery, after about 2-3 weeks, he could get a scan to see if the fracture has healed and start to return to practice in a non-contact capacity.

I don't think that OL regression is "possible".  I think it is already here.  We couldn't run block straight up to save our lives this preseason.  Not once.  Not at all.  I'm very concerned that our OL won't be able to do it during the regular season either.  And if Castonzo goes down and we have to go with Clark?  God help us.

This post is not "on brand" with your avatar ("Don't panic") . . .

Just teasing you.  That was too good to pass up.  In all seriousness, I do not believe the preseason will be a strong predictor of this year's offensive line performance.

Vanilla play-calling, vanilla protection(s), minimal game-planning (something that was a huge emphasis for the offensive line and offense, in general last year), and minimal reps with all the starters together = the inconsistent play we saw in the preseason.

Give me a 2-4 game contract with a vet QB. I'd prefer old and accomplished, to old and mediocre or young and ?... We just need a bridge for a few weeks, not a project or someone who won't be a good mentor to Kelly.

Also, give me OL Alex Bars who just got cut from the Bears. Was great before he got injured and would have been drafted higher had he played the entire season at ND. Had great coaching, and just needs some time.

I'm good with TE, WR, DB, and LB.

I doubt there's any good DL that get waived.

I'm with you on Bars.  I guess the Bears weren't sure if he could be an OT.

He's a fantastic guard, and we need depth at that position.  The fact that he can kick out to OT in a pinch is just icing on the cake.
