  1. He's oftentimes been a step late this year.  I don't know if it's recognition (rusty from a "mental reps" standpoint) or that he's not 100% physically "there" yet.  Perhaps a bit of both.

Regardless, I'm going to cut the kid plenty of slack as he continues to regain his speed, strength, flexibility, and agility.  He still hasn't played a full season, either.

That PBU he had in Philly gave me a glimmer of hope that's he back on track.

You would be surprised how long a concussion can hang around.

This.  As someone that has had several concussions, including 2 where I lost consciousness completely, you are 100% on the mark.

Everyone's body (and brain) reacts differently to concussions.

What Keefer is telling you is that there is another issue outside of the concussion.

That's coming across as nothing more than pure speculation from Keefer.

I reserve the right to be wrong, but concussions can be nasty, nasty business.

His lack of effort is my biggest concern with him.   I recall Detroit fans warning us.   I thought a change of scenery would make the difference.   He's got the size and speed, but he doesn't use it.   He doesn't fight the defender for the ball.   He doesn't put those long arms up.   If the pass isn't to him, he just stops and watches the play.

I would tend to agree with those observations, with one minor caveat.  I think Ebron puts out on some plays, but not on the regular basis we need him to.

Ebron is lacking that consistent effort and focus.  I think he's made some big plays, and I won't take those away from him.  But this team needs that big-play effort consistently, play-in, play-out.

He subs out after contact quite frequently, too.

We were warned from his play in Detroit and they were so happy to get rid of him

He was proving them wrong in limited snaps earlier in the season.  He's still exceeding my expectations but there are some flags to pay attention now, for sure.  The spotlight is on him in Jack's absence.

I also wonder if Doyle is going to be back this year with that hip

Same.  I think we all realize what a player Doyle is now.  His blocking was really starting to improve.  Runs great routes.

I kind of thought Walker outplayed Brissett in the pre-season.  I'm no QB expert, but that's how I saw it.  I realize Brissett is a known commodity due to last year, and I'm all for him being on the team.  But it's a shame we couldn't keep Walker on the PS just in case.

Keep in mind that Walker often played against guys that are either on NFL practice squads or on the street.

This makes the most sense when you look at the skills of all backs.  Or could you see a two back set with him as a blocker option / FB ?

I think people are vastly underestimating Turbin and have a bit of amnesia regarding how effective Turbin was running, catching, and pass protecting before his injury last year.

He runs a 4.44 40 and averaged over 6 YPC prior to getting hurt last year.  And Turbin did that behind an abysmal offensive line.

I'm personally very excited to see what Turbin will be able to do with a healthy Kelly, Nelson, and hopefully, AC.

  6. I'm with @Superman - I would much rather roll with what we have and wait until Turbin gets back so that we can have some depth at the safety position.  Farley is reliable and both Geathers and Hooker have been banged up before.

Plus, Farley is vital in the Dime.  You can bring him in and slide Geathers down to a LB spot and have quite a few outstanding coverage athletes on the field.

  7. Nailed it regarding the #1 thing I'm looking for with this team:

Growth over the course of the season.

    1. That will answer a lot of questions about the young talent.

    2. That will answer a lot of questions about this new staff and their ability to develop young talent.

    3. That will answer a lot of questions about whether Ballard and his staff can identify talented players and coaches.

    4. That will answer a lot of questions re: #12 and his comeback.

If I see growth - positive, sustained growth, with this team, I'll be satisfied.

Walker first and foremost is the projected starter since before the preseason... Also he was touted for his athletic ability not a "hulking slow" LB.  Some I'm not sure where that comes from.

Stewart has been doing decent lately and while yes he may be on the bubble I wouldn't call it a whiff like Banner.  He still has a solid chance to be a good depth player for us.

Both Adams and Franklin are filling out the non-existant LB Depth that we didn't have last year.  Those players are definitely important in both special teams and in case injuries arise.

Apologies didn't mean to offend with the word "evaluations" I just didn't know how else to label.  Indicators is a good word.

What did you not make sense on? I can't help explain without you telling me what didn't complete thought.

No offense taken.  It was the “mind-numbing evaluations” description that confused me.  They were one-word takes on the last 2 years of draft picks.

Walker is on the slow side.  Teams had concerns about how much muscle he packed onto his frame his final year in school and the subsequent consequences it had on his flexibility and agility.

There have also always been questions about his coverage skills.  In the 3-4, you can survive with a thicker, less mobile “phone booth” LB like Walker but, he, IMHO, is not a good fit in the speed-obsessed 4-3.

What group is Stewart getting reps with?  I hadn’t seen his name much this preseason.  He only got about 33 snaps last night.

And Franklin?  Maybe a dozen or so.  Plus a handful on ST.

So now that I’ve clarified my “one takes,” on the mostly marginal players (some may be PS guys) you pointed out, excluding Walker (not marginal), what other observations did you find problematic?

Hmmm despite the original topic these player evaluations are mind numbing.

Out of 4 2nd round picks we have one starter?  That's worrying.

Also Braden is a potential starter because of how much trash is around him as far as depth is concerned.

    Grover Stewart is a whiff?

Anthony Walker is an ill fit? He transitioned at NW from Will to Mike no?

Turay is talented but he's raw and has some serious flaws that may or may not he worked out.  That doesn't sound like a 2nd round pick.

Lewis was an unnecessary pick and despite being injured brought little to no value to the team due to similar style players being drafted the year before.  Give those a chance to grow...

Not sure how Hines is talented as a RB he has no vision and for all that speed can't wiggle past a defender in space (see the few screen plays he got in the Seattle game where he just ran into a guy 40 pounds bigger than him)

Adams and Franklin are not camp bodies... What?

All in all my issue with Ballard is that he wastes high draft picks on unnecessary risks but finds gems in the late rounds.  Gems are nice but it's better to capitalize on your initial draft stock than hope you get 5th round to undrafted gems every year. Sounds a lot like Polian in the end.

Tell me what Anthony Walker, Grover Stewart, Adams, and Franklin are doing right now.  With specificity.

Walker is an ill fit.  He’s a hulking, slow LB that was suited to play in the 3-4.

And anyone with common sense can see that my one liners were not “evaluations” - but indicators that most of the picks have been contributors (some significant) while others still have the chance to be.

I couldn’t make any sense of your reply whatsoever.

I want more Wilkins with the first team. Let him run with the big dogs. Michael is a career backup. Why do they insist on giving him the lions’ share of the work?

Because it's the preseason (not trying to be snarky).

  12. Single gap defense where each defender is responsible for his gap (contingent upon personnel, etc.).  A lot of the run-stopping responsibilities ultimately fall upon the WLB, a critical position in this defense.

The ends are definitely pass rushers, but when it comes to the running game, they're going to play assignment football.
