I too quickly did a mock as soon as the combine ended and now FA has shaken things up again. This mock is based on what has happened in FS and what I think will happen.

    Draft:

Round 1: Hassan Reddick, ILB Temple: Sidney Jones was who I had us taking until the recent injury. Given how we've fixed OLB short term this is the next best pick. Reddick will be a defensive chess piece that doesn't have to come off the field and is more versatile than any other LB in this class. All the tools are there so this is a perfect spot to get him.

Round 2: Quincy Wilson, CB Florida: As I thought, it doesn't look like we're making any moves at CB in FA. Butler probably isn't getting resigned and Robinson was cut. The need for CB is great. Wilson is falling out of first round mocks and probably rightfully so. He's a better day 2 value and he probably has to play press CB at the next level with a 4.5 40. It'll work for us. Immediate starter at CB 2. (You can also put another CB who might be here in this slot)

Round 3: Marcus Williams, FS Utah: You absolutely cannot go into 2017 with Green as the top safety. So Ballard drafts a top guy to play center fielder. Williams has elite ball skills but will get overlooked by all the safeties who ran sub-4.5 40s. He's physical in both the run and pass game and can be a future leader.

Round 4: Cameron Sutton, CB Tenn.: An overlooked prospect who was often injured during his collegiate career. He's 5'11" with short arms so I'm predicting he gets kicked inside to nickel. Butler won't be back so he may have to play early. But like Butler he's flexible and can do a lot of things for you

Round 4: Wayne Gallman, RB Clemson: A jack of all trades, master of none type of player. Gallman is a guy that you get creative with and give 15-20 touches to. He also had underrated power in his game and can run between the tackles. (You can put any RB you think will be available here)

Round 4: Jarron Jones, DL Norte Dame: Had him in my last draft. Doesn't look like we're getting Poe and no one knows what we're doing with Parry. Jones can play 5-tech and possibly NT. 6'6" is big for a NT but he can probably two-gap. Shows enough power to 1-gap as well though as they had to triple team him against Miami.

Round 5: Elijah Lee, ILB Kansas State: A combine snub who has terrific size at 6'3" 220. Has a frame to handle another 10-20 pounds if you want. Tackling form needs work and he's only just scratched the surface of his potential in coverage. He brings immediate competition to a weak LB group and can play STs while he grows.

No pass rushers? Sheard and Simon are both relatively young and will buy the Colts 2-3 years to find future studs. Mingo could break out, although it's a long shot. But there's no sense of reaching for a pass rusher. Garrett and Thomas will be gone before our picks. Taco isn't a scheme fit and Barnett might go before us. Tak and Harris aren't necessarily top 15 players. It's more important to improve our LB core and secondary because there are bigger holes there. I don't see Ballard making any more moves so that's where his focus will be in the draft probably. The safety and CB class is deep and Reddick is a can't miss player.

Ballard is going young and our first 5 picks are probably all starters. Remember guys, You don't have to solve all the problems in 1 draft. We can get a true NT next year and start seeing what we need to have dominant trench players.

Actually, he is a "can miss player". :)

"Missed 15 tackles on only 76 attempts in 2016 and missed 28 on 150 attempts over last three seasons".

Kevin Minter appears to be above average in coverage, but very hit and miss. I wasnt able to find his qb rating against him but lots of PFF grades to go off of. He had 5 games where he graded out very good, and 4 games where he graded poorly. Overall on the season PFF ranked him the 25th LB with an overall grade of 81, mainly due to his good grades in coverage. My main worry with Minter would be that his tackling appears to be suspect, with 20 missed tackles in 2016.

Zach brown is also good in coverage, giving up a qb rating or 61 in 2015, good for 3rd among LBs, and PFF ranked him as a top 10 breakout player in 2016, giving him the top defensive grade for the bills front 7, at 84.1 due to his coverage skills and a marked improvement over his run stuffing ability.  He saw a decline in his grades over the last half of this season though, with only 2 above average grades in his last 8 games. Not sure what to attribute that to, maybe he was dinged up a bit or maybe he just stopped trying, but it raises questions that need to be answered.

Overall both players are good in coverage and would be interesting additions, but both have a few question marks that would have to be looked into. At the right price they could be great pickups though. I like brown over minter personaly simply because our team has enough issues with tackling and brown showed a high tackle percentage over the last few years.

    Hope that info helps!!

    Thanks a lot!

Alright so it turns out that the Colts advanced coverage stats are more elusive than I would have thought. I will continue looking later today but I thought I would come in with some other information for comparison that gives a little of perspective in the meantime

Keuchly has been sitting around a 50 passer rating his way over the last few years which is the best mark in the NFL for LBs. His salary for 2017 is currently at 12.7M, which is around the price tag that Hightower is speculated to command.

QBs have an 87.3 Passer rating when throwing against Gerald Hodges of SF, who also graded as the 13th Run defender in the NFL as well as the 10th best pass rusher for MLBs. He will definitely come cheaper than 12M/yr, with his market value being speculated at 4-6M/ Yr. That being said he put up a QB rating of 114.3 the year before, so the question arises as to whether this was a statistical anomaly or is it simply him coming into his stride. I would guess that it is the latter, as he has been improving over the last few years, Giving Qb ratings of 125.5, then 114.3 and then 87.3 in the last 3 years.

I am not implying that Hightower is a bad player, because that would be a lie. He is a great run defender and below average pass defender that makes up for it by having some pass rush ability. I like him, I am just not sure I like him enough to pay him like he is a Keuchly level player. If his price tag went down to like 7-9M/ Yr I would be all for it.

What about Zach Brown and Kevin Minter? Are they good in coverage?

  4. Ridgeway and McGill are as good as Jones... and are paid less. Even 2 mil. is too much for depth player. Cut Jones (post June 1 desig.) and Langford, save 10 mil. (+5 mil. for Jackson, +2 for McAfee), sign Calais Campbell and Brandon Williams (BAL). Starters: Anderson, Williams, Campbell. Depth: McGill, Parry, Ridgeway, Kerr. + rookie ILB, rookie P. Same money. Better players.

  5. How is it possible?

    PFF week 1.

    Ryan Kelly 79.3.

    Anthony Castonzo 78.0.

    Denzelle Good 75.6.

I remember grigson using his higher round draft picks on skill positions. Other than a project first rounder in Werner didn't make sense then or now.

What does my short memory have to do with me being gm who would have used his first 3 picks in the first 2 drafts (beyond luck) for oline? Not a 3rd and a 4th round. You just proved my point by saying our GM takes our oline as seriously as a 3rd and 4th rounder coming into the colts organization with a MAJOR oline problem as it was to begin with. He has literally done nothing to help this oline beyond finding quick fixes. And mediocre over the hill players with injury histories.

This is my problem with our GM and it has always been my problem with him. His best draft so far was his current one with Kelly. Should have happened from the get go. Arguing against this is pure lunacy.

we have an * GM on our hands who has put our coaching staff, and our players, in a position to fail. Therefor you see people getting mad about pagano making certain calls.

if you went trenches to begin with, you would see a lot of these mistakes cleaned up. Not because they realize the mistake, but because they have the personnel to control TIME OF POSSESION.

Evan Mathis was 79th pick. Jahri Evans  was 108th pick. Larry Warford was 65th pick. Gabe Jackson was 81th pick. Kelechi Osemele was 60th pick. There are a lot of good C and G in rounds 2-4. And a lot of 1st round C and G are overrated: Jonathan Cooper, Chance Warmack, Danny Watkins.

Should have drafted oline after Andrew luck and also the next draft done the same. Then dline. The games are won in the trenches as you can see from that strip sack at the end. But I guess that's why I'm no GM. I want to win.

Short memory. Grigson signed Donald Thomas (OG) and Gosder Cherilus (OT), spent 3rd round pick on Hugh Thornton (OG) and 4th round pick on Khaled Holmes (C) in 2013. Basically Grigson assembled full OL in 2013. Castonzo-Thomas-Holmes-Thornton-Cherilus. Sad, they were always injured.

    Mcnary-38.8

Morrison-68.4.....His 72.3 run grade bumped his overall grade up and 60.0 pass rush grade. He only had 11 snaps.

I believe Grigson and Pagano look to him to be Jacksons replacement in the next year maybe two at the most. Jacksons dead cap hit(what it would cost next year to cut him) next year is just $250,000.00 compared to $5,750,000 cap hit if he is on the roster next year

    Thanks.
