Nevermind the entire season you saw him playing on the edges.   It's not that big of a deal and Ballard has said the same thing.

First, not entire season, just a half. Second, as a stand rusher, 3-4 OLB. Colts want to keep him as a Von Miller-role player? Fine. As a 5-tech, hand-in-the-dirt 4-3 DE? Not sure. He can be good player. He can play 4-3 DE in college. But now Colts have 6 good (or just drafted high) 4-3 DEs and only Simon appears to be undersized and has zero dead money in his contract.

Who cares?  It's all based on how tall he is?  Nevermind the million times the coaching staff keeps telling you he's the starter and that he Fits.   The exact words ballard used was he fits.   What else do you need?

To see him fits in September. :) Not sure he can play 4-3 DE. 6-1 means shorter arms and lighter frame. Not good for 4-3 DE engaging with OT.

They ain't cutting John Simon.  Get that out of your head

    Not sure. Colts' DEs:

    Autry, 6-5, 270, 6,5M dead money, 500K save.

    Sheard, 6-3, 265, 3,25M dead money, 4,25M save.

    Basham, 6-4, 266, 3rd round 2017 draft, 209K dead money, 590K save.

    Lewis, 6-3, 269, 2nd round 2018 draft.

    Turay, 6-5, 253, 2nd round 2018 draft.

Overthecap doesn't have numbers for Turay and Lewis, but Wilson (2nd round 2017) has 1,3M dead money, 0 save.

So Colts' 4-3 DEs are from 6-3 to 6-5, from 253 to 270. Everyone has dead money in his contract. But...

    Simon, 6-1, 250, 0 dead money, 3,28M save.

  4. What's the point to compare guard's position value in 1980' and in 2010'? Since more&more college guards play spread from 2-point stance, it's harder to draft good guards. So interior OL's are moving up draft boards. 2 C's were drafted ahead of first WR off the board!

  5. Looks like Nelson and Smith are 1st and 3rd graded OG:

PFF likes Turay and Lewis also:

  6. Colts has to draft 2 OLs in Days 1&2. 2 OGs or OG&OT depends on how draft will go on. So the Colts have to have somebody at OG and OT to start. If the Colts will draft 2 OGs, Slauson to backup at OG, Haeg/Good to start at OT. If the Colts will draft OG&OT, Slauson to start at OG, Haeg/Good to backup at OT (or challenge Slauson for OG spot).

  7. Ballard's plan.

    2017.

Step 1. Look at current coaches, players.

Step 2. Sigh your own players. Versatility on both sides of the ball. Foundation, not icing on cake.

    Step 3. Look Luck's healing.

    2018.

Step 1. If old coaches are not any good, sign your own new coaches.

Step 2. Closer look at players signed in 2017 with coaches signed in 2018.

Step 3. Sign more players for new schemes. Versatility on both sides of the ball. Foundation, not icing on cake.

3.1. Do not sign one year wonders: you can't count on them to produce long term (Melvin, Robinson).

3.2. Do not sign aged veterans (only stop gap): their wheels will fall off before another players get experience (Gore, Derrick Johnson).

3.3. Do not sign names: a lot of players known for highlights and from the past, not for all body of work (Trumaine Johnson, Darrell Revis).

3.4. Do not sign often injured players; you can't count on them to produce long term.

3.5. Do not sign players exelled in other schemes (Davis, Brown).

3.6. Wait for players, who will be cut after first wave start of free agency.

3.7. Wait for players, who will be cut after draft.

Step 4. If there are no good players to sign, DO NOT sign average ones just to fill the spots. You better resign+frontload current players, including young ones like Anderson, Geathers, and roll over to make future cap space even bigger.

Step 5. When your players are young, fit the schemes, signed for frontloaded contracts, when your coaches become comfortable at their jobs and have full season to elevate current player, future FA and drafft prospects... go FA full throttle!

  8. Ballard wrote a note "Protect Luck". Not "Protect QB" or "Protect Brissett". Brissett was brought to be punished in entertaining way. Tolzien was to bad to watch him getting killed. Looks like that was a plan from the very beginning: entertaining without winning, get high pick in draft, loaded with QBs, spend big in FA next season.

BTW, Luck did not take a single sack this season, so Ballard's plan is working.

  9. Acc. to PFF.

    NT: Woods (82.2), Stewart (46.5).

    DE: Anderson (79.7), Hunt (75.4).

    DT: Hankins (83.4), Ridgeway (49.6).

    SLB: Simon (77.8), Mingo (70.0).

    RushLB: Sheard (82.9), Basham (50.4).

    Mike: Morrison (36.3).

    Will: Bostic (38.7), George (72.5).

    SS: Farley (72.6), Green (45.9).

    FS: Hooker (77.3), Butler (47.1).

    LCB: Melvin (86.4), Wilson (48.8), Milton (40.8).

    RCB: Davis (47.2), Desir (45.1), Hairston (56.8), Moore (38.7).

So you think he wouldnt have had a chance to have a bounce back year had he not been arrested?

If not, why havent we cut countless other players who only have 1 bad year?

You yourself said it was because he was bad AND got arrested. So again, do you expect Swoope to be arrested? Because chances are it will take both him being bad and being arrested for him to get cut. At worst we let him walk next year and replace him then. Lots of good free agent options for a 2nd TE next year.

It's not about release. It's about production. I don't believe in his production.

You know that Newsome was cut due to an off field incident, and not due to his play, right??

Or are you implying that we cant trust Swoope because he may secretly be a criminal??

He was cut after that, not because of that. He wasn't even punished by comissioner, so why he was cut? Why he is not NFL player right now? Because he was bad. He was bad AND was arrested. Bad combo for a player. 10 solo tackles, 1 sack in 2015. Just like Werner. Do you like PFF? They grade him (after 2015) at 49.4.

Andy Studebaker 60.0, Bjoern Werner 57.7.

So take Feeney in the 2nd fine. Why tf would we take OJ Howard round 1 when we just re signed Jack Doyle? If we go offense round 2 then we have to go D round 3. Were 1 player away on offense, I actually really like Joe Haeg was arguably our 2nd best O-linemen last year next to Ryan Kelly. LeRaven Clark only played 3 games put also only gave up 1 sack and looked very nimble and athletic. I'm fine with taking an O-lineman, I'm not fine taking a TE and RB before we address our D.

Once promising 2014 Draft 5th rounder Jonathan Newsome (6,5 sacks in 2015) was cut after disappointing 2015 season and now is a Roughrider. Are you sure Swoope is not second Newsome? Colts have just ONE proven TE, and he is not a gamechanger, just sure-handed check-down option. Opponents' LBs are glad we don't have something better at TE.

  13. Grigson understand importance of having quality depth, but he formed that depth with washed up vets. Ballard also is trying to form rotational/depth core before signing big names, but this core is much younger and cheaper. Hunt will replace Langford, Sheard will replace Cole, Simon will replace Walden. Either younger/cheaper or better. Next offseason will be much more interesting.

Our offense is functional, we are top 10. Imagine anyone who ever played football getting hurt, it could happen to anyone. Doesn't justify leaving our D without a 1st round talent for ANOTHER year. How does 2-3 early defensive picks make our D full of rookies? That's how you build a defense, by actually drafting defense!! Rather have a bunch of rookies then the guys who led our D to the 30th best in the league last year.

Top 10? Splendid! And 156 sacks for Andrew for 4,5 years, and 41 sacks in 2016 alone... This is the price of Foster, Baker, Lawson and so on. This is the price of top 10 offense. Everyone bashed Grigson for not protecting Luck, and now everyone looking to make formidable defense in 1 offseason and draft! Jaguars signed Campbell, Church, Bouye. Titans signed Klug, Cyprien, Ryan, Williams. So... let's draft defense and let Good and Haeg man right side! Howard is a great run blocker and receiver, Feeney is a great zone scheme pass protector. Colts have to protect Luck. This time for real. It's not about being top 1 offense, it's about Luck security.
