  1. Like it a lot. It's not like 13-2 team, first in conf, was fighting for home field for playoff over 13-3 second team. It was young 1-2 team playing 0-3 divisional opponent. These rookies has to earn respect, support and love of their fans. They have to believe in themselves. And they can't do it by punting and going to locker room. Glad they tried.

I completely disagree that they are pretty accurate.  PFF has no idea of the lineman's responsibility.  When you hear a QB call out a number ( a lot of times it will be something like "55 is Mike") that changes the blocking assignments.  How does it change it?  I have no idea and neither does PFF.  A good example is, let's say a guard stays in his box and blocks the DT coming into his area and let's say the tackle comes down and doubles the DT but the DE comes in and blows up the play in the backfield.  PFF counts that as a win for the guard and a loss for the tackle.  But what if the tackle was supposed to crash down and get the DT and the guard was supposed to slide out at get the DE?

Not sure, but it could be done in two ways.

First: just admit there is some kind of energy conversion efficiency. You don't stop using car because your engine has ece about 40%, right? So they can go wrong and still be a best way to grade.

Second: do not grade intention (blocking assignments), grade execution and outcome. Just like in figure skating. If athlete has made 3 points jump instead of 4 points jump he wouldn't be penalized, he would get only 3 points.

IMO PFF lineman grades are about as accurate and tracking 7 on 7 QB completion percentage in training camp... it's not totally worthless but doesn't offer anything of real value.

They are pretty accurate, but sometimes misleading: reader has to know whom lineman was playing. PFF doesn't increase score because of strong opponent, nor it decrease because of weak one. At the end of a season, when all games are played and all opponents, bad or great, were met, PFF is at it's best.

I didn’t need you to fansplain this to me. What I was implying is that considering how well Nelson has played against elite competition thus far, he should be rated much higher.

Thanks for new word to my vocabulary. Fansplain...

"When a fan tries to explain something to a pro athlete, coach, GM or entertainer about the pro's craft. Takeoff of mansplain."

Sorry, Mr. Pro, last time I checked, PFF doesn't count rating of opponent into consideration. It's either win or loss.

What’s really laughable is that Quenton Nelson isn’t on this list.

Nelson was playing against Fletcher Cox (PFF 92.4, #1 DI), Brandon Graham (PFF 83.6, #7 ED), Chris Long (PFF 82.0, #10 ED), Geno Atkins (PFF 89.6, #7 DI), Ryan Glasgow (PFF 84.1, #13 DI), Carlos Dunlap (PFF 80.9, #12 ED), Matt Ioannidis (PFF 82.4, #15 DI)...

+Ryan Kerrigan, Jonathan Allen, Derek Barnett, Carl Lawson, Sam Hubbard! BTW, after CIN-IND game Atkins was 69.0 or something like that.

Blythe was facing Cardinals (best DI - Rodney Gunter, 64.8, #65, best ED - Benson Mayowa, 74.2, #23), Chargers (best DI - Darius Philon, 78.6, #21, best ED - Melvin Ingram, 65.3, #51), Raiders (best DI - Clinton McDonald, 74.7, #31, best ED - Frostee Rucker, 73.7, #24).

    Total defense (nfl.com): Redskins #2, Eagles #9, Bengals #26... Raiders #20, Chargers #24, Cardinals #25.

It's not like Austin was playing agaist his own DL.

I had very low expectations for Luck.    His arm has looked WORSE each week.

It look good against Cincy.....    less good against Washington,  and embarrassingly weak against Philly.      That's not a good trend.      I'm not concerned that he doesn't look like 2014 Andrew Luck.      I'm concerned that he looks worse every week.    And this week was terrible.

Week 1. Dome (roof closed), 59 F (outside).

    Week 2. Outdoor (cloudy), 71 F, wind 5 mph.

    Week 3. Outdoor (rain), 61 F, wind 5 mph.

It was supposed to be worse each week.

I doubt Mosley gets away from the Ravens, but he would be a nice price to add to the Colts LB core provided he’d be as good in a 4-3 base.

Mosley is one of a few players I want Ballard to spend on. Sure, Ravens have money to resign him. But in that Flacco-Jackson situation would Mosley like to resign with Ravens?

  8. The way Sheard and Hunt are playing Simon would be just a backup. So would Basham. So Ballard has kept cheaper one, not better one (Colts has Turay as a backup as well). BTW, Simon is just good, not great at stoping the run of rushing a passer. It's not a huge loss for Colts... and any other team, because Simon still a free agent (some people thought Simon would be signed September 2).

  9. All that "impact player in 1st round", "OG is not impact player" thing is overrated. Impact CB? Opposing QBs will throw at other CB. Impact ILB? Welcome RPO. Impact rusher? Hello run game (counters, traps, reverses). Impact WR? Donald, Atkins, Campbell will broke block faster than that WR get open.

Reich wants his QB to pass a lot of short passes, passes for middle part of the field. So having good/great interior OL is critical.

I feel just the opposite.   Their benefit is not as noticeable because relevant stats are not reported much.   But improving pass protection and improving the running game is huge.   Having Nelson as an anchor for years to come is great.

I bet Luck disagrees that it is not crucial.

Watching the game right now. Nelson's awareness for stunts are just amazing. Atkins' sack wasn't Nelson's fault: there was a stunt by #58, Nelson left double block on Atkins to took that stunt and Haeg can't keep Atkins away from Andrew. At 26 dropbacks there were only 2 hurries and 4 knock downs (late hits)! Colts OL! Even without Castonzo!

they dont really have to be complete to get snaps there though

i could see simon playing DE on passing downs and maybe off the field or playing linebacker on running downs

Situational pass rusher for 3,3 mil? For team in rebuild mode? Too much money. And 2 sacks in preseason game is not something to be happy about. Just like Rayford.

  12. 4 hours ago, krunk said:

But isn't Simon too small to be a 4-3 DE? LOL!

Caesar Rayford was a star of preseason, also got multiple sacks: 1 vs. Bills, 2 vs. Giants, 2 vs. Browns. Was traded right after preseason for late round pick. And ability to get sacks is not only one needed for complete 4-3 DE. So, yeah, LOL.

My surprise starter is Simon at SAM because he's better than Morrison and he can still be used as a situational pass rusher.

Thus cutting ties with Morrison and keeping Adams and Franklin on the roster for depth and special teams.

Kills multiple birds with one stone!

Agreed. Simon fits SAM as good, as downed 4-3 DE. If the Colts decide Simon's better play at SAM worth 3,3M, they will keep him there for sure.

Hunt wasn't an UT for the Bengals, they kept playing him at DE in their 4-3 behind Dunlap and Johnson.

First, not DE only. Second, don't you think they have some reasons to play him at DE? Maybe at full time UT he was even worse? Or they have better option at UT in Atkins

  15. 1 minute ago, BleedBlu8792 said:

I don't think the Colts are worried about 3.3M in savings when they are still 52M under the cap (according to OverTheCap - could be wrong, but I think they are pretty close). That's * in the wind to them. Lewis, Turray, and Basham aren't ready to start at DE opposite Sheard yet. Simon has already proved himself for the time being, and no, no one is calling him a savior, but you still need leadership and experience, especially with a young team like this.

Autry ready. And Autry is 27, just like Simon. Maybe, let him show leadership and experience?

With questions around Luck, Hooker, Geathers health, I can't believe the Colts will keep even 9 DL. Woods, Ridgeway, Johnson at DT; Autry, Lewis at DE/DT; Sheard, Basham, Turay at DE. Maybe Tomasi as a twiner.

  16. Just now, BleedBlu8792 said:

I'm not sure why you think we are only going to keep 8, or in your case if we cut Simon, 7 DL? You're also forgetting Hunt, who I think might be a surprise at the UT role, and Grover Stewart. The Colts will likely carry 10 DL. Tomasi Laulile could open some eyes too.

So 15 spots max for LBs, CBs, Ss? Hooker injured, Geathers was badly injured... Only 46 active on game day... Should DL play ST or not... Of course, they can, but would they?

Hunt didn't surprise anyone at UT in Bengals 4-3, if I remember correctly.

  17. BTW, pretty much everyone of you in other threads agreed, that Colts don't have to sign free agents as of now, because there are to many holes in roster to fill and that free agents can't make Colts as a whole better. But now you refuse "to cut" undersized 4-3 DE in his last year with the Colts, when the Colts have other options to explore/to prove! More, that move will save the Colts 3,3M to roll over and spend next year. You are talking about Simon like he is outstanding pass rusher at his 6-1, and like he is the only missing part of Colts Super Bowl run...

  18. So discussion started from "ain't cutting" transformed into "ain't fitting". Ok.

But when Ballard said Simon fits at 4-3 DE, he didn't say Simon is good at 4-3 DE, right? Ballard didn't say nobody else fits, or Simon fits better or are better at 4-3 DE. He said just that: Simon fits at 4-3 DE. That's all. He will play there and Colts will look at him and other guys.

Sure, I don't know what they are going to keep. But nor do you to say "They ain't cutting John Simon. Get that out of your head".

Compare Simon to Mathis or Freeney is just laughable. The later were superior pass rushers Simon never would be. Simon's sack number in his best season equal to Mathis' or Freneey's worst. So 6-1 Freeney and 6-0 Mathis have been kept for ability, Simon doesn't even posses.

For me, Ballard invested to much in other guys (through draft and free agency) to keep Simon.

As for "DL as a whole"... Sure, let's keep 6 DE, 2 true DT (Woods, Ridgeway, I guess?), lose one DT to injury and start to cry "They are running in the middle!" DT are not supposed to be fresh?

  19. 15 minutes ago, TomDiggs said:

    Agreed 100%

Dwight Freeney is my all-time favorite player and he was 6'1"

    Robert Mathis was "only" 6'2"

Not saying Simon is as quick or fast as them. Just that if he fits the scheme and the coaches like what they see out of him, I don't care if he is 6'1" or 6'5".

Freeney was 268. Frankly speaking, Freeney and Mathis didn't have anybody to challenge them. And Simon has.

BTW, the way Freeney and Mathis played the run made fans mad, if I remember correctly... ;)

  20. My English is so bad? Sorry. Colts will not keep 6 DEs on roster. No way. 5 at best, and at least 1 of them has to play inside on passing downs. 2 DEs - our rookies (Lewis, Turay) will not be cut. They have to make something really stupid to force Colts to cut 2nd rounder. BTW, Lewis has played inside for Ohio State. One more DE - Basham. 4-3 DE from Ohio forced to play 3-4 OLB in pros. Can Ballard cut him? You decide. So we have only 2 spots left. Autry has 5 sacks in 2017, graded 78,6 by PFF, is 6-5, 270 and can play inside. Sheard had 5,5 sacks in 2017, graded 91,3 by PFF, is 6-3, 265 and may play inside. Simon had 3 sacks in 2017, graded 75,2 by PFF, is 6-1, 250 and CAN'T play inside. Dead money: Autry - 6,5M, Sheard - 3,25M, Simon - 0. So Simon is perfect fit to be cut. Will he? I don't know.
