  1. There's nothing wrong with signing best FA available at a position of need for the average team. But when you have 4-5 superstars on offense who're in their 3rd season & you must retain them for the next decade, you can't splurge money at big names like the Broncos & Patriots

Who said anything about "splurging money at big names"?

This whole thing started with people in this thread claiming that there was "no need to sign average NFL players", because after all we have some 3rd/4th round picks with little/no NFL experience that we apparently think will be able to do better based on little more than the fact that we drafted them and some draft profiles. Well, I'll take an "average" NFL Center any day over someone who hasn't played and for some reason wasn't able to get the nod over the disaster known as Satele a few months ago.

My whole point is that I just don't get where this idea that Holmes is suddenly a "better than average" NFL Center comes from, and if he isn't somehow better, then why wouldn't we want to sign one who is, when we could have at a very low and affordable price?

I find this whole blind faith thing quite bizarre.

  2. Signed two free agents last year (Cherilus was very good, Thomas looked good before the injury). We drafted two linemen last year, and it's worth giving them a shot to fill the gaps, otherwise why draft them? Thornton was inconsistent, but showed ability. Holmes is a huge question mark, but at some point we have to let him play, otherwise, again, why draft him?

I feel like Grigson did his o-line work last offseason, and it will hopefully pay off this season. Veteran depth is probably needed, but the hope is that Holmes and Thornton are the C and RG of the future. That's why we drafted them. It is scary to rely on them, particularly Holmes, but that's part of building a team.

We also drafted Justice Cunningham, Justin Anderson, Tim Fugger, John Boyett and Kernwynn Williams. We didn't trust them to be essiental parts of our line-up, so they're gone.

The point is that because we drafted someone, it doesn't mean that they're somehow entitled to a position in the line-up.

Lots of draft picks that every franchise make, never make it and don't get to get a shot to make it simply be being drafted. You draft them because you think, and hope, that they will turn out to be good NFL players. If it doesn't turn out that way, you cut your losses and go another direction.

Not signing someone who could be a usefull addition to your team, becuase you spent a 3rd/4th round draft pick on someone that plays the same position, is nothing short of madness. You sign the best players you can, regardless of how you spent your draft picks last year.

  3. I disagree with the bolded, very much. Getting rid of Satele and McGlynn is the very definition of addition by subtraction. We do have serious question marks, but we definitely don't look worse. Not even close.

I doubt that many Colts fans will be heartbroken over McGlynn or Satele leaving.

I do however have a difficult time seeing the whole "adition by subtraction" argument as valid. We have less NFL experience in our O-line right now, than we did last season. We haven't done anything to upgrade that line, despite everyone watching the NFL knowing that we needed to improve that line significantly. What we have, is a huge questionmark and players who have never played NFL football. Players that we apparently didn't think was better than the ones who played last season and we even have less depth now.

How that suddenly is an improvement is beyond me.

But signing an average NFL player, on a very cheap deal, is apparently not the way to go? That would suggest that the player(s) that we didn't play last season, is above average in the NFL. That to me, is a strange way of thinking. If that was the case why did we have to put up with Satele and McGlynn last year?

I like the signings we have done in FA. Our defense looks improved, and I see Nicks as a great addition to our offense. But the O-line was a mess last year, and if something is not done, it's going to be a mess next season as well, even if Donald Thomas should somehow stay healthy for an entire season. The worst part is, that it could have been dealt with, but apparently it hasn't been a priority.

  4. Wonder what the reason for Costas retirement really is.

Sure we'll get a replacement for him.

One thing I just don't get, is the notion that we'll be fine with Holmes at Center. Based on what? Blind faith in Grigsons ability to spot a solid NFL starter in the 4th round of the draft? We didn't really shine on O-line/Center last season, but still no sign of Holmes. At all. But now, he's ready to take on the big guys in the NFL? What has he been eating since last season, and where can I get some?

But apparently there's no need to take someone who's an "average NFL Center" - Well, I guess I wouldn't really mind having an average NFL Center starting for us, especially over a 4th rounder who was never actually played a game as a Center in the NFL.

You might even argue that "an average NFL Center", would be a pretty solid upgrade over what we have had lately.

If Holmes turns out to be a superstar Center, that's just great. I just don't buy it.

Everyone knows that if there is one thing this team really needs, it's to upgrade our O-line. So far, you would have to be blinded by your faith in Grigson to claim that we have fixed that. We actually look worse at O-line now, than what we did when the season ended, and that's actually both very impressive and very worrying.

The only possitive, is that Donald Thomas should be back.

Just to clarify, I don't blame Grigson for Costa leaving the game. I'm sure that he never saw that coming.

  5. It would be tempting to just go BPA, but looking at our current roster it wouldn't make much sense picking a DE (Clowney) or a WR like Watkins. Both are high-caliber talents for sure but we're pretty well covered at DE/WR.

    - Mack would be a sweet addition to our roster as would Barr.

    - Pryor or Clinton-Dix (whoever Pagano likes the most).

    - The top OTs (Matthews, Lewan, Robinson) would be interesting as well, but we're okay there as well.

    - Xavier Su'a-Filo could be a good addition for the O-line and could play as a G or T.

    - Justin Gilbert

  6. So would I, but the actual chance of us getting someone like Clinton-Dix for a sixth or seventh (no matter how many of them you stack together) is, well, "Ha-Ha", it ain't gonna happen.

Is he worth a first and third/fourth from next year to you? Something like that may be more of the asking price?

No, he's not worth that. I wasn't suggesting that we should construct a blockbuster deal in order to move up for him.

It was only a comment on so many people on here, concerned with the number of picks we have, when in the real world most late round picks don't ever contribute much on the field.

  7. If I remember correctly, we trade up to get T.Y. I don't really like the thought of trading up at the cost of next year. We should have another late round pick again next year (i hope!) and pickings are slim enough as it is. At some point trading into the following year is going to bite us. Hopefully we can grab a good safety without having to trade up. This draft is supposed to be deep that way.

Let's be honest here. It's very rare that the late round picks have any real value. Most of them are not even on the roster a year after the draft. Before you mention undrafted players and late round picks that have made it big in the NFL, I'm fully aware that this happens, but it's not the norm by any measure.

I could care less if we traded every future 6th and 7th pick we will ever have, if that could land us someone like Clinton-Dix

  8. The dunk.. I don't really see the need, but it won't really make much of a difference to me.

    PAT - Great.

Slurs - Hmm.. It's never okay. But what about all the other kind of slurs? Seems more about political correctness than anything else.

I think The Hoodie had a point with regards to all plays being subject to challenge. Seems like a strange rule that some refereeing errors, no matter how obvious, can't be challenged, while others can.

  9. In all honesty, I don't know squat about Brandon Coleman. However, I just don't understand why we would be going after a WR in the third round, when we have Nicks, T.Y., Reggie, Brazill, Rogers, Whalen and Lenz.

I have seen suggestions that the safeties most likely to be available when we pick in the second round, would be somewhat of a reach, unless someone falls, but I would imagine that we would be looking for a replacement for Bethea at least in the third round.
