  1. Intersting thread and thoughts. But also- remember, fans here complain that the Colts went 8-8 IN THE AFC SOUTH!

Let's just guess what our record would be if we played Pittsburgh, Baltimore, and Cincinnati twice every year (like Cleveland does) instead of Jax, Tennessee, and Houston?

IMO, our roster isn't nearly physical enough for those matchups, no matter who is coaching.

  2. We had two black and white tvs by the late sixties. All games were at 2pm. My sister watched NBC and the Jets downstairs, while I watched my Colts on CBS upstairs.

I still say that's why the Colts were allowed to move. After the 1970 merger, games except in Baltimore started at 1pm. Baltimore Blue Laws kept Sunday games at 2pm because tailgaters took all the church parking lots.  NFL grew tired of 1pm games, plus Baltimore's 2pm exception.

I still remember watching that game when I was around 16 years old. The TV was not getting great reception (could be there was fog at the game also) and that kick looked wide to me.  As I remember the announcers never questioned whether it was really good. Later on the news they started showing replays as to whether or not it was good. Pretty sure they extended the goal posts the following year.

And I thought I was old!

Thanks for sharing.  I was 11.

The only way is to compare the players against the competition they played. You can't compare measurables as no doubt today's athlete is far superior. But IMO It's still legit as everything is relevant to where a particular player ranked against his peers.

Then it's the Old Colts by a landslide every time, because they measured up and dominated against Jim Brown's Browns,  Lombardi's Packers, and the Giants that had Pat Summerall, Sam Huff, Frank Gifford, and Rosey Grier.  The modern ones lined up against the AFC South.

  5. Can't compare them.  Different eras.  I LOVE the old Baltimore ones much better,  but competition and rules were totally different. The old guys weren't protected like today's.  They were tougher, but nowhere nearly as athletic as today's.  They also had to have side jobs- the pay was horrific.  So was the nutrition and training.

It's like matching Shaq against Wilt.  Can't do it because the refereeing was different. And you'd have to include the fight after the game, too....

Yeah. The Kush years were awfully bad. In 1983 the colts had the first pick in the draft by virtue of the worst record in the NFL. We drafted John Elway with that pick. He and his father didn't want John playing for a Kush coached team. He threatened to play baseball if the Colts didn't trade him. The Colts worked out a trade with Denver and got Chris Hinton and Mark Herrmann from Denver. Bad times indeed.

And also got draft picks that became Ron Solt (all pro guard, career shortened by injury) and Rohn Stark (all pro punter).  Was Jimmy Irsay GM then?  I can't remember.

I watched all of the Frank kush, rod dowhower, ron meyer, rick venturi, lindy infante seasons.   All were worse than this staff.

This staff was better. This Defense has far better athletes.  But this D, at least for the first half  the year, has/had by far The worst Ability to tackle  in Colts history, and I've been a Colts fan since the mid 1950s.  These LBERS hit, and were in position but couldn't finish...

There'll be changes at LB for sure....

I still don't get why people are so butt hurt about the Jerry Hughes trade. He was not a good player for the Colts and he had virtually proved to be a bust for us. There was no indication he would change so he HAD to be moved.

I remember it different. He was a bust in his time in a 4-3. But in Chuck's first training camp, he flourished, and Mathis looked lost.

  9. Rick Wagner, RT for Baltimore. Wisconsin Badger Lineman,  big, young, and proven. PFF had him rated Top Available FA Tackle a while ago, I believe.

(Edit:  he'll be available. PFF now lists him as their biggest disappointment. Dropped him to 51st out of 60 Tackles for 2015.)

    Oooooops!
